50ft steel sailboat. In smaller boats the waves actually are a little less intense. The boat rises and fall with them, in large freighters etc they get slapped by the waves. Its all still very stressful, we didnt sleep much and went crazy by the end of it.

This is amazing and terrifying footage. I think of the people who perished on the El Faro in the Caribbean during Hurricane Joaquin in 2015, and what they faced that awful morning. The captain did not heed weather predictions and steered the cargo ship directly into the eye of the storm. May they all rest in peace.

Waves are basically a rolling cylinder. You see maybe 1/3rd of the wave above water. Why they break and crash against shores is water becoming to shallow. Otherwise you need wind to take the tops off waves in order to get them to break
