This was an amazing synopsis. I truly loved this game and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who will talk to me about it. I’ve actually been trying to recreate and update the combat system in Unreal Engine. Honestly the combat in this game hooked me and I never felt myself getting bored with it. The fact that it has such an amazing story was something I didn’t expect. God I wish they made games like this these days.
It's kind of sad that today's gaming industry focuses more on spending tons of money on one project rather than splitting it among lots of different projects that can cater to different gamers. If you look at Square's games during the PS1 era, there was all sorts of innovation and fresh concepts, even for its flagship FF series.
It’s also sad one bad project can just tank a studio and then you have to hope someone else buys the assets or it’s lose forever. PS1 era was truly a special time you’re spot on.
The good ole days when everything that SquareSoft released, was straight fire. I was 15 when this game came out and it is still one of my top RPGs. Square needs to stop appealing to the West and get back to its roots.
Honestly Square really squandered their team as they left to form Monolith. Now they are stuck with table scraps as they cannot make much use of the license.
@@ZX-Gear sadly that is the truth. Monolith is cooking right now making banger after banger. Will say at least that the promotion of Hamaguchi and Asano are at least promising for the future.
@SnarfsSoldier17 Honestly with how Square alienated the author of Parasite Eve I am glad that they cannot touch that series. The same cannot be said about other licenses. Square has not been doing great these days. Even Sakagutchi's Mistwalker has fallen off which is depressing as I loved Lost Odyssey and wished I played Blue Dragon and Archaic Sealed Heat.
@@ZX-Gear part of the problem besides what you mentioned is unrealistic sales expectations which hurt the team and the players and reduce their likelihood to reinvigorate older games like parasite eve, gears, Brave Fencer Musashi. Etc. The new CEO hopefully gets them on the right track.
@SnarfsSoldier17 It is a AAA problem where their budgets are overbloated as well. They need to downsize and temper expectations. You don't need hundreds of people in a development team and just using MoCap with no art direction hurts how a game looks.
I come back to this game every few years. It was one of the first RPGs I had beaten as a boy, back when the PS1 was still just a "Sony", and I barely knew what the hell was going on. I just thought that the battle system was cool, and having anime cutscenes in video games was still pretty novel, even if it was pretty badly done and terribly synced up, lol. But When I replay this game nowadays, I notice all of the allusions to geopolitical conflicts, and other crazy comparisons to stuff that's happening in the real world like with the whole Palestine/Israel conflict, and am just amazed. This game truly is a timeless classic. Anyways, good review. Thumbs up.
I came back again after playing in my younger days and so many things just went over my head but playing as an adult you really appreciate the little things that they included and pick up on the finer details. Thanks for watching!
This was the game that got me into JRPGs. One of the first real "epic" games I've played. It also gave me a lifelong friendship. When I was in 9th grade, I noticed a guy drawing Ramsus gear from the back of the jewel case. I asked him about it, and we started talking. Fast forward 23 years, and we're still best friends today. It's a game that has changed my life for the better.
@@XChronicHash it's the hard plastic disk case PS1 games came in. Don't know why they're called that, maybe to differentiate the difference between the earlier PS1 cases that were taller and the later smaller cases.
My favorite RPG storyline of all time. I both wish they had more time to flesh it out and that there would be an remake with quality of life updates, but I know they'd do it awful like theyre currently butchering the FF7 remake.
@@DJGHOSH it’s true peak fiction for sure! Though I will say I’ve been enjoying the FF7 remake trilogy so far. If they were to not stick the landing though I would be pretty disappointed.
I really would love to see what the original vision was, in full scope, with how compressed disc 2 is. Yes, I can imagine the game growing a bit tiresome after a while, if they did literally everything described, but who knows what great moments we might've had in the mean time. Good vid, very nostalgic to me.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, if we were ever to get a full remake I would like to see them flesh out the second disc with some dungeons to explore and a little more explanation on the lore.
Thoughtful analysis! I was disappointed at how sparse disc 2 was at first, but I think it would feel extremely drawn out if we did all the things the characters describe - disc 1 is pretty long already! I think the finale of the game is one of it's best aspects, so it's worth it in the end.
@@vertz505 The final dungeon alone made disc 2 worth it in spite of some minor inconveniences. In a way, having it be a visual novel quickened the story without bloating with nonsense. I am still going to cope that they’ll remaster it someday and add minor QOL changes to it.
@@SnarfsSoldier17 man I wish Nintendo would make a deal with Square Enix to let Monolith remastering or remaking for the Switch (2). As it seems they are on cordial terms with Bandai Namco, so I also hope for a remaster of Xenosaga 1-3
