its not that rare at high altitudes. i remember backpacking in yosemite one fourth of july weekend when we got a couple of inches of snow,. luckily we were prepared
What's the big deal? It has been on record of snowing every month of the year like the Cascades Mountains of Western Washington, Beartooth Pass the state borders of Wyoming and Montana, the highest elevations of Colorado, and the Sierra Mountains of California. When I was in the USAF, my wife and I went on our honeymoon to Rocky Mountain National Park and other places there in Colorado from Michigan in late May, 1977. We crossing Trail Ridge Road which spans across the Continental Divide and snowplowing trucks were going back to Estes Park. It snowed the night before above 10,000 feet. Yet was a mild winter and some ski resorts closed down in mid March. Look at the following TH-cam video filmed going up on switchbacks on the Wyoming side of Beartooth Pass. Snowstorms that come from the southwest, west, and northwest hit this area plus drifting results a snow wall there. Reminds me of the "Snow Wall" videos of Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route in Japan.
