Lisa, so glad you finally got this Lenovo product review! I have read one of the comments below, and I am also an Android Developer / Software Developer. However, my choices are different from the other person's comment. I am between these 2 devices: Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus and this Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. Weight has been a big factor for me in terms of portability, so that is why I have narrowed it down to these two Windows based platforms. If you could please give me your advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
So glad to hear a review call out Chrome for being a resource hog and give IE its due. It's little things like this that remind me why you are my go-to reviewer.
Used this laptop for a total of four years, it did not hold up well. - Battery lost most of its charge capacity. - Screen, keyboard, or trackpad would cease working after the laptop went to sleep, requiring a complete power reset. - CPU did not have enough power in 2019 to be able to run multiple basic applications (Chrome with a few tabs, Word, SumatraPDF) without sever chugging. - Original charger brick became defective and would only charge when prongs were at a certain angle - Glossy screen would reflect anything in even the lowest lighting - Touch screen was often inaccurate and would require recalibration. I should have just stuck with my Dell Inspiron N5110 from 2011, as that is strong as my office PC, the only downsides being its resolution, weight, and battery capacity.
There is other models of the Yoga 3 and comes with other Intel chips but let's understand one fact that Windows 8 and 8.1 were meant from tablets devices. So yes, this is perfect for the broadwell CPU from intel
I'd wait for the ones with 17W broadwell (Yoga 4?) in q1 2015. these Core M parts throttle way too fast (at least the way Lenovo has it configured with 3.5W tdp). Other people may be fine with it, it's only an issue for long sustained loads.
So what's a point of that screen resolution, when you can't run it at native resolution without scaling because text will be to small to read, and with scaling is basically same as 1080p screen; it just eats more power to run all those pixels... And from usual viewing distances, there is no person in world that can spot difference in pixel density on screen of that size. I have 27'' dell monitor with 2560x1440 px resolution, and sitting at arms length from monitor there is no chance for me to spot "pixels", so I'm sure there will be even less chance to spot pixels on 13.3'' monitor and "just" 1080p resolution screen.
Still using this in 2024 and not too bad for basic tasks, starting to have various issues using Linux though, would love to keep using this as its so slim has an amazing screen is all around brilliant and the battery still lasts two hours on yooutube! just need a Linux distro that plays nice.
I really dont get this, most review have reported the Yoga 3 Pro as being slow on performace. Yet I find myself streaming this video in 1080p and at the same time installing a game on steam in the background with a hint of stutter. And this on default power settings on default Lenovo Windows 8 installation. On battery. And the fan doesnt even come on. Must admit I am as surprised myself, as this machine was not being intended as a workhorse or similar but a "second machine" for vaccations etc. This is a brand new unit with the 5Y71 CPU instead of 5Y70, but that alone should not be able to explain the difference, or could it?
Thanks for the detailed review Lisa. I'm an android developer and am torn between yoga 2, yoga 3, asus zen and macbook air. Can you share your thoughts on what would be a better choice? Can these ultrabooks be used for hardcore development?
If you're a developer get a Macbook Air because if in future you want to create an iPhone or iPad version of your app you may be forced to use a Mac to publish it. Also there are certain useful tools (such as cross-platform app prototyping/wireframing and cross-platform app development software) that are only available on Mac. You can always install Windows on a Mac (dual-boot) so you can potentially get the best of both worlds. Also Macbook Airs are actually just as affordable if not cheaper, and have decent specs and performance.
Manikantan Subramanyam Thanks to the dedicated graphics, the UX303LN would be the most powerful among the lot. Though dedicated graphics won't help with compiling. Still, you get the Core i7 and it will be up to the task.
MobileTechReview, TerriTerriHotSauce Thank you so much for the insights. Although the Macbook does have an advantage of ios+android development, its little pricey for the configuration they offer currently. I have owned a Lenovo Ideapad Y470 before and have faced wifi issues. Also the hinges weren't that strong and started slacking after using for more than a year. This makes me a little skeptical about how the yoga hinges might perform. The UX303LN seems like a nice overall powerful machine with more ram, better processor, dedicated graphics card and an identical display.
God damn.. that thing looks like a work of art. The only reason why I didn't buy a Yoga 2 Pro is because it took Lenovo an age to make it available for purchase in the UK and I eventually lost interest waiting. I'd love it if they released this in black instead of the usual silver or orange.
Personally, it all comes down to preference. If you prefer the standard laptop feel (a sturdy keyboard), I would go for the Yoga 3 Pro. If mobility is more of your thing, I'd go with the Surface 3.
sp3 if performance matters to you and you wantit for actual productivity. The performance of the sp3 is crazy. Also the pen ks realy nice. However if you want it more for networking kind of purposes, spme might prefer the yoga being more of a conventional laptop. However going for the yoga, id go for the thinkpad version. the ideapad for me is just horrible, here is why: 1. crazy bad performance 2. hinge gets stuff stuck in it due to its open design and thus has a very short lifetime 3. ugly huge bezels 4. thus much larger than it needed to be 5. even though it's so huge, no number block 6. no pen 7. tons of bolatware 8. some models have bios issues 9. due to distance btw display and glass horrible backlight bleeds Lastly to say, I have the sp3 and love it. However the Thinkpad yoga is pretty sexy too and doesn't have any of the above mentioned problems... Hope I could help :)
Lisa, can you provide screenshots of the benchmark scores or a list or something when you are talking about them? Gives us something to look at other than a static laptop, and a chance to visualize the numbers.
Lisa, would you agree that Yoga 2 Pro look better than Yoga 3? A bit hesitant because of the hinge not looking well with orange, and the keyboard not looking that good.
Is the battery icon at the bottom right new in Windows or has it been added by some kind of software for the Yoga? Also great idea with the dual purpose power port as a USB.
very innovative, I believe Lenovo will eventually lead, if they are not already, the laptop market. I had many Lenovos in the past, and they were all very good experience. Having Youga 11s now, not very happy with the resolution, or the processor speed. But ok over all, and I still love it. Will wait to upgrade though when these new Yougas become a little cheaper.
Great review as always Lisa. I'm very interested in one of the new Yoga models and I've watched both reviews. Do you think you might do a quick comparison video between them? I'm not sure which I like more as they both have their own unique positives. Thanks!
Those are NOT six hinges! What you pointed at are the gears that prevent the system from doing whatever it wants. Between the gears you have the actual hinges and i count 4.
The audio is still troublesome for my ears LIsa, but the video quality even at 1080p still have some moire and some noise switch isn't good. So if you looking at the Yoga 3 screen and trying to figure out how clear and sharp it is, this video doesn't do any justice
I will only be using my laptop for photoshop/photo editing and watching movies in bed. I want it to be portable and light hence I am looking at this computer (and I don't like using Mac). Would you recommend the Yoga 2 or the Yoga 3 more? Does the Yoga 2's colour rendition (yellows) make it a no go for photo editing? And do the yellow fixes work the 2? Thank you for your reviews...I have spent many hours trying to make the right choice.
Great review as usual Lisa. I find loving my Y2P more and more everyday. I did check out the latest Y3P and I must say, not really a huge difference on weight or thinness. I think for the value, people are better off with a Y2P i7 (like I have) for a huge performance boost. I also compared the touch/bounce on the screen, and surprisingly it has the same screen bounce effect. So the hinge may look nice, but it does not prevent screen bounce.
So Best Buy has the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro for $999 on Black Friday...But I'm also kinda interested in the Yoga 3 Pro, which is $300 more. Which one should I get?
Hi Really love your review I was interested in this Ultrabook just wanted to ask if you think with would be powerful enough to run the following all at the same time without the machine slowing down 6 web pages, photoshop, outlook, excel & word.
I would like to express some thoughts about ultrabooks : The target audience for ultrabooks are most likely business class individuals, CEO, Managers Supervisors and in the bracket of 35 to 65 years old. The reset button should not be near the power button!. USB ports at least half an inch away from each other!. Number of usb ports atleast 3-4 ports, 2 left and 2 on the right or anywhere the sides!. HDMI port should be the standard size hdmi port!. Consider silver color on the kyboard surface or atleast silver everywhere, this is required speially on low light and dark moments!. I dig this machine... getting closer to the ideal... hows the build size/dimensions/weight stack up against the mac air? In a perfect world, the macbook air would get a retina screen and be convertible...
I was super excited for the new version, but unfortunately I do not like the look compared to the Y2P. The overdone hinge, the dimpled face, the split chin above the hinge, and the design lines it uses on the sides aren't as classy as the Y2P. Although the slimness is impressive. Anyways, awesome review as always! :)
MobileTechReview I have a personal question since im considering to buy this laptop. When you unfold or push the screen to the back as you show in your video 3:48, What happens with the keyboard. Yes its on the bottom but when you're holding it, does it still function? is there a possibility that when its on your lap for example and something in your pocket pokes the buttons it responds?
Which is better? Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 3 Pro, Acer Aspire S7, or that Asus one that is kind of brown-ish. I would like a laptop that I can use for school, Netflix, some games, etc. I'm not looking for a gaming laptop. Thanks!
Damn. If only there was the option of an i5 or i7, this would be my dream laptop. Portable, flexible, well built, Lenovo's reliability, and for once a good screen. But that Core M is just not powerful enough
^That's debatable. The M chips can reach i5/i7 clockspeeds on turbo boost, but that inevitably equates to heat and thermal throttling. And even then, they cannot compete with the i chips in performance at demanding tasks, such as photo editing and other graphics work. For those reasons, the M chip is not a good option for me, and many other consumers.
+TRASHoftheTITANS After more tests, I found the Core M isn't as good as they stated, however, Yoga released the "Yoga 900" Which has either a core i5 or core i7, and either 8GB or 16GB Ram.
Good machine but has several drawbacks. I desperately want an ultrabook and i'm waiting for the Asus UX305, although yoga's main feature (360 turn) is great and really tempts me.
Mine is Lenovo Yoga 700 with Windows 10. If this is a setting issue and not a corrupted file can you spell out the solution so when I'm forced to restart in safe mode I can follow along?
As usual, fantastic review. I'm debating between this and the Surface Pro 3. Also, wondering if Apple will FINALLY update the MacBook Air next year and add a high resolution screen. Guess I will play the waiting game...
Great one except one huge fall for me - that small right Shift key. Not only it looks ridiculous to me for design language, but also it is a major downfall for typing convenience.
hey, Lisa, would u mind comparing the yoga 2 pro with 4th gen core i5 to the yoga 3 pro with core m in terms of battery, so that i can decide whether the "amazing battery life" the core m should give could compromise with the lack of performance compared to 4th gen cpu! THX!
Justin Chan if* typo It means the battery is not much better than the last model. 6-7 hours on light/power saver use... it's not gonna get 9+ battery life with that high res screen. Get the i7 yoga 2 pro... 100mhz would only tax about 15mins compared to the i5
I need suggestions - this lenovo surface 3 pro or a macbook pro? I'm going to be using the computer for a Computer Science Degree in college that's going to require a lot of coding and multitasking.
Overall what latop/tablet do you suggest for an aspiring author who is trying to write his very first published book (note: I do want to hand draw some animations/pictures into the book)
Don't get a tablet laptop. Get a regular laptop and a drawing tablet, like the Bamboo Capture. The Asus Vivobook 550 is pretty solid for a 15.6" laptop with i5 processor. A Bamboo Capture is around $100, so you could get the two together for around $600.
I already have a Toshiba satellite laptop but how would I get my illustrations (art files) to the laptop or better yet into the word document that I want to insert an illustration into
Can I play games on yoga 3 pro and if I can't what do you suggest??? I am searching for light laptop 14" Max and I can play with What do you think pls respond????? :)
Would have bought if they had used a better processor like the one in dell xps 13, yoga 2 performs alot better which is sad. Also batterylife seems at best on par with Yoga 2 and some reviews even have it rated lower. All in all would rather buy Yoga 2 at a lower price, for a more powerful machine with equal or better batterylife, especially now that a bios has been released to fix the yellow color issue. Something like Dell XPS 13 has better processor and better batterylife, it doesnt do tablet mode but other than that it is superior to Yoga 3 imo.
looks the appropriate yellow... he's bright green on the video

Hey Lisa, great review on the yoga 3 pro. Im looking forward to watching more of your great vids. :)
i got mine a few days ago.

Lisa I love listening to you review. Great job. Tim.
i really love your reviews. You do such a great job and really give the reviewer a vast mount a info. thanks again. Keep it up
All hail the Queen of Tech Reviews... All Rise!!!
It is a really good review from lisa. I always like her reviews.
Other than that, HP and lenovo are going head to head in sales.

Its normal for the fan not turn rotate its good too for less dust

Which Zenbook?

Bought used for 300 Euros, great machine!
Any thought on Yoga 3 Pro VS Surface Pro 3?
Personally, it all comes down to preference. If you prefer the standard laptop feel (a sturdy keyboard), I would go for the Yoga 3 Pro. If mobility is more of your thing, I'd go with the Surface 3.
i have the surface pro 3 it has issues and kickstand is annoying. give me a hinge or get out
sp3 if performance matters to you and you wantit for actual productivity. The performance of the sp3 is crazy. Also the pen ks realy nice. However if you want it more for networking kind of purposes, spme might prefer the yoga being more of a conventional laptop. Lastly to say, I have the sp3 and love it. However the Thinkpad yoga is pretty sexy too and doesn't have any of the above mentioned problems...
Hope I could help :)
Please do a in depth comparison between the Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 and Microsoft Surface Pro 3. I am in debate of the two. Thanks.
Really expensive product. They need to bring the price down.

Hi Lisa
Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro or HP Spectre x360 ?!
It's just a design choice at this level of devices specs ?
Thanks :)

Hi Lisa great review, can you advise if the outer shell is metal or plastic please?
Great review as always Lisa. I'm very interested in one of the new Yoga models and I've watched both reviews. Do you think you might do a quick comparison video between them? I'm not sure which I like more as they both have their own unique positives. Thanks!
Are you going to review the HP Pro x2 612 G1?
Those are NOT six hinges!
What you pointed at are the gears that prevent the system from doing whatever it wants.
Between the gears you have the actual hinges and i count 4.
Hi Lisa, will you be doing a review of the Acer Aspire R13? Thanks
The audio is still troublesome for my ears LIsa, but the video quality even at 1080p still have some moire and some noise switch isn't good. So if you looking at the Yoga 3 screen and trying to figure out how clear and sharp it is, this video doesn't do any justice
Will you be reviewing the Yoga Tablet 2 as well? They just started selling it at Best Buy!
What would be better, the Yoga 3 Pro or Yoga 2 Pro?
Great Review! Thanks. One question; how does the Yoga 3 do with non-linear, hi-def video editing?
I will only be using my laptop for photoshop/photo editing and watching movies in bed. I want it to be portable and light hence I am looking at this computer (and I don't like using Mac).
Would you recommend the Yoga 2 or the Yoga 3 more?
Does the Yoga 2's colour rendition (yellows) make it a no go for photo editing? And do the yellow fixes work the 2?
Thank you for your reviews...I have spent many hours trying to make the right choice.
Lisa your totally awesome, your my go to Tech/Girl I could listen to you for hours, YOU ROCK. :))))
Great review as usual Lisa. I find loving my Y2P more and more everyday. I did check out the latest Y3P and I must say, not really a huge difference on weight or thinness. I think for the value, people are better off with a Y2P i7 (like I have) for a huge performance boost. So Best Buy has the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro for $999 on Black Friday...But I'm also kinda interested in the Yoga 3 Pro, which is $300 more. Which one should I get?
We want you to compare it with a haswell ultrabook with benchmark scores and battery life test ...?please ..!
The Yoga 2 does not have the yellow problem anymore since the firmware upgrade. So it is a fixable issue...
Hi Really love your review I was interested in this Ultrabook just wanted to ask if you think with would be powerful enough to run the following all at the same time without the machine slowing down 6 web pages, photoshop, outlook, excel & word.
I would like to express some thoughts about ultrabooks :
The target audience for ultrabooks are most likely business class individuals, CEO, Managers Supervisors and in the bracket of 35 to 65 years old.
Caps lock key should have light indicators showing it is activated!.
Consider large size keyboard keys, or atleast add some additionall mm distance with each other keys!.
So if you plan to design ultrabooks or manufacturing the motherboard set, please consider these things.
You forgot about students, or anyone who wants a good portable machine with a good keyboard, screen, battery life and looks (yes they matter
I dig this machine... getting closer to the ideal... hows the build size/dimensions/weight stack up against the mac air?
In a perfect world, the macbook air would get a retina screen and be convertible...
The Spongebob test made me laugh ;)
So the only difference between the yoga 3 11 and the yoga pro 3 is the processor is clocked different? Beside the size of it and the different models.
Great review. I like your reviews better than cnets reviews. They are more accurate and less biased.
The keyboard is disabled after you bend it far enough
aswell as the touchpad huh?
Lisa, should I buy the Lenovo yoga 3 pro or the Lenovo Yoga 3 14?
Which is better? Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 3 Pro, Acer Aspire S7, or that Asus one that is kind of brown-ish. I would like a laptop that I can use for school, Netflix, some games, etc. I'm not looking for a gaming laptop. Thanks!
Damn. If only there was the option of an i5 or i7, this would be my dream laptop. Portable, flexible, well built, Lenovo's reliability, and for once a good screen. But that Core M is just not powerful enough
After comparing, there isn't much of a difference, speed wise, between the i7 and core M
The Yoga pro is a bit 3 megahertz below the macbook air which is clocked at 1.4 gigahertz
I want the other intro back I'm so sad I like the tech sounding music ! 😢
Good machine but has several drawbacks. I desperately want an ultrabook and i'm waiting for the Asus UX305, although yoga's main feature (360 turn) is great and really tempts me.
Hi Lisa I was wondering if you could do a review for the Lenovo Yoga A940 since I know you can't mislead people when it comes to products
Should I get this, the Surface Pro 3, or the Lenovo Helix 2? I want a stylus that would support palm rejection. Any advice?
I kinda wish you would share with us if you knew a new model was coming out I bought a yoga 2 pro a couple months ago.
Can someone explain me differences between all yoga models (yoga, thinkpad and ideapad)? Pls.
Great review 👍☺️
Broadwell? I thought that was set for 2015.
for desktop
Can you do a comparison between the Yoga Pro 3 and the Surface Pro 3 Lisa?
Would this be a good laptop to use if want to be a graphic designer
Mine is Lenovo Yoga 700 with Windows 10. If this is a setting issue and not a corrupted file can you spell out the solution so when I'm forced to restart in safe mode I can follow along?
As usual, fantastic review. I'm debating between this and the Surface Pro 3. Also, wondering if Apple will FINALLY update the MacBook Air next year and add a high resolution screen. Guess I will play the waiting game...
Would you suggest this, or a surface pro 3? Or any other similar device
Thinkpad x1 carbon ultrabook with touch
OR
Yoga 3 pro ?
Please suggest....
Has anyone complained about flashing dots on the screen, mouse pad that gets hijacked? Is this a Lenovo, Windows 10, or ??? Help.
Can't wait for windows 10. Since I've been using the tech preview on my XPS12, the windows 8 start screen on my desktop is starting to bug me :P
I have the yoga 2 pro and the hinge has gotten a fair bit looser under normal circumstances.
Is the keyboard deactivated when in tablet mode? Or can your hand accidentally hit keys?
Great one except one huge fall for me - that small right Shift key. Not only it looks ridiculous to me for design language, but also it is a major downfall for typing convenience.
When will the X1 Carbon refresh become available?
So I'm looking for a laptop to do photoshop and video editing, is this a better value compared to the mac pro retina?
I'm just wondering if it can run League well. Everything else is perfect for me, so I'll most likely buy it.
priorities , i agree
League of Legends? Doubt it because intel M is not a good processor, less for gaming
hmm ok thanks :)
hey, Lisa, would u mind comparing the yoga 2 pro with 4th gen core i5 to the yoga 3 pro with core m in terms of battery, so that i can decide whether the "amazing battery life" the core m should give could compromise with the lack of performance compared to 4th gen cpu! THX!
Theres like 50 credible review out there.... the battery life is the same of not worst.
sry, but i don't understand what does it mean by" the battery life is the same of not worst".
Justin Chan if* typo
It means the battery is not much better than the last model.
Which good laptop Lenovo yoga 2,Y50,Y70 ,Y700 and z510
I don't know why but I'd still prefer the HP Pavilion x360 11/13 or the HP Envy x360.
Well, as of now, my experience in HP is somehow nice. but I also want a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro though. :3
great looking. i didnt like lenovo until recently. and this ine i love and the hinge is brilliant
Hope I can get this soon.
+Dani o.o don't. I have it and it sucks, its slow...
+Z I'm just gonna get an all in one computer cause i don't really like laptops xc
A Bamboo Capture is around $100, so you could get the two together for around $600.
hmmm Okay. thanks, I was thinking of getting a samsung galaxy laptop/tablet. but I'll look into those.
I already have a Toshiba satellite laptop but how would I get my illustrations (art files) to the laptop or better yet into the word document that I want to insert an
illustration into
What's with the giant space between the keyboard and the screen? looks awkward
Do you get the keys engaging whilst acting as a pedestal?
Thank you this was helpful (:
Would you recommend a surface pro 3 for an engineer student?
Has this model been discontinued?
Yes 4 years ago
I can't decide between yoga 3 pro, zenbook ux305ca, or inspiron13 7000?
Acer nitro 5 is better for you.
Nice laptop, great review.
Can I play games on yoga 3 pro and if I can't what do you suggest??? I am searching for light laptop 14" Max and I can play with
What do you think pls respond????? :)
sorry not good for gaming great for student college.
I am looking for a laptop, but I am stuck between a i5 machine with gtx 860m and a i7 machine with Intel graphic 4400, any thought?
GTX 860m if you wanna game on it.
How much does this cost as configured? I didn't catch that. $$$:)
I will undoubtedly upgrade my yoga 2 pro to the 3 XD
Bit thinner, less powerful, more expensive... Yoga 2 Pro > Yoga 3 Pro
Wow, usb charging, quite amazing. But the keyboard is difficult to accept.
so chrome still uses more power than other browsers? I thought they changed that lol
