Hi! Love your videos. Thank you. Do you know where a penny farthing can be purchased in Canada? Or can someone order from somewhere? You make it look like so much fun im convinced I must try it!
You can buy them here: www.unicycle.co.uk/penny-farthing/complete-pennys.html?manufacturer=560 We have shipped them to Canada before, it is not cheap... but you can see the size of the boxes, so not surprizing!
Thank you for your question. The sizes for the penny farthing leg length is on all our products. www.udcpennyfarthing.com/udc-mk4-penny-farthing/ as well as our FAQ. There is some adjustment with the saddle, but not much and the main difference is made in where you put the saddle (sliding front or back) and with the crank length, although the table in the product is a good indication.
I've read the reply to the two Canadian riders about purchasing this bike. Is the process the same for USA? Also what is a ballpark figure for shipping to America?
Yes, you need to check out unicycle.co.uk and add the Penny Farthing you are wanting into the shopping basket. You can then put in your country, province and postal code and it will give you the shipping price. It will also remove the UK sales taxes from the price (20%). Please note that you will be charged Canadian taxes and duty on import by DHL. This is out of our control.
We do not stipulate an exact max weight for the penny farthings, but you need to be sensible with it, if you are 200kg then it would be sensible to have them reinforced. I suggest you contact unicycle.co.uk directly and discuss if any modifications are needed for your weight. We have riders who are about 100kg on them.
Penny Farthings can be used as regular bikes, but they have their disadvantages. They can not stop fast so are not great in traffic. Down hill is hard due to the braking - you either use the brake/legs from the seated position and the rear wheel skids or you stand on the rear pegs that gets the single rear brake to work properly... but it is still not like a regular bike. Riding up hill is just hard as you are highly geared. As for riding down curbs, it is ok, but you need to be aware of transferring your weight backwards so that you do not go over the front. They are not as safe as "safety bikes". Always wear a helmet. The advantages are obvious.. they are so much fun to ride and everyone loves them.
You can go up and down curbs, but I do it slow and I only go up curbs made for at minimum cars. I use it as a commuting bike, this is a 25-30 miles trip minimum and it includes city traffic, intersections etc. It is a perfect cruising bike as long as you do not expect to blaze about. It is an awesome and nice bike to ride and it takes little energy out of you so you can bike pretty much all day, even on quite heated days (assuming you got a source of water with you or along the way. Not to mention the attention you get along the way. The con, the bad, is you have to think ahead, and be prepared to dismount on a moments notice since you can't fully stop easily without walls or posts to lean on. Down hill can be a problem since too steep declines can quickly speed you out of control, but thankfully with the back wheel brake I can stop/keep control of the speed even with very light applications of it. Riding the penny is about respecting your limits, and always assuming your limit is lower than you think. That way you will avoid very unesseccary injuries.
The cost currently is £1500, but you need to keep an eye on the product on the website. Here is the link: www.unicycle.co.uk/penny-farthing/52-udc-mk4-penny-farthing-black.html

hello. Do you ship to Spain?
Yes, no problem in shipping to Spain or almost anywhere in the World when they are back in stock
How functional is this bike?
Is it to be ridden as a Cruiser or is it functional to ride around town (can it go down a curb without flipping over?).
