    It's not the impurities in the tank that interferes with the ODS causing unit failure, it's the oils in the hose that are leaching out under the high pressure from the bulk tank. 1lb. propane bottles use no hose hence no need for the filter. You notice the lack of threads for a filter on the quick connect fitting on the Big Buddy due to the fact propane coming in from the RV propane source is already regulated to low pressue which eliminates the oils from leaching from the hose.

    I use my Big Buddy inside my house. I have the regulator simply due to indoor usage. This was my first year using this heater. I have a 20lb tank. Just today the heater was acting up. I cleaned the heater with a qtip and alcohol. It didn’t fix the issue. Then I was instructed to bled the remaining gas by lifting the pilot and letting the flame die. Then turn on the tank just a little bit. Let the pilot light burn for approx 20 seconds. Turn the heater on low and slowly open the tank valve. It worked like a charm! Your video was informative. Thank you.

    Never connect the small tank to the filter first or you will expel the gas from the tank into the air. Always attach the filter to the heater and then attach the tank to the filter.

      I specifically bought that damn hose so that i wouldn't have to have a filter hanging off my unit. I just spent an hour taking apart my heater and draining about 2 teaspoons of oil from my heaters pilot light line and main fuel line. (This took about 4 20lb tanks and a year to happen). Odd? Either way i just bought a filter.

      @@patricklee780 no not at all, just sharing my experience. I didn't want the wart of a filter hanging off the heater, along with extra fittings to leak so i bought that hose from the same store i got my heater from (tractor supply). All was good year one, i used about 6 20lb cylinders (max), but this year i had oil in the tubing after my 2nd 20lb cylinder, it showed itself by a shrinking pilot light that eventually quit and kept stopping the heater. No problems since i took the heater apart and flushed the oil out. Not saying the hose is bullshit, but if someone reads this and totally depends upon their heater for survival they might want the filter anyways to be safe, or safer... I still don't know where the oil comes from as i hung the hose up from the rafters of my garage and after a day hanging vertical i got no oil out of the end of it, not even a smear (yes i poked the schrader valve). People can take it for what it's worth.... I was just extremely surprised by the oil.

    Just a heads up I very strongly recommend the higher price braided hose from Amazon, I had bought the average plastic hose shown in video. I camp on weekends. One night after about six months. I hooked everything up. Started it about a half hour before bed. Outside the tent my wife said I smell propane.. Check the connections. All good. Ahh. Fired it up.. A little while later she went to get something outside the tent and said. I smell gas again. Well that was enough for me I shut it down and got out the deer spotter light and did a thorough inspection of the hose.. About 2 ft from the tank end I found a half inch slit in the hose. Luckily it was before the hose entered the tent.. Just throwing it out there.. I also give nothing but TLC to my hose, no extreme conditions or abuse.

    Great maintenance tip! Even if you use the approved hose and / or a fuel filter, the thiols (A.K.A. scent or stench) that is added to propane, is a very light oil-like substance that is slightly heavier than propane (that's why the smell is stronger when the bottle is close to empty). Over time, it builds up in low spots within a fuel line or in this case, the pilot orifice.

    You may have said this and I missed it, but you can reduce the amount of oil contaminants leeching from the hose by taking pressure off the hose when not in use. Don't keep your hose attached all day with pressure from the tank pushing to the heater. The pressure is what squeezes the oils out of the hose so you can save a lot of contamination this way.

    I use one of those filters and it still constantly clogs. Maybe the filter helps as a separator, but I’ve found the best way to clear oil in the heater is to hold it sideways and upside down a bit to help drain and force the oil out. It will spit flaming oil if you keep it lit, and eventually clear enough to keep using.

    After reading though the whole comments section, I see that the oil plugging situation is caused by BOTH line leaching and oily propane in both the big and small tanks to a lesser degree so the “filter” is needed to prevent some minor oil problems. If you get a batch of majorly contaminated propane you may have to gang up 2 or so filters on your auxiliary line to a bigger tank if it rapidly fills one up. These “filters” according to a couple of curious guys that cut them apart are mostly just empty except maybe for an inline screen and are seemingly just an in-line low pressure collection spot . Changing out the filter yearly may be helpful in many cases but reverse flushing with a can of brake solvent and blowing it out with air may work just as well given the nature of the “collection can”, however nobody has tried it yet, just my thought. You will find other vids on taking the pilot line apart to clean out oil that has settled in the crooks and low spots in the line. The swab stick idea to clean out the post jet orifice is probably helpful to keep that free of buildup and bugs, an excellent idea would be after using the heater to poke a bit of Kleenex or cotton into the post pilot shield to prevent bugs which really love this size of a hole . No doubt the pilot jet has an adequate screen protecting it at least I would hope so which seems like a good place to have oil stop the flow as well as that tiny little line getting oil filled. Another suggestion called for back flushing from the flame side of the jet with brake cleaner or WD 40 and the pressurized air AFTER you take the main line apart to flush it. This would allow the teensy little pilot line to be back flushed too. One guy said he had to replace several thermocouples before giving up but I’m thinking that may have been because the pilot was stifled from oil or other partial stoppage. If after line cleaning the pilot is still paltry either the internal regulator is lazy or the micro hole in the pilot jet is a bit obstructed. If after flushing and still no joy, this may mean you are stewed and have to replace the jet/line assy . NOTE: When I watched Dr Joe’s vid (Shows how to disassemble and fix oily line Clog "Mr. Buddy" Heater: Failure to Fire !!!
    th-cam.com/video/lpVnaIUk4NA/w-d-xo.html ) after getting to the line he put it all back together including the outer shell (the hard part) before test lighting . I would test light it first after replacing the lines in case you need to make another try at it. Blessings!

    Is it bad to shake the tank before connecting?

  • @rebeccaspookyduran7864

    I've been dealing with this for years 3 years now three years I could have been watching this video. I have bought and returned so many of these dang buddy heaters. The little green tanks work fine. But whenever I hook the hose up to a bigger tank I get nothing but problems. And we need this heater with winter coming up. We have made camping out lifestyle. Thank God Florida winters are mild and short but still it gets cold especially at night.
    So I went bought a brand new heater and brand new hose and tank and it worked fine for a couple hours. Now it's doing that where the pilot works fine but as soon as turn the knob on it starts acting up. Barely putting out any heat . I know it has to be the hose because the small Coleman tanks work fine. So many years of dealing with this. So many times my husband taking the heater apart to completely clean the hoses. So many night of shoving alcohol q-tips in the pilot hole for it to work a minute and then do the same thing and all I needed was a dang filter? Smh. So simple. Thank you! Why is it no other channel has mentioned this solution?

  • @TRu44-560
    @TRu44-560 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just buy the propane regulator because the issue is in the hoses not the propane. 20 lb propane tank in particular have a higher psi or (pressure flow rate) that can cause damage to your heater. With a propane tank regulator you wont have that problem anymore hence you dont have to constantly buy propane filters that are only recommended for 1 season use only.

  • @REVNUMANEWBERN

    SO, if you are using ONLY the green disposable tanks you DON'T have to use the filter? Will the heater operate IF you screw the filter into it & then the small green bottle ? Because the bottle with filter attached would have to set at a angle

  • @fishlovme

    FYI, right from the manufacturer their 10 foot hose does NOT require the fuel filter. All other hoses from Mr. Heater do require the fuel filter. I emailed them asking what was needed for my mr buddy heater and they listed every hose they manufacture and sell. Only the 10 foot hose doesn't require a fuel filter. So if you're running any other hose get a fuel filter immediately cause you might be fine for a long time, but eventually your unit will fail!

    • @joebidendidthat5121

      You need the non filter hose F273704 to hook up to the 20lb tank. NO filter required. Hard to find, was out of stock every where all summer! Just back in stock at Ace on-line order only and mega expensive with shipping. Got mine from eBay with shipping included for $15 less!

    • @robertscott5566
      @robertscott5566 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think all units eventually will fail and need cleaned this might just be a sales gimmick for you to buy the hose from them! Sometimes you have to think out of the box ! I personally believe the oil is coming from the 20 lb tanks you are buying when you trade your tank in! They put oil in those tanks to keep them from rusting out! If you keep using the same tank you own and just get it refilled down the road you won't get the oil in those tanks! I have had great luck doing this! I use a hose that is not a little buddy hose and I have no failure yet! If it does fail I will just clean it what is the big deal eventually everything gets build up on it doesn't it?

  • @dougcutler4948
    @dougcutler4948 ปีที่แล้ว

    From what I've read and heard, there is no need for the filter unless you are using a flexible hose with a larger tank. The filter would only make it so a small tank wouldn't fit into the designated space on the heater.

  • @fordssuck
    @fordssuck ปีที่แล้ว

    So is the filter also a pressure regulator? Or should you have a regulator on the big tank anyway?

    Also wanted to let you guys know I don't know if I'm correct on this but this is what I researched a couple years ago for my little buddy heater they told me that always gets your propane filled don't buy those tanks at Walmart or dollar store that are already prefilled because they actually add oil to those tanks to keep them from rusting out and that could keep your little buddy not in such good shape don't know if that's true or not but that's what I researched so I just feel my tanks down the road and I haven't had any problem yet for the last couple years with mine and I do use the hose I don't think the hose is really that big of an issue I think it's more the oil in those propane tanks

  • @cacobarruvias5247
    @cacobarruvias5247 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My understanding the filters actually remove oils released from the hoses that aren't made to run under high pressure. Mr Heater now makes a high pressure hose and they don't require filters.

    If you're putting the gadget onto the small propane, it's not going to slide back in place. Should it just be left hanging out? • @joshuaulring8718

    I have the same buddy heater that you show in the video, I run it on an extension hose and I have used a filter. The problem is that the lines inside the buddy heater get filled with oil from the propane, and using a filter doesn't stop this from happening. I have to take my buddy heater a part at least once a year and clean out all of the lines and it works like new again.

    • @TrailReady4Runner
      @TrailReady4Runner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think so just because the regulator regulates pressure that’s coming out of the tank and into the hose the issue is the hose itself has oil‘s when the gas is pushed in and picks up those oil‘s and it pushes them into the heater so the filter sits In between the hose and the heater. I hope that makes sense lol
