    That stove works on wood gasification and has to be loaded with wood a certain way to create the wood gas. Basically you build it upside down from the way you would build a regular fire. You want to pack the bottom rather tightly with wood chunks then add just enough twigs and tender on top to get it heated to emit the gas which will ignite from the holes on the top inner rim of the stove. Once that rim ignites it should sustain itself for some time. Feed it small chunks of hard wood to keep it going past that point. Carrying a small bottle of denatured alcohol helps get it started in wet weather. I carried one on the AT for a bit. Hope this helps. Love your vids guys.

    I just can't figure out why in the world a video of with this quality/time/effort/hard work has only has 6k views a week into the launch when the most retarded video like the Chewbacca mask lady who got millions views in a couple days for two minutes of stupidity. It just isn't fair, but keep up the hard work and thanks again for taking me along on this epic journey through Shenandoah.

    Wraith6765, can't respond directly to your comment, but: Good ideas with the stove! And it's definitely smart to collect kindling throughout the day, rather than last minute (which we have a tendency to do, haha). Bryan was actually looking into getting an Ursack. I think we checked REI, but I don't think they had exactly what we were looking for. Do you not have to hang the ursack? Cheers! -Andrew

      You don't hang the Ursack, but it is only good for bears, not mice and other pesky rodents.

    Great video and brings back many fond memories. When I first move to the area, I decided to go back country camping hiking up there one weekend solo. Spur of the moment since I was up in DC/VA/MD by myself since the family was still in Florida waiting to come up later.
    Anyway went up to basically same area, hit the trail and made about 10 miles in. Ran into a solo bear on the trail shortly before dusk and ole Yogi went on his way. Still the thought of bear in on trail, me out solo with no one real knowing me out there, and nightfall approaching, fell heavy on the mind.
    Went another mile or so looking for flat area with very little good spots, so back tracked to area where I saw bear which was a nice little flat area and decided to put tent up there (ironically also a Sierra 3D) and did all the right thing from some nice hydrate pack in the MSR and stowing the food away in the tree.
    Went to sleep nice and comfy and later in the night, winds start picking up, rains come in and hard to sleep, but was under good cover, good tent and all was alright. About 3 am, got woken up when my tent (which I had the guy lines set out) moved big time.
    Wow WTH, got my little Mag Light trying to see what was going on and heard some grunt off in the distance near where my food was hanging. Whooa, now wide awake and got my little cook pot and started to make noise and what not and just morning grunts from about 75 feet away. Finally the little Maglite lit up some eyes and got my attention and my but back in tent wide awake.
    Was not able to get to sleep and had no issue, however as soon as the sun started coming up, broke camp and immediately back trek the 10 miles to the car. I never hike so fast in my life.
    So my planned weekend was two days and one night, all said though very fond memories and I have never hiked solo since without making sure many knew were I was going.
    This great video brings back some of those memories and thank you for such. Safe hiking

    This is the third time I've watched this video. Should you ever return to Shenandoah NP, consider a cabin rental for your base then hike from there. One cabin, Doyles River cabin, is within fairly easy hiking distance from Loft Mountain campground...access to a store, showers, the AT and of course incredible vistas. The cabin is located in a picturesque spot just above the Doyles River loop and waterfall. The interior of the cabin has a wood burning stove, bunk beds and is equipped with some culinary ware. There is a small prep table as well. The stone porch is covered and a nice fireplace just outside the doorway. Of course there is fire wood galore but you may consider bringing in packaged logs as we did. A water source, a spring, is on the trail to the cabin. I slept one night on the porch leaving the snorers inside; and one of us slept in a hammock rigged across the porch (no tarp necessary). I loved watching this video again as you are all enjoyable to watch and to listen to great narratives.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds awesome! So you rent the cabin and then hike to it and stay at it for some amount of nights? If so that sounds like a real good time, may have to look into it!

    I don't like to think of it as "conquering", so much as "accomplishing". I find that there is often a balance between appreciation and managing the difficulties that the wilderness presents and that there are many individuals who experience both. I am a self-proclaimed peak-bagger (among having many other outdoor passions, peak-bagging is just my main association) and I feel a great sense of internal satisfaction when I climb a mountain and reach the top. Great film work and discussions guys. Keep up the good work!

I had an internship at Shenandoah last summer and I miss being there pretty much every day, so thank you for taking me back home for an hour. I have also never explored this part of the park, but it is now on my list of things to see/do when I go back! These shots are amazing, everything is so green! And some of your conversations, or things that happened...like thinking of that one singer, or having a hand come out and help...just silly things like that remind me of my own adventures. I can't wait to get back out there.

    What headlamps were y'all using? How long does the battery last?... sorry if someone already asked.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem! Here's a current link to the headlamps Bryan and I use: amzn.to/2oasZm4
      The one Robby uses is 10 years old and is no longer in production. In my experience, the batteries seem to die down after one of our weekend-length trips. Granted, we are often hiking at night because we come in late, or we take our time while filming and get caught in the dark. After one trip, they will still work, but will be dimmer. But other than that, they've been great. Hope this helps! -Andrew

    Ha ha! I had to laugh at your confusion over how to pronounce McLaughlin, guys. (assuming that's the spelling). There's no F sound. In my neck of the woods anyway, it's pronounced Mc-lock-lin. :-) Cheers!

    Too much music, way too much. Can't hear what's being said in places. Nature has its own sounds and would be nice to hear them.
    Can you reissue without all the muzak pls, cos I love your stuff but this is awful.
    Sorry to be negative but really disappointed.

    I was listening to one of the podcasts about favorite episodes and heard you guys remark that Shenandoah was among your least favorite. Lack of grand views was one of the reason's given in comparison to some of the hikes out west, as well as some of the logistical frustrations. No doubt Shenandoah can't compare to the views of Yosemite but there are far better hikes to do in Shenandoah than this one. Check out Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon if you come back. Both are far more visually interesting. They are popular and can be crowded but probably no more so than anything you did in Yosemite. I've watched several of the episodes and as a professional photographer I really appreciate the effort that goes into the shot selection and production. The narration is well written and the fact that you do your own music is really quite impressive. You've set the bar way high for this type of programming. You should consider licensing your music as another revenue stream to support the channel.

    Nice production guys ... well done. Beautiful scenery ... I have been this park before. Just curious about your very slow pace .... 2.6 miles per day? I can usually cover that in about 1.5 hrs. Keep 'em coming ... I think this is better than a lot of the commercial programming on regular TV, which I no longer subscribe to.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our slow pace is due to the amount of filming we need to do. We've never actually timed ourselves, but we simply find that planning out shorter trips to allow ourselves ample time for footage allows us to get all the shots we want to without feeling rushed.

    I could listen to you guys narrate all day. I actually do with your longer episodes while typing away in the office. Great episode but can't wait for Yellowstone! Btw, great drone shots and the song beginning 23:54 is gotta be my fave sound track in this episode. So uplifting! What's the title? :)

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! Yellowstone should be quite a good one :) Hmm, I don't know if that song has title yet, but once we get the soundtrack sorted out on our bandcamp page, i'll let you know! Cheers! -Andrew

    I have never been to the Shenandoah National Park (I live in Canada on the West Coast) but the song Oh Shenandoah was one of my most favourite songs I sang in choir in tenth grade. I hope someday to visit the park, when the world is not in the middle of a pandemic. Is the Shenandoah Valley also part of the park?

  • @trailkrum
    @trailkrum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You guys should consider starting a "hiking knowhow series," with episodes such as "fire starting," "campsite selection," "trip planning," "filming on the trail," etc. You already have a tone of footage that you could choose from to highlight do's and don'ts and maybe even for short bloopers segments at the end of each video. And you already do a great job w/ narration. This could work well as an exclusive to encourage more Patreons as you already w/ pre-releases of new videos.
