  • 👋🏼 Hello! Today, Jiji goes to Ginza (銀座), Tokyo, on one of the last hot days of summer!
The streets were closed for the pedestrian zone, giving us a chance to explore Ginza’s famous shopping and entertainment district in a unique way, without the usual traffic. On this 91°F day, we enjoyed the vibrant energy of this iconic area, known for its luxury boutiques, department stores, and trendy cafés.
Ginza's pedestrian zone, known as Ginza Hokōsha Tengoku (歩行者天国 or "Pedestrian Paradise"), is a special event where a major section of Chuo-dori Street in the Ginza district of Tokyo is closed to vehicle traffic, allowing pedestrians to freely roam the streets. This closure usually happens on weekends and public holidays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM (or until 6:00 PM during summer months).
During these times, the typically bustling shopping streets transform into wide, car-free spaces. This provides a relaxed environment for people to walk, shop, take pictures, and enjoy the ambiance of the high-end shopping district, which is home to luxury brands, fine dining, and cultural attractions. The experience of strolling through Ginza without worrying about cars adds a peaceful and leisurely atmosphere to the area, making it a popular attraction for both locals and tourists.
In addition to shopping and dining, the pedestrian zone sometimes hosts street performances and small pop-up events. It’s also a great time to admire the architecture of the area, including buildings like the iconic Wako clock tower and the Ginza Six shopping complex.
It’s a perfect setting for filming or taking photographs, as the street closure provides open perspectives of Ginza’s stylish urban landscape without the usual traffic.
Ginza is not only one of Tokyo’s most prestigious districts but also a historical spot where East meets West in style and culture. With wide, tree-lined streets and modern architecture, this area offers a special blend of tradition and innovation.
