    When I was jogging, I always preferred jogging outside. I HATED, being on a treadmill, inside. I want to feel like I'm going somewhere, seeing things. Outside is really where it's at.

    I'm so thankful to be a "professional" window cleaner out pretty much all day. I'll never forget this one time my boss reminded me of this. He said, "be sure to take a second every now and then and just take in the scenery. We live in a beautiful place" it's almost always after the current job is completed, Peace of Mind knowing I've done a job well done and the reward of acknowledging the moment for what it is 😸

    I watched a lot of your videos but been avoiding this one because I thought it would be boring. It started playing while my hands were busy. And after 5 minutes I sticked to it with ears wide open and now I am watching it for second time. The proof you never made a video that I did not like 😊. You are great. Your way of delivering the message is great. I am grateful for every video you made. Thank you ❤

    I think over the years humans have forgotten the animal part of the human condition, we are just animals with big brains, we are part of nature, and we evolve by modifying it. We've spent thousands of years of evolution outside, so it's no surprise that nowadays we feel trapped in the cities, in our rooms. So far, the best memories of my life have been in nature, away from the cities and people, contemplating. Not in a hippie way, I'm a very rational person, but I still feel more alive in nature.

    • @languagegame410
      @languagegame410 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      though you articulated your thoughts with most excellent clarity and eloquence, sir stranger... i must object... perceiving the human condition and human nature merely through the scientific lens, belies the depth and complexity of the human soul... (and my use of the word "soul" was intended to provoke you... though i can only hope i have succeeded in my bold endeavor!).

    This is a fantastic reminder for appreciation of the outdoors! I am privileged to live near one of the most beautiful hiking places of my country. However the 'be as productive as you can be' mindset has done a number on me; i put headphones in and listen to a podcast or i would have 'wasted' 1,5 hours just walking.
    Real spring weather is coming so i'm going to try enjoy the nature when hiking without headphones. 💟

    This was one of your best videos Lewis. It has inspired me a lot. Since I watched this video when you first published it, I have implemented your suggestion into my daily activities. I am now walking more in beautiful parks while listening to philosophy and science audiobooks. You are absolutely right that it has a positive impact on how you think. I also share your view that walking outside more has a tendency to free your mind from dogmatic strains of thought and encourages one to consider other perspectives. Really appreciate the effort you put into making this awesome video. :)

    This video might explain why I love your narrations. You are closing in on subjects more like a stroll than a walk. It's not just about getting to the conclusion, it's this "verweilen" (directly translated from German as "lingering", but conciously contemplating and taking pleasure in it) with an idea what makes your videos very special. Even if it isn't much, but I hope my small tip is an appreciation for your work. Your videos are timeless and so it isn't all about getting new content to consume, but I still cherish the idea to explore new topics with your input!

    Thanks for existing Lewis, you put a lot of my thoughts into words. This is why I relocated to Canada; I realized I needed fresh air and the ability to get lost in nature within a few kilometres. It relieves tension and gives shape to my ideas, thoughts and creativity. The sublime experience we find in nature is both overwhelming and enlightening it allows us to transcend our own restricted perspectives and connect with something greater than ourselves.

    This reminds me of an interesting phenomenon we have observed with astronauts where once being out in the incomprehensively endless void of space we tend to see a nearly identical shift in perspective about the self.
    I unfortunately don't remember the details, but definitely something interesting to look into as I think it very strongly ties into what you said about perception, location, and a variety of inputs forcing you to change your point of view on a biocognitive level

    "gently distracted from your own concious thoughts" is portrayed as a good thing here...intersting. But i don't quite feel that way in nature to be honest. It rather inspires me to listen to my thoughts with more attention. Huberman talks about the GO and No-GO mode, where a certain amount of noise etc. raises your awareness which you can then direct wherever you want to eg. your own thoughts (thats the GO mode followed by the No-GO mode). That explains better for me why i can't always follow my thoughts as well inside.

    I live in a large US city and also fairly close to one of the best birdwatching sites in the US. When I go there, I don't necessarily notice feeling better or more relaxed being in nature, but that does happen because it's very obvious when I drive back to the city and my shoulders tense up. I also think that showing another person the beauty and benefit of being in nature is very satisfying.

    Fabulous video. Something else about being outside are the two beneficial effects from light and sunlight; sunlight for Vitamin D and, as those of us prone to Seasonal Affected Disorder can attest, the decibels of light are much greater outside than indoors, especially on a dull day, so being outside can cure depression caused by S.A.D. Our species evolved over seven million years, while we have lived in cities for only 7,000 Years, and we have been sedentary farmers for only twelve thousand years. Little wonder that we tend to function best when we get exposure to the great outdoors! In a college lecture I watched on plant identification the phrase plant blindness was defined as the tendency to not pay attention to plants, not understanding their importance, and not being able to distinguish one plant from another. In my opinion plant blindness should be a crime. It makes me so sad that when most people go outside they see trees or grass or stars or rocks, while I see willows or wild mustard or the constellations canis major or monoceros or a piece of quartz or chert. It just goes to show how far from nature we've gotten as a species and why our world is so screwed up. This video helps confirm how I think we should live. Go outside and learn about what's there people

    Great video! Excellent follow up to your video about attention a few months ago. I'm very ADHD and my psychiatrist always recommends lots of walking in the woods and/or mountain biking. Says multiple studies have shown it's an effective way of managing ADHD, with or without medication, and it makes a lot of sense given the positive effects you describe in the video. I go for walks in the woods when I can, unfortunately the last few months life circumstances have kept me away from it as often as I'd like, but I recommend it to anyone who suffers from difficulties with depression, anxiety, difficulty with attention/focus, and executive dysfunction.

    Isn't the default mode network associated with anxiety , rumination, excessive self focus etc ? With the task positive network being associated with getting out of rumination, like with certain types of meditation .
    The joy of nature, walking and its impact is wonderful .... I started s little channel here just shooting nature scenes , in the style of a photo, but film.
    I live in the city, which is great in many ways ... craving nature , space, the different pace , air ... and for a long time , living there. In fact watching your piece and writing this has made this desire, calling , very clear to me.
    Thanks for another fabulous piece of work.

    • @JanoDo
      @JanoDo ปีที่แล้ว

      The DMN is just that: default. It's the compendium of brain circuits that get's activated whenever we're not "exercizing our counscious will", so to speak. Although there certainly are commonalities among individuals, there's probably some differences from one to another. Let us not be fallen on simplistic dualities as one is good and the other is bad; i don't think this video points to that.
      I guess the main point in bringin up this two brain functions or networks is just to remark that when we are in nature, unbounded to any particular task, the brain just falls into a default, uncontrolled mode.
      Note that this video also points to the effect of the enviroment we are in onto our brain and psychology, a fact i think is undisputable. Now think about this: if the Default Mode Network is the mode we fall whenever we're not doing anything in particular, then perhaps this is exactly the time when our enviroment is more prone to take over and surpass our counscious will. So, given that measures, examples and thoughts about what happens when the DMN takes over our brains are probably made on city dwellers, maybe - just maybe - those negative characteristcs you associated with the DMN are actually the byproduct of the enviroment that affects that brain, meaingn, the city!

Although I live in a small city surrounded by mountains and nature, I feel happier and more relaxed when I go to a big city away from nature. I love nature, I am part of it but prefer it from a distance. I guess not all humans are made the same.

      this is a good point, reminds me of the Talking Heads Song Nothing but Flowers "Don't leave me stranded here (Nature) I can't get used to this lifestyle".

    Everything mentioned and recommended in this video is true. I know it because i experienced all of it. My greatest ideas came from a nature walk.
