I cannot say in so many words how this film affected me....I was born in 1975 and remember watching this film when i 6yo....it drew me into an appreciation for Australia and the mysteries our country holds. The pan flute and the intensity really 'got' to me as a kid, but I continue to try explain the tattoo I have at the base of my neck......."What we see and what we seem, are but a dream......a dream within a dream.
Indeed. One of the most beautiful, mysterious movies ever made. It plays like a hot summer day. Peter Weir’s imagery meets Pan’s flute. Each shot is like a painting. Miranda is obsession worthy. This film intoxicates you, then haunts you, with a brilliant ending. It plays like a dream for very good reason. It is. “Everything we see, is but a dream within a dream.” Edgar Allen Poe
"This film intoxicates you" yes. thats why i keep coming back. And the music is as haunting as the film. I saw this movie when i might have been 11 or 12 yrs old. The music left a lasting impression. I went searcing for the theme may be 23 yrs later. Tnx to youtube. Found it and i keep revsiiting
@@nocturnal0091 true. I went into this movie knowing nothing. Borrowed it from a friend who said it was a Victorian horror film. One of the best experiences of my life. I always come back to this video whenever I feel like watching the movie again.
Hanging Rock, in country Victoria is in itself a haunting, ethereal place, having walked, claimed and scrambled around it. All the time I was somehow expecting to find Miranda. It’s that kind of place. And then in Jan 20, saw Elton John there. Amazing place.
I love Hanging Rock, I go there as much as possible. I grew up in Geelong and now live in Ballarat - and I first went in the mid 90's in my late teens, I was so obsessed with the film and book then, and have found many of the film sets at the Rock. I might sneak in one night during full moon - that would be haunting!
Hehe haunting yeah. Everything about this film is so beautiful, i can never forget Miranda and when that woman says i know now Miranda is a Boticcelli angel.
@iridia , I used to go rock climbing there back in the eighties the place used to give me goosebumps I always felt I was watched . I've never been back again .
I went to Hanging Rock as a small boy it was approximately 80 miles away from Geelong where I lived and it is a haunting and strange place . Fred Williams painted Hanging Rock and taught myself and my twin brother a bit about Pleinne Airre painting when we found him by incident on the road to Melbourne at The You Yangs National Park .
Trust me when I say this. Drive towards the mountain, where an amazing optical illusion makes it seem like your car is rolling by it's self up hill. Walk the path to the base of the mountain, with it's finger like rocks pointing like Dreamtime gods reaching to the sky. Climb the winding paths to the top, and walk between the towering rocks, with their strange hollows, hidden paths, and the weird feeling that every one of them is watching you. Stop somewhere at the top amongst the maze of stones and listen. You will not need music. The sound of the wind, the birds, insects, and the hint of tens of thousands of years of indigenous culture pulsing like some too deep to hear heart below you, will both energise you, and make you feel as small as an insect. There is an unfathomable reason why it is a special and sacred place to the indigenous peoples, and a mesmerising magnet to visitors. You won't need music, because the sounds you make right down to the sound of your breathing, become part of the music of the mountain. When you leave, a small part of you remains, and often, your thoughts will return to that place. I hope one day you can enjoy visiting the mountain. Remember my words when you do.
Questa musica era perfetta per le magiche immagini dell'indimenticabile film "picnic ad hanging rock"...."c'è un tempo e un luogo giusti perché ogni cosa abbia inizio e fine...". Miranda è veramente un angelo botticelliano..
i agree - i liked the mystery of being left thinking - having that last chapter would have concluded what gave the rock such mystery and such a following.
I grew up near that place - every summer a school trip to that rock - then the movie came and made it more bearable. Mrs Appleyard had nothing on our principal.. ours was a cross between hitler and a bush pig...LOL Oddly this music goes well with the landscape of the Macedon area
I remember seeing it for the first time with my mum, who insisted they were taken away by extraterrestrials!!! Her reason being the watches stopping, red cloud, scratches on hands, falling asleep, time lapse etc
The answer to the mystery is in the opening scene, where Miranda says that "we are in a dream within a dream" citing a famous poem. Therefore when they vanish, they are simply exiting the matrix and illusion of this world, which is a dream according to many spiritual traditions. I can't believe none of you noticed that except me. If you are a spiritual truth seeker, you are more likely to see these kind of things.
beautiful, I've been looking for this for a long time, Ifc used to play the film all the time back in the late 90's and early 2000's. I had always wanted the main theme to this movie.
You are likely thinking of the title sequence. Problem is, the versions used in the movie are not the same as the more familiar version heard elsewhere. In fact, I'm pretty sure the "Ascent" track is different in some versions of the movie, as I remember that haunting pan pipe version when I first saw the movie decades ago. But now it appears with a completely different piano track, that does appear more ominous and suitable for the scene.
The movie ( i believe is fictional).BUT...a group of school girls did go missing there in 1860,they were found dead.Died of thirst there is a dvd that was released with the original movie when it came out in dvd.The faces in the rock are fantastic.
Majestic and Evil. The inevitable duality of music, and the inexplicable duality of a place which has only become infamous as a result of literature. I'd be creeped out at Hanging Rock. Not because of any particular mythology or rumor about its heritage - But because of the film (And book). Yikes! :P
In Romanian, like in English, a G followed by E or I softens the G. For example, gin or generate. In English, a U is used to keep the G hard, as in rogue or guitar. In French, Italian or Romanian, they keep the G hard with an H. Pronounce the eo in Gheorghe yo. With an English spelling you get GYOR-gay zam-FEER. Stress the syllable in capitals.
"...like in English, a G followed by E or I softens the G." Hmm. Like in "get" and "git?" English rules have so many exceptions I don't really think we even ought to bother calling them rules. It's just "sometimes we do this, sometimes we don't."
For those interested in the rest of the beautiful music from the film, I have uploaded all 22 minutes of it here: th-cam.com/video/Xc_LpgiTSzI/w-d-xo.html
WTF. Nothing ever indicated that. They were clearly into girls which is where the fascination came from when they saw them skipping through the bush. There was no sexual tention between the boys ever.
This is Zamfir's variant interpretation of the same piece, "Doina: Sus Pe Culmea Dealului," from one of his other albums titled, "Fantasy" (1985) from Polygram, recorded at Paris Studio Des Dames .
A film where the music was a vitally key component...capturing lightning in a bottle
An incredible combination of beauty, mystery and (deathly) threat.
Peter Weir is a genius.
We studied this in Junior School with a student teacher in UK...loved to have remembered his name,he was an inspiration.

Incredibly haunting..love it.
Haunting!! Love the film and and always blown away by the sheer beauty of this amazing pan flute !!
Thanks for the upload! One of my alltime favorite films. It's owes much of it's atmosphere to that music and Zamfir's sound.
This is like Badlands, walkabout or Blade runner, a piece of art not just a movie !
Hell yeah!!
I meet Zamfir on tour, here in NZ, circa 79/80. He signed my pipes, had them made cost $280 Swiss francs. He was a genius and an awesome human❤

When god says enough BANGGGGGGGGGGG this is the melody we humans will cry elites you won't find a resting place ever
I want to go to Hanging Rock in Victoria - and walk over the rocks listening to this. I bet I'll piss myself with pure fear.

Hauntingly beautiful! The music awakens one's contact with life itself.

Ich könnte sterben, bei diesem tollen Somg.Kann nicht genug davon bekommen.Ein super Künstler.Mit James last,unübertroffen,
I have been a fan of Zamfir's for years. Love his music used in Once Upon a Time in America. Has that same haunting quality.
i could listen to this all day...
Very haunting music........goes well with the movie.
Cracking music the film is a gem.
C. 'E un Tempo per ogni cosa.... Incredibile ma vero
How haunting can you get. I'm am in a dream in itself.
i agree - i liked the mystery of being left thinking - having that last chapter would have concluded what gave the rock such mystery and such a following.
adore this.
What a masterpiece.
IS it hunting me for years....what a dreamy movie this is not for everyone......
souls are flying now to this.......
Has a haunting, deja vu feeling about it

This tune encompasses the atmosphere of the Macedon area.

Absolute beauty
@trentmuch1 as evocative and compelling as the film itself...Magnificent.
Gheorge Zamfir is apure genius indeed! A real master piece!
This man is a superman. He makes we, Romanians, to feel special and proud. Amazing!!

“Doina Lui Petru Unc” is what you’re after
best rendition i've heard bar the original
Picnic at Hanging Rock ! what a blonde
Miranda is not a blonde....she's a Botticelli angel....
This is a beautiful version but it's not the one used in the film. The one in the film is more evocative and haunting...
There are actually several versions.

Trasportati nel fascino irresistibile di una storia misteriosa, inquietante, forse magica...

@trentmuch1 I bet you wouldn't, it's a nice place to walk around just outside of Melbourne.
Quand j ecoute cette musique j ai envie de me lance dans le vide to enjoy the end
oryginalny tytuł " Doina sus pe culmea dealului"
Brilliant! Is this music available to download?
Should listen to Negura Bunget's song Pamint. Similar
As perfect as the zither soundtrack in The Third Man

Relax. U won't piss yourself . I've been there. The nature is gorgeous. You'll have a picnic and get back fine darl ;)
The tune is the same but this version is definitely not from the movie.
See Flambards an 80s tv prog

NO NO! This version is not right - my ear tells me so! The pipes player is trying too hard - it's not pleasurable to listen to. Why was it recorded?
