    David Silva is widely regarded as one of the best players to play for Manchester City. So naturally, they miss him now he plays for Real Sociedad. But just how much do they miss him?
    Has his absence forced Man City to play a different way?
    Are City’s other midfielders able to replicate what Silva brought to the team?
    What are Man City now lacking without Silva?
    Alex Stewart explains.

    • @Re-dj5mf
      @Re-dj5mf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@cowsaysboo Maybe the problem is, he can't do that
      1. Depending on Fernandinho again at his age is never good for the club's future, you want to have his successor or change your tactic based on the player you have and their capabilities
      2. You don't want to risk losing points by experimenting on a single pivot when your defense in this season and last season is/was inconsistent, underperforming, and your new starting CB is still adjusting to the league
      3. A lot of people maybe don't realize this because ManCity still have a lot of depth and quality players, but they are in a stage of huge rebuilding, it's almost like Pep's first season at the club again, the main difference is that the key players who have settled with the league and the club aren't playing as regulars anymore cause aging or leaving already, so Pep have to adapt his tactics all over again, and it's hard to rebuild when you're also expected to compete for the top again, maybe that's why he hasn't settled with any main formation and seems to persist with the double pivot so as not to lose any point while building chemistry and let the new generation of players settle
      Wow, sorry that was long

    I think the big problem with City was the signing of Mahrez. He's a great footballer but is absolutely not the kind of winger that suits them. They need, fast, direct wingers who hug the line and stretch the play(Sane, Sterling). This creates more from for De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva etc in the middle. Mahrez is incredibly skilful but often cuts in and this creates a logjam with him and the other playmakers. He is also arguably too good not to play often.

    • @F-Tier_Physique
      @F-Tier_Physique 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You dont think the lack of a true DM is a bigger problem? Also the lack of any kind of physicality, Crossing vs lowblock teams could work if Balotelli, Dzeko or Tevez was in the box, but not many aerial threaths rn. but more on the Dm problem: you now have to play with a single offensive midfielder instead of two, which is especially problematic when Silva was there who is arguably more dangerous in that space when isolated the kdb. If one of the Dms were more yay esque and carried a large attacking threat coming from deep it could be different, but gundo and rodri just dont have the same threat.

    • @jackkarran8050
      @jackkarran8050 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@F-Tier_Physique dm is also an issue. The fast wingers on the last line would push the opponents back so Man City wouldn’t have as great a need to have a double pivot.

      @eddyededwin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@F-Tier_Physique dm is only an issue on the counter but city have pretty much remedied it with having a more reliable centerback pairing. but the biggest problem atm is their attacking form, they cant break teams down as they are playing too narrow with inverted wingers and attacking midfielders that cant control the game as well after losing silva. this also makes then more vulnerable to counters in the first plce

    • @ianmendham6671

      F-tier Physique i don’t buy that. Liverpool won the league by crossing and they’ve hardly got any height or amazing physicality in attack or midfield. Also, Yaya was not a DM since Fernandinho/Fernando occupied that position and they are not expected to have attacking input.

    Now I really question Guardiola's ability to replace 'old guard' at Man City. There are 5 years almost since he is in charge and I doubt he will be able to finally replace Kompany, Fernandinho, Silva and Aguero. He only managed to replace Yaya Toure's role with Kevin De Bruyne, but he was already at the club when Guardiola came. Wow. The difference is clear to the naked eye, but the analysis here clarifies just how stark that difference is. With hindsight this also makes Liverpool’s capture of Thiago even more impressive; with his abilities, pedigree, prior relationship with Guardiola and availability this summer, it’s hard not to think he would have solved all of these problems single-handedly. Keeping him from improving a direct rival by bringing him in themselves is another Liverpool transfer masterstroke.

    • @kartikiyer1019
      @kartikiyer1019 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair point, mate. I wonder, though: Thiago has range. He creates from the middle. There are few as good as him. I doubt whether he would've been a fit in Silva's role, because for that, Thiago would have to play near the box. I don't think that is his natural position. If bought, he would've mitigated some creation problems. Most importantly, reduced De Bruyne's burden of recycling and creating. But I doubt whether he would've solved City's current crisis.

    The lack of athleticism in the 6 of Rodri compared to Fernandinho is the reason the 4-3-3 cannot be employed effectively anymore, not the loss of David Silva. Surely this should be the focus of your video and not just be mentioned in passing? David Silva’s loss of mobility due to age hindered City when he played in high intensity games last season in the 4-3-3 system.

    Really enjoying the content as usual. But I have to disagree with the idea that Foden is too dynamic to play the role David Silva used to play. He has all the attributes required to play the 'la pausa' role, especially under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola. He can press, receive the ball under pressure and can develop a metronomic passing game. He is not on Silva's level yet but everything about his youth career says he can get somewhere close. The biggest problem is Rodri. He doesn't have the mobility to play as a single pivot and the club have failed to find the 'next fernandinho' or someone who can play that role effectively. Whoever was responsible for buying Rodri simply made a mistake. They need to admit that mistake, fork out for a DM, let Foden develop in the Silva role, and revert back to the ultra successful 4-3-3.

    This is why I was surprised many, if not most, considered City to be PL and even CL favourites. Contenders for sure, but you can't ignore that they lost Silva & Sane, haven't truly replaced Kompany, and both Aguero + Fernandinho are older and no longer in their prime. Teams have also figured out that if you can get the first goal and then sit back vs City, they'll eventually run out of ideas and resort to KdB crossing it for 5'9 Jesus and hoping it works
