Katrina and the Waves: "Walking on Sunshine" The Cars: "Magic" Matthew Wilder: "Break My Stride" The Romantics: "Talking in Your Sleep" Murray Head: "One Night in Bangkok"
Either "I'm Still Standing" "Come on Eileen" "Let my Love Open the Door", "Alive and Kicking", "Out of Touch", "Word up"...There's so many to choose from!
Hard to pick just one, so I'm scrolling through my all-time favorite songs list & picking some of the catchiest ones: "Another One Bites The Dust"- Queen "Funkytown"- Lipps, Inc. "Upside Down"- Diana Ross "Queen Of Hearts"- Juice Newton "The Tide Is High"- Blondie "I Love Rock 'N Roll"- Joan Jett & The Blackhearts "Goody Two Shoes"- Adam Ant "The Longest Time"- Billy Joel "Faith"- George Michael "Your Mama Don't Dance"- Poison "Back To Life"- Soul II Soul
Sounds great! Wish I was there at that time. I was a metal head at the time, but now realize how many H&O songs had planted permanent ear worms in my brain! Even without ever buying any of their albums! Just what I heard on the radio and MTV!
I absolutely LOVE Hall and Oats. They have created so many great songs that stand the test of time. They both seem to be really nice and funny guys. I love watching "Live" from Daryl's house. Man, I wish he would make more of those. They are an amazing duo. But a very close runner is Loggins & Massina. They have done some amazing songs. They are both fantastic song writers, producers. Wonderful harmony. Both Duos still sound great when they reunite. I loved this episode. You brought back some great memories from my youth.
There is something special about DH & JO- their voices and the chemistry they had/have was nothing short of a "one of a kind" duo! The music of our lives!
“ She’s gone, 1 on 1, Sara smile…” those are just a few of the songs they did that I love and turn up when I hear them on the radio. Great duo and great music.
She's Gone is my favorite Hall and Oats song, but it was in their blue-eyed soul phase and just isn't what most people remember of them, which is a real shame.
"You Make My Dreams" is one of Hall & Oates best songs. During the first half of the 80's, they were on such a roll. So many terrific songs. 1980-1983 were my high school years and I consider Hall & Oates as one of the definitive artists that represented my music soundtrack of those years. Easily one of my top 5 favorite duos of the rock era.
So - I'm just a little older than you. I was discharged from the military in February 1981 - I just turned 22....it was such an interesting time for me ! First time out on my own - trying to make it with crappy jobs....struggling to pay bills and the rent - but plenty of parties ! girlfriends ! and hanging out with all the buds ! All of this early 80's music could be the soundtrack for my very own version of Dazed and Confused or Superbad or Fastimes at Ridgemont High ! It was all wonderful ...... even if I was broke all the time !
MTV was so good for the music of the ‘80s! It gave us so much diversity of music, and when a song became a hit on MTV, it was soon played on the radio regularly. MTV sucks now. They should just change their name because they rarely even play music videos anymore! I can’t even remember the last time I watched that channel. They same goes for major radio stations. They just suck. Guns and Roses is now Classic Rock? I don’t think so!
You Make My Dreams is just another reason why 80's music will always be held in such high regard..... Hall and Oates are fabricators of joy. Your Kiss Is On My List, Private Eyes, etc. You can't help but smile (like Sarah?) when Darryl Hall incredible vocals and John Oates harmonies come over the speakers..... I mean, Come on!
I realize, after your montage of their songs, that yeah they are the 80’s. Your right, absolutely right, 100%. They epitomize 80’s pop, and when you played that montage, so many memories from my teenage years came back to me, good memories, the best. Thank you.
This is such an easy song to love, with an infectious beat and happy go lucky melody. It was one of my dearly departed mother's favourite songs, and it always makes me think of her and smile. ☺️💜
What a gift it is to be able to talk to these master songwriters. Better still to see them remain humble as their music literally becomes the soundtracks to millions of peoples lives. I have fond memories of driving with my parents from Detroit to Mackinac Island when this song was hitting the airwaves. Its forever tied to a magical time in my life.
Today as I'm writing this comment, is Feb 26th, 2024. And I've been Hooked to Hall and Oates since Nov 6, 2023 when "Maneater" hit the Spotify shuffle and my life turned into something else after that. I'd say "Maneater" still beats "You Make my Dreams (Come True)" as my fsvorite song, but the way I got hooked by them is completely different. "Maneater" felt weird at first and precisely that "weirdness" kept me listening to it until the song finally got me on my knees. "You Make My Dreams" was an instant hook from the very first time. It was so recognizable and fun! That happy beat conquered my ears right at the first chorus. There's 15+ DH +JO songs on my "Repeat" list, and they've been the soundtrack of my life these last couple of months. Originally I'm a metalhead since 14yo but thanks to them the variety of genres I listen to nowadays expanded a lot. Since then, I finally understood what Marty Friedman said when he explained why he left Megadeth in 2000: "The grey colour of Heavy Metal is great but I'm an artist. And as an artist I want to have yellow, blue, green, red and purple".
You hit upon it, this is magical. Exactly right! Darryl Hall and John Oates, this song, and in general the music of the '80s, were magical. Every generation loves this song, and it will be played and integrated into movies, television shows, and other pop culture art, for generations to come. We simply will never be tired of it. The same will be said of many other songs from that incredible musical decade.
Daryl's got one of the great voices in music. "You Make My Dreams" was the perfect tempo for my stairmaster cardio workouts! They have a great catalog of music.
This powerful band brings back so many awesome memories. I was getting my first job as a commercial pilot when this song was playing on the radio. It truly made my dreams come true, as I look back at my professional life, and now I find myself four years from retirement. Thank you, Professor of Rock, for making me relive my younger days.
I was too young to appreciate the song when it charted but, hearing it in the background as my older cousins played the radio made the melody memorable. Hearing it in the Wedding Singer solidified it as a classic for me years later
Absolutely love Hall & Oates music, especially while growing up in the 80's. We danced every Friday night to their great hits! This song still gets me dancing & moving when I hear it. Great episode!!! ❤️
Amazing song and one of many by Hall and Oates. Hard to believe it only made it to number 5. They blast this tune every time the Toronto Maple Leafs score a goal on home ice, so we hear it lot up here! Thanks, Adam!
I heard this song when my mom was driving us around Medford and it came on the local radio 📻 station. By the second chorus, Mom and I were singing along; that happened a lot when we were in the car. 🥰 I grew up singing all of Hall & Oates songs because they had such heart and harmony. I also agree with you, Adam, that they are at the top of best duos list - ever. 👨🎤🎙️🧑🎤 I still sing along and remember every word. 💚
One of my all time favorites. I still remember seeing them perform it on a TV show when it came out. I was hooked back then. Anytime it comes on I turn it up and jam out!
Hall & Oates are truly great. They have to be considered one of the Top 10 Acts of all time. This was a nice song, not my favorite of all time but it really shows off their talent. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada 🍁
Love Hall and Oates. They defined the first half of the 80s. They were different than other bands and that was a big reason for their success. You Make My Dreams is a good song, but I like Adult Education and Possession Obsession more. When they left in 85, they left a void in 80s music. Thanks for the lesson today Professor!
....another "Possession..." fan! ...remember John drivin' the Cab (in the Video), and picking up the socialite who was comin' ON, to him!?? ....those were the NYC Days, Man, ha-HAA!!
The dynamic duo of pop music. The transformation of the two over the years and yet they kept a Philly soulful foundation is just awe inspiring. So lucky to have grown up on them and each hit after hit.🎉
I also discovered Hall & Oates when I was 4. That's how old I was when their first hit peaked at #4 in 1976, "Sara Smile." I remember when it was on Casey Kasem's top 40 like it was yesterday. ALL of their hits were amazing. "You Make My Dreams" is no exception. It's a fun pop song with a funky groove.
When my wife and I were expecting our second child in 1988 (a daughter), that song was the first thing that popped into my head. Sara has been the light of my life ever since. And yes, Sara has a beautiful smile!
I was aware of "Hall and Oates" when I was younger but they were not mainstream in the UK like they were in America. Having listened to their music later in life I now realise how good their music was! Great music, great energy and great fun.
I ❤ Daryl Hall and John Oates, and Bert and Ernie too. They really were a great hit making duo. They had 9 number one songs and 16 top ten. 33 total top 40 songs I ❤ how they improvise and jam live.
Such an Iconic 80's musical duo! I've always enjoyed all of their music. It's a bummer that Darryl Hall has been living with Lyme disease for the past 15 years. Would've loved to see them in concert back in the day
Awesome music from a time when music was created by artists with talent and ability and not computers and auto-tune. Hall & Oates created so many true timeless masterpieces.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee And yet they enjoy these autotuned to poison mumble rappers who I cannot even understand a word of because they sound like robots from another civilization. 🤦♀️
Adam, I can see you absolutely appreciate them as much as I do. I was born in 1969 and I remember sitting in the back seat of my parents car in 1976 when I heard Sara Smile on the radio. I will never forget it. I’ve been a lifelong fan since. Daryl’s voice has always had so much joy when he sings, he loves it, and it comes across. John too, he loves the music side, but he’s more mellow. If you look at the songs that John sings lead on they tend to be more on the bluesy side. My first concert was with them in 1984 in Pittsburgh, Pa at the Civic Arena BIG BAM BOOM Tour my Mom drove me from Frederick, Maryland. Over the years I’ve probably seen them 20+ times 😊. As long as they keep singing and sound good I will continue to go. Keep doing what you do PROFESSOR, you are providing a great service to the community and it’s a pleasure watching everything you do.
These guys were great. I appreciate these guys as a fan and as a musician. The bass lines in these songs are unbelievable. One of my favorites is Method of modern love. It would be great if you did a video on it. Thanks for acknowledging the importance of John Oates in this duo. I saw an episode of 60 minutes back in the 80s, and they portrayed Oates a a sideman, and nothing more. It's great to see him get the recognition he deserves.
That's the press for you. Oates is hardly a sideman. He wrote the choruses for "Maneater" and "Out of Touch". Two of their biggest hits. Bottom line: never believe anything from the main stream media.
One of the many gifts your channel has given me is a real appreciation of John Oates' contribution to the band. It's easy to see just the surface level view of their music as a Daryl Hall vehicle, but John did a lot of the heavy lifting with the songwriting. Thanks a ton.
I love all of their songs. I think one of their underrated songs is "Family Man" The lyrics are so so. Although the music is out of this world. I was listening to that at work one time and all the youngens thought it was great.
Well, Family Man is a Mike Oldfield composition. so it's a given that the lyrics are going to be a bit of a mess (and that there's a hint of Celtic-ness in the verse melody).
Loved them... I still love them. For about a decade or very close to it, everything they touched turned to gold. It seemed effortless. Not just songs, but albums filled with gems.
There will never be another Hall & Oates. The song is brilliant and utterly unforgettable, like so much of their music. Thanks for covering this gem and the greatest duo of all time.
Daryl Hall is such a diverse vocalist and can really do a whole wide of genres especially in their earlier albums from r +b, hard rock and bouncy pop he brought so many musical influences to hall and Oates and gave them what made them the best musical duo of the 70s and 80s
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980they did it all disco rock with x-static, new wave pop with voices and private eyes, dance rock with big bam boom and also Daryl Hall's solo albums are pretty darn good to his solo debut 1980s sacred songs was a collaboration with king crimsons Robert Fripp and it's pretty darn good his second solo outing was 1986s three hearts in the happy ending machine this time working with the Eurythmics Dave Stewart and the Fixx's guitarist Jamie West-oram guests on guitar you might know dream time and foolish pride from that album it's an underrated 80s gem well worth exploring
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 you are so right and when you bought a hall and Oates album you not only got the singles but you got a whole bunch of deep album cuts to enjoy in fact not only would I love Adam to cover dream time also on a side note I would love Daryl Hall and the Eurythmics Dave Stewart to appear on that show for an interview to but also I would love Adam to do a top 5 hall and Oates top 5 deep album cuts show to here are a few of my favorite hall and Oates deep album tracks crime pays, art of heartbreak, at tension from h2o, head above water, tell me what you want from private eyes, united state and big kids from voices, you must be good for something and nasty habits and infections from beauty on a back street and the last time, I don't want to lose you, alley Kats, don't blame it on love and serious music from along the red ledge that's my short list and I have so many more favorites what are some of yours from all of the eras of hall and Oates
No question they are they greatest duo in rock history and this song is just one example of why. Voices has always been one of my favorite albums of theirs because there isn't a bad song on it. Loved the interview with John.
The 5+ minute version of "Method Of Modern Love" REALLY is pop perfection, followed closely by "Out of Touch" and I am a hair metal/metal guy, so, that says something about the production quality and song writing abilities of Hall and Oates. Of course, they had other good songs, but, those extended versions were exceptional.
Nice tie-in with the t-shirt! And cheers for spotlighting Daryl Hall & John Oates. Between them and their classic band, unsurpassed in songcraft during their peak. Hall's voice is such an incredible instrument - the way he plays with melody & rhythm is incredible, like a jazz horn. (Also, nice to see a snippet of "Some Things are Better Left Unsaid" included - I think it's their most underrated track.)
Hall and Oats are the Righteous brothers of the 70s and 80s. I saw them do a live acoustic rendition of the Beatles: "Dont let me down" and it was epic, they are amazing musicians. I mean they literally inspired Billi Jean lmao
When the notification came up in my feed, I thought this was going to be an obscure song I had forgotten, but it's one of my favourite pick-me-up songs I always listen to!
Well, you have the advantage over some of us, for whom this song is inseparable from its orphaned-sibling-song from a certain cartoon...can I get a woo-hoo!?
I agree there isn't a better duo in popular music, they wrote songs that are completely timeless I can see their songs in movies and being played 100 years from now. It's funny John was saying we didn't make singles that the best ones just rose to the top. Just goes to show every one of their songs could become a hit, they were all that good. Great episode professor!
The key to being a musician is having an actual passion for music and putting your heart and soul into everything you do, just like Daryl Hall and John Oates.
This is the first Hall & Oates song I heard. I was 13 and it was also one of the first singles I ever bought, along with George Harrison's "All Those Years Ago" and The Who's "You Better You Bet". That bouncy keyboard opener was irresistible, and the perfect vocal harmonies just sealed the deal. I still dance and sing along every time I hear it.
Born in 1970 and they were the soundtrack of my life in the 80's! The voices, the sound you knew instantly who it was. Rich Girl and Sara Smile , hell they are all my favs. You can't pick just one song. Check our Daryl's House here on youtube and watch some episodes. Will make you appreciate Hall even more if that is possible.
Your passion and excitement is very infectious. It's just one more reason why I subscribed. I remember hearing Hall & Oats many times in the 80's and 90's on the radio. It always made me want to get up and dance. And lip sync the lyrics in the mirror. This band is part of the nostalgia that proves the 80's were great. I'm very grateful to have been a kid in the 80's. I just love the comment on Bert & Ernie. 😄 I completely agree with all the gushing sentiments shared here. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.
I think Daryl and Todd Rundgren are doing something together, John is touring Germany later this summer. An old friend asked me to come to germany and catch a couple concerts like we used to when we where younger. Concerts used to be $10-25 dollars and you could get a T-shirt for $5-10 often, now it is easy $100-400 to go to a concert for tickets, parking or uber, hotel, etc. Pat Benatar is doing concerts and the seats we looked at where almost $300 dollars a piece plus everything else to get there. Memories are much more expensive now than they used to be. I hope the gents get together and do another Hall and Oates tour if Todd Rundgren was with it would be worth a couple hundred to see them all. Hope you stay safe and healthy.
I have gotten picky who I see anymore, after having seen so many great bands in the 80's & 90's, so even though I don't like paying out the wazoo for a concert, at least I can say I have seen (so & so). Still, nothing beats seeing someone like Elton John in 1995, for a $25 3 hour concert.
Yes, they are the greatest duo, and the 80s was the greatest, all that music I remember hearing, those music videos, it was awsum, that's why I miss it, I wish it could come back, I really do.
I recall grandpa when he was still alive in the mid-'90s and saying that there were so many duos that he listened to that saying one duo is better than the other is hardly justifiable. I really miss him now.
I always loved Hall and Oats. Their music was just easy to listen to and easy to sing along with. My favorite of theirs is unquestionably "Maneater". My best friend at the time and I used to sing along at the top of our lungs in her basement. I find it hard to pick the catchiest song for the 80s. I graduated high school in 1983 and went directly to college. I was in class from about 8am until 3, had at least one night class each semester, and worked two part time jobs. For 5 years, I lived in a blur of driving to school, home and work. The radio was always playing, but I think my mind was taken up with assignments, tuition and bills. Now in my late 50s, I find myself drawn to 70s music with a smattering of the 60s, 80s, 90s 2000 up to the present. I have to say the 70s and 80s are my go to music most of the time. Two amazing decades of music.
Two of their best songs..... "Did it in a minute" and "Adult Education," you don't hear as much today as their other songs. I don't know how those 2 guys produced such great music.
@@RBS_ Did It in a Minute and its #33 follow-up, Your Imagination, followed Private Eyes and I Can't Go For That a few months earlier , and preceded Maneater from the next album a few months later.
It is making me laugh because the 80s songs are probably why aerobic classes were so big back then. Every song needed to make you want to jump like Daryl Hall.
Having come of age during the late 70s/early 80s, I respect your choice. Having said that, mine was different. "Big Bam Boom" tour started in the spring of 85. (I had just graduated HS) Within two weeks, they did a tour date in Shreveport, La, where I grew up. Till Tuesday (with Aimee Mann) opened. Hall & Oates opened with the original album full version of the intro "Dance on your knees" and immediately went into "Out of Touch." At that time, general admission was still practiced, so me and my girl were basically 3rd rowish. It WAS impressive! (And for those of you that don't know, that concert took place in what was known as the Hirsch Memorial auditorium. It still stands, but what is special about it was that is where the American lexicon of "Elvis has left the building." was first spoken. There were mobs inside AND outside, so in reality, that was never true. But that is where they were first spoken in 1955.)
Not only is it one of the greatest songs of the 80’s but is one of the greatest of all time, even if your dead and that song starts playing it will automatically get your deceased foot to start tapping.
Voices is a great album, through and through. Another one that I picked up immediately after hearing How Does It Feel To Be Back. Sara Hall deserves props for elevating their songwriting.
It snowed hugely in West Texas when Hall & Oates were playing the Odessa Dome so nobody’s parents would let any of us drive the 25 miles to the show. So they’re still on my list. But I made up for it when I won a plane ticket, hotel an tickets to see Madonna with my 2nd favorite band, Level 42! Love Madonna but I was there for Mark King slapping funky bass with the Gould Bros!! Greatest concert ever. Imagine my disappointment when I took my husband to see Madonna about 12 years ago and the show was awful. But my greatest rock moment was being in the audience for the first concert in 25 years for The Police!! I’m a concert junkie, Prof!!
Daryl Hall has one of the all time greatest voices! Love Hall and Oates! Got married in 1981 and they were a bigg part of that romace! Too bad it didn't last but i still sing every song when they come on the radio! ❤❤❤
I would definitely put them in the conversation of greatest duo. They were just everywhere on the radio. Such amazing talent in one group. Hard to imagine that ever happens again
I am an old school rocker. Was taken to a Hall and Oates concert in SF Bay Area, decades ago. I didn't want to go. This was 30 years ago. Still the BEST concert I have ever been to
What I like about the Professor of Rock is his endless ability to make any songwriter, singer or band, seem totally awesome. I once a had a close friend who’s favorite band, of all time, of which she listened to constantly……was Abba. 🤯🔫
Nothing beats the 80s alright. The normalcy of life without the divisions we see today. 80s music is so magical... Why I guess my favorite song of all time was Magic by Olivia Newton-John...
One of the first albums I ever bought was Beauty on a Back Street. The album had a slightly darker vibe and lyrics. Years later I picked up Voices and could hardly believe it was the same duo. You Make My Dreams, and Your Kiss (Is On My List) were so happy! I love that they didn’t stick to the “same old” and instead kept growing and going wherever the music took them. What Oates said about their focus being on making good albums makes perfect sense when each album has its own unique feeling.
I love this song & dynamic duo! That’s what we called them as teens in our town. 🤣 I’m glad to see these 80’s Icons finding & expanding to new generations! Personally, I think a LOT of it is because those of us who were young IN the 80’s became parents & naturally played our music throughout their formative years. This duo & others bands & artists from the 80s still SOUND like themselves & used NO AUTO TUNE! Some of their voices have mellowed due to age & others didn’t but they ALL sound great to me. Thanks for another GREAT episode Prof!
These guys are the master of the “bridge”. I’ve always hated bridge sections because they usually sound like they just crammed a few extra seconds in the song just to make it reach the average 3 minute length, but these guys always had great bridge sections, especially this one where he plays that Dm9 chord and goes into the next section. Such legends.
The ultimate feel good intro and song! We played the album Voices relentlessly in 1981... Some very good deep cuts there and truly diverse, including "United State"... Bert & Ernie... Lol PoR!!!
Great minds think alike 🙂. For a long time, I've felt this is the perfect pop song. Light and bubbly, awesome vocal layering, with a few power chords thrown in to appeal to the rockers. Awesome!
Ooh yeah, I'll agree that "You Make My Dreams" is a totally 80s sounding song. But the song which truly flashed me back to the mid 1980s when I heard it for the first time (as far as I am aware) in 2008 was Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry". That sounds just so very 80s.
Poll: What is your pick for the catchiest song of the 80s?
Very difficult because so many get stuck in my head:
Come on Eileen
Centerfold
Too Shy
Straight Up
Careless Whisper
In the Air Tonight
Katrina and the Waves: "Walking on Sunshine"
The Cars: "Magic"
Matthew Wilder: "Break My Stride"
The Romantics: "Talking in Your Sleep"
Murray Head: "One Night in Bangkok"
Either "I'm Still Standing" "Come on Eileen" "Let my Love Open the Door", "Alive and Kicking", "Out of Touch", "Word up"...There's so many to choose from!
So many to choose from. But one that jumps into my mind is "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Wave.
Hard to pick just one, so I'm scrolling through my all-time favorite songs list & picking some of the catchiest ones:
"Another One Bites The Dust"- Queen
"Funkytown"- Lipps, Inc.
"Upside Down"- Diana Ross
"Queen Of Hearts"- Juice Newton
"The Tide Is High"- Blondie
"I Love Rock 'N Roll"- Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
"Goody Two Shoes"- Adam Ant
"The Longest Time"- Billy Joel
"Faith"- George Michael
"Your Mama Don't Dance"- Poison
"Back To Life"- Soul II Soul
Saw them in concert in the late’80s. 2 1/2 hour show, no opening act, and took a 30 minute break. Arguably the best concert I’ve ever seen.
Very cool!
I saw them last year and they were still amazing
I envy you. 😊
Sounds great! Wish I was there at that time. I was a metal head at the time, but now realize how many H&O songs had planted permanent ear worms in my brain! Even without ever buying any of their albums! Just what I heard on the radio and MTV!
I entirely agree - saw them in the early 80s and their concert blew me away!
Best concert I've ever been to to this day!

Their voices together? Pure bliss.
Daryl Hall is to music what Harrison Ford is to movies. ICONIC and unmatchable.
No question. Good call.
The Indiana Jones of rock & soul…
Spot On!
Perfect!

“She’s Gone” is still one of my two or three all-time favorite pop songs. Such strong feelings of loss and longing.
It’s a masterpiece.
Not only the greatest duo in history they will be the greatest duo ever. How can you go beyond on perfection?
“ She’s gone, 1 on 1, Sara smile…” those are just a few of the songs they did that I love and turn up when I hear them on the radio. Great duo and great music.
She's Gone is my favorite Hall and Oats song, but it was in their blue-eyed soul phase and just isn't what most people remember of them, which is a real shame.
I agree. They’re fantastic.
It's so catchy. Whenever I hear it, I'm singing it for days after
They made two great albums during that time period, Voices and H2O.

These guys ruled MTV. So many hits. They really didnt need mtv im sure but it made them even bigger. Great duo.
Amen!
It’s a good thing, because more people were able to see Daryl’s haircut! 😜
Certainly for me! I was into hard rock, but developed a fancy for these guys for seeing them on MTV, back when they played music videos.

You nailed it Bud, so true
I am truly thankful for their music.
I realize, after your montage of their songs, that yeah they are the 80’s. Your right, absolutely right, 100%.
They epitomize 80’s pop, and when you played that montage, so many memories from my teenage years came back to me, good memories, the best. Thank you.
What a great duo and a great decade
One of the TRUE defining acts of the decade.
This is such an easy song to love, with an infectious beat and happy go lucky melody. It was one of my dearly departed mother's favourite songs, and it always makes me think of her and smile. ☺️💜
So glad to hear Trina!
Was her name Sara? 🤨
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 No, Gina, actually, though she liked that song as well.

I have fond memories of driving with my parents from Detroit to Mackinac Island when this song was hitting the airwaves. Its forever tied to a magical time in my life.
It's an honor for sure! Thanks for watching.
Great comment!
It made all of our dreams come true, right?
You made me feel nostalgic just reading that. And I’ve never driven from Detroit to Mackinac Is!
@@ProfessorofRock always a pleasure!
Since then, I finally understood what Marty Friedman said when he explained why he left Megadeth in 2000:
"The grey colour of Heavy Metal is great but I'm an artist. And as an artist I want to have yellow, blue, green, red and purple".
Hall & Oates had so many great songs...... Will never forget dancing around the livingroom with my daughters to their music
Love it!
I played this song for my friends at school last week!
The Best Duo in the History of Music...PERIOD. TRUTH!!!!...FACTS!!!!!...My All Time Favorite Duo of ALL TIME!!!!!
A great duo, a unique sound and a band that isn't embarrassing to admit you like. I've never heard a bad song from H&O.
That's because there aren't any! Thanks Jim
Even my mom loves them.
You Make My Dreams and Private Eyes were my favorite songs at different times during my youth. These guys were awesome!
Both songs are amazing!
Both so catchy.
It’s an immortal pop standard.
Daryl's got one of the great voices in music. "You Make My Dreams" was the perfect tempo for my stairmaster cardio workouts!
They have a great catalog of music.
The best!
It is a good gym song…
Early 70's is when the radio introduced me to Hall and Oats. When Rich Girl came out. I did a double take when the word Bitch was used in the lyrics.
I remember it making me laugh.
I'm with you, it took a few decades and hearing it in movies for me to gradually realize what a treasure this song is.
The Wedding Singer introduced the next generation to these classics.
Absolutely love Hall & Oates music, especially while growing up in the 80's. We danced every Friday night to their great hits! This song still gets me dancing & moving when I hear it. Great episode!!! ❤️
Have to agree, it just makes me want to move as I hear it.
Amazing song and one of many by Hall and Oates. Hard to believe it only made it to number 5. They blast this tune every time the Toronto Maple Leafs score a goal on home ice, so we hear it lot up here! Thanks, Adam!
...look at me Top 10, Sir Robster; you'll see who they were fightin' with, then...
For sure
Thanks Robster!
And everyone breaks into singalong mode…
Perfect use of that song.
So do I.
One of my all time favorites. I still remember seeing them perform it on a TV show when it came out. I was hooked back then. Anytime it comes on I turn it up and jam out!
Thanks Eric!
And belt it out.
Thank you for featuring this song, professor.
Hall & Oates are truly great. They have to be considered one of the Top 10 Acts of all time. This was a nice song, not my favorite of all time but it really shows off their talent. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada 🍁
Cheers!
Hit after hit after hit after hit after hit!
One of the coolest and best groups of the 80's for sure.
Ya they did! Best duo ever@
Don’t forget, they had a hit in the late 80s with another great song titled Everything Your Heart Desires.
But then they came back in 1988 remember!
Sara Smile is a beautiful song.
Sara Smile is my favorite H&O song. Beautiful song.
When my wife and I were expecting our second child in 1988 (a daughter), that song was the first thing that popped into my head. Sara has been the light of my life ever since. And yes, Sara has a beautiful smile!
I was also 4. My Mom exposed me to endless pop music when I was very young, so I remember it when it was out 😊
Whenever one of their songs comes on the radio I'm singing along, I always have!
One of my fave Hall & Oates tunes!❤
It's so good!
I love it!
Mine too!
I was aware of "Hall and Oates" when I was younger but they were not mainstream in the UK like they were in America. Having listened to their music later in life I now realise how good their music was! Great music, great energy and great fun.
At least you got all those cool new wave bands!
I ❤ Daryl Hall and John Oates, and Bert and Ernie too.
They really were a great hit making duo. They had 9 number one songs and 16 top ten. 33 total top 40 songs
I ❤ how they improvise and jam live.
...LOVE the H+O! ...I was obsessed with them 1982-1985! ...they were my 1st Concert! "Big Bam Boom" at MSG....GOOD TIMES....
@RBS I sat in the 3rd row. Good times for sure.
Thanks Catherine!
Not a bad song in their catalog.
@XxLilly_playsXx Kiz I agree. That's why I can't pick a favorite.
Such an Iconic 80's musical duo! I've always enjoyed all of their music. It's a bummer that Darryl Hall has been living with Lyme disease for the past 15 years. Would've loved to see them in concert back in the day
I agree. He's a warrior!
It’s so sad! Before hearing his case I had no idea that the disease could last that long.
Awesome music from a time when music was created by artists with talent and ability and not computers and auto-tune. Hall & Oates created so many true timeless masterpieces.
Well said

@@jonsimon5779 people that aren't musicians see things different than we do. It was obvious on this interview.
One of the many gifts your channel has given me is a real appreciation of John Oates' contribution to the band. It's easy to see just the surface level view of their music as a Daryl Hall vehicle, but John did a lot of the heavy lifting with the songwriting. Thanks a ton.
Iconic Duo for sure, really never lost their strive and momentum at any point. Of course, great stories can go with great songs!
And they are still going strong!
I love the joyride back to my youth this channel takes me on. Well done prof!
1975 Sara Smile turned me on to Hall and Oates. I can agree they are the greatest duo ever.
You know it
Yes!
A great duo with great music that fit that time. Thanks Hall & Oates and Professor
First heard them in 74, been a fan ever since.
They're the best!
They’ve been at it for over 50 years.
There will never be another Hall & Oates. The song is brilliant and utterly unforgettable, like so much of their music. Thanks for covering this gem and the greatest duo of all time.
They are awesome one of the greatest bands ever. Great song

Hall and Oates and Phil Collins were 80's hit machines. They were all over the radio back then.
Daryl Hall is such a diverse vocalist and can really do a whole wide of genres especially in their earlier albums from r +b, hard rock and bouncy pop he brought so many musical influences to hall and Oates and gave them what made them the best musical duo of the 70s and 80s
they made their mark for sure! Thanks George!

Their big sound in 1984 was so cool.
Awesome!
Professor threw me off a little bit with the title…but I was pleased when I found out.
I'll always think of the impromptu flash mob in "500 Days of Summer." It makes me want to get up and dance! 💃😻
Such a great scene. It's hard not to get up and dance along.
Same here. It immediately comes to my mind when I hear it.
Well, you have the advantage over some of us, for whom this song is inseparable from its orphaned-sibling-song from a certain cartoon...can I get a woo-hoo!?
Every time a Hall and Oates song plays on my car radio, my mood lifts, and that is a good thing...

He's amazing for sure
He’s so friendly and personable.
Love Daryl's House. Think he's coming back post-covid?
Inflation ruins everything. 😔
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Sure does, 🥲
I have gotten picky who I see anymore, after having seen so many great bands in the 80's & 90's, so even though I don't like paying out the wazoo for a concert, at least I can say I have seen (so & so). Still, nothing beats seeing someone like Elton John in 1995, for a $25 3 hour concert.
@@lobitome Those days and prices are gone. But I think he still does pretty long concerts.
I always think of the intro song to the “DuckTales” cartoon every time I hear this song.
Look it up and see.
I just made a comment about that, and it's true. Coincidence or inspiration?
Omg I’m not the only one 😂
I will be graduating high school next year, and I absolutely love the 80s. Hall and Oates made it magical.
Two of their best songs..... "Did it in a minute" and "Adult Education," you don't hear as much today as their other songs.
I don't know how those 2 guys produced such great music.
....I have NO IDEA why "Did It..." just dissipated from memories! ....I guess it was a underground "NYC" thing, thanks to "SCTV"....

The last surviving member of
Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed away.
R.I.P Gary Rossington .
When Gary and Allen Collins jammed live it was a frenzy of rock.
I saw that, very sad. We lose so many icons to the wheel of time. I can only imagine the jams they are having, celestial sounds.
The Rossington Collins Band are one of the forgotten groups of the 80s. They were damn good.
It’s so sad. Fly high, free bird 🕊️
If you need to be rembered how good these guys are, watch Darryl’s house where they play live with a range of artists. Blows your mind.
Not only is it one of the greatest songs of the 80’s but is one of the greatest of all time, even if your dead and that song starts playing it will automatically get your deceased foot to start tapping.
Ray Charles can see it from a mile away.
Great memories from those songs.
They are the kings of harmonizing and choruses.

My FAVORITE Daryl Hall and John Oates song! Saw them live in concert in 2019, they're STILL awesome!
I've never been a pop fan, BUT, I've always loved Hall and Oates. They've been my favorite duo as long as I can remember.
I love this song & dynamic duo! That’s what we called them as teens in our town. 🤣
I’m glad to see these 80’s Icons finding & expanding to new generations!
Awesome!
Hall and Oates on of my top faves. So many songs and memories.
Fantastic duo. They are musical genius. I remember thinking man these guys are good.
No question... Good call Noel.
Nobody could pull off what they did.
