- HoYoverse has been teasing Griseo’s return for a long time. Many people speculated that she was connected to the Sky People, and would return in APHO3. HoYoverse, however, subverted everyone's expectations and decided to bring her back in Part 1.5 and make the grown up version of her playable in version 7.1. What sparked many discussions in the community is not Griseo’s return by itself, but the fact that she grew up! Which is strange, because MANTIS are not supposed to age… Or do they?! If you're curious, join me in this video, as we will try to answer the most puzzling question that the community had for the past few months: “How did Griseo grow up?”
One short disclaimer! If you’re expecting a straight answer... I don’t have one. I can only speculate. This is something that, in my opinion, HoYoverse should have addressed in the story. That being said, I tried my best to come up with a small theory that might change the way we are looking at MANTIS powers. The notion that hinders us is the idea that “MANTIS can’t age”, which was never stated in the game - or any external material, as far as I am aware. While the dialogue from some of the Honkai Impact 3rd manga lowkey implies that MANTIS don’t age, we have plenty of other evidence that suggests they do... but very slowly.
This video also goes over some important information regarding Griseo, such as her powers, what happened to her in the past 50.000 years, and how did she manage to escape the repeating dream and reunite with Fu Hua.

I apologize for my voice sounding weird, I was still sick when I recorded this video!
I have a few things that I want to point out! Due to my health issues, I have been slowly working on this video for about one month. When I wrote the script and recorded it, Chapter 42 wasn’t out yet, so that’s why you don’t see me mentioning anything related to Chapter 42 in the video. There are a few points that I want to address due to having more context now.
First, while we first learned that Marah took the cleaners and left Sa in Chapter 39, Chapter 42 gives us more context. Now it's a lot more likely that the one behind the Sky People in APHO is Marah and not Sa. The timeline is still a bit blurry, and while I said in the video that the Sky People that the SUGARs encountered were Sa’s cleaner, we don’t know the exact time when Marah left. We know that it was before Phosphorus even existed, but we also know that the SUGARs were around for millions of years. So, it may be Marah who targeted them, or Marah while still working for Sa. I’m not sure, yet. But I’m almost certain that the Sky People in APHO are under Marah’s control.
Second, while we know that Fu Hua, Fuxi, and Nuwa were active for less than 5.000 years, there are some pieces of text that might suggest that Kevin and Su were active for a longer period of time. (At least Kevin)
Third. While I said in the video that Griseo became capable of doing the maintenance of the Ark by herself, the text only mentions that she can make small equipment and replace components.
Forth. In the video I said that the planet on which Griseo wanted to stop "would later become Phosphorus", but Chapter 42 revealed that it was already named Phosphorus by Vita at that time. Griseo arrived after Sa already created the city, but it had no humans yet. (That's why She needed the Ark)

What do you think about Su's statement that says their solar system has an imaginary barrier zone that encloses it so that space travel is limited
This shows that the understanding of the imaginary barrier is already known in the HSR, rather than the Hi3+Su also not being able to pass through the imaginary barrier, which is surprising. Because even Emanator Aeon's class can still easily pass through the imaginary barrier
A Question: Will you makes Chapter 40 - 42 Recap ?, I'm still confused by the whole Vita things, and how Human Sa become the current Sa. I always thought that Vita's flashback is actually Sa's flashback.

I think what's easily missable is putting aside an abnormal factor in regenerative abilities beyond your peers, 'growing up' and 'growing old' should be understood a bit differently. One is maturing into adulthood and the other is when your biological processes are starting to decline and decay. It's understandable if a MANTIS doesn't seem to grow old to maintain a prime state, but it should also be possible to grow up to attain a new prime state either through slow adjustments over time or due to sudden stimuli and pressing needs. It's also possible that a MANTIS could decline towards an end of their lifespan without showing the same signs of aging that we'd normally recognize as growing old.
14:20 I can accept the explanation you gave. But I'll admit I struggle more to accept she's an adult now rather than questioning myself how did she even become one, after all we spent a hefty amount of time seeing her as a child/teen in chapters/elysian realm
the elysian realm is just data of what was recorded, data itself doesn't have biological features, i don't see how that's confusing

I had theory that Mobius basicaly explained in ER that Mantis surgery wasnt perfected by her and immortality, lack of aging and kevin cold hearth were just side effects of it not desired once. Griseo is a last Mantis made and by the time Mobius could have perfected the procedure and remove side effects like lack of aging or just deciede whether she want to keep that ablity or not
In Kevin case, he had Garuda in his chimera gene, and Hua outright said his regeneration even surpassed her in Garuda form.
So even if we assume only MANTIS with certain special abilities don't age, Kevin is one of them.
I think mobius who did her surgery probably made sure she could age. As some one she did not want her trap in a child body her whole life.

Kevin has also too many honkai genes to know how the hell his body works... Su and Griseo are the only ones i can think of that would age a little faster than those two. (considering only the ones that lived to the next era)

Su and Kevin of course also spent quite some time in the Sea of Quanta and Sumeru respectively (~1500 years in Kevin's case iirc) so I think it is safe to assume they also didn't age as much for that reason.
Fu Hua is really such a special case with being truly aging while also being cursed with a perfect memory. I always found it weird to consider her the default mantis.

People might latch onto Fu Hua since he is given the most air time of all the MANTIS, or was for quite along time. Its honestly a shame we never got to learn more about the Flamechasers or Mobius's surgeries. To me Kalpas interests me the most.

I remember redditors complained about this and their argument is always "but but but MANTIS can't age!!" while there's no single mention/quote that say that at all. I guess probably because it is stated that Fu Hua can't age and assume that everyone is the same, but the catch is that at that time Hoyo hasn't introduced other Flame-Chasers other than Kevin and Su. Funny thing is, most them always said "I don't follow the story anymore, the story going downhill after Everlasting Blaze , etc, etc" and glorified the "Manga" instead of believing the recent information from the game itself just like you said.

Tho it doesn't help that Hoyo themselves tweak (or even outright retcon) some parts of the lore so it sometimes get pretty messy, especially with the internet's propensity to get hung up on things.
In case anyone forgot, Kebin also have Garuda and WAY SUPERIOR than the one Hua fused with. Kevin said MANTIS age VERY SLOWLY and Herrscher is the same. But Homu if you look at Welt when he first became Herrscher he still a kid back then and sometimes later he grow up to adult. Even in APHO he still growing but slow, probably not as slow as MANTIS tbh. Also IIRC Theresa side effects prevent her from grow up so IMO MANTIS can grow up and once they react adulthood, they age very slowly
I agree and do think that Welt still ages relatively normally, but Herrscher of Reason is slightly different from other herrschers because it can change its body at will and recreate it if it is destroyed
Yeah Theresa's reason for not growing physically is way different, I forgot what it was specifically but it had nothing to do with MANTISes or Herrschers
But kevin hasn't fire powers relate to garuda, as far i know... the only Honkai beast fused with kevin was Parvati... and that made his body so cold at the point he cant touch or be touched by anyone...

It was never stated that MANTIS can't age/grow and Mobi is even stated to be able to grow
Hua has the Garuda hyper regen and so does Kevin, and also the fact that they might be, in a sense, similar to a Saiyan, in which they stop undergoing heavy changes past a certain age (which would help with Su's part, plus SoQ shenanigans/Sumeru/magic/BS)
Also discussing i also mentioned how hyper regenerative powers allow you to stop aging in other media like comics or anime, like Wolverine, who is like, dunno, 300 years old, but his hyper regen helps him stay relatively young

Dude just take a look at her mother, Blanca. Griseo had a good heritage long before she "eat all those cabbage". While in mental health... Idk how person can become "adult" without proper social interactions (I can't count those in her Ark dreams as "proper interactions"). Like I prefer to think she's still kind of a teenager even with that sinful grown woman's body that almost copied her mother's.
I suppose that they age, maybe slower. A trick is that their DNA doesn`t shorten like most living creatures. That would mean that after reaching a peak, they just won`t olden
Could it be related to telomeres? Like maybe all honkai beasts have a limiter on their own growth and that element is passed onto the MANTIS? So when the MANTIS reaches their physical peak they just won't age.
I think it's just exactly that, she started puberty while being a mantis; She's the only example of this happening, everyone else was already full grown adults. Fu Hua was 17 so she likely didn't have much more growth to go, besides brain development, which is what I think the manga was referring to. It doesn't seem like a retcon because they never explicitly said Mantis don't age, I think it's much more akin to stopping/slowing the degradation through aging rather than stopping the aging completely.
Haha good to see you again Homu, hope you back pain is better oh and happy new year, well as you said, maybe they have a problem with characters aging up because they didnt pay atention or dont like these type of situations, but while I was playing I was specting someting like what happened as in some dialogs in ER some flamechasers even said that real Griseo should look like Blanca, and the only cases where a character stops aging are special cases like Theresa being a clone and Mantises with regenerative powers like Garuda, but thats me and Hoyoverse only used crumbles to explain it
Maybe the change is visible because she wasn't an adult at the time of Mantis surgery. Because others already reached their normal heights and all, we cannot observe much growth in Kevin, Su and Hua. And Mobius is the entirely different case with reducing in size upon damage instead.

Yeah, but keep in mind. She travels all around the universe moving faster than light travel which causes time dilation for example back on earth it’s been 50,000 years but on the spaceship it’s probably been a couple years or longer. Which is probably why she got older. That there could be other factors.
Maybe the honkai energy in honkai beasts in humans affects the cells in them, just like 1 billion years ago when Mars was destroyed from honkai and honkai survived until this era. It could be that when the honkai energy disappears then the world will be peaceful, just as in the body of MANTIS if the honkai energy disappears from their body then they will die

Griseo might be the Primordial one in Genshin impact(Teyvat) and left earth 50,000 years ago, and sent arks to different planets, creating clones of humans back on earth.
Which would include, Star Rail planets, and the rest of the universe like Yoyoverse games and it would explain why most of the characters look alike since most of them are Clones or their ancestors anyway. but this is speculation.

My theori is that mantises only develop. When we born, our body grow and devolop untill the age of 17-25, depends on the person, where you reach your peak, and then you star to undevelop and "age" due to acumulation of "flaws" in your genetic material that happen in the celular division and wounds and damage in parts of your body that dont regenerate.
My theori is that mantises have way less flaws at their genetic code. This can happen because:
1) their genetic division is slower than normal humans. In normal humans the genetic code cant repair itself because the cells divide way faster, but in some insects, for exemple, where the genetic code divide slower, they repair way more before division.
2) their genetic code doesnt suffer flaws at the division due to the honkai genes having better mitosis process.
And the other point is that mantises are capable to regenerate parts that normaly dont, like tendons.
With this, whenthey reach their "peak" they will not "grow old" and "frail", they will just stay there.
Fu Hua would be an exeption, since she hadnt reached her peak, but this can be just Garuda. What do you think?

I theorize that the sleeping pods don't just allow a being to sleep inside and preserve their physical condition, but it may also be programmed to enhance their physical state toward its ideal -- electrical stimuli for muscular growth, and an ideal mixture of nutrients for other physical growth and maintenance where needed.
Griseo is a special case among the MANTISes because she got her surgery as a measure to save her life (therefore the Honkai Beast genes that Mobius gave her might have been directed toward longevity or preservation), but more importantly in this case, she was not physically at full maturity when she went into sleep. If one of the things the ARK pods was designed to do was to train and prepare any MANTISes aboard for possible battle against the Honkai, and particularly against Herrschers, then it seems reasonable to me that it would also be programmed to bring the MANTISes into their ideal condition.
Griseo would, one would assume, be a more capable warrior as an adult than as a child, so on top of simulated training, the pod might stimulate physical changes a bit at a time until Griseo had an adult body, so she could be stronger and faster while fighting. But with a MANTIS at full physical maturity, it would be focused on preserving the peak physical condition possible -- so someone like Kevin or Su wouldn't age while sleeping.
One thing I keep on returning to is the theory that Teyvat in _Genshin_ is another reality's Project ARK, with a focus on training warriors to fight Herrschers, just like the example above -- except instead of Stigmata, the warriors of Teyvat use Visions and other similar means. Note that there is a mechanic for Ascending your account, characters, and the world, and when you do, rewards improve, but the monsters also become higher level. The test to do this is guarded by Aleph, an elemental being that can only be defeated using elemental power. This is likely to ensure no ordinary person makes the world more dangerous than they can handle. Of course, we won't know more about this until Mihoyo reveals it, and the whole thing with the Descenders, particularly with Celestia not being native to Teyvat (instead of being its administrators) more than 'kind of' demolishes this whole theory. But I still think it's a fun one to work with.
I did think a crossover event in the Hoyoverse games to confront the Herrscher of the End would have been cool. This sort of thing is still possible within the framework of _HSR_ against Nanook, but with _HI3_ Part 1 over, it seems unlikely to happen in _HI3_ . But then, _GGZ_ has pitted its heroes against incredible odds, and they had no help from across the Honkaiverse.

I suspect that Mantis grow to full maturity (25ish) then stop aging/slow down aging dramatically. If I had to explain why maybe the Honkai genes let them grow into a "peak" state for the purpose of wielding Honkai energy better. Fu Hua is more unique in this regard due to her specific Honkai beast locking her into her teenage years, hence the Swara. Mobius being the other example you pointed out as she can die, regressing her age, then grow back up.
I think the main reason people believed mantis did not age was due to the obvious fact that the ONLY MANTIS WE KNEW FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE GAME BEFORE ELYSIAN REALM CHANGED SO MUCH LORE WERE, KEVIN, SU, AND FU HUA WHO ALL DID NOT AGE. So I don't blame people for following the train of thought that Griseo growing up is a weird thing that wasn't properly explained even with the ONLY hint that they did was Mobius aging up after regressing her age by having Kalpas kill her a few times (which was mentioned so fast it's easy for people to forget that was even mentioned and felt like a throw away line not proof they can age).
so it's hard for people who followed the game for a few years already to just forget all the assumed knowledge we had about Mantis and the flamechasers with the 'hidden' reveal that they do age.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been desperately trying to spread the word that Hoyo have never explicitly stated that MANTIS cannot age within the game or other outside sources, despite the fact that people seem to believe the narrative as such. Like you said, there is the *possibility* that they might not age, but I personally believe that there's more evidence to suggest that they do, in the case with someone like Mobius & now Griseo.
It makes more sense to me that MANTIS just age a lot slower & the reason that Kevin & Su haven't had any physical changes is because they were already relatively mature when they became MANTISes. I'd argue that there's not much physical difference between 25-30 year old's, aside from maybe getting a few wrinkles.
I firmly believe that, because Griseo was so young when she became a MANTIS, her body still had plenty of room to grow PHYSICALLY. I don't think that Hoyoverse would create such a large plothole, especially when they seem to be so adamant on keeping everything within a certain structure in regards to the story. Obviously things are lost in translation, but this genuinely doesn't seem like something that fell victim to that, rather they just didn't convey that MANTIS can age well enough (or perhaps it's just the fandom mentality that, once a narrative is spread, people run a mile with it.)

I think why gríseo’s physical appearance changed was since she turned into a MANTIS at the age of 12 implying she would have started to go through puberty or have already hit meaning her body was still developing/maturing while turning into a MANTIS, and this also kind of explains why the other MANTISES’ physical appearance don’t change

14:35 is wrong from that one unfortunate conversation in er where they joke abt kosma liking girls under 9 we can assume griseo is >9. So even if she grew ~5 years she would’ve been somewhere around 14 and definitely not an adult.
Griseo says under 10 and then corrects herself to under 12.
About the finality of the moon arc there is a moment were Fu Hua reveal that she trained with hers powers during almost 5000 years but Kevin did train during almost 50000 years implying that Kevin woke up rigth after their finality event with Su and with the help of Gray Snake and Klein preparing the launch of all project...

Anyway the fact that we forgot that Theresa possed both Vishnu and Kevin's genes can make you wonder how much of a Icy Queen she can really become... and I will not talk about Kiana's case.

Depend on how we use "age" here do we meant "age" as in "anti-aging treatment" or just don't age in general
For my part, I have merely a vague assumption that Griseo has been aged well without being outdated.
For illustration, I use Nahida and Paimon in their "shrunk" body shape from Genshin Impact as an example - the two sacrificed their powers to avert a looming disaster. However, this sacrifice took its toll and as a result, we can clearly see Nahida and Paimon as we know them.
In Griseo's case, I have the theory that she could be a reverse process - she got strength or mantis power and accordingly a growth boost for her body.

I can speculate she woke up multiple times during some events but most of times she was in cryogen sleep or something with entire body freeze. At least i can believe in it.
Kevin is an oddity among MANTIS because he actually allowed Mobius to perform further enhancements on him. I think Su's Honkai beast is also similar to Fu Hua because it has either a crane or a peacock. Kevin's enhancements made him the epitome of a what a MANTIS and maybe his aging is 'frozen' because of his Honkai Beast.
Griseo is different because she was only turned to a Mantis by Mobius to save her life. We don't know if Mobius performed further enhancements but I am more inclined to believe not because of how everyone is fiercely protective of her and adored her. Wouldn't the people from Phosphorus being from Earth/Ark contradict Sa's goal to resurrect the Venusians tho? Seems kinda weird.
I guess she may have added in Venusian DNA to that of the ARK, which would make Phosphorus people Human/Venusian hybrids?
Sa already did resurect old Venusian people in the past and the result is Venusian's Heart full of malice so Sa Destroy them and replaced them without soul of Venusian
"Project: Ark was dedicated to the search of other habitable planets in the universe" and yet they sent out a single lone child that had no clue how to maintain or repair said Ark (and had lived her life under constant watch and care from other people, never by herself) only for it to never even leave the vicinity of the solar system, come back to Earth after thousands of years (at a time where they were already rebuilding and civilization began to sprout anew) and then they send her out alone AGAIN where she proceeds to crash unto some unknown planetoid still very close from the Earth in galactic standards (and unwittingly spends the "load" of humanity on said planetoid just so the new wannabe Cocoon can play samsara again)...
I still don't know which one of the MOTH Projects were the worst thought out but this one is up there.

@@Luguya The ARK's designers (lead by Vill-V IIRC) made the ship so that it could be repaired by whoever was on it. Griseo spent parts of her journey learning to be an engineer and is quite skilled at it by this point. The purpose of the ARK was to search for other habitable planets in the universe but due to limitations at the time it ended up being mostly just a backup that could return after Finality came, the second journey out was entirely voluntary and was literally her decision. Not to mention it's not like they could account for another entity out on the edge of the solar system laying a trap for her in order to gain access to the ARK.
Also, you say, "they sent out a lone child," like she didn't volunteer for it, and it's not exactly like they had a lot of options for others who could oversee the project.
@@InheritorHD Well of course she could teach herself "engineering" after the fact, considering just how much free time she had for it but you know what would've been more useful? Just send a digitized Vill-V segment. We know they had those. Or anyone else with that background as backup. Putting aside the horrendous prospect of sending out someone to live for thousands of years alone, whether willing or not, my point is that it was a bad plan. And I think the results of Project: Ark support this conclusion.
@@Luguya Considering Vill-V got Pardo to do voice recordings for some of her lessons, I think Griseo just learned through recorded lessons.
As for it being a bad plan, they were desperate and the plan worked in keeping a backup off world. Only downside is that it ended up not being necessary, and honestly it's job of finding another habitable world literally worked. Also, just to reiterate because I guess you missed what I said, accounting for a hostile entity laying a trap for her at the edge of the solar system is not really a reasonable thing to consider for this, so I don't see how the results support that conclusion.

I have a very simple logical biological explanation.
Mantis not aging. Right? But what is aging? Aging, when your cells die faster than they reproduce.
Children body cells grow far more large numbers compaired to their deaths, so a human body can fully develop. This process turn when people became young adults ready to reproduction. After that start the real "aging".
Now all Mantis are young adults basicly, in the biological age when they ready to reproduction. Exept Griseo.
If you think about it, it's logical, that while Mantis state stop aging by make enough cell to balance the cell growth and death, in Griseo case, she not biologically developed to reproduction so she not reached young adults, that mean, her body not aging naturally, when she reach the young adult state, she stop like Hua.
And as we know, she were deep freezed most of the time, so when she returned, she still not grown much.
The Fu Hua can't age alone is also not realy confirmed. Well, Kevin didn't aged, Su didn't aged, the rest of the Mantis died before we could know their aging. And Mobius aged backward.😅
The points when Kevin and Hua talk about Griseo growth didn't realy prove anything about the other Mantis, as we know that Griseo the exeption who provenly grown. So it can easly explained in my theory too.
Think about it, a Mantis designed to fight Honkai, a young adult is the most fit to combat. So stopping aging is extend it's combat power. Meanwhile if a child or heck, an infant became Mantis, it's body need to grow into a biological age where it's more fit to fight. It make sense. It also advantage, if they can reproduce in case to extend their genes for the future (Kaslana bloodline I know Dr Mei cheated there, but she can't cheat for every Mantis) so a child who not ready for that is a disadvantage there too. But if the child grown into a young adult, problem solved.
People seemed to forget that Kevin and Fu hua aged as well.
Kevin was younger as he was depicted on one of Elysia's memories(His youngest self). When we saw him in chapter where he escapes sea of quantum, his age do show even in his voice.
Fu hua did age a lot. She was a teenager when she was mantis. Now she is mostly adult. People underastimate how much woman can change between her teenage and adult life. Though some mostly stay same which is a case for Fu hua because she only got taller.
Now everybody should admit that "Griseo aged" conversation is totally based around her assets. You know what I mean. Maybe when she becomes even older, she will look like Aponia considering how much "growth" she shows.
Fu hua is still physically a teenager

Almost as if people still haven't learned Hoyo likes to give their characters massive racks for absolutely no reason (or even despite reason) besides the obvious *cough*horni*cough*.

They don't age either. They still lived for a long time up until their death at the hands of Chiyou. And they literally have snake bits along their arms which is hidden under their long sleeves.
So they're clearly not "normal humans", but the game constantly tries to drill in the point that they are MANTIS either. So what on Earth are they?

I just think HoYoverse screwed up. Like how they failed to properly convey how MANTIS powers work, they failed to convey what exactly Fuxi and Nuwa are. They gave their lives to stop Chiyou. That's not something an ordinary human could have done.

I still think that mohoyo retconned it bc it was an inconvenient rule, they wanted to show griseo's growth but without body changes can be delusional, or they will want to show us new characters with honkai beasts genes or similar life forms in the future so they discarded that rule making griseo (and luna) aging.
After all its not the first time that mihoyo retconned something, one is the story of prime kiana told in the web event during kolosten arc, the story differ from the manga
