EVERY SYSTEM in these cars is designed as a profit center with a premature failure point. It's the same sweet story with BMW, VW... They are super well engineered to rope in the customers once the honeymoon is over yet they are indeed fun to drive...
Most E-class feature plastic seats not even leather (rare package)
      Smelly oil leaks
      Loose wiper arms
      Noisy air blower
      soft dusty brake discs
      cheap control arm bushings
      AGM batteries charging issues
      camshaft phasers... old saga!
      short lived timing chains
      blown tensioner seals
      wobbly plastic belt idlers
      50kMi only spark plugs!
      50kMi tranny ATF!
      Failed PCV intake oil ingestion
      CAN modules: buggy software!!
      crazy Keyless-Go drain
      ...
Benz ride suspensions are great and famously priceless to repairs because they are built to wear out.
Benz quality is lip service like Ford... "Job No1 !" 😉

If anything to watch out for from a MB of this time, it would be some of the electric components that just age like in any other car. Otherwise, there’s a reason why w212s are used as one of the certain generations of MB cars as Police cars and taxis in Germany. MB certainly knows their way with engines.

spot on review. My 2012 E350 has the cramshaft sensor issue. It just happens rarely (one or twice per year), and the issue comes and goes. It will make engine light on and after a while it gets back to normal. I don't bother. had it for over 8 years and over 90K, no other issue. (of cause the leather cracks on driver seat)

Re the transmission (722.9): If the turbine speed sensors are bad you’ll see MIL codes. Before taking down the valve body I recommend a fluid service. My 2007 C230 with same transmission had the speed sensor problem. Took the valve body out to separate the conductor plate off for rebuild and that took care of it. I was a little apprehensive about the DIY but took my time. Vendor for conductor plate refurb has excellent YT vids for the procedure. Doing it this way avoids having to program a replacement conductor plate to the car.

I have the Camshaft Position Sensor issue and I am making a video of my experience. I also suspect that Oil Pressure issue may also be found as the P0336 error is often due to the known oil leak that gets into the wiring harness and eventually "can or may" damage the ECM which is good luck good day bye bye.

Only in North America I hear people complaining so much about Mercedes and the reason i find is that 70% of all Mercedes Mechanics, even at the dealership, are not good. They still dont understand the car...the car intimidates them compared to European Mercedes Mechanics or even middle east and Africa roadside Mercedes mechanics are way better than the crappy ones in the States and Canada. Secondly, the prices for the parts and Labor in North America are astronomically expensive so most used ones owners turn to ignore even small maintenance then it gets worse. Ive seen in Frankfurt Duesseldorf Stuttgart etc their taxis are C Class and it can go more than half a million and still look new and strong compared to the Crappy Toyota camrys you have as taxis North America. Even in Africa with bad roads a well maintained Mercedes will still looks stronger than Any Japanese car and can easily go more than 400k

It's kind of like buying a 4cyl turbo F150 & saying F150 are junk because it's always in the shop or broke down. You should have spent more money & got an V8 F150. You are asking a lot out the 4cyl & it can't handle it.

Many of the problems discussed in the vid have nothing to do with owner neglect! They just happen.
Crank shaft position sensors sometimes fail. Usually a simple original Bosch part for $20 bux. Ripped seam in the seat on these cars is not due to neglect. Nor is squeaks inside cabin or sliding ashtray compartment. And fading interior wood trim was due to mercedes not including enough UV block in the clear coat which mercedes eventually corrected.
Every car no matter what brand has its issues.

2014 E350 purchased new in 2013, 85k miles. Essentially zero problems, no major issues. Although admittedly I do a ton of preventative maintenance (frequent oil changes, already done transmission, transfer case and front/rear diff services, etc). Only annoying thing is the aux battery which I've replaced twice, and some issue with a loose pulley. Only annoying issue is A/C has frozen up (??) when used a lot in hot weather, requiring shutting it off for a few minutes to melt/clear, then works fine. Have had A/C serviced 3-4 times, apparently it is somewhat of a common issue.

The interior creaks are well known. The wood fading was only on the earlier models, and was covered under warranty. The seat cover issue does not apply, for the most part, to the real leather seats. The other problems are not common. The trunk issue is most likely just a badly adjusted trunk bumper and latch. Overall, this generation is very reliable and well built, partly due to being assembled in Germany (well, at least the ones sold in North America).

Thank you for telling me what to look for before I sign and drive away. I understand the reasons why you didn't, but I wish you had given a range of repair costs for the items that are mechanical in nature. Technicians charge different rates and there are garages a plenty... but not where I live. The nearest MB dealers are 1 and 2 hours from me. There is 1 mechanic specializing in European cars (and he actually charges more hourly than the dealer... I have a Passat, too, so I am familiar with his prices). I own a 2010 E550. I've owned every E-class since a 1993 400E (W124). This latest one is by far the best in quality although like most cars, has a few quarks and issues. I bought this car new and ordered it to my specs. I have 97,000 miles on it. Following are a few problems I've had: I had to replace the starter twice because it was dragging badly and drawing to many amps. I don't have Sirrius radio anymore and the dealer won't tell me what's wrong without charging me a gazillion dollars to investigate but I think it's the satellite control module. It eats brakes frequently but perhaps that's because I go fast and stop fast (can't help it with this car, it's fast for a 10-year old sedan). I have the same problem with the cupholder cover. Fixed it once under warranty but the problem returned. Otherwise, no problems with interior. I've had to replace one rear shock and it was expensive since I have airmatic. I also have a leak somewhere that the car will drop if it isn't ran for 2-3 days. I replace a headlight unit. It has curve sensing option so it was expensive. Some minor oil leaks and bushings replaced. Otherwise, this has been a great car and has a V8! All together, I've spent about $85k for this car, including maintenance and repairs. That come to about $660/month to drive a V8 Mercedes Benz for 10 years and it has almost all the features of new cars.

In 7 years of ownership, I've experienced 2 issues.
I have had the thrust link issue which required the bushing to be replaced, and I also experienced interior issues.
Interior issues: cup holder cover doesn't retract all the way (same as the video), squaky panels when you apply pressure, volume knobb on the radio is not responsive (turning the volume up or down doesn't work if I spin the dial faster than a moderately slow pace), and ripped seats (ripped seat, same as shown, and also ripped seat bolsters.)

I have a 2016 E300 and had a transmission issue (similar but maybe not the exact same one as mentioned in the video) after 3 1/2 years. Fortunately the car was still under Mercedes's 4 year bumper to bumper warranty, so they replaced the transmission for free. Otherwise it would have costs me $10,000 CAD. In a way it did cost me since after that experience I got the extended warranty which increased the warranty to 7 years for $4,500 CAD and then got the extended warranty on the 2019 Mercedes GLC that I bought, an additional $3,500. But both cars are covered for a full 7 years which by that time I will probably traded them in fro newer Mercedes.

Get those seats repaired at an Auto Trim shop, save some money take the seats out ( 2 from seats) and drop them off. Not difficult to get done and should come back looking great. Ideally, you may want to get the complete covers replaced as aligning topstitching is difficult if replacing a panel. Could be tricky to get the exact match for Vinyl but maybe the trim shop can get something very close you would never know.
I see online the original covers are ridiculous prices, order from Germany and pay 400 euro for a seat base only.

I have the Mercedes E350 2011, bought it with 92,000 Miles now have 123,000. I don't have idea how the previous owner took care of the car, but I'm the type of person that really takes care of the car. Of the problems mention on the video, I have the squeaking noise coming from the interior parts, the fading on the wood trim, the center console door not closing properly, the wheel knob not working properly, and the broken seat. I took the car to an upholster to fix the seat and they did it for $250. The other interior issues still present on the car. Another issue is the buttons pealing. Like I said, I don't have idea how well the previous owner of this car took care of it, but I had been fixing this issues one by one and on my own time. Mechanical issues I had at the moment of purchase was oil leaking problem (fixed), tire alignment (fixed), head light bulbs HID (fixed), broken windshield water jets (fixed). Overall Mercedes Benz build great cars and this model is not an exception. If I were the previous owner of this car, probably I wouldn't had non of this issues I mention before or at least just few of them. I have a great mechanic here on my hometown, and I can say that this car is now on good hands.

Had an E350 cabriolet, just sold it to my friend, because it’s sound, loverly car, 120k on it starts runs perfectly, does great mpg, no upholstery issues, the tyres do wear on the inside as they are set up that way on the German cars, swap them over when they are wearing to even them up. The only issue I had, which is common is the steering lock. It activates automatically on them and if it failed you can’t start the car or move the steering. It’s a little unit on the column that takes a signal from the key, a small motor drives a pin and either the electrics fail, or the motor does. The chap that came and fixed mine said this was a common fault …so if you have one you can remove, replace it, before it failed as it’s a lot easier on your driveway than when it’s locked in a car park….otherwise …great car.

With the transmission issue replacing the conductor plate, which is what the speed sensor problem could be is really not that much more difficult than changing the pin and stem assembly in the command knob inside the passenger compartment. It’s a little bit more messy and there’s fluid involved, but the actual work is in many ways just about as complicated. if you do DI, then doing the conductor plate in the transmission is not that difficult. Would like to see expanded versions of these types of videos, but with repairs included.

I have a 2011 A207 E550 Convertible. The interior wood pieces are long, and over time with temperature expansion and contraction or getting snagged on clothing, they will come out of their mounts or snap.
If you go through big puddles, the rocker panels may hold water if the drain holes are plugged. You will hear the water slosh around on accelerating and stopping.
I have 84,000 miles. Car is clean, so far so good. I wish mine had fog lamps and not the L shaped LEDs and I with I had a rear fog light too. The AMG wheels are not too expensive on ebay and I'd like to keep a front and rear ready to go as a spare. But these tires are kept at higher pressures and have not had a rim crack yet. My 2003 CLK 430 I had a couple of cracked rims.

That weird shifting between 1st and 3rd is because the car by default is in comfort mode which puts it in 2nd gear automatically when you put it in drive. Putting it in sport puts it in 1st when the car goes in drive. Problem is you can't default to sport on startup.

I have a 2012 E550 AMG edition and I have the A/C mold smell problem. Other than that the car runs smooth and no interior issues. The stance and look (AMG package bumper) I think is one of the main few reasons why I bought this car. Even though it’s a 2012 model it’s still a head turner! But definitely want to get into a 2016 or newer E63 or S63.

That smell would be your cabin filter. I just replaced it on my car because I had that issue too.

keller5973 MB settled a lawsuit concerning their HVAC system. They're replacing the smelling ones. I'd check it out

2010 e350 sport 126k miles. Skid/traction control light pops on, "esc inoperative" displays in info center in cluster and vehicle goes into "limp mode". Can't wait to chase it down. Trying to narrow it down but could be throttle pedal, brake light switch, corroded harness somewhere and a plethora of other things. Any tips or info is greatly appreciated!

I have one from 2012 - never experienced these problems. However, I do need to disinfect the HVAC system from time to time due to a known "mold" smell. Wondering if the problems are on earlier cars.

of course its a famous problem!
You just need the HVAC maintenance. Benz has a specific cleaning procedure to try and clean evaporator from passages but it only last so long...
Best thing may be to turn off AC before arriving to melt any ice and help drain water during driving else moldy growth, sick air guaranteed 🤭

Have you changed your cabin filters & carbon filters?

    • @Drontis
      @Drontis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I used to have that problem until I Replaced the cabin air filter with one that has activated charcoal. Cheap ones dont and have bad seals. I also may have sprayed a solution in where that filter is with the heat on high.
