  • Carrying on a long tradition of Toyota selling cars made by someone else, the Toyota/Subaru partnership has produced the second generation of the 86 sports car. With stunning good looks, a larger engine offering more power, and sticking to the formula of a naturally aspirated, RWD layout, Ciro De Siena set out to answer the question, does this car offer the best of both worlds?

    The Toyota GR 86 is what the GT 86 should have been in the first place. Unfortunately it's priced out of the reach of the average petrolhead. The price of car's in South Africa is spiralling out of control. Another great review by the Car's Co Za team.

      It's really a shame they're marked up so much overseas. In the states they start at 28k USD which is very good for what you get compared to econocars. The ecoboost Mustang is also a great value around the same price but it's pretty bare bones and once you go premium and add a few options the price skyrockets. Same with the WRX and the MX5.

      @@Rob165x Yes unfortunately even the mustang in South Africa is as luxury vehicle. We do not get the ecoboost mustang anymore, but the base mustang GT (and auto only sigh) starts at ±$60250 US. Basically it competes with luxury german brands this side...

    Had the old 86, loved it. It’s was an incredibly fun, drivers car & after a little supercharging was… well… a bit faster, but still not fast (I wanted reliability).
    But as a package it was brilliant & after 7+ years I never had anything go wrong, ever.
    But the new price? W. T. F!

    • @Rob165x
      @Rob165x ปีที่แล้ว +1

      28k USD for base, nearly 31k for the premium is a good price in the states, unfortunately they're sparcely produced so it's not as viable in other places. =( i.e. Europe only got a few thousand and they were sold out for 2 years. My 22 BRZ was marked up 4k which was really annoying, still worth it to get it early (had it 16 months now), took 6 months before I saw another one on the road.

      @Adriaan Serrao, 1 of the main reasons for Toyota outselling Suzuki is dealer network. People, especially older people look for convenience when it comes to having to take their cars for service etc. Why travel 20km when a different brand selling a similar product albeit a bit more expensive that's just 5km away. It might not seem much but for some it's about convenience. Once Suzuki starts having more branches that sales gap will decrease.

    I wouldn't go so far as to say that "Toyota don't build their own cars anymore", but in certain instances they have partnered with others where it makes good commercial sense to do so. They did help Subaru with the multi-spark ignition & optimization of the GT86 engine, & have had a big hand in the design of the chassis of the GT86, GR86 & Supra - as a result, the Mk5 Supra is way more of a track car than the Z4, whereas the Z4 is more of a grand tourer.. I don't know much about the Suzuki-based models so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt there. But a quick Google search tells me that Toyota manufactures Corollas, Camrys, Hilux, Prius, Tacomas, etc. in many countries around the world..

      @ericmastrangelo4855 ปีที่แล้ว

      If straight line speed is your only definition of performance, then it isn't for you. For handling and such however, you won't find anything new as good until you hit at least twice the price point, and even then it holds its own quite well. I've had a '22 BRZ since May of last year, there's nothing that touches it in the corners until you're spending big cash, and even then I can upgrade my BRZ to improve things even more and still have spent less.
      As for Toyota, they own Daihatsu outright and have stakes in both Suzuki and Subaru, so it's not like they're straying far. Plus, at least in the US, we have the GR Corolla which is solely Toyota and being highly praised, as well as other countries have the GR Yaris that's equally praised, so it's not like they're incapable of putting out a serious enthusiast car. Reality is that with economics being what they are, you would not have cars like the GR/BRZ or Supra these days if it weren't for joint efforts. They're too niche.
