    a tip, as its the UNIVERSAL, not the Super23 it has a unique back on the rear, it allows for the standard ground glass, but can unclip it, and add adaptors (eg, a "R"- for mamiya RB backs) and others, the polaroid fits directly on, the mamiya press (super 23) can have its back the big bulge thing on as well (M adaptor)- you can tell it by the bar atop, and two 'wing nut' locks, so every option is open, even the 645 back (the one from RB67); so many film options, and great for economy, as the 67 allows 10 shots, not the 8 of the 6x9, so allowing testing of the rangefinder, etc. while keeping costs down.

  • @floydianslip007
    @floydianslip007 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try using the mamiya 23 with the back movements, on a tripod.. Changing the focal plane to diagonal etc can bring interesting results... Especially with close up photographs... A tripod can bear the weight for a while too, so u can have coffee n cake & take ur time while finding & seeing a world class photograph..

      Right on, a tripod helps, but that just means lugging around even more heavy stuff 😅 normally I just live with the weight. The image quality definitely makes up for it.

    great industrial shooting :-) , some tips, if it is heavy ( some youtubers (Bop Leng) say
    ~2.5 KGs {lens, back, handle ON}) use a monopod, with say a manfrotto RC-2 quick release plate ball head on it; this gives flexability, you can use it as a hiking stick(for yourself), to rest the camera on, for instance, while changing lens, or film back, and it is portable, so if you had this system in a backpack, the monopod can telescope down to a size where it will fit on the side of the backpack, in special pockets/straps that is designed for it.
    I say RC-2, as this is the one with the lever release, 1/2 a turn and it's off, and this is easier to use one handed ( one to operate the lock, one to hold the camera!)- also this has a
    "d-ring" screw attachment, so NO tools needed to tighten it!, less to have to remember to take with you. One other suggestion, to show off the camera a bit more, we are interested in it, and I get this is a heavy thing, so get a mono-pod which has feet ( three tripod legs, which hinge at the bottom), this allows you to step a little away from it, more if you use a tripod, so making working around it a little less cumbersome, and it will allow us to see more of you, rather than just a shaddow waving, nice to see it, but would be better to see you "in the field"
    rather than only a "report" a while after the trip.

      I think I’ve seen that video too at some point! He had a fascinating vision. I have a Mamiya 23 too, but haven’t had the chance to play around with it much either. I really enjoy the Universal system though. Quirky beasts 😀

    I had 4 of these cameras, the 50 mm wide angle is their best lens, so sharp and a nice wide view. I sold all of them because film was getting hard to buy and get processed.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, such a shame that you sold them! I buy all my film online and develop it myself, it’s not that hard! And the examples from the 50mm were stunning, I think the 50mm is going to be the next lens I buy for it! 😀

    Liked and subbed ! I'm waiting for a Universal Press with 6x9 back and a 100mm lens. Also waiting on a Mamiya Press G with a Graflok adapter but no back yet. It has a 90mm but it needs a CLA . They are pretty reasonable on Ebay but hard to find good lenses that don't need work. Mamiya makes great camera's that were very innovative though a bit ungainly ! But I love weird cameras a long as they work nicely ! Larry

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub! Mamiyas are great cameras for sure! Very interesting cameras and excellent image quality. The only downside is the weight, they are all huge ungainly beasts. My Mamiya C220 and my Universal both have a history of giving me a chance to put my back out of commission for a few days. As for CLA: It really depends, I find Japanese sellers tend to be quite accurate in their description. None of the lenses I got from there as fully functioning ever had any problems. Would recommend.

      Hello again. Have had my Mamiya's for a couple weeks now and found out how easy to clean the lens is and to get stuck apertures working correctly again ! I now have a 90 mm and a 100. I have another 6x9 back , and looking for a graphlok film back for the Press G also. Really like these beasts and plan on using often. Hope you do more and keep me inspired ! Larry

      Ah, nice! I wish I had known it was that great, I would have bought tons of it too! Now prices are kinda getting excessive! I might try shooting instax in it though! Not quite instant then, but at least it’s a similar format! I have the 100mm f/3.5 on this one by the way!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems great to me, very natural framing! I haven’t shot it wide open though, so I can’t say much about sharpness yet. Judging from my Mamiya C220 glass though I doubt there will be any problems with it, Mamiya glass is usually excellent! I’m kinda tempted by the 60mm. I usually shoot a 35mm on my Leica so, I’m always drawn to wide angle.

      Oh, my Speed Graphic is definitely worth it too! It’s just that carrying it up a mountain just in case I find something worth photographing is a bit much 😂 better to plan the shots with the Mamiya and then come back with the 4x5 when I have a specific shot in mind! The Mamiya is definitely a lovely camera!

      Lilly Schwartz naja, ich weiß nicht, ich bin ja selbständig und habe die Einschränkungen nur seitens meiner Kunden mitbekommen, für mich ist alles so weitergelaufen wie gehabt, bis auf dass ich jetzt alles alleine mache weil das Unternemen jetzt nur noch auf mich läuft. Ansonsten hatte ich einen Fall im Bekanntenkreis, hier ist halt Maske angesagt. Wohingegen wir am Ijsselmeer waren und man dort sogar ohne Maske im Supermarkt einkaufen konnte, es gab Desinfektionstücher zum abwischen der Griffe am Einkaufswagen und das war’s.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ist so seltsam wie unterschiedlich das überall gehandhabt wird. Hier gibt’s jetzt Maske überall in der Öffentlichkeit auch wenn man den Abstand halten kann, also auch am Strand. 2 Monate war super strikter Lockdown, war dann die ganze Zeit zu Hause, nicht mal zum Einkaufen. Das nervte etwas, aber die Zahlen waren hier ja auch krass. Bei mir sind auch zwei Freundinnen gestorben in der Zeit, beide angeblich nicht covid, aber beide Risikogruppe und in der gleichen Woche als es so schlimm war 🙁 da wurde auf jeden Fall viel mit den Zahlen gemauschelt. Ich bin ja eh auch Risikogruppe, also halte ich mich weiterhin von Leuten fern und geh nur in den Wald. Aber so viel anders als normal ist es jetzt auch nicht mehr, ich geh ja während der Touri Saison sowieso nicht in die Stadt, weil’s in den letzten paar Jahren so krass überlaufen war. Also eigentlich eh gleich wie sonst abgesehen von Maske wenn man jemanden im Wald trifft. Schön, dass ihr trotzdem in den Urlaub fahren konntet trotz der Situation!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since it’s a rangefinder it doesn’t really matter. Whatever helps you to estimate better. There are viewfinder masks for this if I remember correctly. Hard to find sometimes, but maybe they could be 3D printed?

  • @MkeNewmS
    @MkeNewmS 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, Lilly, I saw another video of you shooting a Mamiya press cam in mountains, I’m wondering, how how you focus it? Because it is a rangefinder (correct me if I’m wrong ☺️), and while waiting for my Press cam to arrive so far, I yet haven’t figured out how to focus this camera correctly. Could you give me an short advice? (Lol, Maybe it’s a nice idea for a short video 😄)
    Good luck and nice shots 🙂

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Михаил! You are right, the Mamiya Press is a rangefinder camera! Rangefinders are very easy to focus. There is a patch in the middle of the viewfinder that superimposes the image again. You move the focusing ring until both images are aligned. With SLRs you kinda have to trust your eyes to know when the image is sharp, but with a rangefinder it’s totally obvious when it’s sharp even with relatively bad eyesight. As for making a video about rangefinder focusing: There are already many videos about that! Just look for “How to focus a rangefinder camera”! You’ll find many examples. Some rangefinders have better or worse rangefinder patches. Leicas are usually best, but the Mamiya one isn’t bad actually. I’m sure you’ll get the hang quickly!

      I shot the Polaroids on a 100mm lens. I‘ve only shot instax mini in this and it covers that completely. I‘m guessing square would cover too, but wide might be a bit too wide, not sure! Something to try out!

    • @oussmayo
      @oussmayo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LillySchwartz Okay cool! Did you load the instax into the polaroid back or how did you do it? Did the focus point work correctly to where the instax photo sits? Would be cool to see how the pictures turned out if you have them posted somewhere! cheers!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally shoot instax mini in a 2x3 sheet film back with a little 3D printed adapter. If you want to see that, check out my lockdown self portrait video where I do it on a Rolleicord. I haven’t tried using the Polaroid back for this yet, sounds like I should give it a go 😀 the easiest way to have certainty about coverage for instax wide would be to shoot it in a sheet film back on a 4x5 camera. People have converted land cameras to 4x5 but I don’t know whether they had to move the focal plane to pull off full coverage.

    Cinestill is temperamental, sometimes it gives you good photos sometimes its too blue.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the colour temperature of the surrounding light sources. It becomes somewhat more predictable if you have an option to control the light sources around you. It is meant for cinema work after all where lighting is tightly controlled.

    • @monsieurgolem3392
      @monsieurgolem3392 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LillySchwartz ok, that explains it.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  ปีที่แล้ว

      In Cinema work they also use colorimeters when they shoot film, to make sure they’re hitting the right temperature. It’s really a different way of working where everything is minutely controlled. And we just head out onto the streets, barely even using a light meter 😅 I find that a lot of the cinestill problems can be corrected in editing. Not the easiest film to colour correct, but I quite enjoy it nevertheless.

    Leica on steroids.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mamiya definitely has the image quality, that’s for sure, but the feel of it isn’t quite Leica! It gets in the way a bit more. I think handling wise a Mamiya 7 would be more like it or probably also a Fuji GW690II which also has the nickname “Texas Leica”! Doesn’t mean I don’t like the Mamiya Universal, just the form factor and workflow are quite different from the Leica. I like it for what it is, a really versatile system that can shoot a lot of different aspect ratios and has some really nice lenses too!
