I agree; I was going to order the Proton, but I wanted to see the Gem reviewed. I pre-ordered the Gem yesterday. I was wondering, what do you recommend pin-up or pin-down for someone like me that usually throws straight and usually fast down lane?
I didn't know about this one and ended up picking up the Track Paragon for the Open Championships. Definitely not disappointed. Going to buy the Gem for my wife to complete her Roto Grip arsenal.

Crazy how far left you were able to get with the ball in the bonus clips at the end. Most solids would be leaving corner pins from that deep. Pretty impressive ball!
I always go with a pin down layout on stronger equipment 40x4 1/4 x70 I like to have control when throwing strong stuff with my revs being 450+. I like the idea of comparing it to the Helios! If you were to add one more to that, I would say UC3. I know with the cover being different it sounds weird, but trust me.
Brunswick Prism has been my only real asym solid ball that I've had, and have actually liked it quite a bit. But I'm an SPI guy so I'd love to replace it at some point with a Reality, or now maybe the Gem. It's certainly gonna be the first ball I go to at the Storm demo this weekend at my local alley.
I know you are on staff with Turbo. The pin up Gem looks like it has the Turbo outer thumb sleeve. However, the pin down Gem looks like it has the Vice IT outer sleeve ring.
Fantastic ball. I was watching your feet in this video. I've seen you make several adjustments. Nice to see and learned something to stand to the left and play deep. My preference is to make PIN down or 4000 polish. If this ball proves to be too violent. Love from Holland. Great video and thanks. I buy this ball the GEM.

The pin up looks like it is layered when rolling and the pin down one has pink circle staying in same spot hile off your hand till it just passes the arrows . But that is what I see.
My favorite asymmetric is the Hammer Black Widow 2.0 because it's so so versatile and as they say "Nothing hits like a Hammer!" Plus it's black. Not a fan of the swirled cover stocks. I guess I'm just too old to embrace the swirl!
The gem look real nice, might have to pick one up. Was debating between trend 2 or this one. But the way it roll on the lane it look good. I’m a right hand bowler, but the way I bowl, I backhand. And I been trying to watch a lot of tips, but it harder when not every bowler backhand. It either left or right hand. The ball I use right now is the beast and track heat.

I didn't have any coaching, I'm 43 so TH-cam wasn't a thing back then. What's a good ball for me to get back into bowling with. I'd like to end up with a good set of 3-4 balls eventually. My wife has never bowled before, I'm buying her a tropical storm. I'm 5'9", don't throw with a ton of speed, not a ton of rotation.. what's a really good all around ball for me to start with.

Would you put 2000 grit on the Gem? Wondering why mine hooks on certain lanes but not on others.. meaning it’s not hooking strong like it should because that’s how I have it drilled is strong.
Considering getting this ball for my GF. The lanes we go to by her are pretty heavy for house shot. I have to put my zen away and use my high flair UC3. Her tropical surge just doesn’t move and she gets frustrated. I think this may be the play for her so she can get back to the pocket. Thoughts?

Just looking at the undrilled figures for RG and Diff's, when you said you were going to compare a pin up drilling to a pin down drilling, I guessed you'd like the pin down more because the Gem is such a strong ball -- I made the assumption you filmed on a house shot, was I correct? I know it's too strong for me to even consider buying it (but I'm bowling mostly on house shots.) Hopefully you will get good use out of the pin up on sport shots and serious tournament conditions!
Wow love the look of the gem. I actually got the motiv pride bowling ball and got it drilled pin down. And it kinda has the same reaction on the lane as the pin down gem does. I do have a couple practice videos on my page. If u have any tips on what you can see from my practice. Do let me know what I can maybe do better. Cause if I end up buying the gem ball. Would I need to drill it pin up ? So it wont be close to the same as my pride ball with pin down? Or just drill it the same? But I do love the video of showing the difference of pin up and pin down for the same ball.

Just got my gem drilled today and this ball hits the pins so f* hard. Almost like it makes the pins scream when they get hit. Haha. Thanks for the review of different drillings that is something I don’t understand so I just had my new balls drilled the same from the storm 2LS chart #3 for the Gem, Reality, Zen, and hy-road pearl. Do you think that is a good thing to have them drilled the same and let the different cores and coverstocks be the difference in reaction?
I think so yea its one less thing to have to think about. Besides the layout only does so much. Gotta remember that the core doesnt touch the lane the cover does, so cover and surface will be everything. I layout everything pretty much the same and adjust with surface
Teammate picking Gem up this week, med speed and rev, 190ish league avg. Playing on a slightly heavyish THS and current "heaviest" ball is Phaze 2 or Alert. Should he think about pin down? He likes rolling it mostly over 10 arrow so alil straighter, pin up might be alil too strong for his game thinkin. Thanx!
I am curious to know what your angles for each ball happened to be? My current layout is 60X5X40 on a lot of my Asym balls. Will be getting the GEM shortly and based on this video, I may look into pin down. I had 2 Enigma's one pin up and the other pin and there were times where I could one on the left lane and the other on the right lane, to shoot well.
Definitely on the fence. Was considering picking up the Gem because of the early dig and pick up on oily fresh lanes. But after seeing some reviews, I'm noticing some have been experiencing lack of back end pop...which I kinda need. Lol. Do you experience any of that? If so, suggest any alternative balls?
The gem is designed to be very early and smooth in the backend! If you’re looking for more pop down lane look into the Roto Grip RST x2 or the storm Hyroad Pearl
From what I hear is it’s so strong that it burns up a lot of energy in the front and you don’t get much skid. You really need to get into as much oil as possible with this ball.
What do you think about polishing this ball to help it get through the front with more energy? I’ve been told I should polish it because it really burns up in the front.
If you need it to clear the fronts more just ball change. This ball is really good when you need a STRRONG ball up front. no need to tale away fromthagt
Luis, I am a senior with a bad back so I am limited to 12 pound balls. This being said the Storm balls all have a different core for 13 & 12 balls. Is the GEM still good on a 12 pounder? Thank you
I've been a proponent of pin down and short pin layouts on house shots. Most people scoff at that idea and insist that everything should be drilled with the pin above the ring finger. SMDH 🙄
So my layout that I put on my bowling balls is 4 3/4 Right and 7/8 Up. What would your suggestion be either pin up or pin down for me? I know you probably won’t know but I just want to know which layout is better for me. I think I might put the pin down.

Great video but I’m a little confused. You said that lower pin lowers the rg but on your Zen video comparing pin up vs pin down you said the opposite, pin down raised the rg. Which statement is correct? Does pin down raise or lower the rg? Obviously it can’t do both.
Is that pin down Gem still going to be good on really heavy oil since it reads later? Does it still give you a strong early mid lane hook? I want to try pin down Gem since it looks like it shapes more but does it only shape more on the house shot off the dry boards?
Might want to clean your heel or have a higher slide pad on. Seemed like you fouled a lot. (it was more noticeable when you moved right and picked your speed up.)
Personally look questionable for shots around 12:10. Foul lights could have been turned off. Either way cool video for the pin up vs pin down. Might get one and make it pin down pretty soon.
I have a phase 2 but I’m looking to add 2 balls to my bag for my first few tournaments with my dad. Reality and zen? Or the nova. Any suggestions could really use the help
I apparently don't know what a strong ball or lots of hook looks like 🤷♂️. I've yet to see this "hook monster" actually look like a hook monster. Maybe everyone is throwing it on something super long and oily so it looks weak.
So “HOOK” doesn’t mean left to right motion. Hook refers to how quickly the ball wants to get going. This ball is the strongest ball I’ve ever thrown because it gets going so quickly and what makes it special is that it doesn’t puke in the back like most other balls in that category
@@LuisNapoles The avg person watching this won't really grasp that, may be a good thing to bring up in video. Most folks will view hook as left to right. Love the videos though, keep up the good job
gem? the core looks like a loose sock, and the cover colours look like a paint shelf collapsed...so gem? it's clearly the core they're naming it after given the logo...but gem? it's not even a pearl edit: i finally got the storm website to load...the colours are all precious stone names. citrine ruby and amethyst. which is pretty forced

The C300 Authority is a shiny pearl ball that changes direction more than the Gem. Doesn’t hook more than the Gem. There’s a big difference. I’m just trying to help you understand is all

So pin down will make the ball longer and smoother so prob not a bad idea for a high rev player

Is that pin down Gem still going to be good on really heavy oil since it reads later? Does it still give you a strong early mid lane hook? I want to try pin down Gem since it looks like it shapes more but does it only shape more on the house shot off the dry boards?

I apparently don't know what a strong ball or lots of hook looks like 🤷♂️. I've yet to see this "hook monster" actually look like a hook monster. Maybe everyone is throwing it on something super long and oily so it looks weak.
So “HOOK” doesn’t mean left to right motion. Hook refers to how quickly the ball wants to get going. This ball is the strongest ball I’ve ever thrown because it gets going so quickly and what makes it special is that it doesn’t puke in the back like most other balls in that category

gem? the core looks like a loose sock, and the cover colours look like a paint shelf collapsed...so gem? it's clearly the core they're naming it after given the logo...but gem? it's not even a pearl
edit: i finally got the storm website to load...the colours are all precious stone names. citrine ruby and amethyst. which is pretty forced

Ive had the gem a few weeks now. Not at all impressed. I have several balls that hook much more.
Are you referring to hook as front to back or side to side? Asking for reference

@@rickjohnson8527 okay because “hook” refers to front to back hook and I can’t imagine to many balls being stronger than a Gem. Left to right like you’re explaining there’s always gonna be stronger balls because of the nature of the cover on the Gem
@@LuisNapoles for me the columbia 300 authority by far out hooks this thing. Hook is hook. If I stand further left to hit the pocket, it hooks more.

The C300 Authority is a shiny pearl ball that changes direction more than the Gem. Doesn’t hook more than the Gem. There’s a big difference. I’m just trying to help you understand is all
