Just replaced the clutch on my 2002 cooper. 1st time with a mini. Wasn’t looking forward to it but followed your video and pulled down left subframe as you demonstrated. Start to finish was 5 hours. Enjoyed doing it. Lots of cheap minis for sale with clutch/gearbox faults. Money to be made. 💰. Keep the videos coming. 👍👍👍
steven watt thanks for sharing ... really glad to hear you tackled that within that time frame... I’m gonna upload a few more on the MINI Cooper S and Cooper D which garages are charging a fortune .. it can be done within 3 to 4 hrs without removing completely the front end .. thanks for your review
Just did this job on my R53 and it took me 5 days to do! I have every tool imaginable to complete a job (except a lift) and it still took me that long. This was by far one of the worst jobs I had to do and I will not do it again. I did change out every bushing while I had it apart but man it was rough. If my R53 was my daily, it would have been long gone!
@Juan Lopez - Just line them up or get a cardboard box and number it in stages. I starting to develop short term memory and that is what I do. Sometimes it does get hard, but I get a marker + tape and number them too.
Damn fine job. I changed the water pump, friction pulley, belt, belt tensioner, knock sensor, valve cover gasket, plugs, coils, pcv vent tube, and exhaust manifold gasket last month...as in I myself. Now my clutch has started slipping...FML. No way I'm capable of going this far! Nice work though.
Hi, do you have to take the bolts out of both sides of the engine cradle? On the video it only shows you taking the passenger side bolts out? But you do loosen the plastic tray from the drivers side floor. Many thanks
Mine is booked in to be done on Thursday. My regular mechanic categorically refused to do it because it's so tight to do. Some garages refuse to do them. It's going to cost me £631 and j was told it's going to take about 5 hours to do. But that going by what the book says...?
I have a 1.6d and having problems whilst in neutral, rattling noise happening but if I press clutch in it goes away, the car drives fine with no gearslipping ect. Is this the flywheel or could it be bearings in clutch?
A bit hard to diagnose without physically testing it ..,, but based on what you’ve written I’d say it’s the DMF if it was the gearbox you’d know about it after a few yards driving.
Just a note why don’t you loosen the center nut to the CV joint then the tires then lift it that way it wont be hard i know you use an impact but to me that would be easier just a note
Hi, can you do this job without removing the AC condenser? Also I’ve seen you use quick jacks in one of your videos, how comes you don’t really use them anymore?
Quick jack are for RWD .., front wheel drive I only need to navigate under the front end only..., you can actually leave the subframe and whole lot in place. .., I will do an updated video on how not to remove any of the pipes. Unless you’re changing the gearbox.
Dan Mcmahon I have a variety of waterproofs. .., 1.padded goretex 2. Heated winter thermal( battery operated) 3. Padded parka 4.padded bomber. All waterproof. Waterproof boots also.

Fairplay what a stupid design..got to be one of the most complex for a clutch.Neighbours would think omg Doris nxt door has had her mini chucked out of an aeroplane lol 😂Good job that man 👌
I have a question? My mini won't go into gear, it's a 5 speed an it was running fine but now when I start it up it won't go into gear, plus when I do find a gear it's like something is holding it back. Also it's like it forgot where neutral is, it wants to take off an reverse it seems it wants to go forward. Idk what's wrong, maybe gearbox? Transmission? Linkages?idk nothing about mini's, I've always worked on Honda's.. if anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears? Thanks.
Jessica Mills it sounds like your clutch pressure plate has gone faulty. One way to eliminate a gearbox issue. Is to try all the gears with the engine switched off. If it goes into gear then your gearbox is fine. And to eliminate any issues with the hydraulic maybe not compressing the pressure plate enough. Is to see wether your clutch pedal comes back up all the way without any free play right at the top. Hope that helps. Have a great Christmas and happy new year 🥳.... and thanks for visiting the channel
@@WMCS thank you.. but no it only goes into gear when turned on. And only 5th 4th. My dad said something about a pressure plate also.. the last time I drove it everytime I let off the gas I heard a grinding sound but when I touch gas it stopped idk.. I know I put fluid in the S.Cylinder an lubed up linkages under hood and under gear shifter an for a moment it went into every gear but first. I have a feeling I'm looking at a new pressure plate but the clutch petal does come up fine like you said.. so maybe the gearbox??? And if so would it be easier to just get a new transmission?? Thank you for taking time to respond, I really need help, I love that little car
I strongly suggest linkage bushing replacements. $22 on eBay, and replacing your clutch which comes with a pressure plate and throw out bearing. Also if you do switch out the tranny, upgrade to the 04 - 06 getrag cause they are Superior
Great videos. saves time on unnecessary work. I am about to take on 09 Cooper S, Automatic. needs new transmission. Any suggestions Vs to this video? thanks
yuri zdrak Pretty much the same except watch out for the small air pipes that runs alongside the front ends they tend to break quite easily. Make sure the” O” ring for the air intake for the inter cooler is a 100% seal otherwise it will dump excess fuel in the exhaust causing it to heat up to the point where it glows bright orange.
yuri zdrak They run from the back of the throttle body to the bulk head. One runs directly. I front of a bolt. You’d be tempted to push it to the side to access the bolt. And it will snap.
Is the housing you took off that light? I was worried I would need a transmission jack to lift it and set it down but you handled it like nothing. I'm not gonna remove the front like you, so I might just bench press it to get it off and have my wife help me align it.
D Booyaj if you look through the channel I’ve posted another version of this repair that’s a lot quicker and do not require that much stripping down. Let me know what you think
@@WMCS the 04-06 R50s have getrag transmission with linkage in different locations and my subframe and bumper are already on the ground. I'm gonna put my engine lift over my engine from the driver side to support the engine then use ratchet straps to hold the clutch housing while I unbolt it. From there I'll pick it up and set it down gently or use my floor jack in some way. Maybe to support the engine while I lower the clutch housing. Thank you!!
