Ableton Push 3 sounds | MPE Performance (no talking)

  • Hello everyone. Here we are. Ableton Push 3. There's lots to say and share to say the least.
    This is my first performance video with Ableton Push 3. It uses expressive sounds tuned for MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), allowing for legato/glissando/bends/vibrato between notes horizontally as well as vertical slides on individual notes, adding various per-note effects or adjusting global parameters in Live itself. The possibilities here are quite vast, and I've just scratched the surface here, using a mix of new sounds in Live 11.3, as well as some new or customised ones I made myself. Not getting lost in the new possibilities this offers, as well as the totally new experience (and skill) of gliding and sliding fingers polyphonically on Push was a challenge but ultimately it is so exciting to see what the possibilities are here, in terms of expression but also sound design. Each pad is now an XY(Z) pad, hence the name of the video.
    The "Cello" sound I start and end with is a joy, and I like it as it's both expressive and string-like, but also clearly artificial. I do however wish I had edited out some of the detuning it semi-randomly does, which you can hear clearly at the end. I winced at that part somewhat, but it also highlights the nature of the beast, so to speak. That said, playing in tune is generally easy and completely adjustable or even something you can turn off if you wish. The other sounds I chose to express different ways of approaching this new possibility of using sliding gestures to modulate individual notes. After the cello sound it was also time to explore slightly more edgy and unusual textures. This is just the tip of the iceberg and I'm so excited to explore this further. I'll do that in a video Ableton have asked me to make on MPE as well as a new Push Bible course on sound design for Push and MPE.
    I have some thoughts on what Ableton Push 3 means - the headlines - and I've shared them here; • Ableton Push 3: What y...
    I'm also launching new Push Bible courses, there's a teaser here and more info will be found on wrkshp.thinkif...
    Do join the WRKSHP mailing list if you'd like to be kept up to date on Push 3 and more.
    I'll leave this here for now, as it's been a crazy few days to say the least, just after the dust settled on PLAYGRND (not wanting to complain, I'm just zapped). Thank you for joining me here, for the adventure so far, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Push 3.
    Andri
    p.s. no Performance notes in subtitles yet - I hope to once the dust settles!

    Push 3 might not need a computer now but you still need a master like Andri to make it sound like this

    Thanks for this! Love your cinematography and musicianship. Too many videos out there of people just talking for an hour straight about push 3 without even making any music on it. Everyone so caught up in the materialistic hype and forgetting that it’s still US ARTISTS who make the music. A talented producer will make better music with a push 1 than a lousy producer on push 3. Cheers mate !

      Thank you! This is a great question - and it really feels just like that - extra levels/dimensions of things we can do. With that there are also decisions to be made, and it's naturally interesting to know where to start and stop with those. Lots of food for thought already, and I'm really looking forward to making some more music/videos with it!

      @custardweasel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. You need to build a template with the mappings on desktop Live and then you can move it over to Push. I'm doing this with a blackstar Live Logic and it works fine.

    since push 2 also has MPE - are these slide up down left right things are also possible with it? (with push2). currently i am only getting polyphonic aftertouch - nothing more. Thanks!

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  ปีที่แล้ว

      So Push 2 doesn’t really have MPE but it does as you say have polyphonic aftertouch (which is essentially the same as Pressure in MPE).
      That means that slide (up and down) and individual Note Pitch Bend aren’t possible on Push 2.
      That said, polyphonic aftertouch on Push 2 is already really useful and powerful.

    do You tray Push 3 controls in arrangement view? any good?

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey so nothing has changed from push 2 to push 3 regarding arrangement view. There is very little functionality or control. I do have a mini course on wrkshp.eu where I show how to arrange a song using just push however and this might be relevant.

    I could, for the most part, do your performance on my micro freak. At the very least, you could have done some serious pitch shifting/vibrato with a string/woodwind instrument. After all, those are the two elements that make music performance sound highly expressive, as though a human was playing. That is what MPE is trying to emulate, but you failed to show us that much, you know, as the title suggests.
