You should absolutely do a Nu Disco/House set! For a while a had the issue (and sometimes still have) of making the transitions too long and these tips really help. I've started using the sampler more for acapellas and that really takes the mix up a notch and sounds way more pro! I really hope to get a 4 channel controller in the future since it would fit my mixing and music style!
As a DJ that's been playing for a long time and even held residencies here in oz and overseas, i still love to watch these videos and get ideas and inspirations. I do have a habit at times of 'playing it safe' depending on the gig and venue and especially when i record mixes online. I do get a bit creative from time to time and i love to get ideas from videos like these. I would love to be able to link you to a mix or two of mine and get feedback. Good or bad. I'm not an ego driven DJ and do believe that no matter how long you've been playing for or how much experience, you always have room to grow and learn more!
Your enthusiasm is so uplifting and I know u have so much love for what you do, we can all see that in your videos. Loving that disco is back in fashion (61year old DJ) so I lived thru some amazing times on the dance floors. Please do a Nu-Disco showcase… there is so much new and re-edits of wonderful classics from the past. Love House, Deep House and soulful house…… but Disco… it’s just a genre that is timeless.
Man... your videos are so fu*king rad! I've been a bedroom/hobbyist DJ in L.A. for a couple years now and I'm thinking about finally leveling up my skills. I just played a set for my friends at my 40th bday party and they went nuts and I cant' wait to have that feeling again! So I'm checking out DJ tips on TH-cam and found your courses. At first I was thinking of going with the course from Crossfader but your whole vibe is so damn fun!! I think you might have just found another student!
@@Joeybaritaud Thanks man! I'm only a few hours into the course and I feel like I've already learned so much about properly preparing for a set and getting the right phrasing for my transitions that I didn't know before. I have a bunch of friends who are DJs and I can't wait to blow their minds in a month or two with how much my skills have leveled up after this course!
Awesome mate, yes yes yes! Please more Nu Disco! Any controller! Grab the course guys! I went from getting nowhere and questioning myself to being part of the CRT stream in a month!
Love new disco mixing with house, also it’s great when you hear classic disco samples and cover versions in new disco. You’re Still the best TH-cam DJ master with your unique approach to teaching. I do a lot of sample drops and tease tracks in, I can’t scratch but I don’t worry about that.
All the mixes were great. Like you say, a time and a place for each one. That 3rd mix tho was amazing. I feel it is worth a mention that with using accapellas between songs it is worth pre-planning. An out of key acapella can sound awful (I know, I've done it 😂) so although it's great to be inspired and mix on the fly. Checking the acapella suits the key of BOTH tracks beforehand will really gel it all together. Fantastic video. Love your content
This is exactly where i'm at. At 6mos these are the things I think about all the time. At the same time i'm just picking songs and going for broke. I don't have a plan because, well, I don't need one. I find it more exciting to just pick songs and find out where the mix is going to take me and what challenges lie ahead. Nu Disco is becoming one of my favorite styles to play. Hard Techno will forever have my heart tho. I would love a Nu Disco set with what ever cofig you choose man. I appreciate you.
Thats also my way to go...Just freestyling around and Sure find some Songs that really Match together and remember them next time 😀 dont have any Controller help..Just doing vinyl.
@@tonyscholer1493 dont get me wrong. I dont want to say this or that is better. But i also love it when you dont know what you are heading for...with all those cue points on controllers it is to linear for me.
@@dafunkem I see the value in them for live gigs, planned sets etc. As Andrew says it's good to have a plan and be prepared. I feel if you learn and can get through the scramble of finding things naturally, it will make planning and sculpting a killer set much easier down the road. If you learn in chaos, you are less likely to fail when chaos happens.. 😄
This thread is very interesting as it's something I often think about. Lately I have been doing sets without prep but I am prepping Mondays Nu disco set as we speak and in truth it's a lighter tighter than freestyling. I think when playing live, my best sets were always the ones where I did both - had some cool pre planned combos but also ready the crowd.
Yes, search my channel, it was called "using the sampler like a 3rd deck" however my course also covers this in more detail - if you want a discount code let me know and I'll hook you up :)
Great video. Interesting rarely do I ever see or hear the concept of "Teasing". That is so old school but still a relevant technique and probably where the idea of double/triple drops came from. It's a great way for a DJ to test if their vision of the future of where they want to take the dance floor. Personally I like long transitions built around concept #2. If the outro is long enough or loopable and the intro has a long enough runway or loopable also I start the mix early and line it up so as the outgoing tracks energy drops the first real recognizable phrase of the incoming starts. My favorite type of transition is where the average person can't tell where it started or stopped. Sometimes if compatible I even overlap the rhythms but this does require talent and experience to know if they are compatible or not. Same for vocals. In general you shouldn't overlap vocals but in certain instances its possible and can provide interesting transitions.
great video Andrew!! just wanted to say thanks for all the videos in the past year these and more importantly the CRDJS course..... stumbling across your channel during lockdown last year inspired me to get back into DJing and even taken it a bit more seriously ..i even have a fortnightly show on a radio station now and im 50 next year ha ha .......best dj tutor on the internet 100%
Yayyyy for nu disco 🕺 Thanks so much for this video, it has inspired me to improve my transitions. The teaser sample is so creative and exciting- for the DJ and the dancefloor
Hot cues are our friend for bang on transitions. Find the point your track comes in, set one 32 or 64 beats before it and set one 32 or 64 beats before you want to be out of it. It's hard to find club gear that doesn't have at least 3 hot cues available these days.
@@no0kieNRW I'd like to say that there's some special skills to it, but really it just comes to you after a lot of listening for where you want to go in and out. For the counting 32 or 64, use beat jump which is built into Rekordbox or remember that 32 beats is 8 bars an 64 beats is 16 bars and count the bars on the beat grid.

I've found dropping the next tune in while the first one is still going strong, and very slowly eq blending till the second tune kicks in works really well. It means some of my mixes are two or three minutes long. I'll sometimes then hit a hot cue to a loop of the first tracks groove and bring it in and out. It sounds like it works to me, but I'm a novice and experimenting with different transitions to stand out a bit
