Have you ever tried to write a song about your life, then heard exactly what you were trying to say in a song on the radio? Only better than you could ever do? Me... with this song.
One of the coolest yet boring videos I've ever watched. I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching a guy sing changing hats at the same time. Awesome video props for the creativity
Dang. I think the meaning behind this song is so sneaky. This is how I interpreted it: He starts by saying, "Back when we started, before we parted, I would wonder what would make her stay." So obviously he's saying he felt that his lover was so beyond him. Like she had been put on a pedestal and could never do wrong. Then he follows up by saying, "What was I thinking?" Meaning he now disagrees with his past self and could probably suggest a bunch of reasons she would stay with him (basically, he no longer has her up on that pedestal). Next, he says, "As if my drinking was the only thing that drove her away." He's suggesting that it wasn't just his faults that ended the relationship. "Was it ambition or war of attrition?" This line is asking if it was his own hubris that led to the end of the relationship, or were they really just outlasting each other's flaws? "Honey you could always take it out" suggests that she became pretty nasty whilst criticizing him. "Now I know beyond a shadow of a doubt it's my fault" is the tricky line. He's being facetious, or to be more blunt, speaking sarcastically. He knows the whole relationship isn't his fault, and he's mocking both the girl and the idea that the relationship ending was all his fault. "Caught me thinking what it might be like, to be alone for a while, or alone for just one night." This is another sneaky line. He's once again being facetious, saying that he's reeeeeeaaally totally definiiiitely considering what it will be like to be alone for a while because he's soooooo distraught that he lost this girl by being suuuuch a fool. At the end of the chorus he says "or alone ust one night," suggesting that he'll be back in the dating game or what have you by morning and that the feeling of losing this crazy girl is but a good night's sleep away from disappearing. The rest of the song basically reiterates what I've stated already. "I'd share my feelings, you'd hit the ceiling. Couldn't shake it if I tried." He can't help but notice her flaws when she would harshly criticize his own (especially when he was being honest with her). "You were my lover, only to discover something inside of me had died." This line is saying in, once again, a not-in-front-of-your-face fashion that she likes him until she realized that he didn't match her needs, which she then saw as his fault. The imagery of the video also shows that what I'm saying could be true. The various hats, in the obvious sense, are thinking caps and multiple perspectives he is taking. But some of them, like the boob inspector hat or the magicians hat, are mocking of his ex lover. Maybe she was just a good rack to him and nothing else and that that's okay because she was awful to him. Maybe the things she said to him are just one big magic trick. Anyways, that's how I read it. Let me know if you have anything to add!
Back when we started Before we parted I would wonder what would make her stay You were left thinking As if my drinking was the only thing that drove her away Was it ambition? or war of attrition? Honey, you could always take it out? Now i know beyond the shadow of a doubt, its my fault. Got me thinking, what it might be like to be alone for a while, Or alone for just one night. I share my feelings You'd hit the ceiling I couldn't shake it if i tried You were my lover Only to discover, something inside of me had died Was it ambition? or war of attrition? Honey, you could always take it out? Now i know beyond the shadow of a doubt, its my fault. Got me thinking, what it might be like to be alone for a while, Or alone for just one night.
Heard this first time last Saturday when he opened for the Lumineers, but there was a girl with a high-pitched voice singing with him, and now it feels 'off' without her xD Is there a version that includes her? Or will that one just need to be left in my memory?
Heard it on Gaston College's WSGE yesterday and researched it to see who was singing. Funny thing is it was about this time of the year I heard Mark Foster's Foster the People on the same station AND on Sirius Pulse just before they came out of nowhere. And they're freakin on the Grammys this year? WTF? So I think this could be this year's Foster the People if there are enough marketing skills and willing college dj's out there.
Seen you play in Toronto as Jacks Special Guest, and I couldnt have been happier it was you! Thank you for sharing your brilliant talent with the world and ME!!! Love u!!
Boy look here , I ain know if you been by my house an thief my hats out my closet , but dey look better on you doe. Love the song man , you gatta get 98.7 to play it. That's the only station I listen to . Hey , what island you from anyhow? You look like you from Spanish wells

The song is more important, by far, than the video. And the song is badass.

Mr. Roosterr oh shit wait..
Back when we started
Before we parted
I would wonder what would make her stay
You were left thinking
As if my drinking was the only thing that drove her away
Was it ambition? or war of attrition?
Honey, you could always take it out?
Now i know beyond the shadow of a doubt, its my fault.
Got me thinking, what it might be like to be alone for a while,
Or alone for just one night.
I share my feelings
You'd hit the ceiling
I couldn't shake it if i tried
You were my lover
Only to discover, something inside of me had died
Was it ambition? or war of attrition?
Honey, you could always take it out?
Now i know beyond the shadow of a doubt, its my fault.
Got me thinking, what it might be like to be alone for a while,
Or alone for just one night.

Heard this first time last Saturday when he opened for the Lumineers, but there was a girl with a high-pitched voice singing with him, and now it feels 'off' without her xD
Is there a version that includes her? Or will that one just need to be left in my memory?
Alexander Rowley There's a live version where he brings two ladies to do the melody vocally.
Heard it on Gaston College's WSGE yesterday and researched it to see who was singing.
