  • Architect George Clarke meets a London couple hoping to sell their organic cafe in Brixton and spend a £1million bank loan converting a run-down Cornish hotel in St Ives into three houses, one of which will be used as a designer B&B.
Presented by architectural designer Charlie Luxton, Build A New Life follows people leaving the rat-race of the city in pursuit of new lifestyles and new homes in the countryside. The dream houses they are creating are inspiring, architecturally challenging and are all undertaken with a modest budget.

This woman is NOT a nightmare.. she is my hero!! It's blatantly obvious, that the people working on her house are doing half assed jobs (to say the least!)

As a contractor I was expecting a designer to be awful to work for
She was spot on i would be ashamed to put my name to most of that work

What installer argues or questions the owner about the price or choice of their Bath Fixtures? HOW OFFENSIVE. Her property value is none of a Plumber's business at all. She is a peaceful and patient Design Director & works gently with negotiation. When there is no negotiation between a plumbing installer and Owner's personal choices for household fixtures. Her bountiful head of hair also is lovely! How fortunate she is. George is exactly right, they are relaxed people. Thank you for sharing this remarkable couple's teamwork with us. George Clarke's support to them during this entire situation is priceless and invaluable. All three of them are an example to us all! BRAVO!!

We renovated an old Victorian Terrace house in London. We thought it would take about six weeks, but it took two years, even with me on site the entire time, pregnant and with a small toddler. Now I watch restorations, cos they still fascinate me.

My husband laid ungraded slate in 2 rooms but was unable to finish so in comes the "professionals who then lay the rest. My builder friend comes in and says "did someone lay this side and someone else lay the other". My perfectionist husband was able to lay the ungraded tile evenly by just using more mortar under the thin ones. The paid professional tile layers slap it down as fast as they could go. Yes it was a terrible job.

In the end, George, EVERY house remodeling or restoration project is a life's journey that will make you or break you. It just disguises itself as the ideal place to live. I've done it four times. All were a labor of love. But it wasn't until this last one that the remaining ideas on my bucket list of ideas came together under one small roof, and it's the first time I've worried that I wouldn't be able to finish them. That's when you know you've always done what you always wanted to do, and there are no, what ifs, left.

The interiors look so heavy handed and uninspired; so half-baked and thrown together: prissy suburban chairs and lame beanbags surrounded by the most random "art" collection and a whole bunch of lucky bamboo. To think that was done by a professional stage designer …

I've put in slate floors like those. The secret is, that kind of slate is meant for outdoors, or in spaces where you want a rough, authentic, stone floor look, like an English, or New England, kitchen. In which case, the corners of each slate tile, sticking up past a 1/8 in., needs to be shaved to a rounded edge, which means a lot of hand tailored work for nearly every tile. You get the tile cheap, but the expense comes in the time and craftsmanship of instal. A project with it can be a nightmare in the wrong hands, or, the most beautifully unique floor of a lifetime. Finished right and that floor would have been beautiful. They had the hard part finished. All it needed was the corners crafted and a sealer for shine. All of its colors would have emerged. What a shame.

The main sitting room furniture looks like they either ran out of money or just gave up. Bean bag seating.. AWFUL! The rest was stunning and well put together. The reception/sitting room looked like a 13 year old girls club house.

The contractor did a very poor job initially, it was even visible on 480P that the wall tiles in the kitchen were all over the place, not to mention all things which got mentioned in the program.
But they did well, the Organic Panda is still up and running in 2021.

Where did all the money go? Certainly not on the furnishings It If it did they were robbed. It looked like it had been put together by a teenager on a school project from skip salvage. Who cares that it is a top of the range washbasin? Who would know? I am all for recycling and most of my own stuff is from charity shops, but do try and make it look inviting and comfortable. It is not a stage set. Or an art gallery. Real People have to sit, sleep and eat there. Let's hope the food is better than the decor. Pretentious.

Very strange episode. There is no introduction to this project, and the viewer has to just piece it together. It's a perfect lesson in how not to do a job: have a plan and don't change it (even if you change your mind aesthetically), have the person on site actually pay attention so as to reduce poor workmanship, changes and re-dos, and know what your budget is! I don't think the B&B looks really finished but it's basically there. And it's hard to care about the anguish this couple, frankly, caused themselves.
