Nell Carter was an incredible talent. Reviews were tough on this production. All the bootlegs and clips I've seen suggest otherwise. Nell is a fabulous Hannigan with her larger than life voice and persona. It is a travesty that this production did not get a cast recording and that Nell never made any solo albums. She is greatly missed. And I LOVE the added "You Make Me Happy" number...it's a fun moment between Hannigan and Grace. They should make that song an optional add in like they do with that added Daddy Warbucks song. Who doesn't want MORE Hannigan! :-)
Black people have been part of *Annie* at least since the 1982 movie when Geoffrey Holder played Punjab. Even before that, Grace Jones covered "Tomorrow" and turned it into a disco song. She even sang it in the same key as Aileen Quinn.
Ronizetti one of the best! I swore I was gonna put this phone down, but when I found out she did this ... I had to look for her singing this song. One of the GOATS, but carol Burnett will always be the goat for this part . But Nell is right up there
My son and niece performed this play last week, and since then, I’ve found myself diving into every version of Annie I can find. What truly makes a production like this shine isn’t just the incredible acting and singing but also the live orchestra, which adds a magical layer to the experience. On top of that, the attention to detail in the props, staging, and lighting-it all comes together to create something extraordinary. It’s moments like these that remind me just how much I admire theatre as an art form. The immense effort that goes into every aspect is awe-inspiring, and each performance truly is one of a kind. While technology allows us to relive these moments through recordings, there’s something uniquely intimate about being in the audience, absorbing the energy and emotion firsthand. Watching these videos always leaves me wishing I could have been there in person. Thank you for sharing this performance-it’s an absolute 10 out of 10 in my book!
In terms of a cast album think they probably didn't have in the budget since a lot of it went to damage control from the bad publicity from the firing of the lead pre broadway
@@tomgallowitz4464 oh yea I remember that whole thing! She was from my town, one of my friends went to high school with her. Wonder whatever happened to her.
Durell Griffin lived in Philly suburbs when this whole thing occurred, she ended on idol in one of the later Fox seasons but had withdraw since she had already did some professional work before the show and it was amateurs only
I was a gigantic Nell Carter fan from her days on Gimme A Break and was thrilled to see this when it came to Rochester. This brings back such wonderful memories from a woman who was gone much too soon - thank you so much Spiderwoman!!!
The vary first girl started with mrs hannigan did a great job. Doing the song is totally awesome, if there’s more clips or show with this I know people will enjoy it even better
I almost think her timing is better on the stage than on film. She is almost perfect. I have no skill in this area, but I have been a fan of Nell's for 35 years and I'm 42. But she is excellent on stage. I'm almost sad to have fallen in love with her work on gimme a break.😍 Love your work old friend.... Rest in peace
I grew up in North Carolina and my mother wouldn't take me to New York to see the revival even though I'd been there twice before and she asked me if I wanted to go to a relative's funeral there a couple years earlier. Nell was supposed to perform in Yanceyville, NC in March 2003. That obviously never happened; she died when I was visiting my grandparents in southern California. The last time I visited them before that, Walter Matthau died. The next time I visited them that same year, John Ritter died.
Thank you so much for posting this!! So glad to finally see some clips of Nell in this role. Would love to see more clips from the rest of the show if you have them :)
I know this production had the problem with Nell's casting and the lack of Pro-shot to promote her, but she was good in the role, also shout-out for the Colour-blind casting. I think this footage was recorded privately for a cast member rather than promotional material
dt nyc so they did but by the way that I was read the incident of Nell’s disappointment but I see that they caved in. But the way this has survived, somebody must of obtained a copy as it and the other tape aren’t in Lincoln City were they belong
Yes, a two-camera pro shoot for the press reel; what you see here is from the "tight" camera as opposed to the "wide" one. The box is labeled March 19.
Despite Nell’s casting being an issue feel like just everything else with this production the firing of Joanna overshadowed everything even after the fact since you can’t bring up the 20th without that incident hanging overhead
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Is there possibility some more of the press reel can be uploaded? I’ve been searching for it for years - thank YOU SO MUCH for this! :)
This was a two-camera shoot, eventually edited together to create a press reel. For the purpose of this posting, I chose footage from the "tight" camera.
You channel is really my favorite on TH-cam, you have sooooooo many absolutely incredibly rare and sometimes forgotten performances and clips that bring back such wonderful memories! THANK YOU!!

Your correct with your comment
She IS amazing and I always loved her. Even though she never recorded a solo album, at least she released 3 singles in the 1973-75 time period.
To everyone stating that Taraji P. Henson is the first African American Miss Hannigan
- Let’s remember the wonderful Nell Carter

Nell was perfection!!
Ginme a Break!
Nell is GREAT! I don't know about the entire production but she seems great in all the clips I've seen.
This woman is like looking at a rare jewel that we often only HEAR OR READ ABOUT.

This is the best thing that happened to me all weekend.
I am delighted to hear you say that.

Always loved Nell Carter. She is great in this! She did not get the praise she deserved and we were all robbed of a cast album!!!

@@tomgallowitz4464 Which was such a mistake. Joanna Pacitti was perfect for the role, I think producers wanted to repeat what they did in the 70's.
I saw her play this role in Pittsburgh many years ago and she was FANTASTIC!!!
Well this is an unexpected delight!!! I had no idea she played Hannigan, she's fabulous!
Yeah me neither. She was going to do a Broadway production before she died. Such a Great talent.

Fantastic!💓
I appreciate a brown miss hanningan
Love Nell Carter she was the greatest 🙂🙂☺☺
Legend.
Wow thank you!
Someone who left us way too soon.
I saw this in Baltimore

Nell Carter Miss Hannigan
Esay Street
Annie The Musical Broadway Cast
I love the Easy Street song, but I wish they'd written some more verses.
Neil Carter is the best and perfect miss Hannigan probly the best on broadway in my opinion
Mark Roelen yes for broadway, for sure
Her voice sounds rough here but I still love her!
Why does one side of my earphone plays the instrumental and the other plays the vocals?

Do you have any footage of Annie 2 Miss Hanaggins revenge? There's footage of the show recorded at the john f kennedy center of the performance arts.
Where did you get this? If you have the whole show I would be interested in doing some trading with you for it

Whoever was working the camera should have zoomed out for the ending of Easy Street, Closeups do nothing to show the choreography. LOL
