One thing I would recommend is making a copy of layers you worked hard on, like the cat and set it as invisible. That way if you want to experiment with different ideas on that piece you can just delete it and then use the saved backup copy if you don’t like how it turns out. It saves time from having to hit the undo button a million times or having to reupload the image and cut everything back out again if it’s too far gone. Also, if you back out of the project and open it back up later it sometimes doesn’t save the editing history so you’re unable to hit the redo button. Always good to make a backup copy of some things and set them as invisible just in case.
thank you so much. I'm another oldie I guess, at 63 years of age and got procreate last year with an iPad air and apple pencil to hopefully do more with my art. Here it is a year later and I'm just getting started. But it looks like this is going to be very helpful. I actually am just trying to collage two photos together to then trace to create my reference image for a watercolor painting. I'm excited to have found you and your kind voice and will be back tomorrow to go over this slowly and take notes as you suggested. I will be checking out your other videos as well in case there is one specifically for merging two photos together.
This is so far the best tutorial and i mean it . those millions subscribers newbies don't have that proper skills and information that you do . i appreciate your work here .thanks
This is just the information I was looking for. The actions are logically described and the demonstration is fun to watch. I will be coming back many times to view and learn the many steps in creating a photo art piece. Thank You Valasa, you are the best.
I am so grateful to you! I could select and transform on a drawing but not on a photo and I was wondering why. I thought maybe since it was a painting program that perhaps impossible?. I can't diagnose my issue yet, but at least I know I can use photos. I am excited to follow this step by step to learn the process. Stellar presentation! I think what I have learned that was confusing to me before is that each item removed from a background must begin as its own layer. So if I have a photo with 6 different animals which I wanted to rearrange, I would need to make 6 layers of the entire photo, to extract and separate the animals. I was thinking that I could "cut holes" in one photo to select the animals and pull them out. But what you do is erase the background.
Yes select each animal to give it its own separate layer. The ipad model will set a different layer limit for each canvas size. Larger more 'dpi' (Dots per inch) canvases will have fewer layers and will reach the 'maximum layers' sooner. BUT higher resolution canvases may be necessary for higher quality work you intend to for example print. Erase the background is the version you would use instead when the priority is to save layers. Then use the selection tool to move the animals around. I have many more tips but as this was a simplified 'absolute beginners version' I simply couldn't fit them all. I'll be doing more in this series soon. I am sorry I'm really not sure why your imported photo layer is not selecting, I hope you can resolve this issue soon.
Your tutorial was so descriptive and informing with such an easy manner = that it was a pleasure to learn from you. I wasn’t thinking about the journey but I ended with a process of knowledge that answered my question and much more. Well done.
Quick tip for all. You can just go to your photos on ipad and press and hold what you want to cut from the picture, then press share and save to gallery, and you will have a png of that cat for example.
Great tutorial. Suscribed! There are few good tutorials for beginners. One question: I may get an iPad pro 1st gen (that's the maximum I can afford). Does this app run the same way or maybe needs an older version. Thanks a lot!
I like the practical examples of how to use Procreate at the end. I think one was with a green screen. I'll figure that out next, but really nice overview and thank you! Maybe this will be my cheap version of Photoshop 😊
It was while ago.... I believe I used a large soft airbrush for the large soft areas of shading. I done the shading on its own layer and set the layer mode to multiply. I was adjusting the cat to fit into the scene so using the lighting of the sky. Look at reference of a similar subject lit in a similar way and copy the way the shadows are. For harder edges on the shadow use a harder edged brush. Spectra is a good default brush for shadows on fur as its not 'too hard' edged and has a nice natural workability and texture. I still need to make a shadow painting video guide someday, been on my list for years... You can adjust the size and opacity of brushes AND the layer mode and layer opacity. If the layer is at 100% and not dark enough duplicate the layer and adjust the opacity of the new copy. Once happy merge the two shadow layers into one layer (to save layer space in Procreate). I hope it helps.
This is Procreate app on the ipad pro. It works on apple devices but is best on the ipad Pro. Its very easy to search for it in the App store. It is around $10 USD and gets free updates (one time payment.) An amazing program but you need to invest in the ipad pro hardware to use it. It also requires the apple pencil to get the full use out of. This video is specifically Procreate tips not general digital art tips. I hope this response clarifies.
I have run into a problem that I cannot find help for on the net. I cannot make any marks on any canvas with either my apple pencil or my finger. I am at my wits end. do you have a suggestion? I know that this request may be out of place.
double check your bluetooth is turned on in your settings. (Apple pencil can't connect when bluetooth is turned off). Also ensure your apple pencil is charged. In the 'Prefs' tab under 'Actions' (wrench icon) in Procreate is the gesture controls option under 'gesture controls' then 'general' to 'reset to defaults'. I'd try that if the other two suggestions above don't work. I'd also ensure my ios is fully up to date, battery charge is full and that procreate is updated to the latest version. I hope this helps. Its the best I can offer. Good luck.
Thank You for your assistance. That was very kind of you. Be well and I will be following your classes and hopefully have few tech glitches in the future.
The audio at the beginning was recorded in a room that isn't as good acoustically. I'll be sure to only use the spot in my house that gets the best audio from now on. I already noticed and decided to fix this but good catch in case I hadn't noticed! Due to various feedback I'll be continuing tips in the 'absolute beginners' series. But I also like doing other videos including my pokemon fanfic series and other things! Glad it helped and you enjoyed it.

playback on a slower speed, and pause and take notes. Its intended that you pause, take notes or watch multiple times. TH-cam also has playback speed options, as I said you can slow down the playback speed.
