  • The Pennine Way was the first National Trail in England and is one of the UK’s most famous long-distance walks. Opened on 24th April 1965, it paved the way for public access to some of England’s wildest landscapes.
With a combined ascent that exceeds the height of Mount Everest, the Pennine Way is arguably the most challenging National Trail in England and is not for everyone. I personally found it to be mentally as well as physically challenging due to the length of time walking, as well as the remoteness of sections on the walk.

Congratulations and well done on completing the Pennine Way, a fantastic achievement. I really enjoyed the way you captured the walk and very impressed that you continued to film when the weather was rubbish and no doubt those times when you were knackered and just wanted to sink into your sleeping bag. Your pronunciation of place names did make me smile at times - it's Bellin-jum - but that just added to my enjoyment. I see the Coast to Coast didn't quite go plan - hope you weren't too disappointed as regardless it was still an outstanding effort. Thanks again.

Thanks Martin 😃 yeah those place names had me tongue tied a lot - and my terrible memory to go with it hahaha, oh well. I didn't feel disappointed to finish weirdly. It was a little difficult to admit to myself that my body had probably reached it's limit though. In a way I'm happy I know what the limit currently is, so that I can work to increase it!

Really loved your PW videos. Congrats. It brought back lots of memories. Now I have time to watch your Offas Dyke trip before you start the C2C. Thanks.

Congratulations on completing the hike! You've posted some really interesting videos that captured the feel of the walk, its challenges as well as its beauty - thank you.
I have done the PW twice: the first time south to north in weekend sections and it's fair to say I hadn't really DONE it properly. So, the next year, my brother and I hiked it in 15 days (rest day in Dufton) from north to south. Hoping to do it again in the next couple of years but age is catching up with me.

Thanks Russell. Gosh, 15 days seems like a quick pace to me - even after improving my fitness with this summer's hikes. Maybe it's something I can aspire to another year. Would you begin in the North or South when you do it again? Just curious...

@@mybigfreelife Looking back on the 15-day hike, yes....it was a good effort, we were pleased with ourselves. We found the first 3 days from KY really tough but, on day 4, I realised that I would definitely finish it: I woke up that day and my legs felt good, rather than aching like bastards from the day before. We wild camped most evenings with the occasional treat of a hostel or B&B, we were packing light and made use of the daylight hours by starting early each day.
If I were to attempt it again it would be south to north. Probably aim for 18 days or so (I'm in my 60s now) and I'd use B&Bs and hostels as much as possible: still not sure of doing Byrness to KY in one leg, though.
Good luck with the C2C! The walk out of KS up to the Nine Standards was tough (for me) and the second half of the walk from Keld is really beautiful with a lot of variety from day to day.

Huge congratulations and well done on completing the Pennine Way, I hope you enjoyed the walk and thank you for videoing it as I have really enjoyed watching every installment you put on, did you see the wild mountain goat's when you walked over the Cheviots,? I will look forward to you Coast to Coast walk video when you put them on, what day are you planning to start the Coast to Coast walk as I live near St Bees and it would be nice to catch up with you if you would like to and maybe walk a bit of the first day with you, once again Huge congratulations.

Much appreciated Howard. Sadly I missed the goats as I neglected to read the guide book for that part, so was unaware that I needed to look out for them. That'll teach me! Sorry I missed you at St Bees.

I think you know you have to get your food situation sorted, carrying excess weight truly saps at your body's capabilities but more importantly at your mental strength.
I think that on long walks it is important to swap out what you like with what you can suffer. I carry loads of noodles, cup a soups and cous cous. They can be mixed together at random and eaten hot or cold soaked. They're not the most tasty choices but they are light per calorie. (other less boring choices are available, if you use calories per gram as the measure.) I eat good stuff as I pass shops, pubs, Cafés etc. Due to my age I never pass a loo anyway so when walking it's easy to add never pass a hot food opportunity to that rule.

Hi jimmys60ny, yes it's true that the excess weight saps your energy. I find it hard to compromise on good food, but it's a necessary evil on longer hikes, isn't it? I feel that it's something I will get better at with time.
