Too funny!!! It’s weird how picky squirrels are with their food and getting what they want!! We have a pet squirrel and he’s a picky boy and gets his way all the time.

Animals are like us. We will eat anything if we need to stay alive, but we are picky when we have choices.
We only feed sunflower seed in the shell and boy do the squirrels eat them .😊one full feeder in three days

Looks like my house. I go through 75 pounds of peanuts a month feeding about 10 squirrels, blue birds, blue jays, crows, racoons and opossums.

I put Indian corn on my door in the fall. When it's time to take it down and put up Christmas decorations, I put the corn in the yard, right on the cobs, and it's usually picked completely clean by squirrels within a day or two.

This is such a cute video. I offer sunflower hearts and dry roasted peanut pieces for my birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. My squirrels don’t even bother the peanuts and go straight to the sunflower seeds. Animals are so amazing and interesting and we learn so much by watching them. A squirrel at my old Navy barracks used to beg people to get sunflower seeds from the vending machine. It would stand on your shoe to get attention.

They are so cute, i have a few huge squirrels and then the babies, when they are black they are loud and fight for the nuts like the adults and make this loud chirping sound that can wake a sleeping adult

I loved Splitty’s little foot stomp tantrum when first confronted with the new buffet selection & Lilly looking like she’s about to march in & get her own ‘big foods’ from the cupboard 😂
Before there was a mini crackdown on greys in the UK, I used to often see squirrel food tubs with seeds & corn kernels mixed in on sale, but whenever I tried to put it out for them, they’d always take the nuts, the birds would scoff the seeds & the corn would just get left behind.
I’ve read that squirrels are supposed to like both, but whilst I’ve occasionally witnessed my squirrels investigating the sunflower seeds the birds get, whenever I offer them to them direct, they always act the same as yours. I guess they must know that the corn isn’t as nutritious for them & they’re only interested in eating the best!

@@Squirrels_at_the_window I know what you mean, sometimes it’s tough to separate the truth from the falsehoods. Your channel is an excellent source of guidance for squirrel enthusiasts though! But as you say, squirrels are the best teachers for what squirrels want & need & it’s obvious you’re just as keen to learn from yours as they are to show you!

These are the healthiest squirrels I have ever seen! Our squirrels are skinny and loosing the hair off their tails. I do feed then nuts and wild bird seed.

I once asked a search engine what squirrels favorite food was and got corn. I had been feeding nuts and they loved them but I thought I'd try corn. They very clearly told me they did not care for it. Some would politely eat one or two if hand fed, but only to stay in my good graces so they would get nuts later. I took the corn I had bought them and gave it to Canadian geese who liked it.
I also noticed there are quite a few things on the internet that are not true about squirrels regarding what they eat and how they behave.

That's crazy. My local squirrels love sunflower seeds. They devour them at an incredible rate.
The squirrels in my yard love our cherry trees. The apples they like to take a bite of and then walk away. They ignore the peaches, apricots, tomatoes and pomegranites. I have seen them licking the hot chili peppers, but they dont do more than that.
The ones around my yard love sunflower seeds. Depending on the squirrel, they'll sometimes eat the bottom of a kernel of corn as well. It really does differ from squirrel to squirrel, though. They all seem to love walnuts though. 🥰

Indeed, confirmation that, for squirrels: nuts > seeds > grains (if grains are a thing to them, not so sure, as very starchy, and low fat...)
I really wonder if what I read about mushrooms is true or not (apparently, they enjoy them, but that may only be during periods of scarcity...)
If you replaced "grains" with "fruit," that would describe the ones near me. They'll eat it, but only after determining that there aren't seeds or nuts.😊

These squirrels look super-healthy. It's from this good food. Much more healthy than the squirrels over here I see.
The squirrels around us (So. TX) eat sunflower seeds and corn. I used to put out one of those corn cakes and the squirrels would be all over that (the doves, too). Then I made a corn feeder where I could offer them a corn cob and they went after that, too (the doves, too). If there wasn't anything else around, the squirrels would go after the bird feeders and eat the sunflower seeds that were mixed in the bird seed. I also made a flip-top feeder for the squirrels that I put peanuts in. It's very cute to see them push the lid up with their nose and reach in for a peanut. It only took 2-3 days of enticing for them to figure it out.
When I say "squirrels", it's usually just one at a time. In fact, I'm not sure if there is more than one as I can't tell them apart. Our neighborhood is relatively new (10-12 yrs). The trees are bigger now and with it, the squirrels have started to show up the last couple of years. Hopefully we'll see more in the coming years.
We've lived in other, more established neighborhoods and the squirrels are more abundant there. Most older neighborhoods have pecan trees as well, which the squirrels love.
I guess Lily can be a tough customer when other diners come to your cafe!! She wants service first!!😂🐿️🥜🌽

I’m raising a baby squirrel now that feel out of a nest and my cat brought her to my back door. Shes approx 4-5 weeks old now. Not sure where it fell from, but I tried to help with reuniting with mom, but no mom ever came. I really enjoy watching u care so much for the squirrels. ❤from North Carolina.

Cute Cute Cute!!! I got that squirrel food a month ago. There's still a lot left. Very good purchase. The animals all love it. I like to put some bonus pecans in there when i go shop. Skerly, Chippy and a bunch of birds. When did you start doing this great deed, and how are your neighbors about it? Some people have a problem with squirrels. I don't. I love them and I love Chipmonks too.
I started feeding the squirrels almost 5 years ago. The neighbors don't have any problem with it because the squirrels don't bother anyone.

When I lived in town a long time ago, we had several pecan trees at our place and I guess the squirrels got tired of pecans all the time. I used to put dried corn on the cob out for them and they would go berserk over it. The squirrels would strip the cobs bare in a few minutes. They also loved what was in the bird feeders...

I was lucky to have some squirrel buddies, at an old house i once lived at. Those squirrels would only eat nuts really, but would occasionally enjoy banana, apple, or flapjack lol.

@squirrelsatthewindow Really? That's surprising. I took care of squirrels for a while and they all loved avocado a lot. Green grapes were another big hit, with the skin peeled off 1st so no little pieces of grape skin gets caught in their throats..

My squirrels won’t touch the corn BUT they absolutely love sunflower seeds. I buy a 20 pound bag at Walmart at a discount. I live in South Carolina so your squirrels taste may vary……..

In the west coast of Canada. The squirrels, birds, and rats eat the sun flower seeds but they make such a mess with the shells. So I switch to feeding unshell peanuts. I'll try corn. 🤔
They do like corn. Somehow. The use there front teeth to get the pulp frm inside the corn and leave the shell. Love my friend's

I used to feed two magpies. First I gave them leftover bread, then some nuts (which they ate up a lot faster). They were very shy, I had to put it quite far from my window. I then tried raisins. Result? They refused to eat bread if I left it out, but the raisins were gone within minutes, I could even leave them just outside my window :D (Had to be closed for them to come though)
well at least we know they are not starving as they can be so fussy.
When I try to feed them by hand, I get scratched! If I toss nuts onto the patio, there is usually a fight, so I have taken to putting sunflower seeds in separate little piles - one for each of them & they get along fine. I used to give them peanuts in the shell, but they ended up climbing over the fence into neighboring yards and leaving the shells behind for the owners to clean up. They all have their own personalities. Enjoyed your video. Thank you.

The squirrel near me prefer black oil sunflower seeds and in shell peanuts by far over the larger sunflower seed mixes, and ofcourse the walnuts and almonds, pecans,and cashews(my fav nut also)
Some of our squirrels really like sunflower seeds, but yeah, corn is shunned by them all.
My Squirrels love sunflower seeds. They go through a 20lb bag every month, but they will just leave corn alone.

Sunflower seeds are a hit with the squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, birds, raccoons and skunks😊, in my yard. I was surprised your squirrels didn’t immediately go for the sunflower seeds. Maybe the corn was covering the seeds too much.

Im sorry that the experiment didn't work out with the squirrels. ill tell you what--birds love the sunflower/corn mix. You would've gotten a lot of feathered friends to visit if that mix had been in a bird feeder! 🙂
