    There is one issue with Incremental Refresh - I hope it will be solved soon. Whenever I want to upload the dataset to cloud (PBI Service), I am replacing it with just dataset without incremental refresh done, I need to wait another 30-40 minutes for full refresh. In large scale deplyment it's not acceptable, we need to do our updates on weekends. Actually easy fix would be to replace dataset after IR has been done (a choice option) and the replacing existing dataset. Otherwise if something goes wrong with IR then we are stuck with last two months instead of last 3 years.
    Another thing is... I've waited so long for Hierarchy Slicer to see that it not supports Parent-Child Hierarchies :(, it is also breaking when having a lot of values in Cloud. I know it's preview feature, but not having support for Parent-Child Hierarchies is just pointless. Now it's just simple merging different slicers into one.

      Hello Artur, This issue with Incremental Refresh is coming from today's SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services) Tabular partition processing options and TSML (Tabular Model Scripting Language) partition handling functions. I don't believe it will be "fixed" soon since it needs significant improvements in SSAS Tabular partitioning. When previously I had to manually implement IR in SSAS Tabular, I could offer something similar to the current solution in Power BI, but I should have written hundreds of lines of codes, now it automatically works in Power BI Service :) I hope I could highlight a bit why it is not a small work today, maybe later... Ferenc

      @@ferenccsonka6232 That explains a lot :). Thank you big time. I wish it could be that simple as having virtual copy of dataset in the cloud which could be switched with old dataset after IR has finished. But this can be managed by careful updates of report/dataset. However Hierarchy Slicer broke my heart. I have one last idea on how to create parent-child hierarchy in this slicer, I will see tomorrow - Update: No - IsFiltered is always showing max browse level in the Hierarchy Slicer - so we cannot use the trick used in Matrix Visual

    Hi Ruth, The literature on IR is very poor. This is an old video but I thought worth mentioning. IR works on flat files granted that the files are saved periodically. I have data that shows a hotel room pickup that is saved daily to a folder . I set an IR on last six months daily pickups so that it will only referesh overnight's data only as there is no reason to load old data. I wish I knew this.

    I guess this could only be applied to a model in which all queries must have a datetime column.
    If this is not the case, then any suggestion why the following problem?
    So i tried applying this and get following 2 errors:
    1.
    This error is observed on 2 queries, both of which only contain text columns and no datetime columns. These contain mapping/dimension columns that I use to slice/dice the report on.
    2.
    this is appearing on the main query, probably because of first two.

    Hi there,
    many thanks for the great explanation. I do have a question concerning query folding at the source. As suggested by Microsoft, Dataflows and Datassets are designed to work in tandem. Do you have any further information about whether 'folding at the source' is applicable when configuring incremental refresh on a Dataset that is connected by Data Import to a Dataflow on the server? When considering query folding at the source, where would the source be in this example, would it be the Dataflow or rather the source the Dataflow connects to?

  • @bradj229
    @bradj229 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool feature, but if a full refresh is required AFTER you publish the report and there's a potential for hundreds of millions of rows, if not billions, seems like you could run into issues with requiring hours of query runtime to initially import that data in the service where there's less monitoring of which partition possibly failed or didn't. Seems like a better option is to do initial refresh locally to monitor the initial full imported, then turn on the incremental refresh feature, then publish and have it run incremental from then on within the service (without needing another full refresh by default). The downside to this is, you could be publishing a large pbix file (5gb+, etc.), but at least if it failed it was all or nothing and you could try to upload again. Have you ran into this issue?

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For bigger datasets you should use premium and the real incremental refresh, this is just a fix.

    It would be cool if you could make it only refresh records modified from today/this week/month. If you are reporting on an ongoing financial year, then records that were updated 1 month ago will never be updated again and won't need refreshing. Since the RangeStart is static, it will continue to refresh old data unless you go in and change the RangeStart date.

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can make the rangestart dynamic, cant you?

    It seems like this does not work on updated records. I'm using "last_updt_dt" as my field to filter on, and on the incremental reresh it tries to add any records with an update date > than 2 days ago (thats hoow I set it up). I modified a 2 year old record so that its last update date is new. The incremental reresh adds a records for this to the data set, but does not delete the existing record in the data set. So now the data set has two records, one with the old date, and one with the new. This seems to jive with this snippet from MS..
    "The filter on the date column is used to dynamically partition the data into ranges in the Power BI service. Incremental refresh isn't designed to support cases where the filtered date column is updated in the source system. An update is interpreted as an insertion and a deletion, not an actual update. If the deletion occurs in the historical range and not the incremental range, it won't get picked up. This can cause data refresh failures due to partition-key conflicts."

    Hi,
    I am facing an issue, I've applied incremental refresh on my report as you've shown but in my report for example , the total number of records are 10,000 and after publishing the report on service, it is all good then I go to the SSMS and in the database I update 20 records and when I come to the PBI service and refresh my dataset and then when I check the count of records it shows "10020" !
    So my question is that why the records are getting added instead of getting updated?
    I only want 10000 records and it should include those updated records and want to replace the old records in the service. Can you please tell how can I get that? I have tried every thing you showed in video and also detect data changes didn't work.

    I have a fact table with start_year (2020) and end_year(2023) parameters in it to limit the number of years worth of data. On top of this I have incremental refresh of last 13 months. I publish this file to web service and change the start_year parameter say from 2020 to 2019. Why does the parameter changes in web service doesn't take into effect? If I change from 2020 to 2021, it does make necessary changes but for the first time only after publishing the file. Any thought on this? My report should only hold only last 5 years of data with last 13 months of incremental refresh.

    Hi Ruth, thanks for the video, it is AWESOME!
    Re-posting a question I asked on another of your videos. Please let me know your opinion.
    Master table has values till yesterday (sales and region). I want to append Master table with today's values. I want to perform this automatically for every day. Since I am using SAP BW, Incremental refresh doesnt work (Query folding not available).
    I have tried to extract latest date from master table in a query (in my example, it is yesterday). Used the latest date query to fetch today's data (as start date). However while appending both tables, it throws cyclic error (rightfully so).
    I would really appreciate your guidance.

    I tried to setup IR this morning on my dataset and when i upload it to PBI Service and it tries to do its refresh I get "The database operation was cancelled because of an earlier failure.". Change it back to full refresh and it works again. Couldnt find an answer on the forums for it

      I got the operation was cancelled due an internal refresh...
      Will check tomorrow again, let me know if yours start working.

    What if I have a dateID column in the table in format 20200220?

      While the data type of the parameters must be date/time, it's possible to convert them to match the requirements of the datasource. For example, the following Power Query function converts a date/time value to resemble an integer surrogate key of the form yyyymmdd, which is common for data warehouses. The function can be called by the filter step.
      (x as datetime) => Date.Year(x)*10000 + Date.Month(x)*100 + Date.Day(x)

    i know is a bit off topic, another good thing in this update is hierarchical slicers, that after some work i managed to sync across pages, but then when you publish to the service it does not work!!. Jokes.
