Did a "restoration" on one of these myself (early 2008 mod) and I love it. Totaly usable with macOS mojave, and I even got the top spec one with a 2.6ghz CPU and upgraded 6gb's of ram (with an SSD ofcourse). I also purchased a 20$ battery replacement like you, but it died after a year. Might have been because I kept it discharged for a longer period though

I still have my 2007 MacBook Pro. The version you have is the one my mother has and the one I have has a little bit of a faster processor and a little bit better video card. I upgraded both of ours to four gigs about eight years ago and bought a new battery for mine about two years ago because I was using it for a gig and the battery finally died and I was mortified that if the power source came undone that all of the music I was doing would be completely gone. I have old Mac computers and I also have new Mac computers as well as iPads and iPhones and all that other crap.
I love watching people upgrade old Macs because you can still use them. I mean literally last year I was doing a DJ gig with my old 2007 MacBook Pro running Traktor scratch pro with A controller and a sound card. I mean it takes a second to boot up but other than that everything I’ve used it for still works.
The only issue is that I am still on iOS 10.6.8 and I want to upgrade the operating system but when I did that on my G5 all of the programs would not work anymore. I literally just updated the G5 to 10.6.8 and all the programs that were on it will not run.
Do you have any suggestions for that? I have a few programs that I have reinstalled but they still are basically not working. I don’t know if I should go back to the old operating system somehow or just reformat everything and try to start from scratch.
Fabulous video and I wish I could take apart a laptop as well as you do. I’m pretty good with a desktop but a laptop is nowhere near your skill level... Thanks for a fantastic video

I need to replace the whole display (the part that you flip up when you open it (cracked at the bottom on both sides). Is this difficult to do? Seems like I should be able to unscrew fewer screws than THIS project to accomplish it. NOW I'm wondering if I should just replace the memory/batter/ etc in the replacement parts mbpro since it's structurally pretty solid except for one of the keys.

Then I’ll clean it up and put new thermal paste. It did get really hot so I’m hoping this will help.

Actually, those macbooks from 2007 and 2008 have the worst gpu's ever made, all of those 8600m's will die, because its not the soldering that is the problem, but its a bonding issue inside the chip between the silicon and the die. The chip litteraly cooks itself to dead, and when the gpu is in a cold state after getting to hot, the macbook won't turn on because the gpu is braindead, there are some tutorials online that show how to revive those macbooks by wrapping them inside a blanket and let them sit in it while turned on, or putting the logic board inside an oven for about 7 minutes, it doesn't melt the solder, it gets hot enough to rebond the silicon and the die back to a working state and the laptop will work again, only for a while. So when you reball or reflow the gpu chip, you actually just rebond the silicon to the die, letting you believe you actually repaired the laptop while all you did was extending the life of the laptop, there is another youtuber named Louis Rossmann who covered this exact same issue and has a very in dept story about those macbooks with this exact cpu

@@rich1051414 the gpu dies when you use it for extended periods of time, excessive heat kills those things, i found a solution for the poor airflow on these macbooks, if you replace the aluminum cover that goes over the ram with the grid metal that you can find in most speakers to protect them, and cut and bend it exactly like the aluminum cover off this macbook, you can than secure it with the battery, and if you take a piece of paper and hold it against this grid metal plate while the fans are on full trothle, you will see that the piece of paper will stick to this home made vent, it will significantly help with cooling, and the gpu and cpu temps will be reduced by 10 degrees. These laptops are not hard to open and clean, just it looks hard but is not. Just be careful with removing the flex cables, the other cables and the logicboard. btw when I was a newbie, when I start with hardware repairs, this model was one of the first that I open and repair. On this model just use good and quality thermal paste and in Mac you can use Mac Fan control software, you can set manual RPM to keep CPU and GPU temps down and avoid any overheating in the future . Mostly on this models the manual fan range is from 55 - 65 Celsius ( 55C min RPM - 65C - 90% Fan RPM )

Steve Jobs macbooks really do rock. This is coming from a Windows fanboy. Awesome design, upgradable, well built generally speaking

You are right bro, back then the MacBooks were much more quality and much innovative than today's MacBooks

Nice one! I'm wondering what other things you had to fix on the board. Can you tell us? Thanks!

Ooo, I have this same laptop (slightly newer, actually, early 2008). It's a very nice machine, and is nice to have around.

How do you install the mac os x recovery? I'm stuck and my new ssd doesn't recognize any usb booteable (my mac is the same model than yours). My problem is that the old hdd doesn't allow me to recover the os X el Capitan because it isn't available on the app store and doesn't recognize any usb.
    Hope you can help me!

Nice video! I have a late 2006 mbp and I have put it on the oven 5-6 times and it is now 4 years with no gpu issues. At 08:00, what other issues did you encountered on the logic board? Cheers

To remove paper stickers, spray with ordinary wax furniture polish (Mr Sheen, Pledge etc), and leave to soak for 10 minutes. Stickers will slide off :) Learn't this from an antiques dealer who used to buy furniture at auction with lot numbers stuck all over.
