    It legitimately pained me to see Deckard die. Then when I can played through the game again a few years later. It pained me to realize that his death had no bearing on the story. They did our boy dirty.

      I'm still baffled by it as well. It feels like they killed him just to bring him back later because he died so unceremoniously. Kinda summarises the "evolution" of the franchise pretty well tbh. Kill off one of the main characters while simultaneously making him look like a cenile old man for no particular reason. Rip out parts of the game that give it it's soul because the new writers didn't want to be beholdent to an already established character, and replace him with one of the most forgettable characters in the series as essentially the main character. I liked the story in d3 as a whole but god damn some of those main story beats were so poorly written

It's definitely a complex game to get a full handle of on your own, but it's likely the best of the series for how it perfected the ideas from Diablo 1. 23 years later and it's still a game being played avidly, and many modern ARPGs are being compared to still today for good reason

    One other difference between the classes in Diablo 1 is their animations. It might sound weird, but a warrior will swing his sword more times per second than a rogue or mage.

    • @whokilledmydoggie
      @whokilledmydoggie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @AngelofThe Past This. The animations were pretty much what defined the classes, which means that people who actually played the different classes soon developed a "feel" that the characters were different way before someone took the time to actually figure the animations out frame by frame.
      Rogues shoot bows faster than other classes, Warriors swing swords faster than other classes and Sorcerers can cast spells faster than other classes. The difference between a warrior casting a spell and a sorcerer casting a spell is definitely noticeable - the warrior does his little stance where he raises his weapon parallel to his body as if concentrating, while all the sorcerer does is raise his arms.
      This is important because it means the difference between a Sorcerer out-casting enemies with spells like Holy Bolt (allowing the Sorcerer to potentially stunlock Diablo where other classes couldn't, for example) or Rogues using the Bow of the Bear effectively.

      Yeah, I don't think the author of this video spent too much time in the first Diablo. I would not ever say 'Oswald' but he did it twice. Animation times is another thing. Attribute caps are essential to gameplay but he only briefly mentioned those. Also personally, I wouldn't have failed to mention the gold holding limit, i.e. one cannot buy the best items in the shops which is daft.😂

    • @darbstews8926
      @darbstews8926 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @marcinjackowski8898 because in comparison, the other games make diablo 1 look like a walk in the park. When you compare diablo 1 to 2, diablo 2 is a much bigger game. He spends more time on each game as the video progresses. He never really dives into deep mechanics like how the warrior swings the sword faster, nor does he dive into the mechanics of the other games.

I deeply thank you for this video, I honestly feel like your a blood-brother of mine who shares his love for Diablo. I may not agree with everything, but I loved to hear opinions or perspectives that I do not share to broaden my own view. You even reigned my desire to play Diablo 3 RoS in its current form (even tho I hate D3 mainly for story, visual, itemization and dumbed down character building ie. stats, but also I can never forgive them for killing Deckard Cain with pathetic butterflies). I've been thinking about playing d1 but have been indecisive. The game's age isn't a problem but I didn't know how much I could gain from playing it compared to D2 which I already have played a ton. You're definitely selling how good D1 is.

    • @brightenblack207
      @brightenblack207 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't agree with your praise for the exponential growth in D3. The only items that matter are the ones that make your specific skills exponentially more powerful. Legendary items and set items are all you care about (even then you're usually stuck with only a few items that actually help you go into higher rifts so everything else doesn't matter). Every other kind of item you throw away because none of them will give you useful stats. They're not going to help you. And you literally can not progress through rifts without your gear. You are entirely useless unless you have good items. In D2 on Hell, you aren't reliant on your gear. It certainly helps and makes things easier but you can get through the challenge. You can progress through the game with rough gear but when you finally find a really good item that enhances your build, it feels amazing. The enemies and how you play actually mean something, too. There are enemies you are going to be weak against stats-wise and how they attack/behave. There are enemies that you can't even kill depending on your build and you learn how to play around them. Every enemy in D3 is insignificant. You play the same way you would against each of them and all that matters is you killing things quickly enough.

      I would recommend looking into something like the Belzebub HD mod for Diablo 1. This mod does add stuff and I don't know if you can turn the additions off, but one of the major points of pain in Diablo 1 that I would HIGHLY recommend modding out is that originally you had to click the mouse for every single attack and every single movement. There was no holding the mouse button to continue attacking or continue moving, we just didn't have that feature back in the Diablo 1 days. That being said, it is a fantastic game and it has a much darker, more forboding atmosphere.
      I liked the Belzebub mod because it makes the UI a bit easier to manage, it does add stuff that expands the game (since I've played it a lot) but it also re-adds content that was cut from the original release of the game, and it adds a few additional class abilities to make the characters feel a bit more specialized.

The gothic art style, the dark & depressing realism, that AMAZING MOOD SETTING MUSIC! from Tristrams more calm but ominous melodies to The Monastery dungeons and below the music feets deeper and deeper into the darkness. AMAZING!
    What about how great all the enemies look, those succubus eh? 😜 Not to mention how amazing the sound FX are when hitting them followed by their Gorey death animations.
    Just a brilliant game.

    It's wierd how in the Diablo III section you didn't bring up the Auction House, the reason why loot drops were so horrible to begin with. It was a crucial part of the situation that is missing in your reflection.

    • @icepic21
      @icepic21 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, an absolutely crucial part of the series' history.
      Therefore, giving credence to the console version of Diablo 3, which due to lack of auction house had tremendous loot quality drops. With how positively received that was by the fans, it marked the end of the auction house by Blizzard.
      But perhaps, this was before the Activision merger.

    @6:08 You mention that Diablo was pretty much the first rpg to just have you starting with a few clicks compared to other rpg with its d&d like start up. But in fact there is tons of rpg in the late 80s and 90s that you just start with a few clicks and name some characters. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series come to mind if not many others. I would say that Diablo looked at games like Dragon Quest where you start a game up, name a character and your off. Most of the stats is from level and not added before start and that is a 1986 rpg.

    Okay, something I have to say about Chris Metzen- The dude pre-World of Warcraft (and even after WoW but mainly prior to WoW as there was a long hiatus in Blizzard games that were hugely narrative) was a world building GENIUS. A legend.
    You might think that the story and lore of Diablo was fleshed out with Diablo 2, but you'd be wrong. The scope of what they could tell inside of the game had evolved, but Chris Metzen didn't half ass games that he worked on narratively. The Horadrim capturing the three Prime Evils using soulstones given to them by the Archangel Tyrael, Baal's stone being shattered in the process, and Tal Rasha using himself as an additional means of containment to counteract this were all actually IN THE DIABLO 1 MANUAL.
    This dude wrote the names of angels and demons that we wouldn't even see in Diablo 1. He drew concept art for Izual falling from heaven (back when angels were literally imagined as angels from Christian faith). Chris Metzen was basically the face of every narrative that Blizzard wrote. If you asked him to work on the narrative for a game, he didn't just do the narrative for the game. The man wrote entire lore bibles on what the history of that world was. I don't know the full extent of the lore that he wrote, but it seems like he pretty much had the ideas down from the very beginning which just blows my fucking mind.

    I think the issue with post-D2 games (and even D2 in it's later years) is the concept that all content is there to be experienced by all players. It's like when people complain about there being too many Korok seeds in Zelda, they're not there for one person to find all of them, they're there for all players to find enough of them. What this means is that instead of Hell difficulty being the end-game of Diablo 2, the fight with Baal is the end of Diablo 2, and Nightmare and Hell are there for people who just want more. Same with the extra dialogue between quest updates, easter eggs like the secret cow level, and insanely powerful and rare item drops.
    This would be fine in any other series, but I think the proximity to WoW and Starcraft really did a number on the perception of Diablo as a series. Instead of an adventure ARPG, people saw a system to min-max, and they ended up ruining it, just like they optimized the fun out of MMOs. Diablo 4 has so many decisions in it that seem contrary to the first two games, stuff like turning the overworlds into linear "outdoor dungeons", taking away the ability to manage your own potion belt or needing to identify items, and starting out the Necromancer with 4 skeletons right off the bat, and it's because Diablo has turned into a game about mastering systems and consuming content like a swarm of locusts, and not actually experiencing the game.
    This really hit home when I tried out D2 Resurrected, I was really excited to hear they'd changed almost nothing, but what that meant is they'd kept it the same as it was in 2010. As soon as I started playing online, normal difficulty, not on hardcore, people were dogging me for not playing best in slot items or skills. The idea of playing your own character and making your own adventure went out the window with a real world economy and the expectation that the game is there to be devoured, not enjoyed.

    Great video! One of the best Diablo retrospectives on YT!
    Lore wise (not a critique, just take it constructively), I just want to mention that D1, D2 and D3 do have consistency in regards to the story.
    Leoric had 2 sons: Albrecht, the young prince that was abducted, and Aidan ("The warrior" character), the older son who returns in Tristram from the on-going war in Westmarch. Set up by Lazarus, Diablo awakens within Albrecht and it's defeated by Aidan, who then becomes "The Wanderer" in D2 to try and contain Diablo's essence. Aidan / The Wanderer DOES "visit" Adria, thus Leah is later born...
    Unfortunately, the D3 cutscenes don't do justice to the lore in the books :(
    "The Order" does explain how Leah was raised by Cain and the ordeals they went through, it does not make sense for her not to believe him. And yes, there no sense for Cain to have died during D3.
    Looking forward to your D4 analysis, after the full release.

      When I was investigating, I couldn’t find any reference that the warrior was Aiden until D3. Is there a book that announced this before hand?

      @@AngelOfThePast Diablo 3 is the first iteration of Aiden. If I remember there was a Blizzcon in '07 where Metzen (could be another writer) explains it.
      As for the story, it is an amazing tragedy that uses mythological elements to weave a meaningful story. I would say that without that 10/10 story many people would not have remember and enjoyed the games as much as they have. I have a few videos about it on my channel where I go through the manual and the intro cinematic to the game: these videos go further in analyzing what makes the story so good.

    I don't think D3 ROS is the game most associated with Diablo. It did sell a crazy amount between that and D3 base, but they were often packaged with consoles or promoted with special stuff which inflates the number of sales. In terms of cultural impact though, it has to be D2 or D1. D1 has the iconic "Stay awhile and listen" line as well as the introduction to so many of the core concepts of Diablo. Diablo 2 has things that would go on to define both Diablo and the genre as a whole form gameplay, to mechanics, to atmosphere. The necromancer's popularity is almost entirely because of his appearance in D2. Both D2 and D1 are linked to the cow level as well. I think D3 and it's sales are more a product of the previous games, even ROS. So, I can't really say that it's the quintessential Diablo game/experience.
    To balance things out, I did enjoy this video and I think you had some insightful thoughts on Diablo 1 and 2 (especially regarding the cow level and uber tristram in D2). It was fun to listen to while I beta tested D4.

    I never thought about the tone shift between 1 and 2, interesting. Certainly the character power progression curve is different as is the role your character plays. However, darkness in environment in D2 plus the many more zones and flavors, many in near total darkness, makes these seem much closer together in tone.

    Heyo man, I really appreciate this retrospective, you were very detailed and imo felt not biased by nostalgia. As a casual Diablo fan that's followed the franchise just for the lore and beating the game once in normal difficulty, I find it very hard to find any coverage that isn't just about high end game content, or people trashing D3 relentlessly and calling D2 the only worthwhile game in the series.
    As of a few weeks ago I got 2-4 on a good discount for Series X and I'm falling in love with the whole thing again, for me, D1 and 4 are my favorites, they are dark, edgy, grim as hell and closer to that dark fantasy that got me to love the franchise about 20 or so years ago, 2 I've started several times but I always drop it on the third act, and 3 I actually enjoyed at release, did a single playthrough and forgot about it until now, maybe when I play through Reaper of Souls I'll see the huge difference you mentioned.
