"One Yard Short," one of the greatest Super Bowl finishes ever, needs a deep rewind

- It’s January 30th, the year 2000. We’re at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for Super Bowl 34 where the Tennessee Titans and St Louis Rams have just 6 seconds separating them from history. With the ball at the ten, down 7, and no timeouts remaining, the Titans have one last chance to stay alive. Otherwise, this Rams team that came from nowhere will be going home champions.
No matter what happens, one of these franchises will win their first Super Bowl tonight. And once that’s the case - everything that led us to this moment will be overshadowed. But in order to fully appreciate what’s to come, let’s rewind.

@@jacklee4731 Last year will never compare to the 1999-2000 season. no team in the nfl could defeat us but the titans. we were 14-2 both losses to the titans, and then lost to them a 3rd time in the afc championship. Then the titans coach at the time called Jacksonville his second "home". I hate him to this day for saying that

I understand how you feel, though: my Bears have gone 15-40 against the Packers since Favre stepped in for Don Majkowksi in 1992, including a NFC championship loss at home

Jax native and Jags fan here. I remember that season well. 14-2 with 2 losses to the Titans. And who do we get in the playoffs? Freaking Tennessee. LOL. 14-3....
Some things that were left out that I feel like should've been in the video:
The Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round just beat Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins 62-7, making it seem impossible to beat them.
The Titans then went into Jacksonville and spanked them, giving them their only 3 losses of the season, the only team to ever give a team their only 3 losses.
Even though the Rams had Torry Holt, Az Hakim, Isaac Bruce and Marshall Faulk, it was Ricky Prohl that was the hero in the NFC championship game, catching the game winning pass to go up 11-6.
It was one of the only times in NFL history the Super Bowl was only a week, not two weeks, after the AFC/NFC Championship games. One of the only other times it happened was 2 years later due to 9/11, where the Rams also played in that one.
There's a pretty strong argument that the Titans had the Jags plays all year.

Actually, out of 53 (including this year's super bowl) only 7 have ever been a week after.
This was the first football game I ever watched. My mom had just passed away that September so me and my dad watched it. I was 9 years old. Such a good game. I fell in love with the game after that. Lol RIP dad I miss you to.
One of the greatest games ever played hands down. But I feel awful for Bruce Matthews, he played I think 20 years in the NFL, as a CENTER and never won the superbowl.

He didnt just play center lol, he played more games at guard but also played both tackle positions for an extended period. The dude did it all on the O-line.

In the movie castaway with Tom Hanks, when he returns to Memphis to find his wife remarried and with a new life, she tells him that Memphis has gotten a football team since he’s been gone, the titans, she told him that they they even went to a super bowl and we’re short by one yard from winning...
If you went to see that movie in St. Louis, which I did twice because I went with a friend who really wanted to see it but didn't want to go alone, the entire theater cheered after she said that line, haha.

Kevin Dyson was my high school weights instructor and an assistant coach while working on his Masters. Nobody dared asking him about the super bowl but he came off very humble and often talked more about loving playing basketball in college and his shoe collection lol. He's now a Vice Principal and a chill dude to look up to from what I heard.

That Steve McNair scramble to set up the final play belongs with Jermaine Kearse’s SB XLIX catch as two of the greatest forgotten plays in NFL history. Steve deserved a ring, RIP.

As a Buccaneers fan going to have to disagree with you trashing the refs for the incomplete pass rule against the bucs in NFC title game. NFL rules at the time stated that if the ball hit the ground the pass had to be declared incomplete. This game got the rule changed next season so that if a receiver retained possession of a ball that bit the ground it was a catch. The old rule was dumb, but the refs made the right decision based of the rulebook at the time.
Fact we won a super bowl not too long after makes it okay regardless

In STL mike “the tackle” jones is god and we all grew up loving kurt Warner. It was a great time before the rams left but this is a great memory for the city of St.louis

@@luisnavarro5298 ,That's true. This past year was a great year for The Rams in LA. I was rooting hard for them to win it all. I've always had a soft spot for Matthew Stafford for quietly putting up year after year with the Lions bungling mismanagement. I always felt he was the real deal, and Cooper Kupp was phenomenal this year as a go-to guy, and proved it in the Superbowl.
It was a fantastic show we saw this year. One of my all-time top 5 to watch (where my team wasn't in it). I'm happy for the Rams this year.

The only three loses of the year. Those early Jags teams were legendary man. I love Mark Brunell. The rarest of QB breeds. The GOOD left handed quarterback.

It's weird, I dont know why soccer has unparalleled popularity across so much of the world, and for some reason, one of the biggest and most athletically competitive nations the US, soccer never took the same hold across the population. i remember this one. we had tivo then so our broadcast was a few seconds behind the other apartments in our complex.
that issac bruce touchdown, and the tackle in the fourth quarter sent cheers cascading through our apartment complex like dominos. those watching the live broadcast first then those with various second delays from their tivos. greatest show on turf!!!!

9:42 one of the greatest scrambles of all time! RIP to Steve McNair, one of my favorite QB's when I was a kid. I was 5 at the time and this was the first super Bowl I remember seeing. Our power was out because of a storm, so my dad determined not to miss the game got us a motel room to watch it. I remember seeing that final play on a little 15 inch screen in some cruddy motel room.

This was the most dramatic ending to a Super Bowl to date. And it helped usher in a new era of good Super Bowl games. Showing that SBXXXII wasn’t a fluke.
It was like a football movie, it started out slow and got real exciting at the end with a guy coming up just short. Great game and I was hoping they would score just to see the first superbowl go into OT.

As a Los Angeles native and a Rams fan from a family full of Rams fans this moment was euphoric...I wasn’t alive when they lost to the Steelers but to the men in my family this was what thy waited for their whole lives...it wasn’t until the next day they came to the sad realization that though there team had won there would be no parade in Los Angeles...I’m glad the Rams are back where they belong!

Aside from a few Cardinals World Series wins, this was only the second time the state of Missouri had a championship in anything. The football Gods had given their middle finger to the entire state for years. The feeling of euphoria around the entire state was amazing. The story of both teams leading up to the Super Bowl is worthy of a Netflix mini series. Good job on this video guys.

the greatest show on turf lived up to their name...bruces instant title after that tie was something only the 99 rams could pull off..momentum luck had nothing on their talent...it was so expected fast and easy it almost cost them cause they scored to quickly
This game, Gordon Hayward's almost half court game winner vs. Duke, Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals, Super Bowl 49, the 2016 NCAA championship between North Carolina and Villanova, Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, and Game 7 of the 2016 World Series to me are some of the most dramatic endings in sports history; every second mattered and both teams in each situation gave all they had and that's what makes sports so incredible is that it puts you on the edge of your seat and makes your heart race.

The most underrated Super Bowl of all-time. Had the Titans been either the Steelers or Jets while the Rams are the Packers or 49ers, this would have been spoken among the all-time best games in SPORTS History. Not just NFL or football, but SPORTS history.

Ok SB Nation, Titans fan here. You all failed to mention the fact that both Tennessee safeties were out during the crucial moments of this game. Marcus Robertson broke his leg in the AFC title game, and then Blaine Bishop sustained a neck injury in the third quarter of the super bowl. That left 2nd year player Perry Phoenix as a second string starter for the Super Bowl, and backup Anthony Dorsett as Bishop’s replacement in the secondary late in the game. Right after that Warner was able to carve up the defense. Had those freak injuries not happened, who knows if the Rams would’ve gotten that wide open for the late touchdown.
