You guys need a solid block of hardwood about the same diameter as the piston. Place it end on on the piston and hit the top of the wood with a sledgehammer. Works every time!
Good progress. I’ve done one D4 with a tight engine years ago and have another early one waiting. I cleaned the liners up with sunken hone, new rings, reused head gasket. I used conventional o-rings one liners. They were too narrow for groove so I filled void with silicon and let cure before a fresh film of silicone on o-ring just before installing. The liners will do just fine with some fine pitting. I’m kind of cheap or frugal, what ever you want to call it. All I bought were the piston rings and liner o- rings. Everything worked out and it runs good. I’m going to subscribe and keep watching.
Wish I was there with you guys. Did it for a living say forty years ago. Seventy three now, started for dad in the fifties.... born with a wrench in hand was the standing joke.
It still might have a stuck Cam Follower, as it seemed to stop the rotation fairly quickly. I missed the bit where you needed to park it on a hill top...!
We started a teardown of the engine. Video on that will be out tomorrow. It was parked on the pile of stone because that's how it got unloaded. They delivered on a flat bed trailer with no ramps.
good show fellers, new scriber from NC....I saw a video once where the used comp.air to free up a cylinder,i dont think it woulda worked in your case though, anyway, good luck,i be watching for the next one....stay safe
Never tried that but heard it works well. I would want to clean the whole engine well after if I did that though. Worried about solvent getting down in the crank case. In hindsight, we should have tried it here though since we ended up pulling the whole motor anyway. We have a new video up on the motor today. Thanks for watching.
It is surprising how well beer can save the day if the clearance is too loose. Dont recommend it and you have to make sure everything is not way out of round and journal is clear.
Looking forward to more! Thank you for the extra explanation. Great video.

We basically did that but not hardwood. Just a 4x4

My dad did the same thing to a 40a d4c that sat in a feild for 30 years ....shes still goin today!!
Two weeks ago ? SNOW IN JULY ??? Canada ? great video. thanks
It was two weeks between clips in the video. They were both recorded in February I think
Pour 50/50 mix acetone and automatic transmission oil into cylinders and let sit for several days to see if will brake engine free
never tried that mix before
The acetone works on any rust and transmission oil penetrates and lubes
Cool man, I’ll come along for the ride.

40:04 at this point I say slam the head back on and see what it does.
You'll see why we didn't in the next video...

Use ATF MIXED with acitone

This one will need a lot of work ! When using the log and sledge hammer on a piston , Be careful that the engine doesn't start on you ! Ha Ha

Try a torpedo heater to heat that engine up to a summer temperature to help the the oil to creap where it needs to go.
we considered it but we couldn't fit it where we wanted it
Need to warm it up,
yeah, probably would have helped if we did
The rings dont always rust sometimes just rust on the cylinder walls
yeah, but its usually not stuck then, just stiff
Would be worth getting the valves closed pump a bunch of greas in to pop it lose then flush it out with kerosene
We were afraid to use grease. Haha
E só muito trabalho a migo 👏

Why are you working on this on a huge pile of dirt? Is this a
Its where the machine was unloaded. It came in on a flatbed and we don't own anything big enough to lift it.
So you bought it from Michigan, are you in michigan? Or are you in canada, eh..... Like a bunch of Hozers EH

Why are you trying to save this thing
I would of only put diesel in that cylinder would of moved no problem just can't be in a hurry thats all
I guess I didn't capture the amount of rust well enough on camera. Haha, It was way too far gone to do anything without taking off the head.
Get some pakistani guys to work on these old machines..they perform miracles😅
