@@Darth_Bateman don't forget that despite everything they have been through and the fact they have huntsmen and huntress licences, the main cast in this fight never finished there first year at Beacon and have been fighting almost exclusively Grim and random goons since volume 2, Emerald isn't exactly know to have exceptional combat skill and Ironwood has been fighting this war for decades as well as being one of Ozpin's go to people. If he hadn't been betrayed by Winter he probably would have won quite handily

One of my favorite details about this fight is that every time Ironwood notices that Winter is fighting him, his face is one of complete shock. Like he just cannot believe what he is seeing. It's tragic but man is it a great addition.

@@FacelessCrowd @Bartender Artist "If you were one of my men, I'd have had you shot" Ironwood, volume 3. Ironwood, bringing a whole army to Beacon. Ironwood, bringing a WHOLE FLEET to Beacon. Ironwood, the man who treats his school like a slave-soldier training facility where if you don't follow orders, you're immediately dismissed. Ironwood, the one who HAND PICKED Ace-ops as his most entrusted squad, the squad that were willing to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity for him barring Marrow and maybe Vine, but MOST ESPECIALLY Harriet, who still stands to be his most loyal SOLDIER. What other soldiers in our own human history have said "we're just following orders"/"just follow orders and don't ask questions"?
He has been and always will be an authoritarian. Literally the one line, again, "If you were one of my men, I'd have had you shot." Ironwood has ALWAYS HAD villainous tendencies. Just because the authoritarian was on our side for the first 7 volumes, doesn't mean he was a good guy the whole time. The moment his actions and wants shifted more drastically from the main cast, is when the authoritarian continues to show what an authoritarian does when he's challenged. Detains or kills whatever and whoever is trying to oppose them and take control with an iron fist. People act like just because he claims to "want to do the greater good" that suddenly he's a good guy. You know what other leaders in history claiming they were doing it for the good of the people? Hitler. Mussolini. Stalin. Mao Zedong. All leaders that claim they're doing things for the good of the people and yet millions die under their rule.

@@RikuSage I get the gist of what you are saying but I think you should remember, another authoritarian figure was Vlad Dracule III, who used brutal scorched earth tactics, public executions, impalings and other more villainous actions to singlehandedly route an entire army ,and saving his country. And many of those that he executed were dissenters and deserters within his country.
Again, I agree that Ironwood has the qualities of a tyrant, for a better word, but his methods are too rigid and closed minded, because at the end of the day, he's a soldier, and soldiers are trained to always react to threats with force first, even when such force is the wrong course of action.

Ooooo, is that civilized discussion in a replies section? How rare!
(Crunchyroll user, I havent seen the most most recent episode on roosterteeth so don't shoot me)
Ironwood is shown to be incredibly callous and heavy handed in his judgement, he is a flawed character- as most characters in the series are, Yang and her rage, Blake and her tragic backstory- each of them had a reason for what they did.
Ironwood is no different, he has the position, strength, and willpower to do what needs to be done- so what kind of man would he be if he didn't do it? His semblance allows him to act with an iron fist and do what needs to be done regardless his personal quarrels/opinions making him the perfect man to make the most practical choices and thus a general- When he prioritized Atlas over mantle, it wasn't out of disdain or lack of care for mantle, it was simply the better choice in that scenario, when he made the decision there was no emotion involved, he just chose what made sense
For refrence, I'm sure you all know this (but for those of you who don't and have stumbled across this with no context whatsoever) that every character in RWBY is based off of some fairy tale character (Yang- Goldilocks, Blake- the Beauty from Beauty and the beast)
Ironwood is based off of the tin man, the character in (DAMMIT THE NAME SLIPS ME) anyways, the Tin man lacked a heart which shows in Ironwood's ability to act without emotion, everything he does is calculated and precise, deliberate and concise. Robotic. While we humans have built machines to make yes and no decisions based on practicality. This is a unique case because it is the opposite, Ironwood built himself into a man to make the most practical decisions, creating a rift between the machine and man in himself, I am personally interested to see the meltdown, I would imagine that he is exhausted and hasn't felt anything for about 2 years now, and I wonder what the first thing we are going to see from him emotionally is, that's my piece, peace out

At first I thought they did a mix between Emerald's VA and Penny's VA, (like they've done for some Oz/Oscar lines in the past) but upon re-watching this it sounds like Penny's VA just did an impression of Emerald -- either way, I really like the cadence and delivery of that line. Quick reminder that so far all the headmasters are based on Wizard of Oz characters. Furthermore, each of them has acted exactly how I imagine those characters would act if Dorothy wasn’t there for them and the Wizard got killed. The Cowardly Lion remained cowardly and sold out to the witch. The Tin Man never got his heart, but still kept trying to do good despite his lack of compassion. Genuine Question: Why do some people think Ironwood was heartless from the beginning? The guy was literary protective of every one of the people he has worked with and have seen or learned what they have been through. He literally called Jacques out when he said he had a half mind to possibly slap Weiss in front of everyone. It also seemed he was more of a father figure to Winter and Winter loved him back, not just respected him and I had the feeling one of the reasons Winter was so reluctant to leave him was because he had helped her so much. But that's just me.

Or the girl who was working for salem, was personally responsible for the death of penny and Fall maden, the reason yang became hated during the tournament, who has used her literal powers of deception to trick the main cast during volume 3, and just shows up one day.

i think the biggest factor is his semblance which solidifies his resolve and allows him to carry through with decisions. he is SO set on his plan being the right thing to do that anyone who fights against it is bad and that any casualties are worth the risk. it's like qrow's semblance. it doesn't disappear when his aura breaks. its there always. and i don't think he realized what he'd done until the very end because of his hyper-focus. and i imagine this is the hardest his semblance has ever had to work so it may have taken a toll on him from an empathetic standpoint. the lion was a coward. the tinman lost his heart. he was a kind man once. but his need for a solid resolve cost him everything. even his own empathy.

It's kind of funny how everyone in the comments hope Ironwood "gets what he deserves" because in a sense...I feel bad for him. Now, don't get me wrong. I do NOT agree with him, and I completely agree he needs to pay for what he's done. But at the same time his intentions aren't malicious. He's not like Cinder, Tyrian, or Salem. He's not trying to hurt people, he genuinely believes that this is the only way to save Atlas. Again, he's completely in the wrong, but that's what makes him interesting and I feel some bit of pity of him. He's so focused on "saving Atlas" that he can't see the people he's hurting along the way.
Edit: So, sadly I have to put this edit because people keep telling me how the writers ruined Ironwood or how in the right he was for what he did. I'll just be blunt, I don't agree with either statement. Do I think Ironwood was a great character? Yes! Will I miss him? Yes! But no, I do NOT think he's in the right. He clearly went too far. My original comment was just to say that I do pity him because his end goal was not to take over the world or whatever. He became so desperate that he became the very thing he was fighting against. And no, I don't think the writers ruined him. He's always been this paranoid. However one thing led to another that pushed him past the breaking point. And finally, yes. I do agree RWBY shouldn't have lied to him, but don't use that as an excuse to defend him. In the end he was still WRONG. He still was willing to sacrifice innocent people just to save Atlas. In this case, I feel both parties are wrong. However Ironwood even more so because of how much he let the situation escalate. And that's all I'm gonna say on the subject. If you don't agree, fine. But I won't be changing my mind either.

I think it's because we expect bad people to be bad. It's not a shock when Cinder or Salem behave the way they do. But many felt betrayed by Ironwood, (I know from his perspective he thinks he's the one who was betrayed) and it's because he went from such a high point welcoming the heroes, upgrading their weapons, giving them their licenses and honestly acting the part of a capable leader in absence of Ozpin. Especially after Lionheart became a cowardly traitor we dared to hope for better, and after the incredible fight with Watts he became a favorite for many. Really a shame how he turned out.

To this day I'm still pissed off that team rwby got salty about ozpin lying to them about not being able to kill Salem (even though they could always capture her to stop her), but then immediately afterwards continuously lie to Ironwood about Salem, lie to Ironwood about the relic, and then leak all of his confidential plans to a revolutionary force that has no idea Salem even exists. Even after Ironwood did so much to make them trust him. And people still wonder why Ironwood was so ticked off and stopped listening to them on Volume 7 Episode 11...

@@DarkCircles698 That's not bad writing though, everything they do in V7 makes them hypocrites but not poorly written. The bullshit and actual bad writting starts when the show tries to justify that hypocrisy and make RWBY/ORNJ look like they're right when they're clearly not.

That's the point, you know: that RWBY realized what it was like to be in Ozpin's shoes, keeping secrets for the greater good. That it bit them in the ass wasn't bad writing, it was characters with their own biases and preconceptions and lacking perfect information making a mistake, learning from it, and resolving to do better moving forward.
James was in a hell of his own making. He trusted nobody, not even his own fellow heads of state. Robyn was only resisting him because he looked like a shady power-hungry dictator that was letting GRIMM ROAM THE GODDAMN STREETS rather than do anything to patch up Mantle's defenses, AND as far as she knew, his pet war machine was caught on camera butchering her supporters. Blake and Yang realized that, and by telling her the truth, they turned an enemy into a potential ally. The MOMENT James and Robyn put a little trust in each other, they were WINNING. Then he saw that damn chess piece, and his paranoia and fear took the wheels and sent him over the edge into insanity.

    • @VelCroweBar
      @VelCroweBar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@lazurman976 What are you talking about? You remember James Trusted the ace-ops, Winter, Penny, and Team RWBY with everything he knew right? He even gave them the relic back, something that a lying dictator wouldn't do. He gave them, new weapons, he gave them their hunter's licenses. Granted I think it's stupid he didn't tell the council to begin with, but then again, Jaq Schnee got on the council and he was working with Salem's scientist douchebag.
As if that wasn't bad enough, Blake and Yang decided that a random woman who's been stealing supplies from the Amity plan they agreed to help make, and someone they don't know at all, is trustworthy enough to leak the plans to... Which ends up biting them in the ass when Ironwood's office is infiltrated and he's rightly extremely cautious and paranoid.
Also Ironwood was quite literally not letting the Grimm roam the streets of mantle. He had patrolling robots, soldiers guarding the hole in the wall, soldiers in mantle, rocket airships patrolling, and Penny (the protector of mantle) which we see when the Grimms start attacking due to Jaq, a counselor, handing out his credentials to Salem's team.
If RWBY, had told ironwood everything after Ironwood told them his plan, Ironwood would have been informed and most likely form a different plan to deal with these problems with the correct information. And if Yang and Blake didn't go behind their backs to inform an unknown vigilante about his plans, he most likely would have listened to them instead of trying to arrest them due to lack of trust.

Love the fight, have mixed feelings about the season. I don’t mind Ironwood becoming an antagonist, and in season 7 I could rationalize/excuse any decisions that felt weird. I could even buy him murdering that one guy , but there was no way you can expect me to believe he would nuke mantle. That’s literally the dumbest thing ever. Ironwood is controlling and believes everyone should trust him even though he doesn’t trust others much: hence why I got him going against the protagonists and his decision to try and save atlas. But there’s no way he would kill millions of people out of spite. When Penny got the maiden powers he woulda been pissed, but he also would have used fhe opportunity to get as many more Mantle people in Atlas. Time was of the essence but he had room to do that and hunt for Penny and the others. And even if he did, after he lost, he sure as fuck wouldn’t throw a tantrum and try to kill everyone because Atlas was falling. He would be pissed, but he would have realized there was no point fighting anymore. But the worst offense? He let Salem and Cinder leave… AFTER DOING EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO STOP THEM! HE WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SHOT AT THEM WITHOUT QUESTION!! HE WOULDA THROWN HIS EMPTY GUN AT THEM OUT OF PRIDE!!!! He wouldn’t just aim, then get all depressed.
