I have had the MG for over a year, and some of what you say is correct some is just plain wrong. The only battery heater available is designed to raise the battery temperature in Nordic conditions , not to optimise charging. I have never waited more than 30 seconds for the heater to clear any ice and it certainly DOES NOT take 20 miles off the range. Deep snow requires the usual brush. You never need to drive with seat heaters on after initial warm up, just use the heater. MG Pilot is really good with lane following and intelligent cruise control. The pano roof with powered blind is really good. One pedal driving in 90% of the time is fine, at most needed a touch on the brakes in the final few feet is all that is required. BTW my other car is a Leaf.
Bought mine in January, and commuted through that wonderful weather at the start of the year. I'm relying on public charging, so I'm charging on the way home after work. Even with the lousy weather, at motorway speeds, and with the cabin comfortably warm, I was easily getting 80 miles before it would prompt me to find a charger (prompt, not take a hissy fit and restrict power). With the increase in temperature, that's only getting better. 3+miles/kWH is now easily achievable without sacrificing any of the comforts. I spent months doing research before making the switch from ICE to BEV and cost aside, because no new car will ever be universally affordable, the changes necessary to accommodate it have been minimal. Is it the most impressive out there? Maybe not. There's a few things that could be improved. Is it good value? Well, mine may not last 20 odd years, like an old Audi I was driving...but it also didn't cost anything like as much, so I don't expect it to. I suppose I'll need to do maintenance on it, but I don't think spending 3 or 4 times as much on a Tesla would have stopped that being a necessary part of vehicle ownership. Haters gonna hate. People can find fault with every vehicle out there, the perfect vehicle doesn't exist. But good vehicles are plentiful, and this is one of them.
A few inaccuracies... Rapid charging tops out at 75kW. The heater is incredibly quick, under 2 minutes to defrost on every morning I've used it, and if you switch to Eco drive mode it cuts the heater power consumption by 50%. Smart charging is a doddle with the Ohme or Zappi solutions.
Agree - good car that does what it says on the tin. Nothing spectacular, but highly specified and all round excellent value for money. After a year of ownership I'd recommend the ZS.
Great value EV. We've had ours since Oct 2020 and with 7,000 klms besides a couple niggles and a steering fix we're very happy. The ZS EV makes advocating for EV's much easier, even here in Australia.
I'm a car salesman in Belgium and we sell Hyundai and MG. We've been selling MG since the beginning of 2020 and I can honestly say there's nothing wrong with the ZS. From all the sold ZS EV we haven't had 1 with trouble apart from a few software updates, which is positive in my opinion. The car itself drives really smooth and indeed it has some negative points, such as the steering wheel which you can't adjust in depth and the infotainment system which is a bit slow and clunky but if that's all that's wrong with the car I say you're still buying a really affordable electric SUV with decent range and great warranty!
Might not be the fastest and the smoothest etc, however for the price, the size, the spec and kit is really impressive, with a nice feel with (the added fake leather etc heated seats etc.) Compared to rivals. Cars like this are cars that will help the normal average person and average wage packet convert to electro power. When need to remember what the money gives you for a brand new car with a good safety rating as standard.
I have had mine for nearly a year and a half, I don’t have a charger at home, and the trickle charger has served me fine. Never been caught out or run out of charge, on average travel about 100 miles a day. So a year and half later I have experienced zero problems, had a full service which cost just £125 plus a free teddy bear! I am hitting exactly what it says on the spec at about 170 miles distance, and this has not reduced in the slightest. Winter time this reduced to about 150 on a full charge but this is with wipers, Lights and heating. The level of comfort is better than the A-class I had (my opinion) I’v got the higher spec and it is worth every penny. Surprising how responsive it is, accelerates pretty fast for what it is. The kers is actually very effective but is not active when it’s fully charged. The smart pilot is pretty decent, on cruise control you can set the distance between you and the car in front so can get a good experience. The only down side are the dongs and warning noises, lots of safety features but have audio warning which you end up turning off. Iv always drove mercs so this was a very random purchase which made no sense, but honestly, I have no regrets, and have no plans to return back to the internal combustion engine and if MG keep making decent and affordable cars like this then I probably won’t return back to those over priced manufacturers.
MG has been largely ignored by the press and journalists despite being the best value electric car for the last 18 months. The early reviews were not very kind as the car had some quirks, but a software update has taken many of those away and it's now a strong contender. The MG5 might look boring, but would make an ideal 'Uber' or airport run taxi (when we get back to using airports!).
Yes they are good value indeed. MG5 looks not really good but generic like this ZS. Not in a bad way though. I think they do what it says, drive electric in an easy way.
Agree! You have to watch reviews from actual owners, not journos paid to either be positive or negative depending on the largest $. After 7,000 klms we're still happy. Here's our 2 week review th-cam.com/video/PiuM9ldkFaQ/w-d-xo.html
You can buy home chargers that have an app so you can schedule the charging time for this vehicle and take advantage of cheaper night time electricity rates.
You have made a mistake about pre heating the car ,you can by going out to the car and switching it on to ready and turning the heater or demisting on then you can get out and go back indoors and have a coffee. Also you would not lose 20 Miles while it is precondition the car as you would only be doing it for a few minutes.
The battery doesn't heat up on a standard home AC charge. There's an update in Norway where the driver can select it manually where they run at very sub-zero temperatures. Also bend your knees for the charge port, it's better for your back ;-)
Reply to Twitty Camies. Yes, both of the chargers supplied with my MG are 3 pin type 2 chargers. In my comment I mistakenly referred to the one shown as a 15kw, but it is actually a 15 amp one and the other one is a 7.5 amp one. The slow charger or Granny charger is the 7.5 amp one. The one shown by Nicki Shields is the 15 amp one and it's clearly marked on the back.
The central screen an afterthought? At least it’s been considered when the dash was designed unlike other more expensive cars that looks like the screen was stuck on with a bracket. Don’t understand why everyone keep harking back to the 60-70’s. MG’s if I’m correct started out modifying Morris Oxfords and not 2 seater sports cars.
love my ZS EV had it over a year now and wouldn't change back to an ICE car. I live in London, have no off road parking and am finding street charging no issue at all. I even took it in a 1400 mile Euro road trip (while we were still permitted) and it coped just fine. You can pick a new one up from about 20k on Auto Trader. The only other electric car that meets this for value is probably the ZS EV's big brother, the MG 5 EV
We agree! 7,000 klms since purchase in Nov 2020 (first boatload to Australia) and love it. Our 300 klm roadtrip from Brisbane to Byron Bay return in a single charge is here th-cam.com/video/lIMQXWVz9qM/w-d-xo.html
You're right it's not a real MG nor a MG that many remember. It's NOT even a British car. However the new ZS (Crossover) EV has significantly better build quality and reliability. The only thing that makes the "Chinese ZS" British are styling inside out and the MG badge.
Value is great, had mine since July and am very happy with it. I would have paid extra for a bigger battery pack if it had been an option. As with all EV's its quiet and smooth. We only home charge on cheap electric. Costs around £15 per month. Previous RAV4 cost £180 per month. Build quality is very good for the price. I agree with most of the negatives, such as app, heating, and infotainment, given all that i still prefer it to the RAV4 and the CRV we had before. As soon as my solar panels are installed next month it will be free to charge.
Sorry have to totally disagree with what you have said about the heaters and defrosting, in the hardest frosts this winter the car de-frosted within one and a half minutes, the longest time covered in snow was three minute, heater are amazing, car was also fully warm within minutes. The regen braking....I one peddle drive all the time you sure you had it in the highest setting because if I take my foot off the peddle its like having your foot on the brake! And it's fast!! put your toe down in Sport mode and you are pushed back in the seat, and it will do 100mph !! They truly are an amazing car.
I have had one for 7 months now and it is good value. I listen to the same radio station and usually drive to places I know so the infotainment system doesn't bother me. I am charging for 4 hours overnight at cheap rate using the timer on my Zappi so having a timer on the car would just duplicate that function. Regen 3 is fine for one pedal driving.
Unfortunately, this car shows exactly what happens when a car is built to price. Checking out the uploaded videos of people looking for rust underneath their ZS EVs you very quickly notice an almost complete lack of proper rust-proofing. Maybe the parts are coated in production with some sort of special paint applied in a special way but it seems that the manufacturers haven't taken account of the amount of salt that gets laid on British roads during the winter. I bought my Peugeot 307SW brand new in 2007 and there's not a trace of rust on it. The reason? During production, as standard, underneath, apart from the fully dipped anti-rust paint, it received a full underside coating of some sort of rubberised coating with all enclosed spaces being full wax treated. The double benefit being that not only is the rust kept at bay but road-noise is reduced quite considerably.
Hi Ray, we agree there could be some more thought regards market/ country specific additions. MG should support dealers to add this to suit each local market. UK needs better under body rust protection. Australia needs window tinting included. Overall however we think the ZS EV is the best value EV currently available, at least in Australia, and are happy owners after 7,000 klms.
The chargepoint may not be the most elegant solution, but you soon get used to it without having to bob down. Agree that MG should include the type 2 cable, rumourmill has it that some dealers do or have done from time to time. As others have said, Ohme charger (and now others) works fine for programmable charging. Also agree that it's a shame there's not a heat pump. Hopefully the refresh will rectify that and many of the other little gripes. Perfectly satisfied with my 2019 model though, especially after software updates. :) Eco will give you 40 miles over sport mode, which personally I find will take my face off if I'm not careful. We aren't all used to test driving iPaces and tesla's though.
How is the 12v battery charged? From the HV battery. When does HV battery charge the 12v battery? While driving. What did you say about not affecting range? I think it does.
@@casperhansen826 the 12v system is constantly charged from the HV battery thru the Dc to Dc converter so no additional strain is put on the HV Battery by the heated seats.
What happens if you break the flimsy charging port cover? How much does it cost ? Is it readily available ? Are replacement parts affordable and available ?
It would be nice to have an app and/or Timed charging but I got an Ohme charger with ours which can be used to time yours charges, it also can be set to charge at times when electric is cheaper. We love the car an absolute bargain!
Didn’t realise how difficult the front charger was for left handed people facing a right handed camera! 🙈🙈🙈Love my ZS EV. There is no problem smart charging at home and don’t drive an EV with normal heating or air con off when you need it. The sport mode does change steering and acceleration as does Eco mode.
We are looking to get one to commute 50 miles a day. Good range and about £16 to charge to 100%. With a range of around 135 miles, I’m looking at spending £50 per week. Much cheaper than trains or a petrol variant. With a 7 year warranty, I’m not complaining.
I am still waiting for my electric car! I tested the car with it's full spec, loved it! Then informed I can only get it in black! Apparently a fire broke out in a factory that manufactures chips for many production factories! The MG ZS I purchased was £21 000 with all the reductions that came off, then I was informed that I do not get the reversing camera, no leather seats, no sat-nav, no roof bars etc! Could I test drive one - no they are all sold? So to those of you reading this comment - you better act quick as their prices are going to increase! OH by the way - There is a space in the centre council which your biscuit's will fit under! The car does not have a spare - quick foam connector re-inflation kit supplied, deep boot can be adjusted to a shallow boot.
When I bought my ZS EV in Australia I got 2 chargers with it. The one you showed and said was the granny charger is in fact the 15kw one and the other one the 7.5kw one is the granny charger, which takes about 15 hours to fully charge.
I know that the car can not charge the batteries at full speed when the battery is very low or close to full, but 15 hours to fully charge a 45 kwh battery, using a 7,5 kwh charger seems wrong. Maybe you are referring to a 3,6 kwh charger ?
I've had mine a year and it's been fantastic. Quick, smooth, nearly silent, and costs pennies to run. I use it as a driving instructor car and it's been fantastic.
Around town I'm seeing 175 summer miles and 160 winter. Motorway speeds will reduce that, and unwise use of the heating system will reduce range further.
Good, informative video! Thank you. I really really like this car for its price point. I drove it for a week in Australia and loved it; apart from some of the software niggles and satnav mistakes. As a Tesla owner, I think the MG ZS EV is value-for-money and has features that even my Model S does not have such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors, great all-round visibility, heated seats, and rear window wiper. Also, the 7-year full warranty is fantastic! I consider the MG ZS EV to be an ideal second EV for me; and I also recommend it to anyone who is considering an affordable family EV.
I do find the difference between the three modes. Sports - Sharpened throttle response and heavier steering, Normal - Not so responsive throttle response (a bit of delay under mid acceleration) and normal & comfortable steering, and finally the Eco Mode - The least throttle response. To my surprise it's a great commute vehicle. Overall I find the MG ZS EV is not only cheap for a brand new EV but also cheerful yet semi elegant not like old grey Japanese nor Korean cars back in 80s or even 90s.
Enjoying since early November. It is the best thing that happened to me in 2020 (or most of the last 5 years). Fantastic car! It is perfect for one foot driving btw...
An EV tends to be c£10k more than petrol/diesel equivalent. But factor in no road tax, cheap servicing (my MG EV first year service is £96 and that includes 1 year AA membership), cheap fuel (c£250 for 7500 miles) .... the MG has a 7 year warranty, it's smooth, comfortable, reliable, versatile. No complaints here.
Most people would use their smartphone for navigation via the entertainment system and have apps on their phone that show the closest public EV charging locations.
It's a bit sad we don't get an app here, but mostly because India, Thailand and China all get the app but the UK doesn't, crazy decision, particularly since the Indian version's default language is English.
That charging flap has to be the worst piece of design in a long time. Why on earth didn't they hinge it along the bottom to make access to the charge socket considerably easier???
@@ElectricCarAustralia The MG5 also has climate control, the ZS EV for some strange reason only have a unregulated aircon, like cars had, 20 years ago.
Type 2 charge cable comes standard here with the car, also charger and installation is standard with the car for free. It's just in uk its not. By the way the maximum range is 300km.
In terms of current EVs, good value. I do have a problem with the naff MG branding though, I'd honestly prefer it if they came in with a "new Chinese built car" approach. It has nothing to do with MG heritage so why stick that badge on? It is like wearing fake bling,..yuk!
I own one after owning a few Zoes. The car is currently back in the dealership after having charging issues and discharging the 12v battery. They tried to fix the charger after a week, but it came back with coolant leaks and more charger issues.Think very carefully before ordering the ZS EV as it's cheap for a reason. It's not reliable.
I agree. No heatpump for heating the car, no automatic climate control, only unregulated aircon, that many report is fiddley and need "constant" adjustment. Also, software updates for the car is not possible via the internet or via USB dongle, only possible to go to the dealer and pay for these and no app support.
I do like this channel but I find it funny what is often pointed out or thought we all need. Could be because I own a ZS EV but I'm not bothered by things it has or dose not have. I never had an app for an ice car, I don't use car play or android auto, timed charging will be done from the wall box when I get one and I've never seen a petrol car road test mention the robustness of its filler cap. I've never had trouble finding the connection or lost 20 miles de icing but some won't like flicking heated seat button on and off but again I don't drive with a hat on because it's got a heater and I paid for a comfortable car to drive in comfort. Always good to see MG given a good all round positive reviews hopefully we will see more with new models launched. Also good to watch Nikki back at the formula E this weekend.
@@oliverstemp9132 we all move differently or don't have the dexterity so I see what you mean. With fuel it's universal so never mentioned but EVs manufacturers put them anywhere, the flap won't fall off though so why Nikki wobbled it around haha.. I'm going to break mine now I've said that.
The MG ZS warranty does not cover everything for seven years, the 12 volt battery is only covered for one year as plenty of owners on the MG electric vehicles Face book forum have found out at their expence ,As for the heated seats if you are driving in Eco mode the seats are at a comfortable heat setting as they don't get too hot.
I've had one 4 months not had a great time, 163 range is miles off literally, I have been getting between 90-100 miles per full charge in the cold weather, its a nice cabin a solid car but the range is terrible, Also there aren't enough charge points around yet and the ones that do exist it's 50/50 wether they are working, I'm getting rid il come back in 3-4 years by then there will be 500 range cars.
Its had all the latest updates, got a 7kw homecharger installed etc, I've gave it another crack after updates but my return wasn't any better, charged last week to 89% Went on a 70 mile round trip had nothing left when I got home, this is driving at 65-70 motorway in ECO mode with kers3 on, sorry but not keeping this car when more and more EV cars coming out doing 250miles plus, by 2023 the range on these things will be 400+ affordable anyway. Not getting stuck with an EV with 130 ish range when it's nice.
@@MrJEDIJORDAN You do seem to have a problem. What does the dealer say? At one stage I had a problem in that it would charge so far then switch off charging. That issue seems to have gone now and all is fine. A suggestion is that when the car has stopped charging, unlock the car then lock again and see if it starts recharging again.
"...SUVs for everyday uses" Well, there's your problem, right there. We have been trained to buy vehicles as fashion accessories, to tell the world "this is who I am". Bigger car = "more important person inside!". Because no-one needs an SUV for "everyday uses" -- unless you drive over fields to get to your local supermarket/school/railway station, hauling a wardrobe every time. We should value frugality and efficiency -- and demonize profligacy -- before we irrevocably damage our living space... in the name of vanity. I do not know how we change our culture to accomplish this.
@@electricscootersworld3296 the Maxus e deliver, Roewe marvel X etc. I understand the approach of selling at a price point below competition but I think it'll only work as long as the EV second hand market remains buoyant. Although it's too their credit they've not gone full Dacia with the spec. Particularly with regards to safety.
Not good for long journey. Only for commuting locally up to 60 miles one way. 200 miles trip takes nearly 5 hours. Designed for hot climate, not good for cold or winter. Not good Faux leather, seat heater too hot.
In-depth review my a##. She complains about the steering wheel not having front and back adjust - she can achieve the outcome with the electrically adjustable seats. The only decent bit of the review was when she demonstrated cup holder.

Totally not true, pal! Ever seen one, let alone driven, or owned, one? I If, by any chance you have, name one thing that is actually ‘horrendous’ on a car built by a company to whom both VW and GM trust their Asian market manufacture! If you just don’t like it ‘because it’s Chinese’, then have the xenophobic honesty to say so.

Hi. Can you tell the car to only charge to a certain percentage? Thanks.
We aren't all used to test driving iPaces and tesla's though.
the ZS's sucess just goes to prove that EVs can be cheaper and still ok and dont need 800miles of range for most people.....
Audio levels are all over the place, especially around 8:50
Its really strange that MG owners in Thailand have app for their car but nowhere else it seems
maybe chinese app fear?
You gotto thank European GDPR for this. Everyone loves GDPR until they find out the downsides.
Heated seats are powered from the 12v battery not the HV Battery so does not affect range.
How is the 12v battery charged? From the HV battery.
When does HV battery charge the 12v battery? While driving.
What did you say about not affecting range? I think it does.
@@casperhansen826 Completely right!! ( But not much, maybe 100W each seat)
Is it me or is this video a bit on the quiet side? Sorry the video is not very Electrifying.
Then gets bloody loud at 8:45 Someone needs to equalise the sound level.
Can you charge it while the car is on (sorry if that’s a silly question)
Yes.
@@ElectricCarAustralia thank you, needed to know as well, buying a 2nd 1
Would be nice to know about features like: The audio system, rear folding seats, rear seating space/legroom etc., too
It would be nice to have an app and/or Timed charging but I got an Ohme charger with ours which can be used to time yours charges, it also can be set to charge at times when electric is cheaper.
So do we. 😄
MG dose bring something new on the market this year, and looks amazing, hopefully they can still keep the price.
We are looking to get one to commute 50 miles a day. Good range and about £16 to charge to 100%.
With a range of around 135 miles, I’m looking at spending £50 per week. Much cheaper than trains or a petrol variant.
With a 7 year warranty, I’m not complaining.
Does anyone do your sound engineering? There are three different sound levels in the first couple of minutes.....
She showed 3 pin to type 2 aka granny charger.
I know that the car can not charge the batteries at full speed when the battery is very low or close to full, but 15 hours to fully charge a 45 kwh battery, using a 7,5 kwh charger seems wrong.
Maybe you are referring to a 3,6 kwh charger ?

Around town I'm seeing 175 summer miles and 160 winter. Motorway speeds will reduce that, and unwise use of the heating system will reduce range further.
@@corradoboy thanks
It is perfect for one foot driving btw...
did she say 163 mile range?
How many average families can afford EV cars for £25k+ the prices are not affordable !!
A Ford Focus ST Line is a £25k car these days, and that needs £1500+ of fossil fuel every year on top.
@@corradoboy That is the price for a top of the range a focus Zetac is about 16K
Have a look at Ford's website, Focus starts from £22,210.
@@vc2616 Zetec is entry level now, the ST Line is in the middle. The ZS is amazing value
Does the sat nav still only show petrol stations but not ev charging points?
Most people would use their smartphone for navigation via the entertainment system and have apps on their phone that show the closest public EV charging locations.
The current mapping does show charge points, this press car has not been updated.
It's a bit sad we don't get an app here, but mostly because India, Thailand and China all get the app but the UK doesn't, crazy decision, particularly since the Indian version's default language is English.
It’s to do with data protection rules
After the craziness around making a boogie man out of Huawei. You get what you deserve.
Thank GDPR for this. People think everything about GDPR is positive.
Neither does Australia.
How far are you going to get anyway? Why do you need a heated seat or steering wheel? Doesn't look like a really cold day?
If they put the long range battery from the mg5 estate they would make it much more practical
Your picking stupid faults , I own one it’s a great car I wouldn’t change it for anything else
Best ev for daily use...
That charging flap has to be the worst piece of design in a long time. Why on earth didn't they hinge it along the bottom to make access to the charge socket considerably easier???
They quickly took the feedback with the MG 5.
@@ElectricCarAustralia The MG5 also has climate control, the ZS EV for some strange reason only have a unregulated aircon, like cars had, 20 years ago.
@@JohnDoe-bd5sz Yep, dissapointing in ZS.
Good presentation, but you MUST fix your vox audio! :)
Type 2 charge cable comes standard here with the car, also charger and installation is standard with the car for free. It's just in uk its not.

@@Electrifyingcom the glass jar, a touch of class, and its reveal.... Electrifying!
In terms of current EVs, good value. I do have a problem with the naff MG branding though, I'd honestly prefer it if they came in with a "new Chinese built car" approach. It has nothing to do with MG heritage so why stick that badge on? It is like wearing fake bling,..yuk!
Wait for the BYD with their Han model. It'll definitely tick your request!
Saw a review of that recently….. very impressed …. But I can’t imagine it will sell in the uk.
The MG does have a heat pump... and a Bosch one at that...
Otherwise, a great review. Thank you.
But it does not use it to do cabin heating, the heating is purely resistive....Meaning 1kwh power in = 1 kwh heat coming out.
160 mile range I couldn’t get to the coast and back with worries and stress.
Not overly impressed, even for the price. Too many convenience factors missing. Range is very mediocre. Overall, not for me at all.
I agree. No heatpump for heating the car, no automatic climate control, only unregulated aircon, that many report is fiddley and need "constant" adjustment.
Also, software updates for the car is not possible via the internet or via USB dongle, only possible to go to the dealer and pay for these and no app support.
Review of an old 20 plate without up to date software.
Had my MG for a year, charge point is NOT a problem! Wow, nit picking at its best, won't be watching this channel again!
The audio is so bad on this that it is almost unwatchable. This is not really a review. Where to put your biscuits? I have some ideas.
That is a really bad design for a charge port though. It's worth noting because it's an important part of the ownership experience
One for the algorithm.
I think most car manufacturers only give 1 year's warranty for their 12 volt battery.
Who cares about the 12 Volt battery? Everyone can buy a new one easily compared to the big, high voltage EV battery.
I've had one 4 months not had a great time, 163 range is miles off literally, I have been getting between 90-100 miles per full charge in the cold weather, its a nice cabin a solid car but the range is terrible,
Also there aren't enough charge points around yet and the ones that do exist it's 50/50 wether they are working, I'm getting rid il come back in 3-4 years by then there will be 500 range cars.
There have been problems charging look on the forum on here it can bee rectified
Its had all the latest updates, got a 7kw homecharger installed etc,
I've gave it another crack after updates but my return wasn't any better, charged last week to 89%
Went on a 70 mile round trip had nothing left when I got home, this is driving at 65-70 motorway in ECO mode with kers3 on, sorry but not keeping this car when more and more EV cars coming out doing 250miles plus, by 2023 the range on these things will be 400+ affordable anyway.

I’m thinking of one of these
"...SUVs for everyday uses" Well, there's your problem, right there.
No but some families can only afford one vehicle and that maybe an suv as well as daily commuter
