I'm a teacher from germany an we analyze this track in the 10th grade in literatur-studies. It's a masterpiece of art!
In its entirety, the work can be interpreted as a “big city anthem”, which, through its antithetical perspective, transfigures urban space as a juggernaut and place of social injustice, but also as a familiar environment and “elixir of life”.
In terms of content, the song describes the path of a lyrical self who walks through the city of Berlin early in the morning - exhausted from partying - and describes and processes his sensory perceptions. The socially depressing atmosphere dictated by the text is accompanied on the one hand by driving, dancehall-like party bass, while the string and wind instruments musically create a tense, diffuse background image. The fact that the crucial interval for the listener is not played in the ES major (verses) or F major (hookline) composition creates an irritating intermediate level when listening, which means that the song does not clearly sound in minor or major lets. A happy or sad mood cannot be explicitly identified through the music. The song itself allows for both perspectives.
If you analyze the text, the verses concentrate on the sensory perceptions of the lyrical self, while the hook reflects what has been observed. The first two verses primarily process the social circumstances and grievances in Berlin in the perception of the lyrical self: dirt, excess, violence and cold are lyrically interwoven with social fringe groups of all kinds and experienced by the lyrical self as reserved or at a distance (v 1-17). In the following hookline, however, the city that has just been described in all its ugliness is addressed as a familiar counterpart ("Good morning Berlin, you...", v. 18), which appears "dirty and gray" (v. 19), but at the same time - almost belittling - is defined as “beautifully terrible” (v.20).
The lyrical speaker's conclusion from this circumstance is to give in to the symptoms of fatigue (v.23) and to pass the night with all its dirt, metaphorically marked by the color black (v.25), with the beginning of the day, here with the symbolic color of Purity (blue) drawn (V.25), to be perceived.
The third verse then describes the sensory impressions of the lyrical ego in relation to the anonymity, alienation and isolation of the individual in the big city. Only a bakery (stanza 4), which contrastingly marks the boundary between inside and outside, offers the opportunity to escape cold reality in order to indulge in dreams (v.36).
In this protected atmosphere, the big city “doesn’t seem as hard as you think” (v. 41). The C part of the hook can be interpreted as the lyrical speaker's personal summary. The alienating sensory impressions of the big city in the morning are subjected to a final reflection, with the vital necessity of the urban space forming the final conclusion (v. 55f). At this point the contradictory perspectives culminate and, despite all the dislike, make the song a “declaration of love” to the hometown.
On the phonetic level, in addition to the metrolect, the frequently occurring alliterations (e.g. "Stapf durch die Kotze am Kotti"“ (Vomit on the Kotti) (v. 6) and other equivalence structures (e.g. “seh sich satt fressen'... "eat your fill”) should be particularly highlighted, which correspond to the harshness of the text content. Antithetical Comparisons (e.g. “You can be so beautifull terrible” V.20) and almost loving personifications (e.g. “Good morning Berlin, you…” V.18) in turn break this characteristic and thus fit into the overall picture of an antagonistic perception of the big city a.
Sorry for some mistakes I made in english e.g. grammar - I'm teaching german literature. But I think you got my point. Greez

Great reaction. To give you some context:
The album ‘Stadtaffe‘, on which this song is featured, is one of the most successful German-language albums of all time.
Peter Fox had originally planned to produce it for another artist during the break that Seeed took from the end of 2007. However, his favourite partner CeeLo Green, who had already worked on the Seeed single Aufstehn! in 2005, was no longer available due to the unexpected success of Gnarls Barkley. Other singers did not satisfy Fox, so he recorded his own album ‘out of necessity’.
To produce the album, he worked with the 40-piece Babelsberg Film Orchestra. Throughout the album you can hear the genuine use of classical instruments.
After the huge success, he continued to release music with Seeed. His solo career seemed to be over after a single album. Until a second album was suddenly released last year. ‘Love Songs’ also landed at No. 1 in the charts again. The best-known new song is ‘Zukunft pink’.

Best decision to focus on sound and video and reading lyrics afterwards. When lyrics are propper translated (not automated) it can make sense to read them in the first run of a new piece of music.
    But not in this case.
Overall I think that's something i like on this chanel here, Dwayne, is that you focus on the appearance of music/video in the first step. You can listen to a song in a different way, without knowing/understanding the lyrics. I can't because german is my language. Therefore I can hear - through you - elements I diodn't recognize before.

And please Dwayne! Check out „Smudo schweift aus“! It’s from hip hop pioneers Die Fantastischen Vier, from 1993! It’s a deep cut of their early work and was featured on their quintessential album „Die vierte Dimension“ from 1993! To many people, me included, it’s simply one of the finest German hip hop tracks ever! th-cam.com/video/CI2d8iLkb-E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lqqhOP-2-q_Wzb6N

Another very important track in german hiphop history is weck mich auf by samy deluxe. He rapped together with the beginners under his old alias dynamite deluxe. I've been wanting to recommend the song to you for a while, but now that you've read through the lyrics too, you definitely have to listen to it. I don't want to spoil too much now, you'll see why.

I'm not into hip-hop or rap or anything, but Stadtaffe from Peter Fox is one of my most favorite albums ever. Heard it sooo many times. Brings joy to see, that you like it as well, even though you don't even understand the lyrics without translation and some back-ground knowledge. But when you say, it feels like London, I guess this could be true for other mayor cities like New York as well.

    Hi there Dwayne
The way Peter Fox describes this part of Berlin is accurate. I lived there almost 30 years ago and it hasn't changed much I guess.
"Kotti" is a nickname for one of the biggest intersections in Kreuzberg, full name is "Kottbusser Tor". In the late 60's and throughout the70's this part of the town used to be the melting pot of hippies and other free spirits. With the migration of thousands of Turkish people coming to West-Berlin this part of Kreuzberg became a "ghetto", and the reason for this is twofold: #1 - Germans didn't want "foreigners" close to their homes (still wanting to benefit of their workforce, though). #2 - Most of the houses were in bad shape, so the apartments were cheap. They could afford a living and still would be able to send home money to support the family. Over time they had built a Turkish society with plenty of shops, cafes and places to meet. This part of Kreuzberg was called "Little Ankara".
But there was a negative side affect to it as well. In the mid-70's a lot of Arabic people moved there as well, and with them came more drugs than before. There were times when there was at least one dead body found on a daily basis. It took the authorities almost two decades to successfully fight organized crime. Not, that there isn't any longer, but not as much as it used to be.
After the Berlin Wall came down, lots of students flooded this area and stayed there after graduating. So nowadays this area transformed into a part of Kreuzberg that is chic, hip and not cheap any longer. But the "Kotti" remained the same. You can still find drug addicts, drunks and weird people there, just like Peter Fox describes it.
BTW, you should check out one of his biggest hits: "Haus am See" - to have a real Carribean feeling.
    Regards from Germany
    Rick

There was a little mistranslation at the end of the lyrics. It originally sais "die Sonne geht gerade auf" and while it's true that "gerade" can mean "straight" as in a "straight line", in this context it means "just" as in timing: "the sun is just coming up".

That's in Berlin. Capital of Germany. At the beginning he is talking about Kottbuser Tor. A scene or part of Berlin known for its high amount of drug dealers and junkies but also the part where all different kinds of people meet because its where you come through when you drive through the city with public transportation. Berlin as a whole is a complete different city at daytime than it is at nighttime. Thats true.

This Song had been very popular and it expresses Fox' deep relationship to his city.
Friends of mine from Berlin told me that it was even sung by their children when they were on a kindergarden excursion walking through Berlin (guess that considering the lyrics 😮; different time of the day though 😉)
