I have my cue points color coded, so for instance, Red= 4beat, yellow=8, blue=16 and so on.. this has helped me tremedously, so ill know that section of the song, is X amount of beats, so ill know if i need to loop it, or hit the cue point a second or 3rd time.. I saw this tip from someone elses video, and has helped me big time..
hope that will help other DJ's out there... "Need life to a Party, MUSIC is the KEY"

Like a few on here I set cues and color code them by bars, drops, builds, breaks and outros. But this method takes it to another level! It really encourages you to do live mixes instead of start to end mixing. Thanks Jamie! Going to apply to my tracks.

I set up my hot cues quite similar.
I always set one in the first beat of the track (green) then one when the bassline comes in (yellow) one in the first break (blue) another one in the drop (red) and finally one as an emergency hot cue in case I'm running out of time and the transition ain't over yet.
Apart from that in RB I create smart and useful loops containing just vocals, a nice percussion or a good synth. This way you can play a lot more with your tracks, create powerful mashups, interesting phrases or simply mix smoothly between tracks.

  • @LuisAlejandroSazaM
    @LuisAlejandroSazaM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I usually set 2 loop cues in order to mix in - mix out, also i've a hot cue on the first break and first drop and the other oner are usually loops from vocals and the outro section, so far its' been quite useful for me

  • @EricBishard

Very interesting to see how other DJs use hot cues. I think we have a similar technique, I reserve hot cues specifically for parts I want to chop and play around with just as you have shown, and reserve cue points for all the major parts that I might want to skip to (intro, first beat, break, breakdown, buildup, drop, third beat, fourth beat, wind down, outro) so cue points for me are the downbeat of the familiar sections found throughout all tracks, it's structure and my hot cues for creative chopping and stabs, etc. I like the term "Performance Hot Cues" this is the only thing I use my hot cues for where as I said regular cue points may be at the same place as a hot cue sometimes, but those are not meant for jumping to on the fly in a live performance they are only used for navigation.
Absolutely love this and if I could recommend any video out there for this technique specifically I think your video is one of the better ones. Nice job!

  • @jordyvero6725

very nice tutorials. I used to play vinyls and really mixed old school but then I bought a startup model Pioneer ddj controller and had the opportunity to make songs shorter and put some effects on them but basically sticked to the old ways apart from that. But the way the potetial for completely remixing with some special techniques like that last one really opens a whole new experience for a dj doensn't it. All I'm saying is I'm going to make a mix this afternoon for a contest and I'm going to apply it for sure!

  • @ThomStanton

Love this technique. I've been loosely using left to right for song phrases with vocal bits far right for play over transitions. It's been confusing as I didn't have a good relationship of what top-bottom in the left-right clusters represented. I'm gonna switch over to your technique. Bit of a studious noob so I have a bunch of clean up of old cues. Oh well, sometimes tidying up old work offers strong reinforcement for finding a great technique and sticking to it. 🙏 Thanks -- as always -- for your tips. Time for this custodian to clean up hot cue debris on Aisle EDM! 😁

The performance side of your video is interesting, it makes viewers want to be more creative while they play, which is a good thing, so shout out to you for that.
Having said that, I think the way you start explaining where you place your first cue points is a bit confusing and intricate in my opinion. Fair enough, you did say that your way wasn't the only way. However, for beginners out there watching your video, I think you should start off by saying that the most important cue points should be at the beginning of the intro and the choruses which should be used for traditional mixing. After you've got that out of the way, you can start taking it a step further and start talking about more creative mixing like you did! Sorry if that looked patronizing, just wanted to give you a pedagogical tip. Keep up the good work though, your videos are usually very interesting. Big up!

Hi, thank you for this eye opener. So that's how you do it ;)
Uptil now I have always used 8 pads for phrasing, and also adjust the phrases in rekordbox which is a tedious job, since the standard autophrasing is so badly detected. But there are two sections of 8 pads which you can toggle, I'm looking for the right knob on my ddj rzx controller to switch between them.... or maybe I have to change the mapping a bit.

Nice vid! Do you guys think the 4 buttons of the top row of the hot cues are enough to label the whole song? I would label 1st break, 1st drop, 1 buildup and the outro beat section. Do you think this is enough or is it important to label both drops, since some tracks have different drops, or the 2nd break?

Hi Jamie, quick question. Some Djs set the cues a few bars before a section to know when to mix in/out. In your example you set the cue points at the onset of the section. What is the advantage of each? I guess markers could be used for drop locations. I’m trying see which way would be best.
    Great videos, thank you!

Hi ! I have been watching your videos on Djing for a couple of years.I am from India.
I use Pioneer's DDJ 1000 controller which comes with Rekordbox software. I usually play Bollywood remixes which are largely vocals with edm type beats. How I set my hot cues is....I put the 1st hot cue (coloured as blue) on the 1st beat of the song, then I put the 2nd hot cue (coloured as pink) where the chorus of the vocal begins. Followed by 3rd hot cue (coloured as blue) where the bridge section of the song begins, then the 4th hot cue (coloured as pink) where the verse of vocal begins…so on and so forth. The color instantly makes me know the content of the hot-cued parts of the song. For instance...blue for me stands for the beats...whereas pink for me is for vocals. Do let me know...how can I further improve setting up my hot cues.
