In this Tutorial I have explained How to Edit STL file in FreeCAD. This tutorial is very helpful for 3D Printing where you have to modify existing STL file and again convert it into STL file for 3D Printing.

Thank you, straightforward and helpful. For other users quick reference here are the steps you went through:
Select “Part” Workbench
import STL file
highlight STL (Mesh)
on toolbar select “part>create shape” (density 0.01)
delete mesh - to avoid confusion
highlight shape
on toolbar select “part>convert to solid”
delete shape - to avoid confusion
highlight solid
on toolbar select “part>refine shape” (to reduce number of defining lines)
Select “Part Design Workbench”
highlight solid
create body (base feature will be created)
edit base feature as required
save model
export modified STL
