- On this video we can see the disassembly of a 2006 4L60E transmission. The most common failure on these units is 3rd. clutch burn up, the reaction sun shell and the 2-4 band. Failure on these transmissions is not necessary the way it is treated, rather is these common or pattern failures. Valve body ware is also another issue and can be corrected installing a correction kit of your choice.
Used your video and a book from Amazon, did my tranny on 2002 Cadillac Escalade. Big THANKS! I am no mechanic but was able to rebuild the tranny, upgraded sun gear shell and shift kits. 10 month and still running. $350.00 including oil! Used radiator hose with clamps to compress the Teflon seals - most important part of the project. Thank you very much man!
your videos are the best that i have seen on transmissions! you are a true technician and a great teacher! i've been a mechanic for 18 years on auto and diesel and have learned alot about automatics by watching your great videos! thank you for taking the time to teach the rest of us about these transmissions!
You're welcome
I need a trans.rebuild where are you located
Sir you are amazing to watch. You hands move with the precision of a surgeon, I very much enjoy watching you work.
Hiran I rebuilt honda odessey 2004 following your instructions. You are great and a blessing to people like me, that like to learn at 70 yrs. old
I have rebuilt a couple transmissions in the past. I am no pro but I did pull it off successfully. Having done it first hand though I have to say this guy is like a transmission ninja. I do not remember the dis-assembly being anywhere close to 30 minutes on the ones I did. I must have spent a solid 3-4 hours and we are talking 47RE, 350, 700R4 transmissions that I did. This guy really knows his stuff.
Understanding how engines work is easy...transmissions on the other hand...not so easy at all...and this is why I will NOT touch transmissions...you the MAN Hiram...my hats off to you.
You describe in great detail how to disassemble this miracle of technology, even to show short and long screws should be put, hats off! bravo!
Great Presentation. I am an Automotive Teacher at one of the Technical High Schools in Connecticut. After a few theory lessons, I have my 12th graders tear down and re-assemble a 4l60E. We have a 1999 1500 5.3 truck we test them in. Your video is an excellent addition to our activity and the kids were watching it on their phones. Thanks! Kirk
It is like a magicians hat, stuff just keeps coming out.
great analogy. lol
I have a lot of respect for trans techs, I love engine building and repair, but since I have very little trans experience videos like this really show what you guys know, it's really cool
Wow your very well spoken, quick and expierenced. I rock and roll through most automotive jobs as a pro mechanic, however transmissions are a whole new monster. Great video!
Great video bro...
Show how hard difficult this transmission can be. You explain the components well and the experience you have shows.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Fantastic job
Hiram Gutierrez i am replacing a sun shell and when i put it and the planted gear in the shaft is not coming far enough up to install snap ring why is doing this ?

Yung L.A. obviously you have botched the job
Great job on the 4L60e I like the fact you share your tricks of the trade with us that just shows the years of experience you have Thanks again; Robert V.
glad you are here. I stepped off in deep. I installed a 4l60e from a 99 yukon in my 98 silverado. it has 80000 miles. my truck has 200000, the tranny was fine when my daughter burned up the engine. I had trouble getting it mated up. got the replacement engine running good. It won't go into gear. was getting p7040 and p7085. I changed all the solenoids and harness, put the ones from the older unit is. It still does nothing. I had the tc bolted to the flywheel when I installed it.
This is fascinating to watch!! You attack it like a doctor doing a surgery. I love watching a master at work! I have no idea how to put it together, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Great job!!!
Rhythm and repetition. Every part.... every time. This guy knows exactly what he's doing.
I wish someone with your level of technical proficiency did classes. I just went from a bad 2-3 flare shift to no 3/4 with my 94 4l60e. I have called different shops around town but they all seem to just throw rebuild kits in and call it a day. I'd like to do some upgrades and learn as much as I can with the supervision of an expert.
Last shop was convinced I have a 700r4 despite me explaining otherwise. 94 T15 Jimmy.
Damn dude you have done that a few times huh? I have done a few but you're definitely a pro! Great job and tutorial!
Thank you! I dont think you could find a better video on this transmission. ive watched a transmisson guy take this trans apart countless times and i learned more from your video than watching him do it. bless you
@ 13:00, "Excuse me boss... you have a text message." - LMAO! I literally almost fell outta my chair laughing. But seriously... this is a great video! One can easily tell this isn't your first rodeo here, just based on your commentary about what is going on and what to be careful of, etc. Experience sure is invaluable when teaching others. Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to watching the repair/rebuild video of this transmission. Putting a tranny all back together is undoubtedly a much larger chore than the disassembly of it. It's really no wonder why it costs so damned much to rebuild a tranny. Lots of labor time and you really gotta know your shit so that it all works correctly when you are done!
Always relaxing watching a veteran work his magic.
I REALLY LIKE HOW YOU EXPLAIN EVERYTHING . I ALMOST TRIED TO REBUILD MINE LAST YEAR,AND I WASN'T SURE I COULD DO IT,BUT WITH YOUR VIDEO I FEEL CONFIDENT THAT I CAN
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hiram, You're a genius! I'm serious - I could never do all that you do and I'm sure glad that we have men like you to keep those things going that we all need and use every day. God bless.
Thank you very much for the video. Watching your video and reading a lot of posts online made me (an automotive painter) confident enough to remove, rebuild (replaced sun gear shell with Smartshell, TransGo Shift kits, TCC update) and install by myself. I appreciate how you emphasized many important aspects - they are important. My advice: do not go crazy upgrading your stuff, pay someone to do your teflon seals but in any case TAKE YOUR TIME. It is doable - I have a 2002 Escalade to prove it:)
I got a sinus headache watching this, but it is incredibly fascinating to watch this.
This is way beyond my abilities, but I watched the entire video because It was so interesting. You obviously know this inside out (literally). Your customers are lucky to have you work on their vehicles.
I do everything myself and know how to rebuild transmissions, but WOW, this guy knows his stuff. THIS is why I buy trans already done by reputable shops!
Great teardown video on the 4l60E.I have a 98 Chevy 1500 with the same Trans w v6 motor. I broke it. took off from stop, shifted fine 1, 2, 3. when it went into OD/4th felt like I tore the trans out of the truck. nothing coming out the back; coasted to stop, looked to see if the Drive shaft came out. still there. no forward no reverse. just hear the torque turning. Felt like the whole truck came apart. No grinding noise, just no motion either way. Thank You for your time
Thanks Hiram, you are a Professional teardown operator, using simple tools, very well explained. I am in Australia and has been a great help to me.
This clear, well-organized work was and will remain beneficial to future generations, so thanks
Hiram,
Thank you so much for taking the time to put these videos together. I have taken a few automotive classes in high school but that was almost 7 years ago. This is a great tool to use for those DIY'ers who need a refresh course or who never tore a transmission apart. What I liked most about your videos is how you go further into explaining what to look out for, for future head aches and I can't wait to tear my transmission apart this week.
Thanks again,
Nicholas Garcia
Thanks for the knowledge drtranny, my 4l60e started ticking then went boom, been sitting since summer, pulled it today and after seeing it vid, not wanting to open it up to see what it was, just going to roll the dice at the junk yard and hope he sells me a good one, hats off to you for what you know and can do.
Its awesome to see all that's involved! I think I'll take mine to the shop!
Sir, you are a true professional!.........just keep track of all those parts is insane. Thank you for the video.
Great stuff . I really like the DIY tool ideas you show, for the guys wanting to do one without all the specialty tools .
THANKS HIRAM! I rebuilt my first trans with the help of your videos. I really appreciate it man thanks a lot for donating your time and knowledge.
I did this once my self, took me 4 months, ran for 3 years until something broke....its really just one thing after another w 4l60e....good learning experience though!
best presentation,or how to video i have seen so far he knows his stuff
This guy is clearly a pro. Other than that text part lol he's incredibly quick. Great video
A big thanks again. Rebuild is complete thanks in most part to you and your videos, with a little help from the Haynes Repair Manual, the GM Techtran Manual, some trial/error, a just a bit of patience! Waiting on a solenoid valve and then it's install.
Wow, flash back! I popped my cherry on this unit in 1999, Milford Proving Grounds Milford Michigan. I'm more into the engineering side of things now but have worked on many transmissions over the years. Currently working with CVT's and 9/10 speeds but the 4L60E still holds a special place in my heart lol, it was so simple. We have almost 500 parts in our 9 speed WTF 🤣
WOW. You are efficient at disassemling transmissions. Looks way too complicated for me. Lol.
J
From watching you disassemble that transmission, I'd have to say you've done it a time or two. Man they are complicated aren't they? I had no idea. I'm going to watch the assembly video right now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Dam I wouldn't be able to put that back together in a million years.
Take it apart? Fuck me.
Sir you need to be doing this and making money, not giving your knowledge away for free. You are definitely a master at your craft and I appreciate all the education though !
Keep vids coming!
Thank You Sir
i was a pharmacist. but i dont like my job. i decided to work what i like . i learned how to repeare, rebuild automatic transmission. i like that.
Excellent Video and Tutorial. I wrench on anything that has a motor as a hobby and figure that short of building a space ship I should be able to tackle anything with the right tools and a comprehensive guide such as the one you provide in your video. Thanks for the insight as well as the professionalism ( I noticed the apology to the viewers and thus silencing your cell phone.) Hiram you are "Top Notch"
Awesome work I can`t believe how many parts are inside that transmission this kinda work is for the pros this would be a big change for me. I don`t have location to perform a job like that But Thank you for this video it gave me a better in site of whats involved.
I'm speechless to express my feelings towards this video.... all I can say its very very very good kept my attention throughout the video.....
thank you very much...
Well you just reminded me on why I would never attempt to repair a transmission. You have some skills for sure.
great video..watching it helped find an no reverese issue i had after installing a new valve body..at 14:40 you went into the length of the bolts, i hope no seriuos damage was done ...thanks for the great education...
Great video Hiram! Really nice to watch a professional work! Thank you!
Man should have a Dr. in front of his name. Unbelievable video.
great teardown and inspection!! great illustration on parts wear felt like I was I class!! II will tune in for more of DR. Tranny
This was the most helpful bit of info that I found about this transmission
Damn whoever designed a transmission is a genius
Sticks and clutches ain't bad either.
You've helped me more than you'll ever know.Very good videos man,I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Much respect for a talented tradesman
Thanks for the video! now I have absolutely no doubts that I am never going to fool with doing it myself!
Thanks, Im on a spree of just learning on transmissions.
Just wanna say that whoever come up with an automatic transmission was a freaking genius! My Lord, I never thought there was that much junk inside of one. I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado with some 90,000 miles on her and they are not all pretty miles so to save a buck I was looking at buying my buddies tranny out of his donor truck to "build up" for my truck during downtime at work....I will need this video for sure! Thanks Hiram! Play and Pause is for sure in my future!!
yes about that sun gear shell. Mine was cracked but not yet broken free. I got an improved heavy duty version. I also upgrade the pump and one other valve part. Also had an open coil on one of the solenoids. And the input shaft bushings I replaced. This is on my 1994 Road-master Wagon.
Thank you for showing this Hiram, this is really helpful. I'm not afraid to take one of these apart, in fact I look forward to doing it.
Very good detailed and informative video. Just took my 2004 GMC Yukon Denali XL in today for a rebuild at AAA Transmission.
Thank You for the video, you showed me that You need to be the one to rebuild my transmission.
Same here man, Excellent video, followed through with everything, after a lot research on transmission, im normally a engine guy only, but I am working moving to see how transmission work, I have a 4L60E in my firebird and trans am and have the factory service manual and everything you showed it has in it. So thanks so much for the video. I can tell you have done many of these, they with all the secret tricks and quickness you were doing ! lol take care buddy !
This guy is just a master at his craft. love watching these video's you do Hiram. I subscribed to ur channel because of the amount of gearboxes you have shown and I've learned far more from watching and following ur videos then even when I had Trans class years ago.
Regulations significant for men,Many people can do for themselves and save money, It is difficult but possible. I liked the video Well done
You are so competent you make it look easy.
Some years ago I did a Subaru and a Dodge transmission and it's really not bad it looks on this video. Unlike Hirma, we kept the cluster pieces together and not put away or aside like Hiram is doing. You have to treat the a module piece and keep somewhat together. Use your smart phone and take photos you remove the pieces.
Hiram Great Video and very well explained. Your modified tools worked great. You need to do a rebuild video now.
I love your videos man. You are the master. Now I need to go and get me some more t50 bits. Broke one using my impact wrench yesterday.
Make sure you get T50 plus bits!
Nice video. Trying to teach the team how to create informative videos such as this. It was abit long but very detailed... Not many transmission specialists like being on video.
I can tell that this is a first time for you...LOL...Dang man you are a machine and a darn book of knowledge!. I don't know how to butter bread as well as you know this transmission...very impressive.
Love your videos. I hope to pick up an e4od to overhaul myself and beef it up for my 7.3. It would be my first trans attempt I have the atsg book .
Sir!
Great video, you obviously know your stuff;
and are also good at communicating what you are doing - a great combination.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in such a no nonsense way.
Damon
i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this man has done a tear down once or twice before this video ... lol
Another excellent dis-assembly video. Keep them coming..
Incredible wealth of knowledge here
Love all your videos. They are a big help. Thank You!!!
very knowledgable man...well,done sir and much thanx
Gracias Hiram, feliz año. Voy a disfrutar mirando todos tus videos!
My 4L60 has no issues but I watched this whole video haha
I wanna learn to rebuild the 4l60e but damn that's a lot of parts!!
Great job... quick and efficient. As for the video, I recommend you wear a lapel mic to help keep your voice more consistent in the video.
Thank You im going to rebuils the 4L60E in my Yukon I bought a beast sun shell , trans go shift kit, HP booster valve, pinless servos, and Alto clutches rebuild kit from alto. ive built racing TH 350 and powerglides all the time so I was a little worried about the 4L60E it looks simple. I guess well see Thank You Hiram.
Hi Hiram, I just wanted to update you on the symptom I had of no forward gears only reverse. You mentioned it could be the input sprag. Well I've tore it down with the help of your video and found the rear planetary gear bearing exploded causing the planetary gear to lock up and it snapped the the splines right off the output shaft. Similar to what happens the sun shell when it snaps. I've also rebuilt a core 4l60e with the help of your videos. Thanks a lot for all that you do. I will be waiting for a 5r110 video
Wow amazing video explain very nicely the best teardown video I've ever seen thank you
And this is why I’ll buy a rebuilt unit with a good warranty and install it myself. Shits complicated and if I did all the work myself like this dude and bolted it on my truck and it didn’t work I’d drive the vehicle off the cliff down by town.
I wouldn’t remember where to put everything back 😂😂
Record yourself then reverse the video
So basically a puzzle on expert mode lol good video!
you have skills, Hiram. Great video.
HAHAHH OMG!! " looks like converter clutch"!! the only man in the world that can tell what converter clutch fibers look like
you have very interesting and knowledgeable videos......
Thanks for taking the time to do this video it's the best thanks for share your thanks for sharing your knowledge
Great vid Hiram . You sure make it look easy . LOL Looking for the vids to put her back together . Keep up the good work .
thank you for all videos.you helped me a lot with you videos. i am galeb yassin from israel.
It would take me years to remember the names of all the parts and what they do and where they go, you appear to be a real professional (a mechanical surgeon).
this guy flies through this tear down geez!
