100%. He walks around with a weird swagger that I have to wonder if he uses in real life? Maybe it's just how he *has* to walk because of his musculature? He looks like my He-Man action figure I had in the 80s, only not nearly as manly. 🤣😂

Point Break. Red Dawn. Road House. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (even if Swayze was in that one)..I think we have enough evidence that you can’t recapture what Patrick Swayze brought to the table. That mix of athleticism, goofiness, attractiveness, sensitivity and charm is hard to replicate. Only maybe Kurt Russell and Keanu can bring those kinds of combinations, but not all at the same time like Swayze. He was the right actor at the right time for a particular kind of movie, I don’t think we can quite recapture

I think there's a big problem with movies today that doesn't get talked about enough. Most movies today are made for critics first. The og Roadhouse (along with other 80s classics like Commando, Bloodsport, the Troma movies et ) was made for it's audience, criticism be damned. In fact, a lot of movies were unapologetic f' you's to movie critics. We need more of that. So since I had never seen the original Roadhouse, we did a double header starting with the new Road House 1st and then the OG - the new one was fun, but then watching the OG it was unbelievable how different and how superior it was. Jake is a great actor, and very charismatic, but he couldn’t come close to the charm and sexiness of Swayze, and the new Road House was completely undone by whatever cartoon Conor McGregor was in.
And I actually disagree with Dan that the OG Road House wasn’t to be taken seriously - the villain is the poster child for Violent Greed, and the sadness Swayze felt at his best friends demise was palpable. I absolutely loved it….the OG one, that is. The new one? Eh, it was ok.

I just watched this last night and found it quite awful. The action was horribly digital looking. Strange cuts, dizzying camera work, and hits that clearly do not make impact. The one thing this movie had to deliver on was done so poorly. I thought Gyllenhaal was actually pretty one-note in this. I didn’t like his character or find him charismatic at all, he actually verges on psychotic near the end, almost channeling his Nightcrawler persona. He delivers some Marvel level one liners at the end that felt so tonally jarring. All the characters are paper thin, and it doesn’t feel self aware the way the original did with how over the top it was. Conor McGregor feels entirely pointless in this film, and his performance is probably one of the worst I’ve ever seen in a film. I finished the movie and forgot nearly all of it. It lacked entertainment value and the only enjoyment my friend and I got out of it was laughing at how bad the action and dialogue was. No idea why Gyllenhaal signed on to this garbage

Casting Conor McGregor for this was a huge mistage 😞 The dude has lots of talents, but acting is not one of them.
Plus all the CGI, fake one shots and over designed actions scenes are soooo out of place here 😞 And it’s a shame because character building, relationships and some of the fight choreography and cinematography is interesting.
Unfortunately it’s the same problem, as with most US action movies nowadays- they are making action scenes waaay to big and spectacular which in a small story like this makes it all unbelievable and dumber than it has to be.

it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it came out that some executive at Amazon, who'd never saw Roadhouse but new the basic plot, came across a generic action movie storyline about a guy hired to protect a Bar and decided to change a few names and call it a remake.
they story is a basic ripoff of about a hundred Westerns (which they even reference in the movie), as well as about a thousand different action movies, especially the whole "Fighter who accidentally killed someone and regrets it" thing which has been used relatively recently in Hard Target 2 & Undisputed 4.
it's an enjoyable movie, but calling it Roadhouse does nothing but get it unfavourably compared to a much better film.

The fights (in this movie), especially the speed of the strikes, are too slow for mma/bjj fans. You can tell the writers hadn't had a history of watching mma fights, boxing matches, kickboxing, muay thai, & even wrestling, to realize the importance of integrating the speed of realistic strikes (& feints), (& grappling techniques), as well as the extraordinary athleticism [and fight strategy], of the fighters in those arts (anybody remember "Little Evil's" 12-6 elbow to the top of skull knockout?) Izzy/Anderson Silva/Rampage/Chael/Chuck Liddel/Jon Bones Jones/Wonderboy/Korean Zombie/Bisping/GSP/Mighty Mouse/ Khabib/Cormier/Miocic/Usman/Hughes/BJ Penn/Randy Couture/Ngannou/Tito Ortiz, the list of extraordinary fighters & incredible fights just goes on, and on, and on, there's so much to draw from, and they used so little of all of that for the fight scenes, that it was disappointing.

There's a certain cache that people often over look when it comes to certain eras of entertainment... the 80s/early 90s have that "this is ridiculous but damn im having a good time" cache when it comes to action movies.
48 hours, lethal weapon, Rambo, Beverly hills cop... making them today would just end up coming of as generic simply because the era CALLED for the style of film. 1. They handled this cage fighter like he a cross between Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne.
    2. The thugs and bikers act like video NPCs.
    3. Why make this guy a one-man-army and give him the backstory of a cage fighter? UFC fighters aren't super heros.
    4. He's a brand new bouncer and the drug lord is treating him like he's law enforcement.
    5. Why is he so casual about dealing with actual drug lords? Bar fights, yea. But going up against the biggest drug lord in the state, alone, and so casually... No.
    6. Felt more like 2015 action-comedy spoof at times.
    7. This was a Scooby-Doo plot, basically.
    8. McGregor...
    9. Should've just set it in the 80s and then it would have felt like it was natural.
    10. Please don't start a franchise from this...

In the original Dalton is a sort of warrior poet type, capable of huge violence but who prefers to avoid it. He's also a cooler - not a bouncer. This version is just some mook whose good at violence and has zero knowledge about how to keep a bar secure and does nothing to train his staff. Spoilers below.
Spoilers: Also there is no bear, no throat scene, no real relationship with the doctor, pain does hurt him, the road house itself is a rubbish set that looks silly, he doesn't meet the villain for ages, either the muscle one or the 'boss', who in this film isn't actually the boss, just his son. You never see the boss. No-one is someone's every Saturday night or on a break. The music is ok but not as iconic as the blind guy who was quite well known in that scene and actually interact with Dalton because they knew each other.
On the whole, this is a hard pass for me. Bits of it were good, it looks pretty, some of the fight scenes were okay, but overall a total waste of time and money.

I find Doug Liman's comments interesting in view of the lack of a theatrical release. Maybe he was expecting (or was promised by) Amazon / MGM to treat the movie something similarly to the way they treated Air about a year ago, which did pretty respectably i think in the theatrical market before going to streaming after a month or two. But since Air, i don't think any Amazon / MGM movies have had a significant wide theatrical platform (apart from American Fiction, which was always positioned as their awards contender).
So it begs the question : did Amazon / MGM rethink their overall theatrical strategy after Air, or is it just that Liman had more faith in Road House than the studio did?
    Thanks for the review Dan.

Never saw the original but I did really enjoy this remake. But of course I don't need every film that I watch to be the best thing I've ever seen. It was entertaining. The story is simple but effective and the fight scenes were great. Conor McGregor can't act, but let's be honest, none of us are going to say that to his face. And yes, Jake Gyllenhaal was absolutely the best part of the film.

Just got done watching the original (finally after all these years!) and this remake and I enjoyed the original immensely, both the good and the bad aspects of it. It’s not an Oscar worthy classic but it is a fun cheesy 80’s action flick and definitely one of my personal cheesy favorites that I’ll be rewatching occasionally.
Remake on the other hand was a remake in all the bad ways. It was the same movie for most of it but it just didn’t have any of that 80’s magic. There were small changes done with the remake and all of them were things that worked less when they were changed or those changes felt just completely pointless. We didn’t even get the awesome rock that the original had. That one had great and recognizable songs while this version got barely anything. And most of the acting was very weak. Conor McGregor was really bad but at least he was bad in a funny and goofy way, unlike everyone else (except Gyllenhaal). He was one of the best things about this remake in a so bad it’s good way. It’s just too bad that his character was so insignificant to the overall story. He could and should have just been some goon that Magnussen hired.
Overall it’s much like Dan said, this is yet another one of those reboots that will probably be forgotten about in a few months while the original will still be remembered years from now as a cult classic like how it is remembered today. 80’s was a magical time for movies that shouldn’t have worked half as well as they ended up working because somehow they were elevated by the 80’s cheese and you just can’t recapture that today, no matter how you try.
P.S. Great review Dan! I felt it was very accurate and fitting, just like always.

This is a great summary. Also, the romance in this remake was lukewarm at best, camera angles confusing and terrible cgi, I guess we can't take it that seriously. You're spot on about the music. It was one of the main characters of the original that was very low key and forgettable in the remake. That and the character development and the action gave the original a gritty but slick edge. The camera shots (panning vertically) were also a lot better in the original too.

This movie without a star like Jake had to be a no-go, but with him, I think it´s watchable.
It has some good scenes, not mindblowing but ok. It´s a Statham-movie for me, with a better main-actor and some lightness to it.

I watched this remake last night [at time of comment]...and for me, I'd call it like this: As a Friday Night romp/remake...it was good, it had all the ingredients for a goodie/baddie battle...brief story history of the protagonist...and gets to the point. However!...for me, it didn't have that family-vibe built between the characters like the original did. The original with Swayze broke the mould...It was by an era...for an era. That being said, the ridiculousness of baddies getting severly beaten up/stabbed and "literally" coming back worked in this CGI-Punches version, as you know what you're getting, and it doesn't have to take itself seriously...My childhood era vis the original will never be surpassed "in terms of its enduring staying-power over the past 35+yrs] but this modern version, with fantastic physiques to aspire to/the fights/the action/a scarilly-wild Conor McGregor...It's good...I give the original 1989 version an 8.5/10...and the 2024 remake 7.5/10....

Dan's right some concepts are designed for parody. Look at 80s classics such as Airplane! or the Monty Python movies. They wouldn't be such well-made stories if they took themselves so seriously.

I didn't know about this until two days ago, when I saw a TV ad. It's incredible how much faith executives have in titles. This was never going to go far enough to NOT be unfavorably compared to the Road House name.

clearly movie was set up for a sequel . Where modern movies fall short is that they set up franchises instead of leaving everything on the table. for example if thr original was made today the sequal would be set up as daltons revenge for his friend dying and behind the bad guy would a more evil bad guy. the original was made with no intention of a sequal. they made a cult classic. that tension in the original with jimmy and dalton was amazing you knew the fight was going to be epic. this movie was decent it was a good movie but the final fight scene imo was mid at best

A high tech turkey from the GG.
There are more one liners from the original roadhouse still blowing around today,
‘ I’ll get all the sleep I need when I’m dead’ And the original launched Patrick Swayze and Made, Wade Garrett household name.
This one is terrible smell of a film.
Jake Gyllenhaal props up this movie ,
Without him and the goofy guy with a broken arm , I would’ve turned it off after about 10 minutes .
Conor McGregor was just awful . If you could understand what he was saying, he didn’t actually add anything to his performance, and frankly, I think he paid somebody to be in that film. Please please, please don’t anybody else give him a job, at least until he’s had an acting lesson or six.

The original "Road House" was *nasty* ; the real bad guys in the original scared the shit out of you (who has a knife blade in their boot toe?). Even the boss, Ben Gazzara, in the original, you felt he was depraved, debauched. This movie didn't have people like that.

  • @Bastiondar
    @Bastiondar 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Was bad. Noticed CGI in the first fight. Thought the movie was opening with someone playing a video game. I thought (oh, that's kinda new) but then I realized it wasn't a video game. Then the speed ups and badly executed editing to make fights look seamless. This was just not a good movie. Then you've got Arturo Castro..wasted. He should have been a bouncer for the Road House. His character being a sort of protégé to Dalton would have been interesting. The same with Joaqim de Almeida. He was wasted in his role as the Sheriff. It would have been better if he had been either the owner of the Road House or a bartender inside it.
I also agree about about what Dan said about Billy Magnussen. He usually brings a lot of energy and quirkiness to the roles I've seen him in and steals scenes, easily. I thought he was awesome, until he became the typical boss bad guy. The scene of him getting the shave...you could almost feel the anxiety and fear of his character increasing (could see it as well). I was waiting to see what was going to happen, and what he would do..but after that scene, it was like his character just petered out. You could have replaced him with anyone and it would wouldn't have made a difference..

  • @baconbitsstudios3902
    @baconbitsstudios3902 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah thats what I said. Meh its fine. Could have been way better if they just made some small adjustments to some of the characters. Like McGregor could actually have worked perfect, if you cut him down to 2 - 3 smaller scenes. And correct, Jake was the only thing that saved it. They needed more backstory with him and less dumb Connor scenes. He is just so over the top in every scene, and gets annoying very quickly. But, I get it, that's just the downside of using a non actor. You have to write him one dimensionally. The love interest is pretty forgettable, but better than the one in the original, who was also pretty dull. The villain, not the actor, character was completely wrong. Not intimidating, nor menacing, and honestly just basically a whiney trust fund kid wanting daddys approval by playing gangster with his friends. I really loved how they filmed the action scenes. Good risk to take there technically speaking. And with all that said though, yeah, it was fine. And a fun watch and worth your time. Only once probably on this one.

I liked the first Road House more and I'm not a fan of this movie anyway. First, the remake was way too goofy and campy. The girlfriend and Dalton had no chemistry or buildup. Alot of the story just felt flat. The main villian fizzles out when Connor show up and that character seems amped up with no direction. Alot of the bad guys felt like out of place cartoon characters. Too much comedy and not enough tension. I like the girl at the bookstore and Jake's character. Also, you never see the bar build up to a better looking bar.

what total nonsense, the cast including the lead, are wooden and uncharismatic - its like they didn't really know what it was they were going for. The script is terrible. Imagine all the cut scenes of a mid 2000's game playing out as movie - thats how it feels. A pot plant could do better job than the lead actor. Bizarrely, out of sheer spectacle, Mcgregor is the highlight of the movie.
