Step one.. : look up your council tax band

Screen shot and make notes
Step 2 : Search confirmed genuine sold prices

Look up evidence to support your claim
You need 5 houses, using genuine sold prices , not right move for sale “asking prices”
“If you think your band is wrong
You’ll need to provide addresses for up to 5 similar properties in a lower band than yours.
The properties should be the same as your property in terms of:
* type - for example, if you live in a semi-detached house the properties should be semi-detached houses
* size - for example, number of bedrooms and total area
* age
* style and design
The properties should also be either:
* in the same street or estate - if you live in a town or city
* in the same village - if you live in the countryside”
Then if you have some evidence
Step 3: Challenge your council tax banned

Important “The VOA will not consider average house price information from websites such as Nationwide House Price Index, Nethouseprices, Rightmove or Zoopla as strong evidence”
Submit your challenge, with your evidence and ask for it to be backdated… I believe it’s 6 years and also applies to the other owners over the 6 years. And would count from the date you submit your evidence
Don’t expect this to be done instantly ! It might take 6 months or longer.
I got a band F bungalow reduced to band E. The previous owner got 5 years refund of the difference. I got lower council tax for the next 18 years! (The correct fairer amount)

But you could also end up paying more and get a bigger band if you’re not careful they may find out you should’ve been in a high band than what you were

Theoretically yes , but you wouldn’t even submit the paperwork if you couldn’t supply the evidence of similar houses on a lower band..
We were so obviously in a 3 bed bungalow paying band F , paying more than 4 bed houses paying band D&E
