Also, the Chris Craft Stinger was the original MV boat. I used to work on several boats at the old Merrill Steven's in Coconut Grove. They used Brickel Shipyards for filming many scenes, up the Miami River.
+Cameron Little Thank You. Tom Jewsberry rebuilt this boat. I had the honor of owning it for a few years and driving it was nothing but a joy! The old Scarabs cut the water like no other and it was best in 2-5'' waves. 55mph was cruise and you could balance a nickel on you nose in 4' waves.
When I lived in Bradenton I worked at Wellcraft in plant 3 back in the day too and built cabins and cockpits on the 38 KV including the ones used on the show. so we must have worked together
I see this was posted a long time ago, so you probably won't see this. I'm glad it's still up. I can't tell you how much I miss this boat. I worked on Vice. Do you know who owns it now? I'm glad it's still out there. I'm a disabled Veteran now, but I want to get back on the water so bad. You guys are lucky. I saw the comment about Lake Erie. At least you're flying over 70 with the wind in your hair and the water splashing on your face.
My God, Didn't know that boat was up here.I Live in Westlake and up on the islands alot and never saw this piece of history on the water.I love Vice and all the cars and boats of that era. When will it be out on the lake next year ?I would love to see it ! ABSOLUTY GORGOUS! they dont make them like that anymore.
She's look'n good Jim. Mine will be back in the water next summer. May want to talk to your painter about returning it back to the original Vice colors.
Jim, going to be up at the islands this Memorial Day weekend.I was wondering if the boat was going to be in the water. It would be sweet to see it in person.Let me know and it would be great to meet you and see the boat. Thanks!
If you can't join 'em ,watch 'em! Thanks so much for posting this! I am using my Mom's account ,... last time I went out on the lake I rented a Float boat 25 hp,....had a good time though! Thanks 4 Posting! Later!
What a boat....who owns this one? This is a different one from the Martino one, right? Out where the buses don't run....hands down best episode ever...
Is this boat that was on display at the marina at Indian Rocks Beach, FL sometime in the 80's? It was on a trailer and the engines had been removed. There was a brass plate in the cockpit stating something to the effect "This boat was made especially for Don Johnson by Wellcraft". I still have a picture of me in the cockpit.
+Axele Molloy I have a page that tracks the series boats and Special Edition boats. There were six boats used in the series, three loaners for Don and 33 SE boats. Have you and I spoke about the Sweden boat recently or are you a different marina owner?
+Axele Molloy Six for the show over three years. 100 +/- Miami Vice Editions. The stripe on the side is unique to the show boats in that the lower white stripe descends to the chine midship whereas all others go to the transom just above the chine. One boat in the UK may have TV history (Denmark), however, one for sure does not. This I know as a fact.
Jim you still have that thing ? I can remember when you first got it and had it down at Harbor Park Marina sitting on the trailer it was the talk of the park
It might have been used in the show not the 84 shows for sure it was not built yet, looks like they filmed it out of Black Point Marina in Cutler Ridge (Bay) S.Dade Miami FL
Question: Was the Scarab used on the show the only boat with that paint scheme? I.E., it was a custom paint scheme drawn up just for the series. Or rather, did Wellcraft offer it as a factory scheme for anyone who ordered it?
Wellcraft offered Universal a "New boat painted any way they wanted it. This is the result. Now know as star 1 as it was the first. another 86 was supplied then two 87s. All of the Show boats (4) have the lower white side strip angle down to the chine mid ship. About 100 "Miami Vice" replicas were made and sold to the public. All of which has the lower white strip continue back to the transom. Their are some cameos of odd "vice edition" boats in different shows as well.
Thank you, KNUCLESTICK. I've noticed the difference in location of the lower white stripe on various Vice boats over the years. The Monogram model kit, which I enjoyed as a kid, was supplied with side decals replicating the narrow 3-color stripe, with the lower white strip reaching nearly back to the stern. I once did spot (in about 1993), and green 1986-looking Vice Scarab in the harbor while standing on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. It was the 38 footer for sure; not the mini-version. If I recall correctly, this boat had the wider 3-color stripe as on your boat, with the lower white stripe ending amidships. I also remember a third white stripe, angled across the center 3-color stripe; I believe in the green area. It connected the upper and lower white stripes. I'm not sure why that extra white stripe was painted. Thank you for sharing your info! Your boat is the boat of my dreams!
Second boat. FIRST SCARAB. first boat was a Chris Craft Stinger 390 of about the same size. The actual TV scarabs of which their are arguable four, 2 1986, and 2 1987 (87s had lights on arch) along with others with cameos. The four all had the lower white stripe on the sides dip to the chine midship while the Replicas (about 100) all had the lower white stripe continue back and through the transom. Tom Jewsbury restored this boat to supreme standards. The interior was beautiful as well with two opposing couches and a bed up front. It has a TV, microwave, refrigerator and potty as well. Loud ,thirsty, fast and smooth says KV38
I liked the original cigarette boat used in the first season and this boat is not it. The stripping is completely different. This Scarab is a lot shorter than the cigarette boat. Why did they change boats anyway?
@CRASH ALEXANDER Thank you for that abundant amount of information and for correct my errors. Obviously I am not an officianado on the water craft that power through the sea. And I’ve spent less time on a boat than anything else. Yet I am fascinated by them. Thanks again.
So beautiful a boat, probably the Worlds top 3, --- but such a bad camera/video editing?? You should really invest in a full HD camera and document this beauty.
I can tell by the comments her that I am among friends,....What was the deal with naming Sonny's sailboat The St. Vitus 's Dance?!? What a terrible name...any inside info?....
@joshua6200 This boat is indeed the original camera platform boat from seasons 2 and 3. I had some involvement with the restoration of this boat and I know for a fact that this boat has been documented by Wellcraft aside from other verifications. The deck hatches (windows) are the proper Bomar hatches as on all KVs. The arch (wing) is in the proper location....right where Wellcraft installed it when this boat was built. btw...a real fan of the show would know a Stinger from a Scarab KV
I hope you either sold that boat or kept it and moved to Miami. It does not belong in Ohio. If you own it still and want to sell it know a huge mv fan who will pay 100k for it no problem.
I love the sound of V8's near idle. Absolutely gorgeous boat, lucky dude!
I was a big Miami Vice fan, just loved seeing these sleek boats in the show.
I miss watching it. Never ever got a Grammie. I used to race home from school, never ever missed a tv show.
Gorgeous boat. I yearn for the late 70's to late 80's again. Back then cool people could own cool stuff. Now, it's mostly d-bags.
So you mean like it was more affordable to have a boat and other things now thought of as luxury goods?
Go out and make your own way and you can afford what you want. You must be one of these guys who think rich people are evil. Typical Lib.

The Stinger was the one they raced in the episode The Great McCarty…Born to be wild, great song choice for it!!
You don't realize how it made me happy to watch that vid
I said the heat on.
Super coole tolle Musik! Man bekommt sogar Gänsehaut davon! Selbst die Filme, gehen ans Herz! Man kann sich da richtig reinversetzen!
Can't get enough ! Awesome boat, nice footage!
Thanks for posting this, I have a passion for the Miami Vice boats!
the sound of those engines !!!!
OUTSTANDING video. This is my all time favorite tv show. The intro song you used from the series was an awesome touch.

LONG LIVE THE 38KV SCARAB!
Gotta love the 80's !!!
Hay short stop you won’t turn that down a few decibels . As don Johnson said in Miami vice
What a great old hull...she looks smooth and rock solid.
I remember having worked on that boat when I worked at Wellcraft. There were several Scarabs built for this show as well as for Thunder in Paradise

Thank your for sharing, that is a classic performance boat. Best of luck with it and safe boating.

Thanx for a great video, you can see why the series was such a success, Strange you see almost no TV usage of muscle boats anymore, I don't get it.
Perfect selection of music.
I still want one, after almost 40 years. Old boats are cool, but a huge PIA.

This exact boat, a Hughes MD500 turbine heli and a D9 Caterpillar dozer are on my short list of acquisitions.
