Hey, this stuff is always shocking, particularly at the young age of 39, but sounds like you found out quickly and early, it was a relatively minor stroke, you know why it happened, things are fixable and you should be ok to live a full and complete life after whatever surgery is needed? As you say, you need to take your time to make sure your heart and head (including your mental health not just neurologically/physiologically) are both super good enough. Look after yourself and hope you make a full recovery! Thanks for your openness!

I am glad that you have shared this with the public. People need to be made aware that they can have strokes and need to know what to look for and get help ASAP. My sister had a stroke at age 36. Complete paralysis on her left side. Was given the TPA Clot Buster shot at the 3 hour mark, just in time, and she recovered a lot of her lost functions but not all. She was very lucky because the FDA had only just cleared the TPA shot use for stroke 30 days before her stroke. She was the first patient to use the shot for stroke in our state. She would have been profoundly disabled had she not gotten the TPA shot. She was having strokes like what you had where it would cause a loss of function for a short time but then recover. This went on for about a weeks. She went to see her regular doctor and he dismissed it as a symptom of the migraine headache she was having at the time. We cannot believe that he, her doctor, failed to catch the signs that she was having the mini strokes. So glad that your stroke cleared itself and that you found out what is causing them.

I've had family members die from strokes. I'm glad that your sister survived, but I'm frustrated to read that the warning sign of multiple TIAs (Transient Ischemic Attack) was ignored. Unfortunately, I'm not surprised. I was misdiagnosed for most of a decade before the neurological disability I live with was properly evaluated. Please don't let other people think this was a one-off-you have the proof of why forcing a second opinion from an unrelated practitioner is so important. I wish you and your sister the best, given the circumstances, and hope you don't have any more scares like that.

Sorry to hear you had a stroke. Climbing was instrumental in my recovery from a stroke several years ago. I had a stroke in 2019 at age 64 that affected movement over my entire body, but was far worse on my upper extremities and my right side. After my stroke I couldn’t even write my name. Even worse I could no longer play guitar, something I had done for over 50 years! My whole life revolved around playing guitar and I did not want to continue living without it. Lying in bed extremely depressed and suicidal I got the idea that climbing might be the ticket to restore normal movement in my arms, hands and fingers so that I might be able to play guitar again. Climbing is all about pushing your body to the limits, particularly your arms, hands and fingers. With that in mind it seemed like a good plan and there was a climbing gym only five minutes from my house. I used to be into climbing when I was younger, but hadn’t climbed in over 25 years! I really loved climbing and the only reason I quit climbing back then was because it was affecting the tendons in my fingers and negatively impacting my guitar playing. So I started climbing again solely for the purpose of it hopefully restoring normal movement in my arms, hands and fingers. Long story short it worked! I can now play guitar again and in the process I rediscovered my love of climbing!!! It is ironic that I got out of climbing because of guitar, and then many years later, got back into climbing because of guitar. I think that climbing worked to restore normal movement after my stroke similar to the way the Myopro orthotic devices work to help to restore normal upper body movement in stroke victims. I have detailed my recovery on Facebook and TH-cam for those who have also suffered a stroke. It is not an overstatement that climbing probably saved my life.

Interesting to hear your story. I am 41 now but at age 27 I had a stroke. I was on birth control at the time (can increase your risk of clots) and during the work up the doctors also found that I had a hole in my heart. My symptom was “word salad.” I was also lucky that the symptoms resolved quickly and I had a minimally invasive procedure to close the hole. I only have to take a baby aspiring daily and I’ve gone on to have to children and remained active. It hasn’t slowed me down in any way. It’s definitely scary especially when you’re young.

Dang bro, had to have my son tested for this just days after he was born as a precaution due to false reading of his pulse oxygen before leaving the hospital. Glad we did, he's fine, his hole was there at 10 days and gone at his 6 week checkup. Oddly no one ever taught me anything about this heart hole my entire life until that moment when it mattered I obviously looked it up. Turns out our mother pump us their blood into our hearts in that hole, that hole is the only reason we're alive, but if that hole does not close shortly after birth, it can cause issues just like you unfortunately went through. Glad your ok brother. And if anyone out there is curious/worried about this issue go get an echocardiogram. You will need to be getting the exam for general precautionary purposes like a mid age check up thing, you can't just say Im worried I might have a hole in my heart and I want to check to see if I actually do. You can, insurance just won't cover the exam.

ER doc here. Glad your symptoms resolved! And that you had the presence of mine to seek help right away. For what it's worth, among young people, PFO (patent foramen ovale, the "hole" in your heart) is among the more common causes of stroke. Likely you had had a neck CT angiography done, which I would hope showed very little atherosclerosis, or cholesterol deposits, which is what more commonly contributes to strokes in older people. Perhaps your stroke was caused by a little blood clot that formed in your legs while you were sitting on the airplane during your travels. Pro tip for your viewers: always get up and stretch your legs every couple of hours when traveling. Thanks for the high-quality content! This weekend warrior absolutely loves your stuff.

Ergonomics of sitting on insufficiently padded surfaces cause strokes. So you got off a plane and the blood clot you probably got from flying in those terrible seats moved... I am glad to hear you are OK. When you are on planes, stand up and move from time to time, and maybe add a memory foam pad to your seat. It might prevent this from happening again. This just happened to a colleague of mine. He is thankfully still OK and working.
