The CZ452 American is my rimfire sporter of choice. All the CZ452/455/457 series are excellent

I have a Winchester model 52B I bought around 1993 and a Remington 541T I own several 22 rifles but those are two of the older ones I own that’s no longer made

As I have chimed in on your previous .22 videos, I an also an avid fan of the .22 rifles, in particular those produced prior to 1960. I have a Winchester model 52 in excellent condition with a 3-digit s/n first year production. Everything about it is so robust as to make you think it's a centerfire, including the 28 in. barrel. That model dominated the rimfire competition for years which of course made the Germans go all out to challenge us. Hence the Mauser model ES350B, single shot with a mini mauser action, superb sights etc. Also heavy like the 52 and as you would expect from them in the early 1930's, quality manufacturing. I was a little stunned to find them bringing up in the $4500 price range, I also have a model 75 with both lyman sights and an old weaver scope. Still need a 52 sporter and they come in the A, B, and C models between 1934 and the late '40's and also range between $2500-$4500, so a little steep with so many things going on. They may be a good investment, but I just liked to let my kids and grandkids grow up learning on classic wood & steel .22's. Great videos as always!
I still believe Browning’s Japan Quality , Fit, Finish, & Blueing is unmatched in production rifles. Not to mention their also accurate!

@@jiveturkey9993 I think that just about everything that ever came out of Miroku is excellent, even some of their less valuable models. For example, my old S&W 1000 12g SA that I bought new at probably 18yo, almost 40 years ago. It was on sale for $50 less than the 1100 I intended to buy, and looked about the same to me. IIRC, it cost $299.95. Still an excellent shotgun, one I rarely hear anything about. I don't think that marriage lasted too long.

My "poor man's sporter" is a Winchester Model 69A. It sat in a closet for 35 years yet was stored properly. It's my level of a classy 22. I shoot it and thoroughly enjoy it.
I have a 1968 Weatherby XXII built in italy by beretta. It’s not only beautiful, but is extremely accurate. It’s my favorite rifle in the collection. Would love to put a picture of it on here for you to see. The stock is amazing, and has a incrediable grain pattern. Much better than the standard stock which are still beautiful.

The Winchester model 52’s are great, I have 3 of them. My son and I have been collecting guns for a number of years now and we are always hitting different gun shops in our neck of the woods because you never know what you might stumble upon, just a few months ago we stumbled upon a Browning model 52 Sporter just like yours in like new condition for $400! Talk about a great find. We also own several Winchester model 75’s, one being a sporter too, great rifles indeed.

Quite pleased to hear you mention Weatherby. I own an Italian made mark xxii semi in 22lr and it's a fine rifle. It's not in collector shape but great shape and it's my go to rimfire. Thanks for sharing.
Fine 22's present a significantly broad spectrum for short videos. However, Mike, you are spot on the right guy for the challenge. I am enjoying each episode and remain hungry for the next in line.
As for the 10/22, my son and I each recently detailed one up for ourselves for target work at the range. Ruger surely produces a fine rifle, and the aftermarket is rich with upgrades to suit a person's needs. However an owner chooses to approach their specific rifle, if mine is an indicator, the result is a phenomenally accurate and consistent shooter.
Always interesting and thank you for your videos. I bought a Anschutz woodchucker .22 for my kids way back in the 80’s now my kids and grand kids have learned to shoot with that excellent little rifle. My favorites are my model 39 Marlin and my model 52 both rifles are super accurate.

The Browning Medallion was a beauty. Browning only had limited production of them by Miroku, because they were working on the reintroduction of their “T-Bolt” straight pull rimfire action. Browning felt there would be better sales because of a nostalgia for the FN-made T-Bolts of the late 1960s/early 1970s. The new iteration of the T-Bolt is a really nice rimfire rifle, but expensive; it was introduced in a slack economy and may have done or be doing only so well. My own favorite is the Ruger 77/22 and I’m glad to have acquired one while Ruger was still producing them.
I do have one of those H&R 'break barrel' , it has a beautiful patterned walnut stock, something like 'birds eye maple' , ( I know very little about wood and it's patterns )
The rifle I have came with two barrels, one in .410 the other in.22. I rarely shoot with this one, but it is a nice looking gun.

Oh and Ruger should do a run of no.1's in .22 rimfire, even though the action is a bit massive for that round.

In high school I was on the ROTC rifle team. We competed with Winchester 52D rifles my freshman year. We changed to Remington 40X rifles my sophomore year. Both rifles were great but the Winchester had a superior trigger. Great video...love the .22lr.

A dealer friend of mine, where I pick up my guns, has one of those Stevens (JCH) in Fairly good condition that he took in a few months ago. It even has the retractable sling, intact and working. That's very rare. What an interesting and Sleek design. He likes it because it's different; I keep hoping he'll Tire of it sitting in the case and I can steal it!
I know you'll get to the wonderful Ruger 77/22 series soon enough!

I have an old Remington 341p p for peep sight made in the 1930s very good condition a real shooter ,paid 60 dollars for it.
I was gifted one in 1967. My first .22 still have it,restored.
I love the action on those rifles, I own the same gun, keeping my eyes open for the model 34 as well.
Really good videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge on firearms. I learn something Everytime. I think the rarest firearm I have is a low digit model 100 Winchester, in 308.

Great video Mike. I love the Browning A Bolt rimfire. I would love it even more if I could find one! I remember when Winchester/Browning re released the Winchester 52 about 20 years ago but they are hen's teeth now. One of my many regrets was selling a beautiful Kimber 82 rimfire. All steel with first class checkering on the pistol grip and on the metal but plate. Thanks for sharing!
I have a Weatherby Mark xxii semi auto (Japan model) with the beautiful figured lighter colored walnut stock and rosewood end and cap that is obsolete . I've had it for sometime now and it's in new in the box condition though I have taken it to the range a few times ..it will shoot a 10 shot group at 50 yards using a bi-pod in a group of just slightly larger than a single bullet hole every time, I have heard that the mark xxii is arguably the most accurate .22 of them all and will say it certainly is impressive ..I wish someone would cover the Weatherby mark xxii as you do the arms in your videos ...keep up the great vids I enjoy them all......D.

When I saw the Browning A-Bolt I immediately was reminded of my own T-Bolt, given to me in 1967 and I remember also that my Dad caught hell for spending SO much money; $65.00 US ! The stock came with the same high gloss finish and a decent piece of wood, the straight pull bolt and a very accurate 24" barrel. I would love to see your sample if you are so lucky. Love your mo work, Mike, stay safe, keep smilin'
PS. It Still shoots tiny groups but now scoped for old eyes.

Another GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO, most people don't realize how many different 22lr rifles are out there. You have to consider how long the cartridge has been around, the OLDEST CARTRIDGE unfortunately the early ones used BLACK POWDER so obviously they were detrimental to the barrel and action. Didn't go to non-corrosive till late 1920's-early 30's.🤔😯😮💨. So MOST of the older ones either have HORRIBLE BORES OR HAVE BEEN RELINED.

One thing about the Win 52, Rem 40x, Rem 37 had over all of their lower priced models were the triggers. They went the extra mile on quality triggers. Winchester had several different options. The Kenyon trigger comes to mind. I think Remington may have had the "Mystery Trigger". Another couple of quality .22's were the Browning T-bolt's (USA), and the MAS45 (France). That MAS45 has a massive bolt and receiver for a little bolt action . I have also owed a Hammerli free rifle, several Anschutz"s, BRNO's, CZ's. I had a love affair with .22's. Thanks for the video about .22"s because it tripped my trigger!
I’d love to own a Win 52 sporter repo but my favorite and most accurate is my Anschutz 1710 D KL sporter. Perfection.
Please don't forget about the Cooper M57 Jackson Squirrel Rifle. Yes, they are pricey, but very accurate. Love mine.
Cooper builds some of the best rifles available. I have a .280 Ackley improved with a 25 inch barrel, it drives nails with 150 gr, Nosler BT bullets. I use 57.5 grains of IMR 4350.
I've killed several deer at 450 + yards, one at 618 yareds.

I have a J.C. Higgins Model 30 market and made for Sears.
It has the built in sling.
Very accurate, I think the tube magazine holds up to 16 rounds. I am having some feed and ejection issues so it is a project gun work in progress.
Hope to make it function correctly.
Currently have spent more than it is worth on parts and repairs.

My father has 2 52b and they are very very fine rifles. But as far as intriguing actions go I submit that the Kimber of America hunter to be the finest 22 . They have a little tiny controlled round feed claw extractor. It's like a miniature dangerous game gun. I have 2 and just love them . Accuracy wise though they are not even on the same planet as the model 52s but still a phenomenal and underated 22
Love your videos especially the ones you do on .22s if you have the opportunity you should do a video on Cooeys if you have any or are able to get one, they are big here in Canada where I’m from not sure bout in the US but I think it would be interesting and educational if you have the opportunity! I, too, own a JC Higgins Model 29. It's an under rated, quality made rifle from Hi Standard, Picked it up in early 2021 at a local shop. When I saw the price tag of $125, I could not pay for it fast enough.
You made the right call - a great .22 and at that price....a steal
There are many fine .22 sporters, but the Cadillac lever actions from Marlin, Browning, and Winchester shouldn't be forgotten when it comes to this category!

In my experience they are highly desirable and are not underestimated at all.
Even the (at the time ignored) sort-of copy by Rossi in the early 90s was an excellent & elegant little rifle! There's one standing next to my fringe door presently. How I kick myself for not keeping a 22 mag version of same when I was getting them for free as a dealer back then! They were free for every xx Rossi revolvers sold. I sold a lot of Rossi revolvers. At the time, the dealer cost on one was $99, IIRC, and I think I sold them for $125. Try to find one of that vintage for anything approaching that price today! The new ones are about as elegant as a cinder block, though of fine quality, I'm sure.
I have the JC Higgins model 29.
They were made by Hi-standard but I could find a Hi-standard version so I think they were made exclusively for contract sales.
Maybe they did make the model 29 for themselves at some point but I couldn't find anything.
My 520 didn't have the deflector, I know the 1 you are talking about. Cheers mate

You can really simplify loading tube fed magazines with a device called Spee-D-Loader . Super fast .

I've shot with nothing else but an anschutz 520 auto for thirty odd years, and after a bit of sear work to lighten the trigger I've never needed anything else .22 wise..very accurate, but alas she's nearly worn out now, and I might just buy one of those ball race actioned straight pull rifles to replace her..it's all about accuracy
Can you do a universal rifles video? I say seven mag is ideal at medium plus ranges. I'd also like to say my wife and I both love you videos thank you for the excellent content.
Thank you and your wife for your kind words - and I'll be happy to make a universal rifle video. You're right about the 7 - it is a and always has been a balanced, near perfect, magnum cartridge. I hunted with Remington Reduced Recoil loads in my 7 when I knew the quarry would be close and it was ideal. I could have slipped a full power shell in the chamber and worked at 400 plus yards - that's a versatile cartridge. All the best to you!
I shot some great .22 single shots with peep sights in ROTC in college. Tack Drivers.
The finest .22 rifle I've ever seen ( Much less shot) is my Remington 541T ( the T denotes a target barrel) it's a little heavy but it's a tack driver, I picked it up a few years ago at a now defunct gun Shop and it's so accurate that when I had to sell a few of my guns I couldn't stand to part with it!
I had a Rem 541-T which was nice and accuracy was good but my Anschutz 1710 D KL is a masterpiece. Like comparing a Ford to a Ferrari.
Very few of the videos reviewing .22 rifles mention the remington 40xr . I have wondered why ?
Just a heads up, I had an Anschutz model 520, I had a problem with the receiver breaking in half I'm sure because the bolt slamming into the rear of the receiver. Trigger is beautiful and as you said very accurate.

I have the Anschutz model 300 which is an older version of the 520.
My father bought it for my 16th birthday. That was 52 years ago. The price tag was still on the box. It was $47.00.
I've put thousands of rounds through it and never had a problem.
I have a 3-7x variable scope on it and it's very accurate.
I believe the 520 has a kind of deflector on the ejection port to keep the empties from peppering anyone to your right.
Also a trigger shaped charging handle. My 300 has knurled knob charging handle and was never equipped with that ejection port deflector.
I believe those are the only differences between the two.
There was also a model 470 between these two.
Two of my three j.c.higgins have the nylon sling that retracts into the stock

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I inherited one from my father years ago back in the seventies and I bought the other two somewhere in the late eighties early nineties I paid forty five dollars for one and sixty for the last one in the early nineties and their tack drivers I like them better than the 1022 Wich I didn't care for at all
22 RF's are more popular than ever it seems but I'm disappointed that it's getting difficult to find nice wood and steel models. I have a CZ 457 that is a beautiful, accurate rifle and a little "pricey". Recently I was able to get a used Zastava 22, polished and blued nicely, all steel and a handsome walnut stock. It's also quite accurate and a bargain.

JC Higgen's was sears brand before Ted Williams became their name And from what I've read they were made by High Standard and sometimes Mossberg
Friend of mine had a j.c. Higgins thirty-ought-six bolt-action that was made by fabrique national in Belgium.
I've got three of the j.c.higgins semi auto 22s good accurate little 22s
JCH models were made by several manufacturers.

Can you tell me witch ammo you were using to get good accuracy with the Anschuetz? I have two of them a model 520 and a 522 and had terrible accuracy with every ammo i tested so far.
Great question! I used CCI Velocitor yesterday and found one hole for 10 rounds at 50 yards. IMHO

Maybe i will give it a try the next time i find some Velocitors.

I seen plenty of those Anschutz semi's in the scrap bin, they were terrible rifles. Nothing but trouble, and a real stain on an otherwise excellent gunmakers copybook.
Japanese made rifles are excellent , just imagine a Japanese person at the factory putting all he's got into a product that he knows he can't buy.
Fix the rug and make it lay down.
Those guns are all extinct. They stopped making them years ago and you can't find them anywhere. I guess we'll just have to stare and imagine.

Thank you - great advice. The broken firing pin. So far I've lead a charmed life - dry fired countless rimfires with no issues and no broken firing pins. Just lucky I guess. I did test an old Stevens the other day - not worth much - I dry fired 20 times in a row - prepared for a broken firing pin. Nothing happened. Maybe some models are more sensitive than others. I have a center fire single shot and the manufacturer wrote "Don't dry fire or the pin will break." One day at the range a friend was shooting it and remembered not to dry fire except once; the pin didn't break; but that doesn't mean it won't break - it just didn't that time. Anyway, it's an interesting area of rifle function that I've heard most of my life. I don't mind if a pin or other part fails as I like working on guns and making parts; so far no rimfire firing pins needed. Still, with so many people believing they break - there must be some truth to it. Better safe - you're right. No need to dry fire really. All the best for 2024!
