Metal Gear is Yakuza before Yakuza. A main story where all the characters play it straight, but its actually insane and full of twists, and a lot of wacky, goofy stuff around it where it will absolutely not take itself even slightly seriously.
Fun Fact: Greyfox in the original PlayStation release is voiced by Greg Eagles who also voiced Grim from "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy". While in the Twin Snakes release for the Gamecube, Greyfox is voiced by Ron Paulson who also voiced Yakko Warner and Pinky in "Animaniacs", as well as Carl Wheezer from "Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius".
im sure everyone knows this but the colonels voice actor is also grandpa max from ben 10 and the vault tec rep in fallout 4. kinda funny, greg miller, how 2 voice actors from cartoon networks most iconic shows were in mgs together.
Since Glasses asked so nicely, I'm a big MGS3 fan. It had some neat mechanics, fun boss fights, and a really solid story. Also I'm someone who got stuck for a while with Meryl's Codec code because the copy of the game I had was bought from BlockBuster, and they did not include the back sheet of the CD liner. Believe it or not, the Internet was not as useful around 2003 when I played this game, so it took a little while to actually find it.
At 3:06:32 DuckStation actually creates a new memory card every time as by default it goes "Sperate Card Per Game (Title)". So even if you played the Konami Games that Psycho Mantis looks for, he wouldn't be reading them off due to this setting. And for interesting facts. The Master Collection allows you to create a dummy memory card with Konami titles of your choice. 3:20:30 "There was a PlayStation Mouse?" Yeah for titles like Myst, Quake, Final DOOM and Clock Tower for instance.
1:32:00 if I remember correctly, Meryl is one of the guards in that area walking. You can tell how feminine the guard walks. Also if she catches you she just runs away...and you can knock her out or tranquilize her for the lolz. Shooting her is an immediate game over.
17:45 And that's the moment DSP forgot for the entirety of all his MGS playthroughs. The game quite literally holds your hand so much that you can get free answers to what you need just by calling with the codec! Plus there's some amazing dialogue in all games. There's like 20 hours of codec calls in the first 3 games IRRC lol
this game is just 80s muscle tough guy movies (like die hard) and anti war slideshows mashed into a 10 hour experience and Im so hear for it. I love this wacky game
Gotta say i was happy to catch some of this yesterday, and glad that like no one backseated it was mainly just people either reminiscing about the game or passing ray tips about general game play
2:55 Fun fact, that theme was from a game Kojima made before getting famous for MG, and the game is Policenauts. Was never released outside of Japan, which is a shame since it's a good point and click game.
Six shots! Enough to kill anything that moves... But seriously, glad Ray appreciates how incredible this game was in the context of its time, and why so many consider it a major gaming milestone.
i assume meryl's code being on the cd case is actually just very old school piracy protection. the "what is the first word on page 3 of the manual" treatment. Also, I loved the socom games. i think i played 2 and 3 but i cant remember for sure.
98 was a good year for games, I was playing Gen 1 Pokemon and Sonic Adventure whilst Kojima was blowing minds with what he could get away with in this game. I hope we see MGS2 and maybe even beyond down the line after seeing how much fun you had on stream last night.
Ray I don’t think you understand just how much this vod caught me by surprise. You’re gonna love the game and hopefully you’ll play 2 and get your mind properly fucked
Watched the first section in this vid and decided to give MGS1 a try. Had a fucking blast going through blind but I didn't even know you could choke people out. I also went through the second Sniper Wolf fight before I found the SOCOM suppressor. Been introduced to a lot of great games by watching you play. Metal Gear, Yakuza, Resident Evil.
I'll confess before I started watching this, I went straight to the credits in part 2 to see if Ray liked the game or not. Thankfully he did, so I'm here watching it.
This is why I love blind / drunk runs, you never know what path and decisions the player will take. Having “backseat” alternate on / off for chat tho is a little rough. Maybe streamers should have a light up sign for “backseating” like the “on air” signs for radio? Also epic thumbnail!
1:36:16 I had to stop working to laugh and make this comment. VERY quick witted nicely done 2:09:01 i cant believe how much function the Thermal actually gives, when I was a kid once I got it i NEVER used it 3:25:30 the dog encounter part 1, 3:26:14 for part 2 3:34:24 comedy gold
I remember renting this from blockbuster as a kid - they did not include the codec for Meryl.... I had no internet it wasn't until several years later I got to play the full game
Having never played metal gear solid I thought people were memeing when they said Snake just repeats the last thing he heard in a slightly quizzical tone but holy shit he really does.
So 03:50:42 ish I played the Master Collection version of this and I did not notice Sniper Wolf's targetting laser??? Not sure if I just didn't see it or not but I had a pretty hard time figuring this out.
3:58:10 Probably nobody cares but I like infodumping haha. Reason why the textures on the OG PlayStation warp so much is basically because the PS1 isn't precise enough when calculating where the 3d models should be. That causes them to snap. Consoles/computers are way more precise nowadays, which solves this problem. If I had to guess, it still happens, but now the snapping is so tiny, you don't see it. There's also no texture filtering which causes the textures to warp. The actual explanation is more intricate/detailed than this, but this explains the gist of it haha
Oh boy. Early David Hayter Snake is WAY different from modern DH Snake. You can tell he's "forcing" the voice of Snake, especially after rescuing Kenneth Baker, since its sounds super raspy.
When i was little we diddnt have alot of money, but i did have a PS1 ! And i had a demo disc where this starting mission was on, i remember it like Yesterday, i have played this over a 100 times, but i never played the full game, Im looking forward to this playtrough…. Also i was so scared playing this as i diddnt like the Sound when getting caught
Back in '98 and prior US voice actors were uncertain how union rules applied to video games (often they were missing from the rules entirely). To avoid having any issues applying for future non-game voice work, they used pseudonyms. Presumably David was the sole person who told Konami he didn't care and to stick his real name in lmao
It took to long to jump into this content! This is the only Metal Gear game I played, only it was the GameCube version... Should have Ray play the very first part of that just for the underwear Easter egg 🤣
I REALLY REALLY hope he ends up playing Sekiro! I beat that game for the first time a couple months ago, and I adore that game. It’s challenging but SUPER rewarding
Love your streams Ray and this might have been the most fun one in a while. I'm admittedly biased so when one of my favs is getting played by my fav streamer I get all giddy. If you do the later games we'll make sure that sub goal for them gets hit! Also the Otacon name origin reveal might have been the hardest I've laughed in a while
While he is right about the Playstation original opening theme, I thought he meant for the actual game. If that's the case, my vote is for Nier, the original. Agh, beautiful.
Wasn't going to watch this VOD, just because I don't know the game or anything about these games. Glad I did - even just for the Stardew jokes at the beginning. Solid jokes and content.
The fucking thumbnail is legendary.
Definitely deserving of a poster
Came to say the same thing lol
@@toastedt140 id buy 2 of them instantly
Solid Ray
This is very kind. Thank you 💚
2:28:33
Ray's reaction to hearing what Otacon stands for is one of my favorite things in the entire vid.

Another 10/10 TH-cam thumbnail. Glorious.

the fact that the Master collection lets you spoof the Psycho Mantis save reading thing is very cool
Fucking banger thumbnail holy shit
Steel plate poster worthy!!!
"Hmm... Dead."
The dialogue is absolutely insane, I love it.
Kept us waiting, huh? You're pretty good...
Ray's thumbnail art is always so good. Shouts out to the artists!
Thank you! 💚
(Octacon) Ray? What's wrong? Can you hear me!? RAAAAAaaaaay!!!

This is my favorite thumbnail yet wonderful job as always Gael!
This stream was a hell of a lot of fun, and super happy the game itself has held up! Even if the dialogue is occasionally hilarious 😂
Incredible thumbnail art from Gael as always!! So excited for this playthrough! First part was a lot of fun, hell yeah.
Gotta say i was happy to catch some of this yesterday, and glad that like no one backseated it was mainly just people either reminiscing about the game or passing ray tips about general game play
Fun fact, Liquid Snake was voiced by the guy who voiced Leonardo in the OG Ninja Turtles cartoon
I didnt know Ray planned to play this! This is one of my favorite series of all time. Ive been waiting for this day.
So happy to see Part 1. I also played this on a totally legit playstation and had no issues with the goofy parts
Silly mistake, dude! Metal Gear RAY is in MGS2!
Been waiting for this one to come out since the stream! One of my all time favorite games
Guess you could say he ‘kept you waiting huh’?
Top tier thumbnail once again, Gael! Super badass!
4:02:50
Nagzz trying to get a "LLLLLLLLLLETS PLAAAAYYYYY!" out of Ray under order from Chibi xD
So happy Ray is playing MGS! Please play more of the series! I feel like he could really love this series, it get pretty goofy sometimes
The fact that Miller’s VA is also Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes is crazy.
Amazing thumbnail, would make a perfect t-shirt metal gear Raylmaoo
Fun fact, Alaska does not have a Hazardous Waste disposal program. It is all collected and transported out of state.
Been waiting for this video for years!
35:00 ray's first time seeing Tina
2:55 Fun fact, that theme was from a game Kojima made before getting famous for MG, and the game is Policenauts. Was never released outside of Japan, which is a shame since it's a good point and click game.

A little, it was more just kojima breaking the 4th wall. If i remember right you could just bug Campbell enough and he'll give it to you
Ray Deepthroat is a reference to the Watergate incident I believe.
I get flashes of metal gear awesome at certain points and that makes this just that much more fun to watch
Fun fact, even this game has fast travel, by equipping a specific box, and hiding in the trucks it will transport you to other areas around the base.
This is my favorite video game series. thanks for playing, Ray.
I never thought in my lifetime I would see ray play metal gear solid. This is definitely a treat!
OH THIS IS A GOOD THUMBNAIL
Gael doing it again with the thumbnail 10/10
1:36:20 Damn near snorted a piece of popcorn into my nasal passage, thanks Ray.
98 was a good year for games, I was playing Gen 1 Pokemon and Sonic Adventure whilst Kojima was blowing minds with what he could get away with in this game.

Another BANGER thumbnail!
Best. Thumbnail. Ever.
Ray I don’t think you understand just how much this vod caught me by surprise. You’re gonna love the game and hopefully you’ll play 2 and get your mind properly fucked
Great video, impeccable thumb!
The thumbnail is sick af

I was late for a game in high school because I was playing MGS3 for the first time and I misjudged how long a cutscene was going to last
David Hayter plays a lot of Snakes and Bosses, and not just in Metal Gear.
I remember renting this from blockbuster as a kid - they did not include the codec for Meryl.... I had no internet it wasn't until several years later I got to play the full game
Please let this be the start of Ray playing the entire series.

Watching him never shoot the cameras is giving me agita, lol. This is a blast from the past, none the less.
So 03:50:42 ish I played the Master Collection version of this and I did not notice Sniper Wolf's targetting laser??? Not sure if I just didn't see it or not but I had a pretty hard time figuring this out.

God I love metal gear dialogue. It’s always just shake repeated the last few words as a question.
Rays reaction to the Otacon name reveal was so fucking funny
The new releases master collection has been updated quite a bit and is a decent way to play the game now, but I respect using the OG version
This is great cant wait for more! love the thumbnail. Also if you really wanted to do the green tint bit you should that would be funny lol
Hi glasses! I played the hell out of Metal Gear 5 Phantom Pain back in college, was a ton of fun.
Also, for ray: “You’re pretty good.”
Holy shit that thumbnail!!

Oh Ray got to actually upload this movie stream
Never in my life did I think Ray would play any MGS, let alone the original
Not only do I remember SOCOM: US Navy SEALs, I played the online multiplayer!
Omg the comment "check your radar, she is back seating" I laughed so hard at that im not sure why but man good times 😂😂
I'm so sad that I rinsed through this and now have to wait for part 2 :(
“Who TF is decoy Octopus” 😂
1:17:37
Ray said "Hi my wife" at the perfect time like he was talking to the Colonel.
MGS1 on PS1. You have my attention. Good luck.
That thumbnail goes so hard what the hell
Hang on, were all the cast (except David Hayter) credited as like random celebrity names?

in 1998 I was playing that box where you put the shapes into the holes because I was 1
Took my contacts out and this game looks like it’s in 1080p all of a sudden
I REALLY REALLY hope he ends up playing Sekiro!
I beat that game for the first time a couple months ago, and I adore that game. It’s challenging but SUPER rewarding
Snake: does mild flirting
Chat: "WOW HES SO HORNY"
Psycho Mantis: Dropping his tragic past
Chat: "WOW HE'S AN INCEL"
🙃
Yesterday i finished watching someone do a MGS playthrough, now i get to watch THE 51 DIFFERENCE
I seen this pop up scrolled passed initially, did a double take and came back. Hell yeah
This game isnt the only thing thats solid right now
Its the gameplay, clearly
Anybody else watch the Ocelot fight with Yakety Sax in the background?
Man it’s a long shot but I hope Ray gives the rest of this series or at least til MGS3
Also, is the narrator Grandpa Max from Ben 10?
I love chibi, but cosplaying as her sounds awful, I'm sorry for your loss and am very excited to see it.
Holy crap that's Ben ten's grandpa as the voice of the colonel!
That was the funniest ocelot fight I’ve ever seen.
Love your streams Ray and this might have been the most fun one in a while. I'm admittedly biased so when one of my favs is getting played by my fav streamer I get all giddy. If you do the later games we'll make sure that sub goal for them gets hit!

I thought Ray said he wasn’t going back to Dreams? Also this my favourite TN to date.
Man i hope Ray enjoys this and plays Mgs 3 someday
Holy crap!! Please I hope he keeps playing the sequels!
