Basically everyone who was alive in Germany at the time of release of this album knows or has heard every song from it, kids, adults, elders alike. It was a real cultural phenomenon.
And not just this Song, the whole album is a masterpiece of German Hip hop culture. you should check out "alles neu" or "stadaffe", the name of the song and Album
That's a bit optimistic.
Perhaps in Berlin?
@@matyy6673nah literally all around germany
Its true for the song but not for the album.
I'm not from Berlin, but everybody here I know, knows at least multiple songs from the album. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sure, "everyone" is hyperbolic, but that should be obvious.
"Schnapsleiche" (or schnaps corpse) is a real life idiom in German, that's someone who has drunk themselves into oblivion/ unconsciousness, they're so drunken, they don't respond/ react to anything.
Booze Corps
Englishspeakers would say "blackout drunk"
Or drunkards
Schnaps corpse - ich geh kaputt xD Denglish rockt?!
@@A-C-Andy too be fair i think in some parts of the USA Schnapps is acctualy a loanword and used

The lyrics / aka subtitles are atrocious…better to get the real German lyrics translated, the yt automated translation clearly is incable of translating German lingo in rap
They should have used DEEPL and not the completely incapable Google Translator... 🙄

Hey mate, with "die fantastischen vier" it all startet in german hiphop,
previously we had just american rap. Take a look, peace
@@letsbuildfallout4639 have you never heard of advanced chemistry or the stieber twins?
I'm a teacher from germany an we analyze this track in the 10th grade in literatur-studies. It's a masterpiece of art!
In its entirety, the work can be interpreted as a “big city anthem”, which, through its antithetical perspective, transfigures urban space as a juggernaut and place of social injustice, but also as a familiar environment and “elixir of life”.
In terms of content, the song describes the path of a lyrical self who walks through the city of Berlin early in the morning - exhausted from partying - and describes and processes his sensory perceptions. The socially depressing atmosphere dictated by the text is accompanied on the one hand by driving, dancehall-like party bass, while the string and wind instruments musically create a tense, diffuse background image. The fact that the crucial interval for the listener is not played in the ES major (verses) or F major (hookline) composition creates an irritating intermediate level when listening, which means that the song does not clearly sound in minor or major lets. A happy or sad mood cannot be explicitly identified through the music. The song itself allows for both perspectives.
If you analyze the text, the verses concentrate on the sensory perceptions of the lyrical self, while the hook reflects what has been observed. The first two verses primarily process the social circumstances and grievances in Berlin in the perception of the lyrical self: dirt, excess, violence and cold are lyrically interwoven with social fringe groups of all kinds and experienced by the lyrical self as reserved or at a distance (v 1-17). In the following hookline, however, the city that has just been described in all its ugliness is addressed as a familiar counterpart ("Good morning Berlin, you...", v. 18), which appears "dirty and gray" (v. 19), but at the same time - almost belittling - is defined as “beautifully terrible” (v.20).
The lyrical speaker's conclusion from this circumstance is to give in to the symptoms of fatigue (v.23) and to pass the night with all its dirt, metaphorically marked by the color black (v.25), with the beginning of the day, here with the symbolic color of Purity (blue) drawn (V.25), to be perceived.
The third verse then describes the sensory impressions of the lyrical ego in relation to the anonymity, alienation and isolation of the individual in the big city. Only a bakery (stanza 4), which contrastingly marks the boundary between inside and outside, offers the opportunity to escape cold reality in order to indulge in dreams (v.36).
In this protected atmosphere, the big city “doesn’t seem as hard as you think” (v. 41). The C part of the hook can be interpreted as the lyrical speaker's personal summary. The alienating sensory impressions of the big city in the morning are subjected to a final reflection, with the vital necessity of the urban space forming the final conclusion (v. 55f). At this point the contradictory perspectives culminate and, despite all the dislike, make the song a “declaration of love” to the hometown.
On the phonetic level, in addition to the metrolect, the frequently occurring alliterations (e.g. "Stapf durch die Kotze am Kotti"“ (Vomit on the Kotti) (v. 6) and other equivalence structures (e.g. “seh sich satt fressen'... "eat your fill”) should be particularly highlighted, which correspond to the harshness of the text content. Antithetical Comparisons (e.g. “You can be so beautifull terrible” V.20) and almost loving personifications (e.g. “Good morning Berlin, you…” V.18) in turn break this characteristic and thus fit into the overall picture of an antagonistic perception of the big city a.

Being born in Berlin 41 years ago. Going out in Berlin for over 25 years now and this Song is the perfect description of leaving a club in the morning and heading home. Love it.
Schnaps corpses (Schnapsleichen) does not literally mean people who have died from alcohol over-consumption, but it refers to people passed out from too much alcohol… It is a hyperbolic expression if you want.
Great reaction. To give you some context:
The album ‘Stadtaffe‘, on which this song is featured, is one of the most successful German-language albums of all time.
Peter Fox had originally planned to produce it for another artist during the break that Seeed took from the end of 2007. However, his favourite partner CeeLo Green, who had already worked on the Seeed single Aufstehn! in 2005, was no longer available due to the unexpected success of Gnarls Barkley. Other singers did not satisfy Fox, so he recorded his own album ‘out of necessity’.
To produce the album, he worked with the 40-piece Babelsberg Film Orchestra. Throughout the album you can hear the genuine use of classical instruments.
After the huge success, he continued to release music with Seeed. His solo career seemed to be over after a single album. Until a second album was suddenly released last year. ‘Love Songs’ also landed at No. 1 in the charts again. The best-known new song is ‘Zukunft pink’.
Rap over an Orchestra is just perfection
Stadtaffe is just an exceptionally epic Album.
Not to mention 'Coldsteel' is a crime.
Stadtaffe is actually the german Hip Hop album with the most sales ever. Only since the rise of Spotify there have been more succesfull albums. But u simply cant compare that.
Cool to learn about the Babelsberg Orchestra being the partner involved. Love little facts like that
The whole album was just like one long poem, loved it so much back then and today
"Kotti" is short for "Kottbusser Tor" (Cottbus Gate), an infamous drugs and crime hotspot surrounding the U-Bahn station of the same name in the Kreuzberg neighborhood of central Berlin.
And Kotze is vomit, kotzen to vomit, that's why we call that area Kotzy or Kotzie
One thing about Peter Fox that stands out for me is his pronunciation and choice of the words. To me it is like an additional instrument: „Frust kommt auf, denn der Bus kommt nicht“. Pure genious.
Yes, it's very satisfying. I think he plays with the sharp sounds of the German language as well and uses it like an instrument, like you said. It's like an extra beat somehow, difficult to explain. I wonder if this translates for people who don't speak German.
Frust kommt auf, den der Bus kommt nicht. That ist always in my mind when i try to take the bus in Berlin!
Fun fact- Peter Fox actually had a speech impediment (stuttering) the way he mastered that and how he raps today was a long hard journey and he started with rapping to improve his articulation
So glad you pointed this out. Many US American rappers are quite hard to understand. Meanwhile Peter Fox is clear as day and easy to understand. Love the interpretation that he uses his voice as an instrument
If you like this one, you defintely should react to 'ALLES NEU' and to 'HAUS AM SEE' . The album 'STADTAFFE' from Peter Fox is a true masterpiece of modern german music and poetry. Greetings.
yeah....Haus am See is a beautiful song...no better song when sitting in the night at a fire and having a drink.
I remember an interview with Peter Fox where he claimed, because he considers his voice as not so beautiful. And therefore he puts much more effort in the lyrics. He really is a poet in his songs
Basicly its THE „after the club on my way home“ anthem. And while he is on his way the sky turns from black to blue.
That's what I meant!
I always thought of it of being like a bruise. A mark of an accident, that you maybe got having fun, that eventually heals. Turning black and then later blue, and lastly lightening back up until the next bruise
"Strassenfeger" was a Street Newspaper usually sold by poor/homeless people for a little cash in the pedestrian zone. It debuted in October 1995 and got discontinued in June 2018.

I love Rappers making a Point without any Insults at all.
German Rap in the 90´s was all about poetic Stuff, almost like real classic poets, just with a Beat.
Peter Fox best Song is "Aufstehn". Pure Jamaika Vibes in Berlin.
As a german, my heart is melting, watching you exploring the deeper meaning of the song. Reading the lyrics definetely brings a level of deepness to your reactions!
Also reacting to the top most comments of native speakers giving context would add to that.
Yep can only agree to both points. Lovely to see this video but also worth giving props to commenters, especially given the requests during the video on help understanding things better
I don’t know a single person who doesn’t appreciate Peter Fox, even if they don’t usually listen to hiphop or rap. My boyfriend started learning German with his song Haus am See, he’s so into it haha
youre better off not reading the auto generated false lyrics and enjoy the video first and read the lyrics after. just like you used to haha. thanks for the reaction though, I actually never watched the music video. edit: 3:30 good job :D
As a fellow German, 1:00 "Is this Munich?" feels like rage-baiting :D Great reaction, glad Peter Fox is getting some more international recognition

Every bigger city has its own. In Hamburg it used to be Hinz und Kunzt. Is it still sold?
The song is about Berlin in the strange time between 3-4am.
There are the leftovers of yesterdays excess, the last remnants of clicks and the unsociable people going to an early shift.
All in all the worst hours to be out, but he still loves / needs Berlin.
You definitely not from Berlin
Fun fact: Peter Fox entered this song in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2009. In this competition, an artist from each federal state enters a song. This song was actually the entry for Berlin. And it won by a landslide.
Wow! I had no idea each state submits an entry. Based on recent competitions, like what Finland has been submitting, I could see many Peter Fox songs doing well
@@timoyates it was an extra contest. I think the Intention was that the winner enters the eurovision song contest.
I really, really appreciate you pausing and rewinding and especially looking up the lyrics! Thanks for your dedication, love your personality and your vibe when you get into the beat
Best decision to focus on sound and video and reading lyrics afterwards. When lyrics are propper translated (not automated) it can make sense to read them in the first run of a new piece of music.
But not in this case.
Overall I think that's something i like on this chanel here, Dwayne, is that you focus on the appearance of music/video in the first step. You can listen to a song in a different way, without knowing/understanding the lyrics. I can't because german is my language. Therefore I can hear - through you - elements I diodn't recognize before.
Furthermore I like how you guess, what a song could be about, without knowing. That's always fun to watch!
That’s SO AMAZINGLY POSITIVE ABOUT HIS REACTION, ISN‘T IT?!
I mean, I understand what he‘s saying, so I could never distinguish between the effects the lyrics have on me and the music itself…or the beat, the pocket…lol
Experiencing Seed/Peter Fox through Dwayne‘s eyes/ears is such a wholesome experience…it makes me appreciate my ‚Party Songs‘ from back when way more…..🤍
Das ist eine Liebeserklärung an Berlin!ich bekomme jedesmal Gänsehaut.

Peter Fox = Berlin
Not even a big Fan of his but that song. As a Berliner it almost makes me homesick when it pops up in my playlist on vacation. Lyrics are so spot on for Berlin.
Peter Fox Alles Neu!!! Immediately!!!
I love Berlin, the dirty Berlin, the normal Berlin. I am a Berliner, spent 2.5 yrs in England.
Seed & Peter Fox actually are heavy influenced by Dancehall & Reggae. And yes, he's the ginger one
This is an honest ode to Berlin. As a guy born and raised in Berlin and living here all my life since 49 years, this is my personal "national antheme". Even if it paints a supposedly bad image of Berlin, it is a pure declaration of love for this city.

Now you also have to react to „Dickes B“ from Seeed. Another Berlin related Song, but way more positive.
Dickes B is Berlin during the day, Schwarz zu Blau is Berlin at night. Fun fact, the instrumental version is called “Dreckiges B” (Also, what other rap album has an instrumental version that sold massively)
Alles Neu, Stadtaffe, Haus am See or Zukunft Pink would be great songs if you want to listen more of him. You will not be disappointed. He is really good in everything that he does 😊
Peter Fox is famous for his Beats and Lyrics man, you had it right in the first few seconds of the Song. Kudos.
TH-cam translation is horrible.

More than horrible!
"Alles Neu" from Peter is a must hear. And the lyrics are so deep. His Album "Stadtaffe" (City Ape) is a Masterpiece.
Absolute masterpiece. There's a great documentary about how he also produces and directs his own music videos
„From Black to Blue“ is simply one of the best songs about Berlin of all time! As a Berliner myself I can honestly tell you that seldom artists have been able to grab the spirit of this city more accurately than Peter Fox. Masterpiece.
And please Dwayne! Check out „Smudo schweift aus“! It’s from hip hop pioneers Die Fantastischen Vier, from 1993! It’s a deep cut of their early work and was featured on their quintessential album „Die vierte Dimension“ from 1993! Another very important track in german hiphop history is weck mich auf by samy deluxe. He rapped together with the beginners under his old alias dynamite deluxe. I've been wanting to recommend the song to you for a while, but now that you've read through the lyrics too, you definitely have to listen to it. I don't want to spoil too much now, you'll see why.

You should definitely watch a few of his songs as live versions. His concerts and stage shows are absolutely brilliant
I was so hoping to see him at Highfield this year but couldn't make it
You interpreted it on point. Cool that you like the song. Peter is a hell of a rapper that thinks like poet.
In my opinion this song is a love-hate song for Berlin.
Next song should be "Haus am See".
Indeed. Peter Fox does an amazing job depicting how it's both home and a place to leave
Peter Fox.. = Gänsehaut!
the song is his tribute to Berlin ... surely the most controversial city in Germany...
Thank you for reading the lyrics❤❤❤
Loved this reaction😊
I'm not into hip-hop or rap or anything, but Stadtaffe from Peter Fox is one of my most favorite albums ever. Heard it sooo many times. Brings joy to see, that you like it as well, even though you don't even understand the lyrics without translation and some back-ground knowledge. But when you say, it feels like London, I guess this could be true for other mayor cities like New York as well.
Love to watch your videos, always make me smile, or cry :)
Fantastic video! You did the right choice to focus on the music and video first and then look up a proper translation afterwards.
Hi there Dwayne
The way Peter Fox describes this part of Berlin is accurate. I lived there almost 30 years ago and it hasn't changed much I guess.
"Kotti" is a nickname for one of the biggest intersections in Kreuzberg, full name is "Kottbusser Tor". In the late 60's and throughout the70's this part of the town used to be the melting pot of hippies and other free spirits. With the migration of thousands of Turkish people coming to West-Berlin this part of Kreuzberg became a "ghetto", and the reason for this is twofold: #1 - Germans didn't want "foreigners" close to their homes (still wanting to benefit of their workforce, though). #2 - Most of the houses were in bad shape, so the apartments were cheap. They could afford a living and still would be able to send home money to support the family. Over time they had built a Turkish society with plenty of shops, cafes and places to meet. This part of Kreuzberg was called "Little Ankara".
But there was a negative side affect to it as well. In the mid-70's a lot of Arabic people moved there as well, and with them came more drugs than before. There were times when there was at least one dead body found on a daily basis. It took the authorities almost two decades to successfully fight organized crime. Not, that there isn't any longer, but not as much as it used to be.
After the Berlin Wall came down, lots of students flooded this area and stayed there after graduating. So nowadays this area transformed into a part of Kreuzberg that is chic, hip and not cheap any longer. But the "Kotti" remained the same. You can still find drug addicts, drunks and weird people there, just like Peter Fox describes it.
BTW, you should check out one of his biggest hits: "Haus am See" - to have a real Carribean feeling.
Regards from Germany
Rick
the whole record got recorded by an orchestra without any artificial effects and what not
Yeah! You found it! Isn‘t it just brilliant?!
Straßenfeger is a Magazine which homeless people sell on the streets, they get half of the money but have smp to eat. Thank you for listening, Fox is live amazing, check out his concerts ❤
I think every German between the age of 25-45 knows this song and its lyrics. It's iconic! 🙏🏼
Am I the only one who finds an English guy appreciating German culture so wholesome? 😉
Nah not at all. Plus Germans are good at appreciation UK and USA music so it's fitting
There was a little mistranslation at the end of the lyrics. It originally sais "die Sonne geht gerade auf" and while it's true that "gerade" can mean "straight" as in a "straight line", in this context it means "just" as in timing: "the sun is just coming up".
Thank you for reacting on german Pop/Rap music. In my opinion you nailed the interpretation of the lyrics.
Please check out "King of Rap" by Kool Savas. Nasty lyrics but superb flow! Cheers!
This song always gives me the best childhood vibes ❤ Edit: nice to see that you are actually interested in the content of the song, others stop immediately after the react but you really want to understand it, props to you and greetings from Hannover, Germany , home of 4 English kings

This song was one thing that inspired me to move to Berlin. It was a moment of epic catharsis when I saw Peter Fox perform this live in Berlin (with Seeed backing) a bunch of years ago. This song perfectly captures this city that I love and now call home.
Listen to the album! It's called "Stadtaffe" and it's a masterpiece!
This song is an ode to Berlin. You'x hear it when he sings Guten Morgen Berlin( good morning berlin).

I always said Peter is like the german Eminem, just as talented. Glad you saw it too 😊
There is a certain music scene on Germany called folk rock/metal. One of my favorites is „In extremo“. They have some amazing songs. Or „Feuerschwanz“ has some bangers as well (for example a cover of the seeed song you reacted to). Both of them using mostly traditional or even Selfmade instruments.
I'd like to mention folk/medieval rock band Subway to Sally in this context. Lots to discover there!
Yeah.. SEED.. Peter Fox.. The Album was a Wonder, best ever.

This is the best lyrical hommage to Berlin of new age we have I think. Very poetic, yes. Love and feel it, even I am from Frankfurt 😘❤ and yeah, fits for Frankfurt, as well. Thats why it is so good and so succesfull. We all can relate!
The whole album is an absolute masterpiece. Schwarz zu Blau, Alles Neu, Haus am See and Stadtaffe are stealing the spotlight, but the other ones with Kopf verloren, Der letzte Tag, Schüttel deinen Speck and Lok auf 2 Beinen are absolutely great.

"Haus am See" by Peter Fox is my favorite of his. In short, it describes a beautiful life. I am not saying more than that. Even though it was being played in the radio almost daily, it still was a happy few minutes every time.
You are doing a perfectly good job. Just on the way to enlarge his sight and vocabulary. On the perfect track. Keep it going 😊

Think Staßenfeger is a street newspaper, mosty sold by homeless ppl in berlin.
That's in Berlin. Capital of Germany. At the beginning he is talking about Kottbuser Tor. A scene or part of Berlin known for its high amount of drug dealers and junkies but also the part where all different kinds of people meet because its where you come through when you drive through the city with public transportation. Berlin as a whole is a complete different city at daytime than it is at nighttime. Thats true.

Peter Fox is a member of Seeed, who you've already seen in another video here, his album "Stadtaffe" is legendary! "Haus am See" is also a very beautiful piece of art imho
He sings how it is to be in Berlin out of the streets, after being in a club all night, and you walk the street, still seeing all the creeps out there before/until the sun start to rise... Black to blue is the song called, stand for the color of the sky
The lyrics still apply to Berlin today, even though the song is over 10 years old.
I love how you talk about his work.
