Very good article. As a City Fan, this echoes my fear when knowing that El Mago was leaving. The ability to hold up play to create the space for strikers or attacking forwards like Sterling or Torres to score are just not happening. You could see it against Porto last night and in previous games that normally, we would eventually break a defense down through some magic. I think while not solely David Silva, he was integral to this style and without him, we have no one operating without the ball. This is fundamental in this style, as much as playing with the ball is. Yes, Aguero is a chance taker, and Sterling and Torres will do that eventually but for the smart passing and ability to draw a player and wait for the play to move around him, I think we'll always miss El Mago.
I think the big problem with City was the signing of Mahrez. He's a great footballer but is absolutely not the kind of winger that suits them. They need, fast, direct wingers who hug the line and stretch the play(Sane, Sterling). This creates more from for De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva etc in the middle. Mahrez is incredibly skilful but often cuts in and this creates a logjam with him and the other playmakers. He is also arguably too good not to play often.

Tifo that was a really good video, been a fan of your work for years as well as a fan of Manchester City, and I think one of the most overlooked reasons why the team is struggling too is the absence of Leroy Sané, he was the player David Silva looked for the most, and he helped stretch the pitch immensely, hope you can make a video of it one day, cheers for the good work!
Some of those illustrations are pretty good like Gundogan, Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva. Phil Foden however looks wrong and both De Bruyne and Guardiola look sunburned. The style is great but it might be worth going back to the drawing board on a few of those illustrations.
It will be the same like last season. We didn't replace Kompany and now we haven't replaced Silva. It's evident in the statistics. We haven't scored many goals this season. We're struggling to break down the opposition. Silva was a game changer. He could change the game with just one sharp pass/movement. We're lacking cohesion now.
i am a man utd fan but I'm a big fan of silva as well. heck i even bought a jersey with his name on it. but now its his time to move on to real sociedad. looking at what he is doing with his new club i am so proud of him
Not sure if they will ever find a like for like replacement but Pep knew what he was heading into when Silva left. Shouldn't it be his job to find a tactical adjustment to allow his team to still function effectively? Can't keep playing the same way if you have players who perform and function differently.
I think a big problem tacticaly is that at this point in his career Rodri is basically a luxury 6. Not good enough defensively to be an anchor on his own, not dynamic enough to play as a box to box 8. A bit like what United found out with Matic when they bought him as an anchor.
Seems like they’ve started to put it all together lately and look like they could be a bigger champions league threat. Depending on their center forward play though with aguero having lots of injuries and Jesus with some inconsistencies
I think a bigger issue than this is guardiolas obsession with playing rodri and refusing to bench him for fernandinho. He does this at every club he's been were he takes one of his most important veteran players from the season before and arbitrarily decides they're not in his plans anymore
@@nikolas8203 yet he had the legs to play cb every single game last season. Actual people don't lose physical abilities as rapidly as in FIFA. He also doesn't have to play 90 minutes and can even partner Rodri in a double pivot
Finally someone giving the credit he deserves. He got so much flack last year it was absurd. People were blaming him as the reason the team weren't successful. His loss isn't the only issue. But he was masking the lack of width. Without Silva the lack of width had been exacerbated.
Thank the heavens that this format is back!! Who else prefers graphics and the voiceover rather than watching someone's face talking throughout the video?
I love how Fbref and Statsbomb are providing access to granular statistics to a regular fan as well as folks who want to build analyses off it. Hearty thanks to both orgs!
Jack Grealish would be a perfect replacement for David Silva. He draws a lot of defenders towards him and has the ability to play those sharp precision passes into the final third while having good control in possession.
Dont know about that, they clearly mentioned that city need a high volume passer in the final third. Dont see Grealish being that sort of profile, he's exactly like Foden
They did not miss him neither sergio aguero nor vincent kompany nor kdb while he was injured its astonishing how consistent city are even though they are in a transitional phase with new players such as phoden torres dias cancelo zinchenko rodri joining in and filling in bigger boots so smoothly, guardiola has some magic. The start of the season was just a blip in form they are back to cruzing again.
Here’s an interesting thought, this is the shape and personnel Guardiola has been selecting for big games at city in the past, he would take off Silva for Gundogan and use him as double pivot next to Fernandinho or box to box, often times results blowing up in his face, no one noticed it was a foreshadowing of things to come this year. So I been trying to think of young players that have similar style to David Silva and I am drawing a blank, names that keep coming to mind Gotze, Ozil, Sneijder, Fabregas, Nasri, Modric, pure guesses would be Nabil Fekir and Odegaard that maybe could be similar type players
Foden has kinda shown attributes of La Pausa. I think they should give him a go at that. At the very least if he were the LW in the 4-3-3 I think that City would be on much better form.
Well he is not wrong City had to adapt cause if Silva absent Even now Kevin is playing that free roam role because no one yet has filled Silva shoes, City doesn't play 4-3-3 anymore. We been mostly playing 4-2-3-1, Again City is doing well without him, just saying he absent made City change their formation
Also I dont really like those two thesedays lol. I still prefer our old players back in 2008-13. Pogba is exceptional but not consistent Lingard however? Lol
@@timothyclegane6979 Nothing more iconic than those two dabbing to each other, lol, but yeah, Pogba definitely could improve. He'd been a decent leader to the french national team back in the day
Wow. The difference is clear to the naked eye, but the analysis here clarifies just how stark that difference is. With hindsight this also makes Liverpool’s capture of Thiago even more impressive; with his abilities, pedigree, prior relationship with Guardiola and availability this summer, it’s hard not to think he would have solved all of these problems single-handedly. Keeping him from improving a direct rival by bringing him in themselves is another Liverpool transfer masterstroke.
Fair point, mate. I wonder, though: Thiago has range. He creates from the middle. There are few as good as him. I doubt whether he would've been a fit in Silva's role, because for that, Thiago would have to play near the box. I don't think that is his natural position. If bought, he would've mitigated some creation problems. Most importantly, reduced De Bruyne's burden of recycling and creating. But I doubt whether he would've solved City's current crisis.
I'd say the bigger problem is the decline of Fernandinho. He single handedly took care of City's defensive shielding. It's been the same for United, the decline of Matic means they must play a double pivot, leaving one less attacker.
Really quite hard for City's side, Silva is one of a kind midfielder with a strong ball possession and good running with the ball, while KDB it's just long range passer he's not that good with ball possession and running with the ball. KDB needs a space when passing while Silva even in a very tight space he can pass to another teammates
Last 2 season : Vinnie and our deffense looks so bad Last season : David Silva and our attacking and creativity looks really missing him This season : Fernadinho which is he is tanker and solid DMF Next season maybe Sergio Aguero The End of 2012 era😓
Good video but slightly misleading presentation, since it's just as much about Fernandinho's decline, with neither Rodri nor Gundogan up to doing what he did as a single pivot. Bernardo/Foden seems more promising to me longterm in place of David Silva than Rodri for Fernandinho.
Relying on KDB all the time means that opposition teams can just close him down. And pep doesn't always play Foden whos confidence makes him consistent
Its something to cry about. El Mago is deeply missed. The squad doesn’t look well placed on the pitch no more; too dependent on individual breakthroughs and not a team system
Clubs and pundits take the age factor and run with it way too much. If he’s shitting the bed but quick “oh he has promise he’s a young lad give him time” if he is 33+ clubs won’t renew, pundits say it’s time for mls and forget just how stellar that player still is.
So what you’re really saying is that the difference in Manchester City is because of the double pivot and actually Fernandinho made that possible, not Silva? I get the point of the video but I’m a little confused
This is a great analysis especially after watching the Manchester Derby yesterday with them starting Rodri and Fernandinho in midfield yesterday. You can see they are way off the level they were a couple.of seasons ago
finally someone that gets why they are struggling to score.. everyone kept crying for aguero and jesus.. when in reality its good old David that they miss..Barnardo did well to replicate KDB in their second title win and he can be versatile, same season guandogun replicated Fernandinho.. but it will take them a long time to understand the David role, ..foden cant do it ...and both w will have to grow into it slowly as the season goes on
This is why I was surprised many, if not most, considered City to be PL and even CL favourites. Contenders for sure, but you can't ignore that they lost Silva & Sane, haven't truly replaced Kompany, and both Aguero + Fernandinho are older and no longer in their prime. Teams have also figured out that if you can get the first goal and then sit back vs City, they'll eventually run out of ideas and resort to KdB crossing it for 5'9 Jesus and hoping it works
Bernardo Silva should play that position or at least try to play a similar role because he's a central midfielder originally and City has other good wingers. I would play him there and give him some time so he can grow in the position and also because I think one way or another he will finish his career playing in the middle when his speed starts to go down a bit... I'm a Benfica fan and used to see him playing in the middle in our B team... Obviously it was a complete different level of competition but he had about 18 years and playing against experienced players from the portuguese second division. I always think I would enjoy Bernardo's football more if he played in the middle more often but obviously we can't expect anyone to be a copy of David Silva who by the way also played as a winger often when he was younger.

Me watching after man city lift the trophy for the season 👀
He was their _Silva_ lining!
But City have had their 2 strikers injured for the majority of the 20/21 season, that probably affected their style and ways of attacking too.
i am a man utd fan but I'm a big fan of silva as well. heck i even bought a jersey with his name on it. but now its his time to move on to real sociedad. looking at what he is doing with his new club i am so proud of him
Not sure if they will ever find a like for like replacement but Pep knew what he was heading into when Silva left. Shouldn't it be his job to find a tactical adjustment to allow his team to still function effectively? Can't keep playing the same way if you have players who perform and function differently.
City's problem is lack of clinical finishing. An example, last night champions league game against porto
Miss u El Mago 💙
I think a big problem tacticaly is that at this point in his career Rodri is basically a luxury 6. Not good enough defensively to be an anchor on his own, not dynamic enough to play as a box to box 8. A bit like what United found out with Matic when they bought him as an anchor.
Seems like they’ve started to put it all together lately and look like they could be a bigger champions league threat. Depending on their center forward play though with aguero having lots of injuries and Jesus with some inconsistencies
hi, my name is max and I am a real sociedad fan. I just wanted to say thank you ❤️😃
3 months later, they won 20 match in a row without breaking a sweat 😂
was waiting for this video for so long.
without David we r lacking in the midfield
I think its terrifying to think where they would be without de bruyne
We can and hv won without him we still hv al lot creativity in our midfield
Incredible video. Absolutely hit the nail on the head.
Your Pep really Loooks like Arteta in your graphic at 4:15
here i also think you have to give thought for the difficulty of not having our first striker in the side consistantly this season
Would really love an in depth look into Real Sociedad next video !
2020 is so unpredictable, old players proving their former clubs wrong
of course it's bad he's like xavi or iniesta on barca club so without him @mancity doesn't have a jenderal midfielder
i wanna see a kante video....his style is one that can be appreciated well by managers ....or hated
I think a bigger issue than this is guardiolas obsession with playing rodri and refusing to bench him for fernandinho. He does this at every club he's been were he takes one of his most important veteran players from the season before and arbitrarily decides they're not in his plans anymore
He is 36 and doesn't have the legs to play every game. Also,he has been injured for quite some time this season, which is why he hasn't played much.
@@nikolas8203 yet he had the legs to play cb every single game last season. Actual people don't lose physical abilities as rapidly as in FIFA. He also doesn't have to play 90 minutes and can even partner Rodri in a double pivot
@@DanielMartinez-bk8fd He has been injured for some time this season
I think bernardo has potential to be a david sub. But coming from a wing its difficult to operate has a midfielder
Love that new font ! Great choice.
Maybe next year if city buys messi he could team with de bruyne in the creative side and playmaking and then city will be unstoppable
Serious question; could the triangle system used in basketball be used in football with the same effectiveness?
They did not miss him neither sergio aguero nor vincent kompany nor kdb while he was injured its astonishing how consistent city are even though they are in a transitional phase with new players such as phoden torres dias cancelo zinchenko rodri joining in and filling in bigger boots so smoothly, guardiola has some magic.
The start of the season was just a blip in form they are back to cruzing again.
Why did you put an ad for a promo from Black Friday to Cyber Monday when it's not any more
may be the video was made before black friday
De Bruyne was a great 10 at Wolfsburg, where he made a big name. Pep needs to drop the 4-3-3 and adopt the 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-1-2/3-1-4-2
Here’s an interesting thought, this is the shape and personnel Guardiola has been selecting for big games at city in the past, he would take off Silva for Gundogan and use him as double pivot next to Fernandinho or box to box, often times results blowing up in his face, no one noticed it was a foreshadowing of things to come this year.
When your video ages like shit, it is better to remove it to prevent any discomfort. That's the professional spirit anyone should have.
Well he is not wrong
City had to adapt cause if Silva absent
Even now Kevin is playing that free roam role because no one yet has filled Silva shoes, City doesn't play 4-3-3 anymore.
We been mostly playing 4-2-3-1, Again City is doing well without him, just saying he absent made City change their formation
Excellent piece. I was wondering how City became so overly reliant on De Bruyne in the last two years. I guess now we have the answer
2:38 foden’s face when 2 Icelandic girls said they wanted to “meet up”
Great piece!
As Man Utd fan I want to say that David Silva and KDB are the only city players I like
Thanks, we also proudly claim Pogba and Lingard as our all time favourite United players
He'd been a decent leader to the french national team back in the day
Pogba should leave or improve. I haven't seen the best of him in years
As a Liverpool fan they are missing kompany the most a real leader on and off the pitch.
KDB needs a space when passing while Silva even in a very tight space he can pass to another teammates
should have posted this before the burnley game
Quality content as always
Good vid
Last 2 season : Vinnie and our deffense looks so bad
Last season : David Silva and our attacking and creativity looks really missing him
This season : Fernadinho which is he is tanker and solid DMF
Next season maybe Sergio Aguero
The End of 2012 era😓
David Silva is the football Chris Paul
Good video but slightly misleading presentation, since it's just as much about Fernandinho's decline, with neither Rodri nor Gundogan up to doing what he did as a single pivot. Bernardo/Foden seems more promising to me longterm in place of David Silva than Rodri for Fernandinho.
Ha lol, watching them right now as top of the league with 6 points clear of Man U.
Relying on KDB all the time means that opposition teams can just close him down. And pep doesn't always play Foden whos confidence makes him consistent
the drawings are top notch, guys. best in the channel's history, no doubt.
Its something to cry about. El Mago is deeply missed. The squad doesn’t look well placed on the pitch no more; too dependent on individual breakthroughs and not a team system
This format is best
Clubs and pundits take the age factor and run with it way too much. If he’s shitting the bed but quick “oh he has promise he’s a young lad give him time” if he is 33+ clubs won’t renew, pundits say it’s time for mls and forget just how stellar that player still is.
So what you’re really saying is that the difference in Manchester City is because of the double pivot and actually Fernandinho made that possible, not Silva? I get the point of the video but I’m a little confused
My fav player of all time ❤❤
Poor KDB doesn't have anyone to talk to anymore.
Best channel on football,straight up.
Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, de Bruyne, are Pep's man who can't easily be replaced.
This is a great analysis especially after watching the Manchester Derby yesterday with them starting Rodri and Fernandinho in midfield yesterday. You can see they are way off the level they were a couple.of seasons ago
DO A VIDEO TALKING ABOUT MSN
finally someone that gets why they are struggling to score.. everyone kept crying for aguero and jesus.. when in reality its good old David that they miss..Barnardo did well to replicate KDB in their second title win and he can be versatile, same season guandogun replicated Fernandinho.. but it will take them a long time to understand the David role, ..foden cant do it ...and both w will have to grow into it slowly as the season goes on
Things took a turn once we lost Kompany. With Silva gone it’s only been downhill. Agüero’s next and I’m imagining the worst...
Ekse Mzansi 🇿🇦 le monate?
I really thought I was the only one seeing this. Him an Kompany
City needs to learn Bayern’s succession plan. They seemingly have no plan for Silva just like they didn’t with Kompany. As things are going Aguero might not have a replacement either.
But They have 💷💷💷💲💲💲.
@@christianopulinaldo8319 Money can't buy leadership and Winning Mentality, your logic to the subject is so terrible, Milan Got ibra for free and look what is happening to them, top at the league and above all that the oldest man in the team scores alot.
@@rpg5265 you may be right👍👍
Bayerns succession plan is to buy the best players from the other bundesliga teams making them weaker is that what you city to do😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bayern's succession plan is raiding every german club that over-performs.
Not to mention players at bayern can under perform for multiple seasons and it still doesn't make a difference.
I can't tell if Alex is the kind of guy that listens to Ravel's Bolero, or cannibal corpse.
