  • The Mini JCW Clubman and BMW M135i share the same platform, engine, gearbox and powertrain so should be very similar. Well my good mate Joe Achilles has a BMW M135i as a long termer from BMW UK so we met up and put the two cars up against each other.
We compare the cars on 10 criteria with honest opinion based on our experience with running the cars for the last couple of months. At the end we add up the scores and there can be only one winner.

I’ve never been in the new mini but I’ve been in a few BMW’s, M5, 335 and an old 320 and the one thing I found with all of them was they were competent cars but never exciting or with any character. So for smile factor, it would be the mini for me. I

My JCW Clubman just under $50,000 US. Enigmatic Black with Black roof and mirrors. Went with 18" black spoke wheel. Comfort I got black lounge leather (touch of BMW I guess!?). Only thing I didn't get was self parking. I will drive from San Francisco CA to Seattle WA to visit my son's family. 778 miles. Normally under 11 hours. Love this car. Find myself no music and window down. This car creates its own music.

Pete, came back to this after you revealed picking up your new clubman JCW to remind myself of just what you have bought.
I've got to say this was a great collaboration between you and Joe and your production quality is excellent. What a great interesting and easy viewing pair you make - and also for cars that are (almost) affordable for us regular car enthusiasts. I say almost affordable as it is a relative term. It's great to watch some of the more tasty performance cars but am glad you are catering for more attainable budgets.
As I said this collaboration really works and you should consider more with possibly catering for more modest budgets for interesting fun car buys if that's possible. Cheers guys!

Great video guys, you are both great to watch and very informative. I have to say that until the new 1 series came out the clubman was one of the strangest looking cars on the market. Now comparing the two cars I'd have the mini over the BMW all day long. The BMW seems to be aimed at a different market now and unfortunately it's left me behind.

So glad the Mini won your test, as I have said before, I drive a BMW X1 m sport for business only, but much prefer my Mini f56 Cooper diesel, I know it’s only a 1.5 but loads more fun and it has 7.5k worth of extras on it makes it quite a special car.

The ending was a foregone conclusion but dramatically enhanced until the end, at least for the actors. BMW is the parent company and a luxury brand all posh and grown-up like, even at entry level. I think the 1 series is soccer mom on a budget with upgrades that add posh rather than driving excitement. When your spouse leaves you, the kids are all off to college and you don't need room for 4 to go on power lunches with executives you sell off the chains and get a Mini. Smiles do come in small packages, mine come in the form of an r56 ... I don't miss the posh that just slowed me down and dulled the senses.
    Great video.

I'm trying to decide between upgrading my current Paceman JCW (which I love) or chopping it in for the new 306 brake Countryman JCW? Probably my last new car. Or upgrade the Paceman, keep it for a year and then buy a secondhand Countryman? Incidentally, hate the Clubman shape (as you said Marmite!)

However after 1200mls the infotainment system refused to work at all on an intermitant basis... Replaced without hesitation by BMW Mini... Such a good price, 2 years old, almost half price.... and certainly half what they cost in Spain!

Very interesting video. I've recently test driven both, and for me, if it was my money (and it might be very soon) I'd go for the A35 AMG! It's exceptionally close between the Mini and M135i though, but for me I preferred the BMW, it came down to the interior. I loved the digital dials and tech, as you guys thought the Mini felt a little dated. My daughter has a Mini One, and it felt almost the same as that. Maybe I should hang on for the next gen?
The biggest thing that I didn't like about the Beemer was the lower front grill, it looks like a character from Wallace and Grommet! Once seen, never unseen!
But both are brilliant cars, although I'm hanging on for the A45 AMG, I can't wait to test drive that one and compare it.....

For me the Mini is just too goofy looking. And I have driven a brand new Mini Clubman JCW 306ps. It was the harshest ride I have ever felt on any car. It felt like the dampers had locked up when driving over bumps or imperfections on the streets. My friend, who is a Mini fan and owns a Coopers S Clubman, also thought it was way too hard to live with. This was even a test drive because he wanted one. He ended up not buying it because he couldn’t live with those dampers. I must say I like sportier rides but this was way over the top for me also. I can’t believe for a minute the BMW is that hard, and should have won the Ride Quality competition. It is pretty fast and has a really nice darty feeling in corners although almost a little too hard steering. Sporty yes, but almost over the top here as well.

I own both a BMW X5 and a MINI S Clubman so I am not biased on either brand. The Mini’s looks and interior are much better than the M1 which I find as bland as any Toyota. I do agree that the M1 is more practical but the MINI is much more fun to drive.

There are a lot more than 2K of options! I spec'd a JCW Mini, and with the options I chose the car came to £38K after a £4K discount!!!! Without anything from Mini or the Dealer, you can reach as high as £43K I think the only thing I had missed off it was the memory seats.

Great videos gents. I've watched both yours and Joe's. I followed Joe from Baby BMW when he set his channel up and I'd just got my 2015 LCI M135i.
I think you've both been really fair in your scoring. Joe's final vote for wanting the Mini for 12 months swung it and I think if that question had been which one would he want indefinitely, he would've picked the BMW.
In reality they are both amazing cars and a win for one is kind of a win for the other given they share so many key parts.
If you put a gun to my head, I'd pick the Mini too. Taking away the two USPs of the M135i (straight six engine, RWD) I think handicaps it.
I wonder what the outcome would be if you put this Clubman up against an M140i finale edition...

Well, it's like giving a gunslinger back his favourite gun for a gunfight. The BMW was all about the engine and rwd. I think the M140i beats the Mini!

Important: Long term upkeep costs. I am hoping Mini is better as I am buying one and selling my 16 year old very expensive at the time BMW because even with low miles and routine scheduled maintenance, things keep breaking and going out. I have loved the BMW & kept it far, far longer than any other car, but it is boring and expensive to maintain.

Hmmm....how would a BMW X2 M35i compare then? I think that car looks better than both of these but is it more compromised as far as ride/handling etc?? There are so many variations of very similar cars out there. Now being old and with my 57 year Motor/Autocar collection about to go off to a new home (😰😰😰) I looked at old comparisons from the 1960’s. Ford Escort 1300GT v. MG 1300 v. Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti v. BMW 1600 v. Triumph 1300. Now I do wonder if manufacturers would allow such tests these days...probably not but back then, it gave us dreams of saving up...PCP didn’t exist and HP was hard work. Good work on the video and after some experience with the older M135i, the dreadful ride would send me to the Mini shop straight away..much more “special”! Happy driving Peter!!!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂😀😀😀😀

Yep I’m agreeing with most points. I think the Mini has that ‘fun go cart’ feel that we love so much. So much feedback through the controls. The Beemer kinda has that ‘6’ pot sound, hmmmm. Weird. I reckon the cars tick boxes for those who like the individual marques in fairness. This is a really cool comparison. 43.5k, ouch lol. I’m guessing the economy, insurance group and running costs are still similar? Lmao at the scoring process, ya silly sods.

I swapped my 2016 BMW M235i for a late 2019 JCW R56 in white/silver with a red roof and full leather, and I don't miss it, I find the MINI interestingly quirky inside, a more involved drive and more toys and a pan roof, o.k. the six cylinder engine roar is no more so now I work the four cylinder harder and it produces an enjoyable sound and a more exciting drive, not as fast but close, looks the dog's dangly bits as well, looking back the M235i's aesthetics are a tad boring compared to the JCW.

I'll start by saying I'm not a great fanboy of either car or either brand. That out of the way... For me, the BMW doesn't look at all special. Take the grille and the badges away and it looks much like a whole bunch of other hatchbacks, many of which cost a lot less. No matter how good the BMW may well be on paper, it just can't justify its price. There are some great options out there for the same or less money, even brand new if you're not a brand snob, and when you consider what you can get used, you can get a serious bit of kit for that money.
All that said, for me, the Mini is also too much money for what it is, but then when you go on various configurators, particularly when spec'ing any Euro car, it's not at all hard to get to these numbers, even for cars starting for less than 30 grand, to get the cars the way you want them. Nonetheless, there are also great options out there for the price of the Mini, although for the price of the BMW the options definitely increase and improve significantly.
However, at least the Mini doesn't look the same as everything else. More of a marmite car, I accept that is probably the case, but we live in a time where too many cars look almost the same and where the pressure to conform has in many ways become utterly oppressive.
For the time being at least, the thought police haven't criminalized choosing a car that looks different, and that reason would be enough for me to choose the Mini, even though the BMW's plus points are maybe logically more compelling for me personally.
It's also perfectly reasonable to not want to stand out from the crowd when choosing a car, as there are sadly real potential negative consequences to choosing a car that doesn't blend in like many others do.
Ignoring price for a moment, I am sure the BMW is a practical, competent and safe car that allows you to go out for a spirited drive without drawing unwanted attention that may be more easily attracted in a more individual car, and these are compelling characteristics but not necessarily a unique selling proposition.
On the other hand, I do not agree that wanting to express some individuality necessarily comes from immaturity or that a definition of maturity must necessarily include being bland, boring or even being sensible to the point of not wanting to express oneself.
Lastly, I mentioned how easy it is to spend a small fortune spec'ing a car how you would really want it. Euro car makers in particular seem to be only offering the most useful of the new technologies, including the safety technologies, like adaptive criuse control, on the highest trim levels, meaning you have to choose a high trim level, which increases the price dramatically before they become an option, and even then you may have to choose an expensive option pack to get what you want along with other stuff you don't need. I am especially interested in air cond., parking aids, pedestrian protection, collision avoidance, adaptive cruise, and Android Auto. Adaptive cruise in particular is often unavailable without paying a lot, yet it is something I really want, and I know all these technologies are actually inexpensively available to all manufactuers, basically off-the-shelf from their suppliers.
I think it is extremely dubious to not offer the satety technologies just about every car review talks about as an addition to the most basic trim level. Even then, I think they should be standard on every new car. How can safety be an option? The government is legislating to push manufacturers to offer and consumers to buy what manufacturers might not otherwise offer and consumers might not otherwise buy, etc etc etc, yet readily available car safety systems are not mandated. We are headed to a culture where humans are not allowed to drive on the grounds of safety, yet maybe a human driver can be as safe, even safer, if s/he drives a car equipped with all the safety systems a fully autonomous car will have. We are allowing humans to become inferior to machines, yet it would be some machine to be able to do everything as well as the average human. We are a fully integrated 'machine' that has much greater capacity for multi-tasking and greater sensory awareness incl. foward thought and perception than any machine. You would need multiple integrated supercomputers to have a chance of replicating our functional capacities. Maybe many of us need training, but as the saying goes, you use it or you lose it.
    Anyway, rant over.
If it were my money and these were the only two car models I could choose between, I think the Mini has a so-called x-factor that the BMW simply does not have.
    As always, YMMV.
