I felt bad too but one has to understand the professionals point, a greatly estate like theirs has the ability to make an impression, you want to impress guests and journalists, not tone things down to (mute) play it safe (no buzz)

There is words one can choose, and a tone in the voice one can try, to help calm down the upset part. Ruth also has a really annoing schreeching voice, which does not help at all. I got the feeling she pushed for the sake of "good" TV. Anyways, what a GRAND country house and property!! My favorite one in this series.

Tax man always has to be paid straight away as far as I know even if you have to borrow the money to pay..more expense with huge interest.
It's as if governments want people to go under. When you think how huge these estates were and now some of them have mo land left. I know an estate in Ireland which belonged to a friends family. When her mother grew up here in 1800s there was 25000 acres..today all that's left is 1 quarter of the house ( the other 3/4 was knocked to avoid daylight tax which was calculated on the amount of windows in a house...and 175acres.
Another estate beside me has gone from 2500acres to 150acres. Its owner a famous business man has added a lot to the house and bought 100s of acres around it as these farms come up for sale. We're going back to large estates but this time the landlords are Irish and give hardly any employment. The little employment there is is given to shipped in people from foreign lands and they're probably paid a pittance but the only few good paying jobs ate given to Irish but you could count them on 1 hand. At least with the big English landlords they employed so many. Even smaller estates could have at least 20 people employed and a lot also provided room and board. So they call it progress but I've actually got my doubts with so many looking for work and a roof over their heads.

They were a family who had not lived in a grand manner and suddenly they had to make a plan on a grand scale. Not consulting a paint expert was probably part of their habits of economy. So was doing as much on their own (vacuumig minutes before the press came) as possible and going to a local decorator instead of someone who was more widely experienced. I am so happy to learn that they have made a great success of it all.

It's fine that Ruth wants everything modern and beige contemporary, but not everyone likes that. Sarah put a lot of work into those boards and Ruth would have done well to acknowledge the level of work and curb her horrific timing for the critique! These folks aren't professionals, but they're doing their best, and she failed to appreciate the toll of sweat equity.

The people who own this are your normal, run of the mill village people. They are not the super rich who come with all their attitudes and demands. The villagers were fantastic, and they will surely support the new owners as much as possible. Just word of mouth advertising can go a long way in getting the word out about this lovely place. In due time, it will all come together. The blond lady in the blue jacket has wonderful ideas, but all I see are dollar signs every time she has an idea. Top notch designers, paint specialists, etc. all cost a fortune. The work needed here is very substantial. Where is all that money coming from? They may not have it to spend. What a dilemma.

Hopefully they have learned how to style grand, it’s not an easy style in the modern age with most modern styles that are geared towards streamline and mostly neutral palettes. These things takes trial and error, so having those with experience really helps saves them a lot of errors when making decisions that could set them back.
Glad the family pulled through and was easy to work with, understandable with the family past tension of why they hesitated taking on the project, but the building certainly called to them and they reconsidered together to try to make it work. So far, it seems it has thankfully for everyone.

Why don't people listen to expert advice? They could have absolutely "hit the ball out of the park' with the paint color! I agreed with Ruth about the fabrics as well. Those fabrics were not unappealing but just looked 1980's country house rather than on a grand, national, five star level. Beautiful, sweet family though and the property is incredible! Congratulations to them!

As a retired art educator, I understand about trying to open people's eyes to what could be. But I think Ruth's constant attempt to make the every part of the project current London 'High Style", especially on the day the press is coming, is quite ill conceived and often ill timed. It takes people time to change their views, and they don't do it on the word of one person they don't know. You have to show them what could be, and allow them time to encompass that. Is there maybe a little ego involved on Ruth's part? If you think working with these people is not a good fit, just tell them, and make a graceful exit. People come to a country estate as much for how the place feels, as how it looks. Personally, I'd rather have a warm welcome and 'dated' country comfort than the latest, but soulless, decor, and a stuck up proprietor.

I think the views are different, Ruth is there to help them make money and they need to learn it fast. Unfortunately, they need a place want to take pictures of and for that they need the press to like. If they have the money they could afford to learn it and change, but with no money even to affford the heat, they need to think business and they need to accept professional help as well.

I thought some education and perspective might have been in order, like taking them around to some of the successful castles so they could see the standards currently set. But tv productions are edited for drama so maybe she did that, and maybe the family wasn't as recalcitrant as shown. Looks now like the decor is up to date and the place has been doing pretty good business.

Sometimes experience & success deserve a bit of ego, in having done it before. The flowery look wasnt going to make them a constant income. Do you know what kind of money people spend on weddings? Massive amounts, much more than college.

What a strangely austere facade. It's forbidding looking, and even stark. But the grounds are magical and if they can get the interior to be warm and comfortable, it's got a spectacular location and hopefully they've done well with it.

What makes Pentillie so incredibly beautiful is not the house itself so much as the idyllic setting surrounding it.
The river Tamar flowing in a wide serpentine swath through the lush landscape is perfection! The original Lord Tillie had a wonderful sense of perspective with the estate's buildings, the 'castle' being positioned like a jewel in it's lovely setting. It would have been just amazing in the day....
Fast forwarding into 2022, it's really great that the estate is doing so well under the supervision of the owners' daughter. Although it has been renovated to a very modern standard, it still retains a bit of the classical charm.
A very comfortable and classy hotel atmosphere that's in the mode of a modern country house, with some of the antiques and paintings still incorporated... it must be lucrative though nothing like the former grandeur historically it must have been once upon a time.
The modernized mansion could be anywhere, though the surrounding countryside is undoubtedly the most gorgeous in Cornwall 💚

I don't know why Ruth has to be so rude to people. To call the owners formerly "paupers", to make a snarky, condescending crack about " the little woman haberdasher from town", and to say that the outdoor seating arrangements look like it belongs at a youth hostel shows a lack of class on her part.

My issue with some of these shows is that these people call in Ruth to HELP them because they are unable to do it on their own, then do not listen to her or get upset with her. Why did they have her come? Free advertising to be filmed? I get very upset watching professional advise that WAS ASKED FOR being ignored. Ruth has more patience than me. I'd probably have a recorder that played "you asked for my help so listen to me!" And walk out. I guess that is why she is the host! Lol
[I have tried to be sympathetic and look from their side but in the end, I always come back to: "why ask for help if you will not listen to it?" Obviously if you see them now, they did what she said and are very successful. How much time and money was wasted trying to do it their own way? ]
