Cancelled my membership a week ago. And the reason I told them was due to their mistreatment of smaller artists. Paying them like an eigth of a penny per stream is pretty gross. We are practically one tick above piracy at that rate. Except its worse in a way because we're paying the people directly responsible for taking money from artist's pockets.
Didnt mind the service as a whole but I cant support a company like that in good faith. HARD pass. Thieves!!

The amount of ads these services run should be more than enough to pay out on the music and continue to invest in infrastructure. Those who pay for the service are a bonus to the service. I'm a musician myself & I understand the frustration. But I'm also in IT. My guess is that one of the main reasons for the price increase is the infrastructure it needs to store data. Imagine the massive amounts of data Spotify needs to store, the cooling system a data center needs, employees to maintain them, the redundancy it needs & if they need another location to add more data centers, which they have to pay for that building or land or whatever. Big data is insane & now they are relying on Google Cloud for that as well.

I use Apple music, I like the quality and convenience, but I still keep a full library of lossless music (CD Quality) to play on my modded iPod classics. I like to buy CDs of my favorite artists so I will always have them, and as a sort of collection. Listening on a dedicated device can have some nice advantages, my Main iPod has 1TB of SSD storage and the battery lasts over a month. When was the last time you listened to music on your phone, then found yourself scrolling an app, then watching a video? With a dedicated device you can focus on your music, really enjoy it, with no distractions or notifications interrupting it.

i think as a person who makes music, streaming is terrible for discovery but it’s great for commitment. like none of my friends truly expect for us to get selected for a spotify playlist, that application is for midsized artists, but if i put my music in front of someone, i don’t have to push them to buy it. i personally hate and don’t use spotify, my streamer pays artists more, but im not dedicated to any of these brands lol. i think there needs to be more pressure on all of these companies to pay artists more, bcos this price uptick for spotify isn’t going to musicians at all, it’s to add their audiobooks (and pay those people terribly too lmao). if major musicians went on strike/protests for streaming to pay more i think we’d see real progress

I recently bought a second gen iPod Mini. Used to have a second gen Nano, but I wanted something I could upgrade, so I replaced the hard drive with a 512G SSD, replaced the battery with a larger capacity battery, and I've got my sweet Sony XM5 headphones that can still do wired connection. My plan is to explore albums and genres that I haven't really tapped into before, and stuff I've never really taken the time to appreciate.
I'm still paying for my family's Spotify accounts, but recently a SECOND one of my top 10 songs of all time was removed from Spotify, so I'm getting charged more for a worse service. With an iPod and ownership of those songs, that won't happen. If I can move anyone else off it and reduce our streaming (since video streaming services are going through some nice enshitification as well), I would be pretty happy.

Yah, as an artist with some heroes that have made it on Spotify and streaming in general, I've really tried to play the game and get a semblance of that traction on that platform. Then, one quarter after another, the goal post keep getting moved (e.g. No payment on 1000> streams, paywall for lyrics, higher paywall for ads, feeding our music to AI without our consent, shutting down artist's music for supposedly fake streams even thought they could easily go after the fake accounts themselves, etc.) Years of compounding frustration has made it to where I have bitter taste in my mouth for even using Spotify as a consumer. I'm trying to get in the habit of using Bandcamp as a consumer and pushing that more as an artist. Lots of people say, "Well it's still possible to make bank from Spotify because tons of other artists have." To which I say, "Yes, just like it's possible to still win a soccer game when the other team moves the goal when you kick. Eventually, you can learn to adjust to the unfair tactic the other team uses, but why would you want to do that to begin with?"

Gotta disagree with going back to MP3. It's good if you already had a collection going so adding songs would be no problem. But if I were to buy my longest running playlist of 606 songs for 50 cents each. I would be paying $302 out of pocket. I typically reserve buying physical for "in case the world ends I want to listen to this song still". Streaming is just more convenient, just not worth $12 IMO

    • @_FLWRS
      @_FLWRS  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Everyone’s got their reasons. But also to add just because they take it slower doesn’t mean it’s cheaper. 302 is 2 years of service. Depending on how long you’ve had streaming you’ve paid far over that. That’s why it’s a good business model for them. Then there’s the possibility of them taking music off the platform without any notice then all the money you gave them was for nothing

I've been building a CD collection and using a Sony Walkman (A306). A specific reason that got me to do this, my favorite artist, deadmau5, had some music get taken down from Spotify due to copyright issues. I can only listen to those songs on the CD. Thankfully, he's gotten some of the songs back on Spotify, but having the CD is true ownership and guarantees i can listen to any song forever rather than renting the right to listen

As an artist who will always remain at the bottom of the pile, I discarded any notions of profiting off my work a long time ago.
I make music for personal accomplishment, memorable, and sentimental reasons. I may only get a few listeners here and there, but I wholly appreciate every single one of them. :)

Besides the raise prices, i like Spotify idk why everybody hates them so much. Ill die on the hill that its better than Soundcloud and apple music. Ima be honest idc how they treat us i just care about listening to my music.

The reason I couldn’t even jump on board with Spotify was that it couldn’t let me upload my existing collection. Apple Music at least lets me do that.

SO GLAD I've been using Tidal for over a year now. Hell, it dropped from $20 to $11 for everything, albeit, with legal/business changes for that, but still pays more than Spotify.

I've had Tidal for 9 years and would highly recommend it. I was originally attracted to it due to the higher streaming quality than its competitors, the inclusion of music videos, and that it was created by a host of artists including Jay-Z, deadmau5, Kanye, and Daft Punk. I love knowing that it pays artists the most as well.

This is exactly why I download my music directly into my phone's library. No ads, no music I didn't ask for, no bs. And if for whatever reason the audio I downloaded has an issue, like too quiet or loud or unnecessary long intros or outros, I can still edit the audio files on a case to case basis

TH-cam Music was a clewr switch to me. TH-cam Premium and Music for one price is amazing. I could never go back to ads.

As things started changing what i would do is listen to artist on digital and if i liked all the songs, i would support and buy the cd..but now they make it harder to get them.
I would even support my fave Kpop artist and buy their cds from Korea and they give you a LOT for the money. I dont mind supporting in that way...all these companies are getting on my nerves raising the price

I quit spotify a year ago when they increased the price. Been living off of CDs since and I couldn't be happier.
For modern smaller artists I have youtube for now, though I am looking for alternatives.

Rather than paying for a streaming service, i buy a copy of the media directly.

MP3 players were super susceptible to piracy problems, but supporting the artist directly is a great idea, I try to “super thanks” on TH-cam at least once a month, problem is, people just don’t do it. They even feel ripped off when they try it out. If you could get people to do it or pay for something like a cd or a t shirt of their local artist they want to support that would be dope, but other than bringing attention to the matter we haven’t really changed anything/have not added more incentives to do this

I think p2p is great for consumers and media preservation, actually. Last year I actually revived my old iPod touch 4 to carry music on the go. iTunes used to also be a great centralized digital copy distributor that actually paid musicians, but it got discontinued in favor of apple music. So finding where to buy music legit is becoming more and more obscure and decentralized.

the “no pay-outs under 1000 plays” rule is disturbing news to me. I’m a very small artist, i don’t release a lot or very frequently, but now i’m learning spotify is claiming 100% of the streams i’ve made? how am I supposed to grow? afford new equipment? barrier for entry has never been higher. this is getting ridiculous

    I've never used Spotify before...
As a computer repairman, people have always
Just given me copies of the music collection
    When I fixed their computers.

I never understood how we had ipods with 1000s of songs and dropped all that for streaming. I never switched. I kept buying CDs and ripping to my itunes. I have 6000+ songs on my ipod and I love it. I curated a giant Library, im not abandoning that to pay $10/month for the privilege to stream that same library.

Every day I receive an ad of a small artist on the top of my yt feed. TH-cam recommendations are awesome for small artists. Theres even youtubecore playlists because of that.
