I'm fixing to upgrade my dads 5" screen (in his 2023 Ram 1500) to the 8.4 UC5. Got the radio/module, 8.4 trim bezel and harnesses needed - all in for under 700$. Can't beat that.
Did this to my 2017 tradesman 2500 Cummins. It only cost $800’and sold my old one for $300 so net cost was only $500. Also, the upgraded cluster is only $400 and mileage can be programmed with alpha obd. There are much cheaper ways than infotainment is what I’m saying, if your ok with a bit more complexity and don’t need new.
Its always cool to see these rams. I designed that cluster lol.. I havent saw the base model 2500. Now I wish I made those pillars with some texture. It was meant to be supporting the RAM logo bar like a farm ranch gate name plate. Also FCA cheaped out too much here. I wish we spent little more money to at least have some color on that RAM logo in the middle.
The mobile 2-way radio addition can be quite valuable. Looks like a Midland MTX-400 GMRS 40-watt mobile radio (license required!) Is there enough interest to your viewers to have him explain how he installed it for others interested in adding comms to their trucks?
I did that same upgrade on my 1500. I wanted Android Auto and you can't do that with the 5.4in Uconnect. Bought it from the guys at Infotainment as well - great group to work with.
If I knew what I knew now I’d have gone for the higher trim level to begin with. The $160/mo difference seems much more manageable than $2k here and there approach. Plus getting it from the dealer has valuation in the sense the trucks worth is bonafide versus upgrades being dismissed when added after-the-fact to some extent.
Shade tree mechanic project under the shade tree. AC looks like it also changed to separate temperature zones. Glad the snags were not major issues. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.
I like how much more flush mounted that appears to be compared to the one in my 2019 tradesman, it’s set up more like my moms 2020 grand Cherokee. Looks awesome!
This is a nice upgrade. It amazes me how they sell these huge 18" (or whatever it is) that has the same functionality they just deleted the physical knobs to the ac/heater.
I have been waiting for someone to do this with the new Ford, I have a 2020 super duty that I want to install the 2022 infotainment system in and I don't care what the cost is. If you have any info about that I would love it.
Recommend NOT attempting this if it's "cold" (air temp). Cold Plastic is BRITTLE plastic! I've done this before and seems like 70F plus air temp "softens" the plastic so it has less chance of breaking, especially on tabs and hooks...
Oh man this is great timing I've been wondering how to do this and watch the few other videos. I want to do this on my 2014 and wondering about the backup camera as well. There's a way to upgrade that to a HD version. Time to start watching the video!
Hi, Ray. You and I have the same gen truck, so the process is a bit more involved. If you have the 5" radio, you'll have to upgrade the the blower motor resistor and control unit. Infotainment has a whole kit dedicated to this process along with a video on the alerted procedure. I also installed a backup camera and had quite the saga getting that to work with the larger radio, but in the end, uncovered a few tricks to get everything working. Feel free to DM me on Instagram if you run into any issues.
check out boosted motorsports channel he did the upgrade on 3 of his trucks while doing hellcqt motor swaps and he shows you how to save a lil bit of money and be able to upgrade instrument cluster, U-Connect and upgraded all the speakers too
If you have plenty of time, disposable income and don’t care about not getting all of the functionality that comes with the upgrade then go ahead and do the upgrade. Everybody has different tastes and priorities. Nice looking upgrade.
With the chip shortage, more videos like this to add the options back! I’d love to add the surround cameras on my truck, rear view mirror-cam, blind spot monitoring, etc.
$1500 for LT tiers $1200 for brush guard (BG paid for itself when the truck in front of me picked up a 8' retread off a semi and landed on my front end at 80 mpr, no damage)😁 $800 for Rino bed spray in liner $300 for extended mirrors $500 for airbags $500 for airbag pump $1,500 for fifth wheel hitch $1500 for a hard tunnel cover most of this I put on myself, for a total of $5,000 and that's for a 2004 2500 4wd Dodge (115,000 miles) don't take long to get a lot of money tied up in accessories. Base price of 15K when I bought the truck which include new ball joints and trailer brake brake. It all adds up quick but it's worth every penny I love my truck and it pulls my fifth wheel Reflections 9,800 GVW like it's made to be pulled. Life is good!!!
Interesting. The dealer told me the 8.4 system would be $2000 back in 2018. They also said that compared to the power train, the electronics are far less reliable, with the power train accounting for 1% of claims. I have some expertise in the IT sector and the software upgrades to the system are … difficult. I say that having installed operating system software on thousands of networked UNIX & Windows systems.
I have done this twice, once on my 2014 and 2ndly on my 2018. 2018 was way more intense but I used a TH-cam video to follow and it worked flawlessly. If he paid $2600, he was RIPPED off, I paid just over 1K for the 8.4 with NAV in mid 2018 from Infotainment
that is what I really like about a Ram they are pre wired so you add every thing a Limited has to a Express --- all you need is money to buy the upgrades LOL
Hi all. Great Video. I have a 2020 Tradesman Dually for the Cyclone, I have the 5” 1990 radio as well, couple questions- Where was this kit sourced from and does it have wireless Apple Car Play? Thanks guys nicely done.
Could you link the other videos of upgrades done to this truck if you assisted? It is a consideration for someone looking to purchase a Ram that can later be upgraded such as this truck.
It makes me so mad that this is my only option for replacing that piece of garbage 5 inch screen. Still cheaper than buying a new truck. Any hidden quirks that have been discovered since the install?
8.4” touch screen update. Great video sir. Thank you for sharing. Question.. do you have a link for the unit? I have a 2021 tradesman that I want to upgrade.. pls lmk
So the truck didn't come with automatic climate control or dual zone air conditioning. The new bezel has knobs and buttons for those controls so do those work? It appeared they did not but curious. I believe on the factory options the 8.4 is paired with the dual/auto climate option.
I have the 8.4 in my truck. Only thing I don’t have is the nav. All I wanted was the CarPlay when I get the truck since I don’t use the factory nav in anything. I’m sure the nav adds a lot to the unit compared to a non nav unit.
Question, did this change also switch the HVAC to a duel zone? Looked as if the controls between the 2 units were different. Just wanted to know if this upgrade would also change this as well. Thanks for the video.
You'll need a retrofit harness to have auto climate. True dual zone requires pulling the whole dash and modifying the blower to be dual blower... the 100 dollar adapter is your best option
I bought a security bypass cable that has 2 connectors that connect to the canbus hubs under the dash and then a male and female obd2 that goes inline with the factory connector. Takes less than 5 minutes to install and no pulling the dash apart. Then using alfaobd I made several changes to the truck including calibrating the speedo, fog lights on with high beams, and current gear on the drivers display.
you should check out boosted motorsports channel he has the hellkota a hellcat interior & drivetrain swapped into his dakota and now he is currently building his ram 1500 hellcat edition where he did the u-connect swap like your doing here after he did also on his Eco-Diesel Ram and he shows where he gets everything from the harnesses to the displays todo the swap including the drivers instrument dash display on all 3 trucks
Really like the look of this infotainment, do you have a link to this one by any chance? I didn’t get that from the video, might be my mistake of course
So, I saw that the truck didn’t originally have the “auto” climate and the upgrade did. Does the auto work now? Did you have to do anything else to make it work?
Sorry to bother you have the part # I can find on mopar I wanna upgrade mine from my truck plz if u have it can u send it tome if you don’t mind thank you sir
I ordered a 8.4 kit from infotainment and got it installed on my 2016 ram 2500 tradesmen and my factory back up camera wouldn’t activate when in reverse gear , customer service couldn’t fix my issue. This was for a g56 transmission (manual)
What are the chances of this 😅? I just completed filming the same upgrade on my Ram but, as you know, mine will be in the editing backlog for some time. Awesome upgrade (and tutorial video), I can personally confirm that coming from the 5" to the 8.4" on this side too. He'll be happy with this!
i thought about changing out the radio on my grandfather's 99 gmc but the audio shop guy told me it wasnt worth it. i was trying to get apple car play so i dont have to hold on my phone in one hand and drive with the other hand
Where did you get the aftermarket unit mine is a 2013 multiple issues with the head unit not loading then I can't control any radio not working no backup cameras can't control ac would like to know where to get a replacement without being robbed by My dealer
Hello I wanted to upgrade my 2018 ram 1500, from the 5.4 to that one, is that available with that truck ??? And where I can order it ? Thanks, looks amazing.

The 2k here and there is more manageable for me. Because I do a lot of overtime sporadically. So when I get ot I can just buy something no sweat

I did a similar upgrade on my 2018 f150. Got all the parts out of a lariat truck that was at the scrap yard for pennies compared to buying new.
Would love to see you guy's install some fog lights on that truck!
That truck is so amazingly beautiful!!
This is a nice upgrade. It amazes me how they sell these huge 18" (or whatever it is) that has the same functionality they just deleted the physical knobs to the ac/heater.
18" is the screen size of the largest laptop, LOL

Willing to bet that's a lot harder, what with running lines and installing cameras. They put in those camera harnesses before they put the chassis on.
Pretty soon you'll be doing things like this to be able to even have heated seats
Sometimes customers come in with electrical concerns it’s literally that simple at times all the system needs is a little reset to start working right

Plus the new one has duel climate
you didnt link the radio/bezel kit you swapped in this truck, you linked a whole bunch of towing stuff only

It requires a retrofit harness. It's about 100 on top of this.
Unplug and plug it back in and that fixed it? Cheap quality.
