I know what you mean. Solidad Canyon road is just over the hill. It’s funny that Southern Pacific loco’s aren’t even allowed on the current Union Pacific owned rails.
"DUEL" is a fantastic movie! Spielberg's directorial debut is a thriller full of suspense, reminiscent of Hitchcock. Carey Loftin, one of Hollywood's greatest Stunt drivers was behind the wheel of this ominous Peterbilt truck. The only lasting "Needlenose" from the movie made an appearance at a truck show in 2021! ( Can you tell I love this movie? 🤭😎) Starring: Dennis Weaver, '71 Plymouth Valiant, (3) Peterbilts and of course Carey Loftin (BULLITT, VANISHING POINT & more!)
2:27,That looks like a Southern Pacific SD-45,I have one in HO scale in my collection of train stuff. Love this flick📽,one of my all time perennial favorites. It's amazing how a "junkyard fugitive" like that 1955 Peterbilt has become a movie icon.
This i think is still Spielbergs best movie! This was a simple but genius idea! The scenery the vehicles and the soundtrack all perfect for a cult road movie! Perfectly filmed ,weaver was great and the trucker could certainly drive! Love the fact that every detail is shown? Trucks use a low gear! So he goes through the box to top! I have always wondered what the top speed on both vehicles was? Its obviously speeded up but it works!
the one used for the train scene is a 1960 pete 351, the back up (never shown in the movie, but still exists) is a (i think) 1957 pete 281, and the truck shown in most of the movie is the '55 281 that we all know and love
@awildjared1396 , The one mostly shown in the film was a 1957 Peterbilt 281 that gets destroyed in the final scene of the film after it goes down the cliff although it was previously said to be a 1955 by two previous drivers that had driven the truck before it was used to film Duel new documents have now surfaced that proves that it was actually a 1957 The 1960 Peterbilt 281 was it's back up truck that was never used any where once so ever in the film, But, Was built up once the 1673 Cat Engine in the original 1957 Truck began giving the film production problems and not knowing if the original 1957 Truck would make it to the end of filming the 1960 Truck was built up because they were on a tight time schedule for filming and yes this truck still exists today that has a small cam NTC-350HP Cummins Engine although it originally had a 262HP Cummins Engine until the end of 1995 when the original 262HP Cummins Engine had blown up A 1962 Peterbilt 351 that also featured a 1673 Cat Engine was built up for the extended scene's that were filmed in April of 1972 and this truck does appear in bus push, rail road and part of gas attendant scenes...It also has been said that this truck is long gone today The last truck if you count it was a 1964 Peterbilt 351 that was built up for an incredible hulk episode that had featured a 262HP Cummins Engine and the last time that truck was seen was right around 1983 in a warehouse on the back lot of Hollywood Universal Studio Truck Lots although it has seemed to have disappeared since than and I am guessing that it was sold to an individual around that time where it would of been sent back to work
Just drove these roads on Soledad and sierra highway , what i didn’t realize is they’re going down hill most of the time in the movie. And the roadways are much more narrow than the movie makes it seem. Carey Loftin was probably having a heluva time with that truck .
by the experience i've had in old trucks powerwise.a 170 slant 6 valiant would have NO problems outrunning a 1955 tractor trailer.especially up a minor grade.there werent many BIG horse diesels that early in the game.most 250-300 horse trucks fall on their faces climbing a hill with an empty trailer.
David Mann stated at the dinner that the truck must have had a "souped up diesel engine". Considering the driver is possibly a serial killer, it is plausible he must have modified his truck to be able to catch up and hunt down his victims cars.
Carey Loftin who was the truck driver was regarded as one of hollywoods greatest stunt drivers and stunt coordinators, he was also the stunt coordinator in the movie Bullitt, he’s also a member of the stuntman’s Hall of fame. He had a pretty impressive resume to say the least. R.I.P Carey Loftin and the great Dennis Weaver.
Class film for a TV movie. That was shown in Europe in cinema. That truck was very likely hard to drive by todays standards.no power steering but garry managed rip.
I think most truckers like to get home by 5 or 6 to have dinner, I dont imagine they call their wife and say :honey I might be a little late, just gotta run this guy off the road, keep the steak warm for me when I get back, till then see ya
I remember back in the day this was on primetime on channel 7, I use to love watching it, even though it was a bit scary the few times that I seen it on TV, my dad use to get really pissed off about this film, he to was a truck driver and felt the movie would give truckers a bad name,,,,,,,,,,,,well dad for one, I dont know of any trucker who loves to fit time to include road rage, and also a truck carrying a tanker and moving that fast? and,,,,,,,are you ready for this,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,did that trucker call his wife and say honey I may be a little late from work today, I just got to run this guy off the road.

The Truck is just so fantastic. I note that the colour changes and some details are missing at one point and has a different trailer flat metal and the hydrolic Line connection to the tanker is missing. I guess because using a second Truck for certain scenes. But the chase is a ... Cliffhanger!! 👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
Shows just how great the film was as I missed differences of the Truck. Too busy watching the chase. The little 1/43 scale diecast model Truck I bought just recently has an overall dark metallic flat bronze with some darker shades of stain and no hydraulic connection to the tanker. I noticed that in a scene from the left side of the truck point of view chasing the Plymouth Valiant in the film. I guess you can't have everything.👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
@George-pp2hr , The 1/43 scale diecast model truck seems to be based off of the surviving truck Two other trucks were also used in the film that no longer exists today
Spielberg set the bar high with this masterpiece as his directorial debut
Big Time set the Bar Top 5 Car chase movie
Should have concentrated on material like this. Helped that he had an excellent screen play. Stunt guys beautiful trucks.
Especially with how they managed to keep us always guessing on who or what the truck actually is.
I saw this movie as a kid and was terrified of semi trailers for years because of it. One of my favourites these days. Pretty incredible film
Good conversation at the end, very appreciated.
2:47-2:57 I love how the truck and the train are honking at each other! 😍🤩👍👏❤💓 And this was filmed near Antelope Valley, CA.........MY hometown!
Thanks for the info I never really knew in CA the movie Duel was a filmed

This is where they got that slogan for a vegetable juice drink. Dennis Weaver was thinking wow I could have had a V-8. 🤣🤣
One of my all time favorites. Also probably why I've always kept my radiator hoses and fan belts in top shape.

Steven Spielberg's 1st tv movie. It's called Duel excellent movie.
LOVE this movie!!!
If I remember correctly, they used a 1955 Peterbilt 361 for the Train scene, while for the rest of the film, it was a 1955 Peterbilt 281.
You are very correct there were 3 different trucks used in the movie
The 589 doesn't even hold a candle to the 281/351
the one used for the train scene is a 1960 pete 351, the back up (never shown in the movie, but still exists) is a (i think) 1957 pete 281, and the truck shown in most of the movie is the '55 281 that we all know and love
@rogerstlaurent8704 , If you count the one built up for the Incredible Hulk episode than it is actually 4 different trucks
@awildjared1396 , The one mostly shown in the film was a 1957 Peterbilt 281 that gets destroyed in the final scene of the film after it goes down the cliff although it was previously said to be a 1955 by two previous drivers that had driven the truck before it was used to film Duel new documents have now surfaced that proves that it was actually a 1957

A 1962 Peterbilt 351 that also featured a 1673 Cat Engine was built up for the extended scene's that were filmed in April of 1972 and this truck does appear in bus push, rail road and part of gas attendant scenes...It also has been said that this truck is long gone today

I think the truck was heavily modified or something
David Mann stated at the dinner that the truck must have had a "souped up diesel engine". Considering the driver is possibly a serial killer, it is plausible he must have modified his truck to be able to catch up and hunt down his victims cars.
@@curbyourenthusiasm9874, No, It certainly wasn't...
The primary truck in the film had a 260HP 1673B Cat Engine
The Best movie, real stunts! Mi favorite, i will see 1000
One of the best
A dramatic film
Every trucker's dream while on Hwy 395. _"Gad Dam Four-Wheelers!"_
Back in the era of standard cab locomotives and when vehicles were generally cooler
The new Peterbilt 589 doesn't hold a candle to this one here
I got 5 dislikes on this clip from a classic car chase because those 5 people got the clot shot cuz lying Fauci told them to.

That's the other truck that was used. 281 was a single axle and no duellys
Was this the start of road rage?

At the end, we (Christians) knew it was a lie.

Who really was in The 55 peterbit
The guy that drove the Peterbilt during the film would of been Carey Loftin
Interesting covid vaccine protest you put in on the end.

Damn ole Peterbilt is strokin son!!!
Too bad they didn't teach the stunt driver how to drive a car. That Plymouth could have outrun or outmaneuvred the truck with a slant motor easily.
Watching this for the first time the car driver seems drunk or something.

What a gay assed clip. Going from a chase scene to covid. Not cool.
Why is this COVID shit at the end of this clip, with two celebrities who I doubt ever took a science course?
