  • 3rd morning flight of the day, and this one got weird.
iPhones have an air pressure sensor, which means they can be used as a variometer to determine if you're getting lift or not. I use an app called "FlySkyHy" that makes use of that sensor (and, while not as accurate as purpose-built variometers, it is many many hundreds of dollars cheaper). About a minute into my flight, I discovered a downside to using my phone as a variometer: I got a call. I hung up on them. :) I need to set my phone to Do Not Disturb before flying.
Today, I'd been working on two goals: (1) starting the downwind, base, and final approaches with more speed and (2) getting good landings where I'm not running them out. Weeeeell, the first went well, but the landing? I flared too soon, popped up a few extra feet above the ground, didn't hold the flare, and landed with forward momentum. I could tell the nose was going to hit the ground (which is called a "whack"), and it did--in very slow motion. If you listen closely, right as the nose hits the ground, you can hear someone yell "WHACK" from across the field.
I haven't had a whack in quite some time, so here it is as a reminder for me to stay humble! :)
