The floating chamber was invented by David Marshall Williams. AKA Carbine Williams. He also help design the the M1 Carbine rifle. Jimmy Stewart was in a movie about him called Carbine Williams.

It is my understanding that David Williams worked on the Winchester prototype .30-06 rifle i.e., NOT the M1 Carbine. Hollywood can rarely be trusted to tell the truth, just look at the Sergeant Yorke movie.

Hey Mike, It’s me again. Another fine educational and entertaining video. My father hunted squirrels and rabbits with a bolt action open sight single shot 22 that he managed to obtain as a teenager in the middle of the depression. I think about 1934. He only used 22 Shorts. Saw no need for Longs or Long Rifles. Much to my disappointment 😢 by the time I was a teenager. Dad started me with that gun when I was five years old, now over 66 years ago.
Here’s a couple of FYI’s for those who aren’t old gun nuts like me: The M3 45 ACP sub machine gun from WWII aka M3 Grease Gun fired from an open bolt. The floating chamber was invented by David Marshall Williams (1900-1975) aka “Carbine Williams” while serving time for second degree murder in a North Carolina prison for killing a sheriff’s deputy who was raiding his moonshine still. He is better known for his design of the rotating bolt operating system of the M1 carbine also during his prison stay. There’s lots of stuff about him on the internet including the movie about him starring Jimmy Stewart. The Winchester Model 50 semi-auto shotgun used a floating chamber. I had one of the light weight 12 gauge versions of those back in the early 1970’s. It was ok for pheasant or quail hunting but not so good for when you might be shooting a lot of shots in a short time like for doves or trap shooting. I couldn’t get through a box of shells before it would start to jam and need to be cleaned. I was loading with Hi-Skor 700x and Red Dot, so may have had something to do with how much residue those powders left. I couldn’t afford factory ammo so I’ll never know. I traded it for something else and never looked back. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

Quite interesting. Marlin 39A can also use 22 shorts, but they are very hard to find. Beretta made the 950 semiauto pistol in 22 short and .25 acp, and some tests have shown the short in a tiny pistol is more potent than most would imagine.

When I was a kid we mostly shot 22 shorts but I don't remember high velocity shorts. I have no doubt that they were around but the reason we shot shorts was because they were so cheap. We would use lr if we were hunting, to get a little more reach and umph but just plinking it was 22 shorts

I have a pretty large number of 22 short rounds. I have a Beretta semi pistol that shoots only shorts and, of course, lever and bolt action 22 rifles with tubular magazines typically will cycle 22S, 22L, and 22LR just fine. But, I cannot think of any semi auto rifles I have that will cycle 22S. I need to take a fresh look to be sure.

I've craved a 22 short only rifle off and on for years now. A few years ago I was searching used guns for sale online and found a minty FN version of the Browning SA in 22 short only. I believe it was $450-500, or thereabouts. I had the $$, but wasn't exactly flush, so I kept checking inventory, hoping they'd mark it down a bit, until it was gone! I still kick myself over that one.
Great content; I believed you've motivated me to start my search again!

  • @garyK.45ACP

Nice video. Thanks for some great memories. Is that Remington marked "Model 551" or "Model 550-1"? I don't recall a "Model 551". They also made a Model 552 that handled shorts, longs and long rifles, but it was WAY out of the price ball park for ranch families in my rural area.
When I was a kid (early 60s) .22 shorts were cheaper than long rifle ammo. As I recall they were about 40 cents a box/50 and long rifles were about 55 cents/50. That was a big 15 cents for a kid.
The state law at the time (there were no federal laws on ammo sales until 1968) allowed us to buy ammo if we had our parent's permission and my Dad had signed a permission card with the local hardware store. When we bought ammo, if the clerk didn't know us as regular customers, they would get out the file box and look for the index card with our name and parent's signature. We had no ID, of course, so the clerk (if they didn't know us) would ask us to recite the address and phone number on the card.
I had a Remington Model 511 "Scoremaster" bolt action, magazine rifle. It handled .22 shorts, longs or long rifles, but had just a 5 shot magazine. My best friend had the holy grail of boys in the early 60s...A Remington Model 550-1 semi-auto! A semi-auto that actually functioned perfectly with .22 shorts and held nearly HALF a box of ammo in its magazine!
I used my Remington 511 to train all my sons to shoot, and then bought them their own .22 rifles.
I had the Model 511 in my safe until just 2 years ago. It had become my wife's rifle and when she got interested in something more precise, she bought a CZ457 "At-One" and we gave the Model 511 to our oldest grandson for his 12th Christmas. I put a new Leupold scope on it to replace the 1950s vintage Weaver 4X. It is still providing good service to our family.
We had .22 longs at the time also and they were a little more expensive than even the Long Rifle cartridges. I recall about 60 cents/50. So we rarely bought those because...WHY? 🤷‍♂
Longs have pretty much vanished. I haven't seen any in years, except "CB Longs" which aren't the same thing. And even .22 shorts are pretty rare now and cost more than Long Rifle ammo.

I love using 22 shorts from either a single shot or tube fed, like the Henry lever action or old Remington 572 pump. CCI still makes both the 1105 fps hollow-points, which are quite zesty at around 70 ft-lbs energy, and the super quiet 710 fps CBs (only about 30 ft-lb). It's one of the reasons I recommend the Henry 22s. Perfect for quiet plinking or small game, though they are more expensive than bulk 22LR for sure. It's funny too, after shooting a bunch of CB shorts, the high velocity 22LR suddenly sound powerful!

  • @stevenscoville2773

I've had a fetish for old .22's for quite a while. I have a modest collection of rimfire rifles that are all .22 short, long, or long rifle; some of which fire only short, long, or long rifle. I believe it was remington that had the first American rimfire rifle that could take all 3 rounds interchangeably. Probably Pederson but I'm not sure! I didn't bother with the .22 WMR because I wasn't sure how long the ammo would be available. I have al the Winchester models from 1885 onward and many of the Marlins, Remingtons, and Savages. My advice to anyone buying these is if it has a detachable magazine, make sure you get one or more with the rifle as some are very scarce and hard to find as well as expensive these days. Hard to believe that the little 5 & 10 round Winchester mags go for $50-75 now! All of these from 1885-1972 are wood and steel and I let the grandkids shoot all of them!

The tube magazine is great for shorts as it increases capacity, whereas stack or rotary magazines get no advantage. CB shorts are generally quieter than air rifles, but that solid bullet packs more punch than a pellet.

They cost only a quarter. From about 3:30 till dark I could go into the woods and hunt squirrels. It was heaven on earth for me. There was a cemetery nearby, also and I used to hunt squirrels near the grave of the famous Mountain Man Jim Bridger. The soft report of the shorts kept me from getting caught or found out. Interestingly, because of the case capacity of the 22lr is barely used to accomplish the velocity of the bullet, a 22 short can be loaded to match the ballistics of a 22lr.
I grew up with a Model 1906 Winchester (variant of the Model 1890) which was referred to as a "carnival gun" because the shooting galleries in carnivals used to use them. And yes I am old enough to have shot in those old galleries also. (My how times have changed)

When I was growing up in Iowa in the early to mid 1960’s they had shooting galleries at the state fair. They used some small pump action 22 with shorts. The attendant loaded the rifles. They also had shooting galleries that featured what I believe to be original Thompson sub machine guns converted to pneumatic operation firing BB’s . They had an air hose connected to the bottom of the receiver. They were heavy as Hell compared to those 22’s. Those places took a lot of my hard earned paper route money. 😂

    • @c.j.rogers2422

The short can match the velocity of the LR because it's slinging a 29gr projectile, as opposed to the 40gr projectile of the standard LR. This results in substantially less energy, but still plenty for squirrel, rabbit, or head-shot gamebirds. No 22 short could never match the 40gr velocity of even a "standard velocity" LR; I don't believe shorts were ever loaded with 40gr projectiles. They're perfect, though, for what they are.

I wish that would be legal in Hungary to buy semi auto rimfires for hunting. You have to understand the big why first. Without a good reason - must be either hunting or sports shooting (serious requirements for the latter) - you cannot buy a firearm (except muzzle loaders, but cannot buy gunpowder and percussion caps without license only the gun itself). The typical "just for fun" is not a good reason here. Self defense is also not a good reason, except when/if you are a "very important person", but that is politics and better leave alone this topic. So hunting is the more simple way to get a firearm. You do your hunting course and exam, pay the annual "hunting ticket", and you can own and keep at home your firearm. You do not have to belong any "hunting companies" or "hunting parties", as it is an extremely expensive thing. You may can go to hunt if you have a friend in some of the companies and you get invited. You pay your one offs, and that's it. You do not even have to hunt at all, just pay the annual ticket. That's it. But you cannot have any handgun, any semi auto rifle, any firearm having shorter barrel than 45cm (just a barely shorter than 18", so an 18" barrel rifle is fine to have for hunting here). The sports shooting gives you more room to choose firearms - semi autos, handguns, pump action and semi auto shotguns with more than 2 rounds in the magazine - but having way much headache until you make your way to keep some, and even after that. Much strict psychiatric examinations, longer waiting lists (actually you have to have 2 different psychiatric examinations and you have to wait 6 month, or even a year between the two), you have to attend to competitions and have to shoot the requirements (no you do not have to get medal, but you have to show that you able to shoot at some higher level), etc, etc, etc. And unfortunately even .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle semi autos cannot use for hunting. You can hunt with any single shot or repeating rifle just like any big bore ones. But a nice semi auto would be a good tool to shoot jays, magpies, hooded crows, foxes, badgers, raccoons and raccoon dogs and muskrats (these last three even invasive species). How unfortunate...

@Cuccos19 ---> Then call or write your elected representative in the Hungarian government! The Nazis have been gone since spring of 1945, and the Soviets left in '90, or '91. Send him this video showing a man and a woman have fun shooting at targets! Invite your government representative to a shooting range or a hunting trip and teach / show them how to use and like firearms!
Shooting is an Olympic sport. Handgun, Rifle and Shotgun. Are there no Hungarians in the Olympic shooting team? Swiss citizens in the Reserve have military rifles and ammo at home in case the nation is invaded. Every sane person should have firearm and ammo at home. The Police can never be everywhere at the same time.

Try ELEY - Tenex brand made in the U.K. Many Olympic and tournament shooters use the ELEY brand of .22 rimfire ammo.
